MOBILE APP REDESIGN PROCESS BOOK DESIGNED BY CHRISTINA POPIK • SPRING 2018
1
Project Definition
This project is to choose a current mobile application to redesign in terms of visual and user experience quality. Before redesigning, I will conduct visual and user research including interviews and empathy maps with potential users and those who try out the app. Based on the research, I will create a persona of someone who the app is geared towards, as well as one self persona.
4
After all research is conducted, I will create an information architecture/flow chart, wireframes, and screen comps of the redesigned app. When finalized, it will be uploaded to InVision for a demo prototype.
Mobile application redesign selection:
Yoga_For_Health
In the dark depths of the Apple App Store (where the ugliest of the ugly apps live) I found a yogabased app with great potential, yet executed very poorly. I specifically search for a yoga application because outside of social media, this is one app I do consistently use so I’d be able to understand and evaluate the app effectively. Yoga has been proven to be excellent for your body and mind. Not only is good exercise and helps improve balance, flexibility and muscle definition, it helps relieve the stress of your day by just dedicating a little time every week. Ideally the purpose of a yoga application is to provide those same desirable effects but be more easily accessible with the convenience of not having to leave your home or purchase expensive classes at your local gym.

APP REVIEWS
The customer reviews added up to a whopping 4.1/5 rating but the app was far from perfect from my point of view: LIKES • Liked the idea of compiling a variety of yoga related information from poses, to benefits, to food choices • Explains poses that can help with particular health issues such as stress, cold/flu, hangovers, etc. DISLIKES • Unattractive design and color choices • When you go under “categories” you can’t read the entire name on some of the buttons you can click • Impossible to contact developer for app support their website link was broken • Poor information architecture...the articles in certain categories don’t belong • Names of yoga and breathing techniques not in names that are easily recognizable to people (Anulon vilo, pranayam) • Not updated for iPhone 7 or newer (app itself has not been updated since 2015) • Only offers you one pose to try with each health problem
6
• Repetitive yoga categories (Ex. One named “Yoga Health Benefits” and another named “Top 10 Benefits of Yoga”) • When you click on a category, it doesn’t show the name at the top of the next page, it just says “yoga name” so you don’t know what category you are looking at • Inconsistent visuals (different people, some black and white while others in color) • Visuals are “squished” or blurry • Type is justified for detailed descriptions of poses making it difficult to read • Explanations for doing yoga for certain health issues don’t always explain the pose in the picture • If you click the button to rate the app, visit more apps, or learn about the company, it opens up Apple Music with “Farzana Vohra” typed in the browse tab • Description of app promises videos on tips and yoga pose instructions, but there are none on the app • Overall, it is ugly, hard to use, and some features don’t work/do what they say they will

Visual Research
I researched and explored a variety of possible inspiration for the app redesign, both fitness and nonfitness related. My interviews concluded that users want the app to have a calming feel to it since it is a yoga application. Therefore in my visual research, I looked for applications that had simplistic designs and light or pastel colors to help create the relaxing experience that the users want.

User Research
After I had an initial look at Yoga_For_Health, I wanted to explore a bit deeper into the issues I experienced while using the app and see if others would have a similar experience. To get a complete understanding on how potential users feel about the application, I conducted interviews with yogis and had each person try out the app for themselves, followed by questions about their experience.
18
I began my user research by conducting interviews with a small group of people in regards to yoga practice. I asked the following questions to help invigorate a discussion on potential changes to their yoga experience: • How often do you practice yoga? • Why do you practice yoga? • What is the hardest part about doing yoga? • Are you doing anything to make this issue easier? • How has yoga impacted your life? • Any health issues that your yoga practice helps with? • Would you define your yoga expertise as beginner, intermediate or advanced? • How do you go about doing yoga? Do you go to classes, use an app, other? Mention all that apply and which one you use most. • Likes about your current method? • Dislikes about your current method? • Are there any issues with your current yoga experience that you would like to improve upon? • Would you be open to using a new method? If so, what? • Do you use an app for yoga practice? • What are some features you would want to see on a yoga app? After interviews, I asked a few of the participants to try out the app. Following the simulation, I asked a few questions including: • What’s most appealing about this product? • What’s the hardest part about using this product? • Was there anything surprising or unexpected about this product? • What could be done to improve this product? • Was there anything missing from this product that you expected? • Would you keep using this product after what you saw today? Each empathy map breaks down everything about their experience such as thinking, observations, needs and feelings in addition to issues and potential solutions.

Amanda Perelli
20 years-old • Student • Beginner Yogi Amanda loves practicing yoga because she feels as though it is relaxing and also a great form of exercise. She feels as if sometimes the poses are difficult and it takes a little bit to see longterm effects, which can be discouraging to some. Yoga has impacted Amanda’s life by helping her destress and become a calmer person all around. She struggles with anxiety, but yoga has fortunately helped those symptoms. Her favorite method of doing yoga is going to the free classes offered by her university. She also does yoga through guided classes on YouTube. Either way, she likes that whatever method she chooses from, those two are free. However, sometimes there is little personalization and not someone there to tell her poses are not done in the best way. She would be open to using a new method that is less expensive than paying for classes at a studio. If Amanda used a yoga app, she would like it to have helpful instructions from live teachers where you could send in a picture of a pose and they could tell you if you were doing it right or not.

Interview 1:
Name: Amanda Perelli Sex: Female Age: 20 Occupation: Student, Journalism
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS How often do you practice yoga? A few times a month because I don’t make time to do it. Why do you practice yoga? Because it’s so relaxing and not only is it a great form of exercise but it helps your mind as well. What is the hardest part about doing yoga? It’s much harder than it looks and a lot of the poses take weeks of practice to really master. It’s hard because you want to see results right away or be able to do what the people in your class can do but really it just depends on where you are in your practice. Are you doing anything to make this issue easier? Not in particular, but I do think it’s best to know your limit and to come to terms with what feels best for you and to know what you can and cannot not right away. With time you will be able to accomplish the harder poses.
Likes about your current method? It’s free. Dislikes about your current method? It’s not very personalized and there’s no one there to tell me what I’m doing wrong. Are there any issues with your current yoga experience that you would like to improve upon? I want to make more time to do yoga! Would you be open to using a new method? If so, what? Yes, I would be open to using a method that’s less expensive than classes, but more hands on than just using an app or video. Do you use an app for yoga practice? No, because I never thought to do so. What are some features you would want to see on a yoga app? Helpful instructions from live teachers where you could send in a picture of a pose and they could tell you if you were doing it right or not.
How has yoga impacted your life? It’s helped me destress and be a calmer person. Any health issues that your yoga practice helps with? Anxiety. Would you define your yoga expertise as beginner, intermediate, or advanced? Beginner. How do you go about doing yoga? Do you go to classes, use an app, other? Mention all that apply and which one you use most. I’ll go to classes if they offered for free through my university. I also really like doing yoga with a guided YouTube video.

Hannah Feakes
20 years-old • Student • Beginner Yogi Though Hannah loves the stress-relieving aspect of yoga, she only practices when she feels as though she is forced to doing so by taking a one-credit class through her university. Because it is made as apart of her schedule like any other class, she feels an obligation to go. Hannah feels as though sometimes because the positions are hard, yoga isn’t as relaxing as she would like and would prefer if there was consistency in poses from class to class. Unfortunately, Hannah doesn’t dedicate much time to it because she has other extracurriculars. Though yoga has helped her with anxiety, she actually prefers meditation and uses an app called Headspace with guided meditation. She hasn’t tried a yoga app yet because she prefers in-person classes since she feels like it would relax her more if she wasn’t on her phone. However, if Hannah did try out a yoga app, she would like to see these features: • Guided meditation, someone talking • Visual of one showing poses • A simple, relaxing interface, with no bright colors • Music while doing yoga • Tips on living a better lifestyle in addition to yoga • Recipes and other exercises recommendations • Having someone calming speak to me during my practice Unappealing design/ background

Interview 2:
Name: Hannah Feakes Sex: Female Age: 20 Occupation: Student, Journalism
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS How often do you practice yoga? When I feel like it. I tend to only do yoga when I am taking a one-credit class at school because I think that the teachers know what they are doing as opposed to student instructors. Why do you practice yoga? I practice yoga with one-credit fitness classes because it is something I was forced to go to as it was apart of my schedule. Otherwise I won’t go. I do it to relieve my stress and make my body feel better. It makes me feel looser and more energized. What is the hardest part about doing yoga? Some of the moves are hard to do. Feeling like there is something wrong with your body when you can’t do the moves is makes something that is supposed to be relaxing a bit stressful. Are you doing anything to make this issue easier? No, because I don’t have the time. I don’t make time for this because I have other ways of relieving my stress such as meditation, working out at the gym, etc. How has yoga impacted your life? It was something for me to look forward to. I would feel relaxed after and my body was more toned. Any health issues that your yoga practice helps with? Anxiety. Would you define your yoga expertise as beginner, intermediate, or advanced? Beginner.
How do you go about doing yoga? Do you go to classes, use an app, other? Mention all that apply and which one you use most. Go to one-credit classes. Likes about your current method? I like having a teacher there and guiding me through poses and meditation. I like being talked to while I go into poses. Dislikes about your current method? One week we do something really relaxing and other times there is a lot of strengthening and movement and I don’t know what to expect when I go into class. It makes me nervous so I would like more consistency or insight on what we will do next week. I prefer yoga that is more meditative. Would you be open to using a new method? If so, what? I would try something new, but I don’t think I would like doing something other than an in-person class. Do you use an app for yoga practice? No, because I like when a teacher in person leads the yoga and guides me, but I feel as though an app would rush me and not relax me as much because I would be on my phone. I think it is cool, but I believe I personally would not use the app. What are some features you would want to see on a yoga app? • Guided meditation, someone talking to me • Visual of showing me poses. • A simple, relaxing interface, with no bright colors. • Music while I do yoga. Tips on living a better lifestyle in addition to yoga. • Recipes and other exercises recommendations. • I use my meditation app all time, Headspace. You can choose what session you want to do and I used to do it every night when my anxiety was bad, but now I use it as needed. When I use it at night it puts me right to sleep. I like the idea of having someone calming speak to me while I meditate.
23
Madison Fraitag
20 years-old • Student • Intermediate Yogi Madison aims to do yoga at least once a week, but has been struggling to find time to do this because she is too busy with extracurriculars and school. She practices yoga because it is a great stress-reliever and gentler exercise for her knee injury than something like running. Her struggle with yoga is not just finding the time to practice but sometimes getting herself to stop thinking about what she have going on outside of yoga, such as work. Yoga has motivated Madison to take care of herself better. Often times, going to the gym seems like a chore but she thoroughly enjoys yoga and it doesn’t seem like something she “has” to do. She prefers going to in-person classes at school because it is free, especially because classes at home are expensive. She has used videos, but thinks it is hard to relax when on a phone. Madison doesn’t mind that people are of all different levels in her yoga classes because the class is taught for every level of yoga expertise. She wishes she could designate a time and space for yoga so it is more important and less of a hobby and would be interested in using a personalized app in which you can start and stop as you please. She ideally would like a yoga app that provides descriptions of classes before starting them. For example, she would like to know what poses are in each class because some hurt her legs or she just doesn’t like them. Classes that pertain to certain categories like stretching or core would also be something Madison would like to see.

Interview 3:
Name: Madison Fraitag Sex: Female Age: 20 Occupation: Student, Film and Television arts
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS How often do you practice yoga? Once a week, but I haven’t in a while because I have been too busy with extracurriculars and school. Why do you practice yoga? Stress reliever. Good for my knee injury and easier than running. What is the hardest part about doing yoga? Finding the time and sometimes getting myself to stop thinking about what I have going on outside of yoga, such as work. Are you doing anything to make this issue easier? Now that I am used to my schedule, I am going to try and find times that work for me to make it apart of my routine. How has yoga impacted your life? Helps me take care if myself. Going to the gym seems like a chore, but yoga is me making enjoyable time for myself and doesn’t seem like something I have to do. Any health issues that your yoga practice helps with? Knee issues. I got surgery on it over a year ago, but now it feels nice to stretch my knee. Running or cardio can be hard to do, but yoga is gentler.
Likes about your current method? There are people of all different levels that come together to a class made doable for everyone. You don’t feel bad if you can’t do something. No one is an expert yogi in the class usually and I have the same demographic as them with mainly 20 year-old girls in the class. Dislikes about your current method? Classes not at the same time as when I am free. Are there any issues with your current yoga experience that you would like to improve upon? I wish I could designate a time and space for yoga so it is more important and less of a hobby. I want it to be something I can practice more often. Would you be open to using a new method? If so, what? Yeah, I think a personalized app would be great because when I am free I can start and stop. You can’t walk into a class late, but you can use the app whenever and for however long. Do you use an app for yoga practice? No, I always assumed they are paid and I wouldn’t be sure if it is worth it if I cant keep up. What are some features you would want to see on a yoga app? Descriptions of classes before you start them. Something that tells you what poses are in each class because some hurt my legs or I just don’t like them. Or something geared towards certain categories like stretching or core. I want something more personalized to me.
Would you define your yoga expertise as beginner, intermediate, or advanced? Intermediate. I know the poses well enough. How do you go about doing yoga? Do you go to classes, use an app, other? Mention all that apply and which one you use most. Mostly in-person classes at school because it is free. Ones at home are expensive. I have used videos, but it is hard to relax when it is on a phone.

Jackie Inzero
55 years-old • Staffer Analyst • Intermediate Yogi Jackie is a weekly yogi that goes to throw something different in the variety of gym classes she takes. She finds some of the positions too difficult, particularly downward dog. To ease this, she tries to take alternate positions and make modifications to what works for her. Yoga has helped Jackie fall asleep easier at night. She practices the deep breathing done in yoga to help her sleep. Concentrating on breathing has also allowed her to not think of her to-do list during her practice. She attends in-person classes because she likes having an instructor that is very knowledgeable on yoga and is reliable in aiding her in practice. However, she doesn’t like when instructors assume everyone knows yoga terms and uses these unfamiliar names with the class to describe positions and types of yoga. Jackie is interested in learning a bit more about yoga and it’s positions to perform better in class. She would be interested in trying an app but unsure if she would utilize it because she is so used to her current method. Jackie didn’t even know yoga apps existed. Some features she would want to see on this app are visuals such as videos or pictures to explain/show poses and modifications for poses.

Interview 4:
Name: Jackie Inzero Sex: Female Age: 55 Occupation: Staffing Analyst
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS How often do you practice yoga? Once a week. Why do you practice yoga? I like to do a variety of workouts/classes for the week and yoga is one of them. I do it to try and be more flexible. What is the hardest part about doing yoga? Some of the positions are too difficult, such as downward dog. Are you doing anything to make this issue easier? Take alternate positions and make modifications to what works for me. How has yoga impacted your life? Helps me fall asleep at night. I practice the breathing taught in yoga. When I can concentrate on my breathing I don’t think about my to-do list. Any health issues that your yoga practice helps with? Sleep. Would you define your yoga expertise as beginner, intermediate, or advanced? Intermediate.
How do you go about doing yoga? Do you go to classes, use an app, other? Mention all that apply and which one you use most. I go to in-person classes. Likes about your current method? I like having an instructor because she is very knowledgeable on yoga and I can rely on her to aid me in my practice. Dislikes about your current method? When they use unfamiliar terms to describe positions and types of yoga. Are there any issues with your current yoga experience that you would like to improve upon? I would just like to learn more about yoga and its positions so that I can perform better in my classes. Would you be open to using a new method? If so, what? I would try an app but I am not sure if I would like using it because I am so used to my current method. Do you use an app for yoga practice? No, I didn’t know there were apps for yoga...lack of knowledge. What are some features you would want to see on a yoga app? • Visuals such as videos or pictures to help me into poses. • Modifications for yoga poses.
••• Hannah, Madison, and Jackie generally did not enjoy interacting with the app because it was so difficult to navigate and see past the poor organization of categories/info. Jackie especially was bothered by how there was little info for each section and felt as if it was too limiting to learn much at all about yoga. Even if the app does have good information, the organization makes it almost unreadable.

Prototyping After completing all my research, both visual and user experience, I began brainstorming new ideas to improve the application based on feedback and what competitors are doing in terms of yoga apps. Something I kept in mind in redesigning the app is that people love the idea of customization in their application experience. Not only that, they want to feel like they are getting a full yoga workout when using the app over going to the gym. I believe if the new design shows both the customization factor and an effective workout, the app will be much more successful for users.
30
The prototyping phase includes some of my initial ideas for how the app will work, along with an information architecture and wireframes.
Making my information architecture also meant developing the Yoga_For_Health app a bit more and making decisions as far as what I want to change about what already exists. Based on my research, people want a cheap, easy, and informative way to include yoga practice into a busy schedule. I brainstormed a few things I would like to include: • Sign up/ login (with Facebook, Google, or just make a new account). • Customize profile (basic info, health issues/focuses for practice, other goals). • Make a plan for integrating your customized yoga into your life by choosing how much time, frequency, and duration a week you want to dedicate to yoga. • You can use the recommended plan made for you based on your profile or edit it with things you want to add/remove. • Plans are made up of short videos of yoga practice that are broken up over a week so that you can easily integrate it into your life when you get a little time in your day. • Alerts/reminders for a chosen time to do yoga go to phone and Apple Watch. • App records when you complete a session of your plan and compiles statistics on your attendance.

The wireframes contain a bit more detail in the screens compared to the flow chart. Following the sign up/login process, the app takes you to a welcome screen with some of your favorite or saved My Schedule for later videos. The customization factor appears there and on the Discovery screen where there Christina 56 are recommended videos for you along with the 20 apps top picks and new videos. The schedule page allows you to plan your yoga practice with videos you can integrate into your day with specific goals. 20 The use of icons make the app a bit more visual, but also still keeps that simplistic look. 12:45 AM

Comps Following the creation of my flow chart and wireframes, I went forward with the projected redesign and began bringing the app to life with colors, photos, and other icons. As I found in my visual and user research, people who use yoga and fitness apps want the app to look the part. In other words, my plan for executing the color scheme is to use soothing colors that are easy on the eyes and go with the theme of a yoga application. 36
Initial comps Feedback: Color schemes implemented into the first comps are too bright in some areas, but using very few colors made the app look plain in other places.

Final comps
38
After the initial comp feedback, I decided to go with a less harsh and wider color palette. With that, the app truly started to have a cohesive look and feel. With the many yoga apps out there, Pose Pod is different because it customizes your yoga experience to specific problems or target areas for your practice. The option to do short videos allow you to integrate the practice into your day. For example, a user may do “Yoga for energy” in the morning before work to start the day feeling energized and do “Yoga for procrastination” mid-day to invigorate that last minute motivation to finish a project. To keep you motivated, the app keeps track of your streaks and other statistics regarding your experience. Unlike the application before the redesign, it is much more visually appealing and user friendly. The icons and color palette make the experience of using it much more enjoyable and add to the calming vibe users want to have when doing yoga. The application prior was almost unuseable with all of its issues, but the redesign has transformed it into something people can use as a daily tool to keep up with yoga.
