H I L L S I D E RESIDENCE Located in one among the open market subdivisions in Davao City is a home the sits right below Shrine Hills. Located at a hundred meters above ground and facing east, it boasts a sighting of mid-rise urban views. And yet are there these three horizontal bars, some cubist clouds that hide everything inside it, which makes this home feel like it possesses an ambivert personality: extroverted openings that see the world from the inside; and introverted high enough to cover the openings.

Sitting on the hill at 112 meters above sea level, the downtown area of the city may be viewed from the hillside residence within the comfortable human viewing angle. Also, the hillside residence is right below the road rightof-way of the area called Shrine Hills, which consists of a church, broadcasting television and radio stations, and a viewing park.

ELEVATION: 10 M

ELEVATION: 112 M

PERSPECTIVE The hillside residence upon the entrance. Evident on the left side is the elevator clad with curtain wall to provide urban vista to the passenger/s.

This cross section is cut in which it could provide a better view in the following areas: two-car park on the ground floor, balcony with operable slide-and-park panels in wood finish on the second floor, swimming pool area surrounded with timber wall and ceiling on the third floor, and the roof deck. The swimming pool is supported by cambered cantilevered I-beams which carry the dead load of the concrete masonry walls and acrylic pool base, and the live load with hydraulic pressure and the dynamic forces exerted by the user/s.

FRONT ELEVATION The hillside residence upon the entrance. Exterior finish is kept minimal with the use of wood and few techniques of concrete plastering. The use of horizontal lines is consistent among different architectural elements in different scales.

This longitudinal section is cut in which it could provide a better view in the following areas: two-car park and storage room on the ground floor, balcony with operable slideand-park panels in wood finish and communal area for living, dining and kitchen on the second floor, swimming pool area surrounded with timber wall and ceiling and three bedrooms for children on the third floor, and master bedroom and deck area on roof deck level.

AERIAL PERSPECTIVE

As seen on the spot perspectives on the left side, having a pool area with acrylic base creates an interesting play of shadow and refracted light coming from the waves of pool water, producing water caustics towards the balcony below during the day, and during nighttime, pool lighting extends towards the balcony. As seen on the perspective on the right side, pool lighting also changes the mood of the architectural exterior.

LITTLE HILLSIDE RESIDENCE Version 2.0 of the hillside residence is the downsized version of its precedent, stripped off of its roof deck level. This scheme presents a different approach of still seeking balance between views and privacy, as well as protection from the tropical sun's glaring rays especially in the morning where the house is facing towards east.

FRONT ELEVATION IN NIGHT SCENE The hillside residence upon the entrance. The interiors of this home in the upper floors are clearest during sun down when interior lighting is brighter than exterior lighting, and when all operable louvers are perpendicular to the glazing surface.

This longitudinal section is cut in which it could provide a better view in the following areas: two-car park, storage room, hallway and stair on the ground floor, communal area for living, dining and kitchen on the second floor, and master bedroom, hallway to children's bedroom and stair on the third floor.

Orientation is one among the factors in designing according to climate response, and in this case, tropical design. The form of this building is conceived from its function according to its passive response against harsh weather conditions. The north face of this building has the most exposed fenestrations, receiving the cold front wind during winter and spring seasons of temperate regions (upper left). The east face is the facade and faces most of the morning sun; therefore, the two-storey operable louvers are used as vertical shadow devices against the morning sun, as well as an aesthetic presenting verticality (upper right). The south face is clad solid with concrete masonry (lower left). The west face is the retaining wall which serves as foundation against lateral earth pressure (lower right).

COMMERCIAL CONDOMINIUM Located in one of the prime corner locations within a central business district, this 67-storey commercial condomunium has a podium roof deck garden with a green wall which extends down to the ground along the sidewalk, and a five-storey interior atrium which allows the development to extend in height. The podium serves as the commerical zone as well as parking area on multiple floors. The tower is supported by diagrid on all sides while clad with stick system curtain walls.

(b) Structural conceptualization which determines the building form to be influenced by its structural frame. Different types of foundation are conceived due to the difference of podium and tower heights. Mat foundation should help prevent future differential settlement. Concrete piles redistribute total building load towards the soft-textured soil.

PERSPECTIVE A view of the podium area on a rainy day. The corner in which the entrace is located is clad with stick system curtain wall and aluminum composite panel. Surfaces of the building facing the corner of the sidewalk are green walls, an LED screen wall, and another wall clad with aluminum composite panel. Walls perpendicualr to parking floors are partially clad with perforated aluminum composite panel.

COWORKING SPACE / FLEXIBLE OFFICE There have been emerging trends in office design. Many designers have started to design offices against open plans. Some researches have also published the counterproductivity among employees working on fixed workstations within an open office plan. Coworking spaces cater to mostly millenials who are the young working adult generation, and are infamous for having shorter attention span due to the rapid development of technology in their generation. The said behavior may imply against fixed workstations. Some of the trends emerging recently are flexible office spaces, in which employees can sit anywhere they want depending on mood, may it be a sofa or a modular four-seater meeting space.

HOT DESK AREA Occupying most of the coworking space and flexible office floor area, it carries the mood of the development overall. The objectives in designing this area are the following: green office space, social function, visually dynamic aesthetic for open-space collaboration and sense of community within the coworking space.

RECEPTION The reception may be less quirky than the hot desk area, but it gives the feel of entering another office tower, especially for those who rented office unit spaces within, with glossy marble wall tiles, matte wood laminate counter and backpainted glass countertop.

FUNCTION AREA Open function area which accommodate either small or audiences extending to the hot desk thanks to the pivoted LED screen

PANTRY A modern space for people who need coffee to fuel their bodies in a wake state, and also for small talks during coffee breaks.
