Construction of door and jamb Moddica hinges are designed for use in wooden joinery and can be used with both solid and hollow core doors. Vertical Load - Weight of the door Horizontal Load - Door weight - Door height to width ratio - Position of hinges Number of Hinges Doors are typically fitted with 3 hinges. Doors 8’ and over should be fitted with a minimum of 4 hinges to prevent warping. Location of Hinges The usual positioning of hinges is symmetrical. Size, weight, construction and use of the door must be considered when determining the required number of hinges . Top and bottom hinges should be as far apart as is reasonable thereby maximizing side load bearing ability. Positioning of hinges for extra heavy doors or doors with a low height to width ratio should be modified to maximize side load bearing ability. Extra Wide Doors Wider doors result in increased stresses exerted on the hinge. Factors determining required adjustments are calculated by dividing the door height by the door width. See Side Loading Calculations Table. No allowances are required for a factor of 2 or greater. If the factor is less than two, the door mass needs to be increased by the value required bringing the factor to two. See Side Loading Calculations Table.

Side Loading Calculations Example: Height 6’8” divided by Width 3’6” = Factor 1.90. 10% increase of mass of door leaf is required to bring the factor to 2. Moddica recommends all doors over 4 foot wide should have a minimum of 4 hinges, irrespective of height. Doors over 8’0” and 4’0” wide should have 5 hinges per door.
