There’s nothing like the start of a fresh year to spark new travel adventures. That’s why I’m thrilled to introduce you to our firstever Your World magazine. Our inaugural issue is a celebration of what I like to think of as the “great vacation” – the trip you plan with friends and family to pause the ordinary routines of life, get away together and really soak in the joys of travel. This past summer, I was aboard one of our 670-guest ships, Sirena, in Europe with my wife and two children, and it was exactly what we all needed. It reminded me of how important vacations are for all of us. We explored some of the most amazing places together: cli side villages near Amalfi, stunning Kotor, the sun-filled vineyards of Sicily. We laughed, explored and celebrated the easy pleasures of summer... fresh gelato on a hot day, watching the world go by from our veranda, visiting village markets to see what was in season. This issue focuses on some of my favorite summertime destinations across Europe and Alaska. On the following pages, you’ll take a deep dive into the food scene of Stockholm and other distinctive culinary regions of Sweden, as well as discover an incredible array of only-in-Alaska experiences. We’re also excited to take you on a voyage of the senses, bringing the Oceania Cruises experience to life through an entirely new lens. I hope our first issue of Your World inspires you to add a few more places and experiences to your travel list – and to start planning some of the journeys you’ve been dreaming of with your friends and family. We can’t wait to welcome you aboard the small and luxurious ships of Oceania Cruises for your next great vacation.
Warm regards,
Frank A. Del Rio President, Oceania Cruises

The glittering, historic city of Newport cemented its reputation as one of America’s most fashionable summer colonies by the late 19th century by the robber barons, artists and writers who came to holiday on idyllic beaches and
in grand seaside “cottages.” Today, the city embraces its storied past with museums and exquisitely preserved mansions, while also building upon that history with shopping, dining and outdoor pursuits for new generations of visitors.
A walk along downtown’s lower Thames Street will take you to the new Sailing Museum, where the sport – and those who have shaped it – are celebrated. Nearby Bellevue Avenue is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame and several of the famous Newport Mansions, all open for tours. To view more Gilded Age architecture, including The Breakers, Marble House and The Elms, stroll the 3.5-mile-long seaside Cli Walk. This pedestrian path can be accessed via a few egress points between Memorial and Narragansett Avenues.
Excellent dining options abound in Newport. Thames Street Kitchen (TSK) is known for its locally sourced seasonal ingredients. Don’t miss their inventive starters or amazing cuts of meat – among the favorites of repeat visitors. Newport is also home to The White Horse Tavern, the United States’ oldest continually operating restaurant. Established in 1673, its white tablecloths are a backdrop for traditional farm-to-table fare. If it’s Italian cuisine you seek, head to Pasta Beach on Bellevue Avenue for amazing pastas, pizzas and more.
The Kristen Coates Gallery is Newport’s go-to spot for beachchic fine art, photography and gifts for the home, all sourced by the shop’s eponymous owner. For fine country clothing that embraces the local style, visit Royal Male, which o ers classic brands including Barbour and Saint James from its two downtown locations. Take a piece of Newport history home after visiting the Newport Historical Society. Shop a selection of local
books, gifts and heritage brands, including Caswell-Massey apothecary products worn by Newport frequenters George Washington and John F. Kennedy.
Explore the nearby wharves after sampling the Clarke Cooke House’s espresso martini, a local delight. Feeling like a sailor?
The Black Pearl o ers a classic Dark ’n Stormy cocktail (on the rocks or frozen), a favorite of mariners making their way between Bermuda, Newport and the Caribbean. For a special treat, follow up a tour of the Marble House with afternoon tea service at The Chinese Tea House Café, an experience that will surely transport you back in time to the Gilded Age.

Alaska is awe-inspiring, thanks to its spectacular surroundings, amazing wildlife and fascinating history.
Most cruises include a stop in Ketchikan, the southernmost gateway to the Inside Passage, and a visit to this charming town will quickly
reveal what it is best known for: the world’s largest collection of totem poles (don’t miss the Totem Heritage Center and Saxman Totem Park); a thriving salmon-fishing industry; and rich Alaskan heritage, showcased in its museums, galleries and attractions.
Ketchikan is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, which gave the city a thriving timberlogging industry during its early days. Witness this history firsthand at the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where you’ll be entertained by the world’s best lumberjacks who compete in a friendly competition of axe throwing, tree climbing and log rolling. Immerse yourself in another local industry by booking a fishing charter where you can reel in salmon or halibut, or watch Bering Sea fishermen haul crab pots. For an unforgettable experience, take a scenic flight over glacier-carved valleys on a Misty Fjords Air seaplane.
Not surprisingly, you’ll find fresh salmon on most Ketchikan menus, whether it’s grilled, smoked or in burger form. Other local fresh catches include halibut and king crab, also prepared in a variety of ways. No matter where you dine, start o with a cup of chowder. For the indecisive diner, Annabelle’s Famous Keg and Chowder House o ers a three-chowder sampler (clam, smoked salmon and seafood) with house-made cannery bread. For delicious seafood and beautiful views, visit the Alaska Fish House, which o ers a rustic, cannery-style
ambience and postcard-perfect vistas. Order from the menu of fresh fish dishes or enlist the kitchen to cook your catch for you.
Discover a treasure trove of authentic and locally made Alaska Native art that showcases the state’s nature and wildlife. For fine jewelry and gifts, Julie’s is a mainstay, with two locations selling Alaska-inspired products including pendants, paintings, sculptures and carvings. Step back
in time at Creek Street, a historic overwater boardwalk that was Ketchikan’s red-light district in the early 1900s. Today, it’s home to a collection of preserved homes, galleries and one-of-a-kind shops like The Captain’s Lady, Sam McGee’s and Poker Creek Gold.
Beer lovers will want to belly up to one of Ketchikan’s bars and order a local brew. The Alaskan Brewing Company is an awardwinning craft brewery based in Juneau, but you’ll find its o erings statewide. Order an Alaskan Amber and discover why it’s a year-round favorite. Ketchikan has its own microbrewery as well, so make your way to Bawden Street Brewing Company downtown for local sips. For even more variety, the Asylum bar o ers 30 beers on tap, and the Bar Harbor Ale House features more than 80 varieties of handcrafted beer, many of which are Alaskan brews.

Ahaven for innovation thanks to a budding startup scene, Lisbon is a city with creativity running through its veins. The cosmopolitan destination o ers a slew of boutique art galleries, a thriving fado folk music scene,
traditional seafood-based cuisine, round-the-clock nightlife and Instagram-ready architecture. Several viewpoints throughout the city provide the perfect vantage for taking in its distinctive panorama and the Tagus River.
Get ready for hills and stairs. Lisbon is a patchwork of historical neighborhoods with steep and narrow cobblestone streets, tiny cafés and hole-in-the-wall restaurants. In Alfama, the city’s oldest district, wander the back streets for an unfiltered peek into everyday Lisbon life. While you’re there, visit the ancient Castelo de São Jorge and stroll its defense walls for breathtaking views of the city. The popular Belém district dates back to the 1500s and its Monastery of the Hieronymites and Tower of Belém are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site.
Pastry lovers should make the pilgrimage to Pastéis de Belém to try the well-known Pastel de Belém, the original Portuguese pastel de nata custard tart. Expect long but fast-moving lines to grab these warm treats made from a secret recipe.
For lunch, meat lovers can try a prego, a traditional Portuguese sandwich piled with thinly sliced, garlic-marinated beef. O Prego da Peixaria is considered by
many to be the first dedicated prego restaurant in the city and specializes in various renditions of this classic dish at its locations.
Don’t leave town without trying bacalhau, flaky salted codfish, a menu staple at most local seafood restaurants. Try slivers of this delicacy served with boiled eggs, potatoes and peppers at Restaurante Laurentina.
In Lisbon’s trendy Chiado district, visit lovely Rua Garrett, a street that dates back to the 1700s. Here, behind intricately tiled façades, you’ll find boutique vintage shops, jewelers, highend handcrafted shoes and the bookstore Bertrand, which has been open since 1732, earning it the Guinness World Records title of world’s oldest bookshop.
Sample the traditional ginjinha, a potent Portuguese spirit made from aguardente, sour cherries, sugar and spices. Grab a shot or a bottle at the tiny, standingroom-only bar A Ginjinha, which has been serving patrons since the 1800s.

Swedish cuisine is rooted in locally produced, ethically sourced and seasonal ingredients. In Stockholm, you’ll find worldclass chefs running Michelinstarred restaurants, cafés serving the region’s beloved cinnamon buns, a thriving microbrewing industry, chic cocktail bars, niche food festivals, and food trucks traversing the city’s streets. Traditional Swedish soul food, known as husmanskost, highlights simple, hearty ingredients – think potatoes, pickled herring, cured salmon and meatballs made from reindeer, moose and wild boar – often topped with lingonberries, the most Nordic of condiments.
Head over to Meatballs for the People, Sweden’s first and only restaurant dedicated to this iconic dish. Sample various flavors including deer, bear and moose.
Located in Stockholm’s old town, Restaurang Tradition o ers classics including Swedish potato pancakes with fried pork and lingonberries (raggmunk med stekt fläsk), and potato dumplings filled with pork and served with browned butter and lingonberries (kroppkakor).
Bakficka (back pocket) eateries are bistros, sometimes run by Michelin-starred chefs, that o er more a ordable lunch options than their fine-dining sister restaurants. Try pickled herring, or cured salmon with dill creamed potatoes, at Operakällarens Bakfickan, which has been in operation since 1962.
Insider tip: Keep an eye out for signs that say “Dagens rätt” or “Dagens lunch.” This means “dish of the day,” and indicates a more a ordable, but still high-quality, option.
Stockholm is home to numerous upscale fusion restaurants that merge locally sourced ingredients with the Swedish love for Asian cuisines. For an exquisite fusion lunch with a view, visit Tak (“roof” in Swedish) for slowbraised pork belly, sushi bowls and crispy duck.

Located on the island of Gotland, Visby is a former Viking stronghold dating from the 12th century. This UNESCOprotected site is one of the best-preserved medieval centers, with cobblestone streets and fascinating ruins.
Visby is a beloved getaway among Swedes during summer months. One of the region’s largest trading towns in medieval times, it was the center of the Hanseatic League in the Baltic from the 12th to the 14th century.
Seafood lovers looking to dine beyond the city limits know to head west. Gothenburg and the fishing villages dotting the Bohuslän coastline are where locals flock for Sweden’s big five shellfish: shrimp, crayfish, mussels, oysters and lobster. The cold, clean waters of the North Sea provide the perfect ecosystem for shellfish to fully mature and become more flavorful, making Gothenburg a pescatarian’s dream.
Heaven 23 at Gothia Towers serves the legendary räksmörgås, an open-faced sandwich piled high with hand-peeled shrimp, boiled eggs and fish roe.
Rent a car and village-hop along the coast; a variety of destinations are within 1.5 hours of Gothenburg. Ninety percent of all oysters in Sweden come from the waters around the coastal village of Grebbestad, so head there and stop at 19th-century boathouse Everts Sjöbod to pick yours right from the dock.
A popular stop for the Swedish Royal Family, Musselbaren in Ljungskile runs mussel expeditions where you can harvest and cook your own mussels. In Smögen, harvest
and steam langoustines with Smögens Fiske & Skärgårdsturer for the freshest sea-to-table experience.
If a farm-to-table meal is what you crave, journey a few hours east of Stockholm to the Baltic Sea island of Gotland, home to Sweden’s revered Gotland sheep and the rustic Hånnlamb (“sheep with horns”), also known as gutefår, which were rescued from near extinction in the early 1900s. Such an abundance of sheep means you’ll find fresh lamb on the menus of many local restaurants, including Munkkällaren

Serves 2
1 tablespoon butter
4 saffron threads, crushed
¾ cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk
2 eggs
1 tablespoon cognac
Pinch each of cardamom and salt
2 tablespoons clarified butter
1 cup fresh berries
2 tablespoons cardamom-infused sugar
½ cup crème fraîche
In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the butter and saffron and warm until the butter melts. Remove from the heat and steep for 5 minutes.
In a blender, combine the flour, milk, eggs, cognac, cardamom, salt and saffron butter and mix on low speed just until blended, about 1 minute. Refrigerate the batter for at least 1 hour and up to overnight. Before making the crêpes, bring the batter to room temperature and ensure it is the consistency of light cream, adjusting with milk as needed.
In a 10-inch sauté pan over medium-high heat, melt just enough clarified butter to thinly coat the pan. When the pan is hot, lift the pan off the heat and pour in just enough batter to thinly coat the pan.
Quickly swirl the pan so the batter coats the entire bottom. Return the pan to heat and cook the crêpe until the batter sets and the edges lift, about 1 minute. Flip the crêpe and cook the other side, which will take less time. Transfer the crêpe to a plate and make additional crêpes with the remaining butter and batter.
In a small bowl, stir together the berries and sugar. Fold the warm crêpes in quarters and top with the berries and a dollop of crème fraîche.

Stockholm is one of the top co ee-consuming cities in the world, and its co ee culture is deeply rooted in the tradition of fika Pronounced “fee-ka,” this custom involves taking the occasional break from work to socialize over co ee and pastries. And no pastry is more beloved in Stockholm than the cinnamon bun.
In fact, Sweden celebrates Cinnamon Bun Day (Kanelbullens dag) every October 4. No matter the day, you can savor the sweet treat at café Vete-Katten, which has been a local favorite for both cinnamon and cardamom buns since its opening in 1928.
More modern fika options include Café Saturnus, MR Cake, Green Rabbit and Bröd & Salt, a local chain of artisanal bakeries.
In Sweden’s northern High Coast region, you’ll find the country’s first gin distillery, which opened in 2011. Ihave been thinking about that cruise you mentioned.”
This recent comment from one of my adult sons about the possibility of taking a Caribbean cruise next year will go down as one of my all-time favorites. I know that cruising to ports in Saint Vincent and Barbados will make us happy once we’re on our way, but I also know that there is joy to be had long before we bury our toes in the sand.
Recent studies suggest that the anticipatory happiness that comes from planning and thinking about an upcoming trip is good for us. The expectation of a good time, it turns out, can extend the pleasure we experience while traveling. It’s why “thinking about that cruise” is exactly what I want for my sons – Ethan and Cameron – as we start to chat about our next family vacation.
Although I have more than 20 years of experience working in the family travel space, I’ve lately had fewer opportunities to travel with my adult children. That has made it even more important for us to maximize the enjoyment of our journeys together. These five tips have helped us –and will help you – extend the fun of a vacation to the pre-trip stage.
The Greeks, Romans and Italians have all woven their history into Sorrento, where the lemons are considered the best in the world thanks to the mineral-rich volcanic soil provided by
Taking time before your trip to start building excitement can stoke the fires of happiness long before you get on the plane. Encourage traveling family members to gather information about your destinations, to read the cruise line’s website, to pore over photos of the places you plan to visit and to dive into the history of those locales. This creates talking points and excitement for the upcoming trip.
Women are often the primary trip planners in a family, and that responsibility can turn into one more chore in a day already full of them. To avoid this scenario, get the whole family involved in the planning. It lightens the load, but also heightens each traveler’s sense of ownership over the vacation. Make a list of all the pre-trip tasks that need to be accomplished (travel document checks, travel insurance, excursion choices), then give everyone something to do and a date to report back on progress.
Cruises provide many opportunities for spontaneous fun, but a little forethought can guarantee the good times. If you’re planning a multifamily or multigenerational vacation, delegate parts of the planning to each group. Have the dads organize a surprise outing for the entire party or enlist them to plan an itinerary for a day at sea.
More people involved in trip planning means more reasons to connect – and that’s a good thing. Studies show that increased pre-trip communication can help build that anticipatory happiness. Set up a weekly video call to share planning progress and get input from others. But don’t make those calls allbusiness a airs. Giving everyone permission to slow down before the vacation is a good thing. It’ll allow you to feel more relaxed, remember why you love spending time with your clan and let those good feelings flow.
On your cruise, you and your family will gather, share inside jokes and create lasting memories. But even before you go, there are opportunities to spread the joy you’re feeling. Talk with friends and family about the planning process and listen as they share their own vacation experiences. Those kinds of exchanges – even with those who won’t be traveling with you – can bring others happiness, too. And who knows, maybe it’ll get them thinking about planning their next cruise with you.
A trip to Northern Europe leads to inner transformation.

Ihave always been “indoorsy.”
I live in a downtown Miami high-rise and have a penchant for aggressively air-conditioned environments. As a travel writer who reviews luxurious destinations for a living, my idea of roughing it is staying at a hotel without turn-down service. While I love outdoor gear – think Moncler pu er jackets and Goldbergh boots – I’m not necessarily interested in putting it to the test in the elements. I’m much more about the après than the ski.
But, like all of us, my life changed during the pandemic. During lockdown, my morning runs took on a di erent significance. Instead of zoning out to music or studiously tracking my pace on my Garmin, I started to really notice my surroundings. And I was surprised to realize how much comfort it brought me to simply be outside, feeling the sun on my face, watching the waters of Biscayne Bay lap the Venetian Causeway. I started to become, dare I say it, outdoorsy.
What I stumbled upon in Miami in 2020 is a concept that originated in Norway back in the 1850s by the playwright Henrik Ibsen. Known as friluftsliv, it’s centered on the value of spending time outdoors in nature, purely for pleasure and emotional and physical well-being. It has been part of Norwegian culture for generations and, buoyed by my Miami experience, I was inspired to search for friluftsliv in the country where it began.
During a cruise along the Norwegian coast last summer, my ship pulled into port in Tromsø, the small city known as the Paris of the North. Several passengers opted to stroll around the bustling city center, but I chose to take the Fjellheisen cable car some 1,300 feet up to Storsteinen, where I began a 90-minute hike to the top of Fløya mountain. My small group separated into pairs and trios as we started our ascent, but because I stopped so frequently to take in the new-to-me views, I was soon alone. From this height, the city unfurled beneath me, an urban tapestry bisected by the navy-blue waters of ords running through it.
The largest city in northern Norway, Tromsø features modern architecture, breathtaking views from Mount Storsteinen and ample opportunities for communing with nature.
But I was focused on the natural beauty that surrounded Tromsø: dark mountains like distant and silent sentinels, o set against a slate-gray sky blanketed with a thick layer of clouds. The June weather was mild, no jacket required. As I turned to face the emerald hillside I was climbing, I was delighted to see patches of snow, which looked like mounds of spilled sugar. The air was fresh with the scents of earth and grass, and clouds skidding across the sky drew my eye toward the higher, snowcapped mountains in the distance. I moved to the side of the trail to stop and take it all in. It was such a treat for eyes unaccustomed to this mountainous splendor. I put down my phone and instinctively took several deep and leisurely breaths. It didn’t matter that my companions were now far ahead of me, or that the grass I sat on was slightly damp. My Instagram could wait. In those quiet, solitary moments, I felt the magic of the mountains. I was perfectly content. I felt the friluftsliv.
A few weeks later, as I hiked across Denmark, I felt it again. I’d challenged myself to a strenuous trek. Although the country’s topography is flat by European standards, it’s hilly compared to Miami, and there were times when I struggled, hu ng up deceptively gentle looking hills, weighed down by a too-heavy backpack and problems I thought I’d left at home. But the scenery richly rewarded my e orts.
I walked through golden fields of wheat that seemed to wave a welcome in the summer breeze. Pebbled coastal paths led me along lakes that looked as big as the sea. Birds bobbed on the mirror-flat waters and colorful butterflies flitted above long grass lining the shores. Because the trek wasn’t a race, I could go at an unhurried pace, unconcerned about my finish time. And so stops to adjust my boots or savor a snack weren’t the irritating delays they would have been during a half-marathon. Instead, they were invitations to savor my surroundings, to smell the tang in the air and to be refreshed by the breeze on my face. Sure, I felt tired and achy from traipsing as many as 18 miles a day. But when I paused to pay attention to the landscape, all I felt was happy to be alive and so very lucky to be there.
Now my European adventure is behind me and I’m back amid Miami’s gleaming glass towers, constant tra c and cacophony of jackhammers. To be fair, the city hasn’t changed. But I have. I have a deeper appreciation for nature. Spending time outside has been a pleasure and has prompted serious selfreflection. I have a new clarity about who I am and what I want. I am a woman who is stronger than I thought, who is resilient and who can do hard things. And what I want now is to explore much more of the outdoors – dressed in the most stylish outdoorsy gear, of course.
In those quiet, solitary moments, I felt the magic of the mountains. I was perfectly content. I felt the frilu sliv.

Visit one of the world’s largest concentrations of brown bears at Admiralty Island National Monument.
For centuries, this island situated approximately 15 miles from Juneau has been home to the Indigenous Tlingit people. They call it Kootznoowoo, or “fortress of the bear,” for good reason. About 1,600 brown bears live on the island, which spans more than 956,000 acres, making the population one of the highest concentrations anywhere in the world. On arrival, a ranger will meet and guide you on a mile-long hike to the Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area observation tower, from which you can spot bears enjoying their favorite snack of salmon.
LeConte Glacier – one of the southernmost tidewater glaciers in North America – is located in a 12-mile-long ord at the head of LeConte Bay. Book a guided tour for a truly unforgettable adventure as you wade through icebergladen waters before arriving at your destination, where you may even catch a glimpse of ice chunks breaking o , known as glacier calving. As an added bonus, harbor seals can often be spotted resting on ice sheets with their pups.

You won’t soon forget the thrill of spotting a humpback whale in the wild. One of the best places to view these magnificent creatures is on an excursion through the Icy Strait, which is known for its nutrient-rich waters. The most acrobatic of whales, humpbacks can often be seen tail and fin slapping, peering their heads above water and breaching. Orcas, sea lions, seals and porpoises also call these waters home.

Visit the world’s largest collection of totem poles.
Totem poles tell stories, and the world’s most extensive collection can be found in Ketchikan. At the Totem Heritage Center, visitors can learn about the traditions of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples, who have used totems (many displayed here date back to the 19th century) to honor specific individuals in a community and to convey deep meaning. Book a guided visit to gain a better understanding of the native people of the Northwest Coast who created these sentinels, then head to Totem Bight State Historical Park to see totems preserved in nature.
There’s nothing like the feeling of the wind on your cheeks as you’re whisked across a wintry landscape by a team of sled dogs. Whether you’re sitting up front or standing in the musher’s position, dogsledding is a pinch-me moment few get to experience. Add to the adventure by doing it atop the Mendenhall Glacier!
This small seaside city has deep roots with the Indigenous Tlingit people and is regarded for its rich culture and history. It is also a wellknown destination for salmon and halibut fishing.
Alaskan chefs know their way around the famous king salmon, which often makes its way to your plate the same day it’s caught. You’ll find the freshest catch at restaurants in cruise ports including Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan. Two to try: James Beard Foundation Award–semi-finalist Beak in Sitka, and Salt in Juneau.
Reid Falls is actually two separate waterfalls. Lower Reid Falls is located about 10 minutes up a mountainside and is a worthwhile hike for a day-tripper. You can grab a trail map at the visitor center, but the path is well marked and well traveled. Those looking for more of a challenge can visit Upper Reid Falls (about 5 miles round trip). If you’d rather see the falls without the hike, head for the Gold Rush Cemetery in the woods past the parking area; a trail just beyond it leads to a gorgeous view of the lower falls.
The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve just outside of Haines is home to one of the world’s largest populations of America’s national bird. Between 200 and 400 bald eagles call the area home year-round. A 2-mile-long riverside trail is a prime place for viewing the majestic creatures and other animals, including moose and bears, that frequent the area.

Leaving Alaska without digging into the history and impact of the Klondike Gold Rush would be a missed opportunity. Skagway is a great first stop; next, head to the ghost town of Dyea for a better understanding of life in the gold rush era. Self-guided tours illuminate the once-booming town’s history, as well as the natural elements that have reclaimed this National Historic Landmark.

Sitka National Historical Park is worth exploring on your own or with a guide, but to truly understand the history of Sitka’s people, plan to attend the Sitka Tribe’s Naa Kahidi Dance Show. The colorful, 30-minute performance takes place in a traditional Tlingit Clan House and showcases Tlingit traditions and history. Don’t miss the chance to meet the dancers after the performance for photos and deeper conversations.
