Kingdom of Boredom – Exhibitions in Laundrettes

Using laundrettes as exhibition places turns something ordinary into a place that is interesting and exciting. The exhibition aims to challenge the viewer’s idea of the way in which we view and perceive art, and to act as a reminder that there is an element of the artistic to so many aspects of our day to day lives. • Permanent shows Visual art by local and international artists will be displayed in your laundrette, giving everyday life items a special place to shine. Inviting your customers, and visitors, to re-consider the ordinary and its meaning. The works will be either by groups or single artists and will be accompanied by short descriptions • WANTED sock project To include the exhibition in your daily business, this is a participatory, selfexplanatory project for your customers: They can draw a sock that they lost on WANTED posters provided by us and the best ones will be displayed at the end of the festival • Events Special Events like an Opening Night for your customers and visitors possible

Dates: • FaB takes place from 27.5.2016 – 12.6.2016 • Kingdom of Boredom can be set up for a longer or shorter period of time surrounding the festival – whatever you like!

About the Curator Christine Stender is a student at Bath Spa University, on the Arts Management MA. Born in 1991, in Düsseldorf, Germany, she has a background in marketing (BA in International Marketing at Fontys Venlo, NL) and experience from target group analysis to audience development and customer satisfaction analysis. Her aim is to explore the beneficial relationship between local businesses and the arts sector. The creative industries have a huge financial impact on a country’s economy, and generated more than £8 million per hour in the UK in the last years, a fact that should benefit small businesses as well as artists. Working as a volunteer with the Frings Arts Bath Festival gives her the opportunity to interact with both, artists and business owners to figure out ways to collaborate more easily and more efficiently. Being an artist herself, helps the curator to understand both parties and to set up an exhibition that will, in addition to its broader meaning, be beautiful and of high artistic merit.

About FaB Fringe Arts Bath organises Bath’s only annual Visual Arts festival, and is part of, but run independently from, Bath Fringe Festival. We promote contemporary art in the B&NES region, supporting early career artists and curators, and those who find it difficult to break into (or prefer to operate outside of) the gallery based art scene. FaB is a not for profit voluntary organisation, and our volunteers gain valuable experience in all aspects of running an Arts organisation. FaB works with regional Arts and Community organisations, and collaborations vary in scope from the provision of exhibition space and inclusion in FaB’s annual Visual Arts Programme to close involvement in project development. Collaborators include Keynsham Arts, ARTiculate, the Big Issue, Fresh Arts Bath and Creativity Works. FaB uses unusual exhibition spaces, from street corners to empty shops and cafés, taking art to people who would not normally visit galleries. FaB 2015 • We supported over 200 artists • 32 FaB shows and events • We promoted many other events ran by local groups and artists • FaB attracted an audience of nearly 10,000 visitors
