It is unfortunate that the image many have of New Jersey is represented by the oil refineries surrounding Newark (Liberty) Airport and the New Jersey Turnpike.

In truth, the State’s nickname, “The Garden State” more accurately reflects its true nature.

While the state is one of the most densely populated in the country, large areas are devoted to vegetable and fruit farming and horse breeding.

The northwestern part of the state is mountainous and sparsely populated and the eastern part of the state enjoys some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

Here are some things I bet you didn’t know about New Jersey:

• New Jersey has the most diners in the world

• There are more racehorses in New Jersey than in Kentucky

• New Jersey is the home to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

• New Jersey is the world leader in blueberry and cranberry production

• 80% of what the US imports comes through the Elizabeth Seaport

• The lightbulb, phonograph and motion picture were inveted by Thomas Edison in New Jersey

• The first Indian Reservation was in the Watchung Mountains, NJ

• The first baseball game was played in Hoboken, NJ

• The first college football game was played in New Brunswick, NJ

14 | The Ultimate Guide to the Jersey Shore 2024

Ocean Grove, New Jersey

The Victorian era brought with it many changes in lifestyle that, at the time, were perceived to come about with lightning speed. The stresses and pressures of society in that era had grown at an alarming pace leading Rev. Ellwood Stokes, the first President of the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, to write that, “brain and nerve were taxed to the last extreme by these refinements, until the physical was often prostrated and the mind imperiled.”

In May, 1869 a group of Methodist ministers felt called to search along the New Jersey coast for a suitable camp meeting location - a place of respite where “religion and recreation should go hand in hand.” After an extended search, they came upon a virtually uninhabited grove of trees, free from mosquitoes which had tormented them at other sites previously visited and pleasantly surrounded by two lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. Despite its isolation, Ocean Grove’s founders later wrote that, “it seemed to us that a more magnificent site for cottages could hardly be found.”

Returning in but a few weeks, twenty persons gathered in tents to begin clearing the land and held their first prayer meeting on July 31st. Rev. Stokes felt led to remind those gathered of the first words of Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning God...,” adding, “God is here,” in Ocean Grove’s beginning and he trusted, would remain and be there to the end.

From that humble start, Ocean Grove grew and continued to provide a place of respite for those seeking to come away from the hectic pace of life. Permanent buildings were added for worship and cottages were established year ’round until an entire community was formed. The original members of the Association laid out what would become one of the first planned communities of the Victorian age.

In 1870 the New Jersey State Legislature granted the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association a charter setting Ocean Grove aside as a place of perpetual worship to Jesus Christ. Promoting that original purpose remains vital as the Camp Meeting continues to provide a place for spiritual birth, growth and renewal in a Christian seaside setting.

Our lives today are even more hectic than Ocean Grove’s founders could have ever imagined, the tyranny of the urgent often drives us, and a place of peace and relaxation is just as necessary to rejuvenate body and soul. We invite you to discover today what Ocean Grove’s founders did 150 years ago. Indeed, “a more magnificent site,” can still hardly be found.

The Ultimate Guide to the Jersey Shore Things To Do

BEACHES

All of the beaches at the Jersey Shore are clean and well maintained by the individual town’s beach departments. Beach maintenance is supported by the sale of daily and seasonal beach badges. Cost is $4-$10 per day. Visitors can enjoy pristine beaches from Sandy Hook south to Island Beach State Park.

GOLF

Monmouth County offers 6 public golf courses, two of which Howell and Hominy Hill, are consistently rated among the top public courses in the country. Hominy Hill in Colts Neck, was called “Augusta of New Jersey.” By Zagat. Colts Neck Golf Club is semi-private and offers a wonderful and challenging trek.

RUNNING/WALKING/BIKING

The “boards” as the boardwalks are called are ideal and scenic for walking or running along the ocean. Bikes are only allowed on the boardwalks before 9am in season, anytime out of season. The Manasquan Reservoir, located about 20 minutes away is a natural preserve and has a beautiful 5 mile trail through the woods and along the reservoir. Wonderful place to walk, run or bike. There is a lengthy bike path through the woods, starting on North Main Street in Manasquan and stretching out all the way to Trenton. Bikes can be rented a Shore Riders Bike Rentals in Point Pleasant.

KAYAKING

Kayaking in and around the Manasquan River is both great exercise and wonderful way to spend an hour or two. There’s a place in Manasquan that rents kayaks by the hour or day. Paddle Out in Manasquan at 537 Main Street opens at 10am, but if you call the night before they’ll meet you as early as 8am.

BOATING

Boatsetter.com and Getmyboat.com offer a variety of boats to rent throughout the Jersey Shore.

GAMBLING

Gambling and top notch shows are about an hour and fifteen to an hour and thirty minutes away in Atlantic City.

THEATER

We are fortunate to have five theater companies in the area. Spring Lake Theatre Company 3rd Ave, Spring Lake, Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan, the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, Alexelrod Performing Arts Center in Deal and NJ Repertory Company in Long Branch. All produce Broadway type shows and many live music concerts.

FISHING

Surf fishing is very popular in the area with striped bass and blue fish the usual catch. Young guy recently caught a 52lb striper in the surf. You’ll have to bring your own pole, but you can get everything else you need at Bogan’s Basin in Brielle, on Higgins Ave. Brielle is the deep sea fishing capital of the East offering both charter boats and party boats.

HORSERACING

Monmouth Park Rt. 36, Long Branch No better way to spend a cloudy day than the beautiful Monmouth Park. Clean, well managed facility with manicured grounds, top horses and jockeys. Season runs late May to late September.

CONCERTS

The PNC Bank Arts Center Located in Holmdel. This outdoor amphitheater is a beautiful venue and hosts some of the top acts touring each summer. Count Basie Theater is on Monmouth Ave. in Red Bank This small indoor theater offers interesting concert and theater productions throughout the year.

WHO WE ARE

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

Second Chance NJ is a 501 © (3) non-profit organization, created to train and place previously incarcerated people in the hospitality industry. High rates of recidivism (individuals returning to jail/prison after release) and the difficulty the food industry has in attracting and hiring long-term employees make this a project that can help solve two serious problems in our community.

OUR OBJECTIVES

*To reduce recidivism

*To provide a trained, talent pool for area restaurants

A SOLUTION

An exclusive 8-week culinary arts training program to provide a basic orientation to the culinary arts. This intensive course will prepare the student to assume entry level positions in the area’s restaurants.

PARTNERSHIPS

Second Chance NJ has entered into partnerships with the Monmouth County Culinary Arts Program, Monmouth and Ocean County Probation, The NJ Department of Corrections and the NJ Re-Entry Corp.

FUNDING

Second Chance NJ has received a grant from the NJ Department of Corrections to initiate its program and the first group of classes.
