The greatest tradition of all. Marking the 50th anniversary of Bob Devaney’s arrival at Nebraska, the Omaha World-Herald in 2012 set out to discover which traditions Husker football fans cherished the most. Readers responded that one stood out above the rest: the 50-year sellout streak at Memorial Stadium. As a result, this year’s Focus on Nebraska photography contest was designed to capture all of the excitement of Saturdays in Lincoln. The online contest drew hundreds of submissions in 20 categories, and we tabulated thousands of votes in choosing the favorites. World-Herald staff members also weighed in, choosing a photo as an “editors’ choice” in each category. The book combines the fans’ submissions with World-Herald photography to capture the five decades of sellouts at Memorial Stadium. The result is a tribute to the foundation of Husker football: the fans. Every fall they prove that

there is no place like Nebraska.

THIS PAGE: Singer Gordon MacRae, who lived in Lincoln, stopped between engagements in Cincinnati and Los Angeles to sing the national anthem at the Kansas game on a blustery November day. The star of the musical “Oklahoma!” sang the anthem occasionally at home games for more than a decade. • Below, Tom Osborne’s unranked Nebraska team beat Alabama coaching legend Bear Bryant 31-24 in a nonconference matchup. A young Husker fan snatched Bryant’s trademark houndstooth hat when the teams reappeared after halftime, but a Nebraska trooper retrieved it for the Alabama coach. “I’m running low on my supply,” Bryant said of his hats afterward. FACING PAGE: How exciting was the Alabama game? The face of Mike McCann, top, told the story. • Don McPherson on drums and brother Robert and son Scott on trombone proved at the Baylor game that the alumni band hadn’t missed a beat.

Tim and Jeana Treacy of Chicago, left, joined Doug and Mary Carper of Lincoln for the Oklahoma State game.

THIS PAGE: The Big Eight’s final game featured longtime rivals Nebraska and Oklahoma. Tom Osborne again faced Howard Schnellenberger, right, who had led Miami past the Huskers in the 1984 Orange Bowl. The game was the last of the annual matchups that often had settled conference championships, and not always the way fans wanted. “A lot of the memories, unfortunately, are negative, “ said fan Dwight Wininger of Lincoln. “And it seemed like so many of the heartbreakers were in Lincoln.” All the pregame drama was lost, however, as NU blasted the Sooners 37-0. FACING PAGE: A win over Oklahoma was still enough to set off an attack on Memorial Stadium goalposts. Fans rushed the field after the game, mobbed the team at the 40-yard line and bounced on goalposts to the beat of Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration.”
