Narco Wars The global war on drugs

MARTIN SPECHT

NARCO WA R S

DER GLOBALE DROGENKRIEG Ch. Links Verlag

Martin Specht’s captivating reports have their origins at the scene of conflict in the global war on drugs. He meets a contract killer who murders for the Colombian drug cartel in Honduras, accompanies the Mexican police and the Afghan army on their controversial missions in the war on drugs, talks to investigators at the American DEA about their covert operations and with “Mr. Cocaine” at Europol about smuggling routes to Europe, and he researches how the market for amphetamines is linked to the Syrian civil war. Just like the “war on terror,” the “war on drugs” declared in 1971 has long since blurred the boundaries between criminal prosecution under the rule of law and secret-service operations. The international community of states is embroiled in a conflict with an uncertain outcome. Martin Specht’s eyewitness reports of the global war on drugs show that the problem won’t be solved with simple solutions.

Saying Goodbye to a Myth Six decades of Cuban revolution – A critical assessment

H ANNE S BAHR M A N N

ABSCHIED VOM MYTHOS Sechs Jahrzehnte kubanische Revolution Eine kritische Bilanz

Ch. Links Verlag

Cuba used to be a relatively affluent country. Blessed with mineral resources and fertile soils, this biggest island in the Caribbean was once the world’s largest producer of sugar. Its gross national product was greater than Mexico’s, the number of doctors per capita was higher than in the United States, and its educational system was on par with Western Europe. Six decades after the victory of the revolution, this one-time wealth has run its course and the average working wage is 25 euros a month. The concept of the New Man is history, of socialist society too, and the disparity between rich and poor is constantly growing. Since the easing of relations with the United States, Raúl Castro has administered the transition to a future that makes socialism seem like a brief interlude between capitalism and capitalism. But a look behind the scenes reveals that power rests more firmly than ever in the hands on one family: the Castros.

Highly Flammable How the center’s silence makes the right wing strong Experiences of a mayor who resigned Markus Nierth · Juliane Streich

Brandgefährlich

Wie das Schweigen der Mitte die Rechten stark macht Erfahrungen eines zurückgetretenen Ortsbürgermeisters

Markus Nierth, who stepped down from his office as local mayor of Tröglitz due to xenophobic agitation, tells about incidents in the southern part of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, investigating the circumstances and structures behind them which are representative for the state of affairs in many parts of Germany. He shows the extremism of the supposed center and uses a concrete example to expose the mechanisms that, taken together, have disastrous consequences: the silence of the majority, growing complicity – secret or openly affirmative – with right-wing radicals, the inactivity of politicians, and the many, quiet fellow travelers. He also discusses parallel developments in BadenWürttemberg and Bavaria. The focus of this book is Nierth’s actual experiences as mayor, which he combines with political demands to better protect committed politicians at the communal level and get people more involved socially.

Publications of the Independent Commission of Historians (UHK)

The History of the Federal Intelligence Service from Its Founding to 1968 To this very day there are countless myths and legends about the Gehlen Organization and its successor, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). The high-level Independent Commission of Historians (UHK) has been reappraising the history of the BND for the past five years and now presents a comprehensive scholarly work – a singular publication project, as never before has an active secret service granted historians open access to its archives. The result is a multifaceted picture of the West German intelligence service, of its development and its activities from 1945 to 1968, the period during which Reinhard Gehlen had a formative influence on this institution shrouded in mystery. Eliminating a blank spot in the historiography of the Federal Republic, at the same time it offers an insightful new perspective on the ongoing debate since the Snowden disclosures about the tense relationship between secret services and democracy, between security and liberty in a democratic state based on the rule of law. The project comprises thirteen volumes and spans the entire history of the BND. The first four volumes are being published in September 2016.

The Cold War was also a war between secret services. For the first time ever, hitherto unknown files of the West German Federal Intelligence Service and the East German State Security reveal the background, aims, and especially the consequences of East Berlin’s first “concentrated strike” against the Gehlen Organization in the fall of 1953. The move resulted in several hundred alleged spies being arrested in the GDR, the fates of whom are examined here through the lens of two secret service agencies. This intelligence war did not take place behind closed doors. State Security launched an unprecedented media campaign to publicly discredit the Gehlen Organization. The Stasi chalked up a “victory” with its operation, whereas the future Federal Intelligence Service was not only forced to remedy security issues in late 1953, it also had to repair its reputation – in the Federal Chancellery, with the CIA, and in the eyes of the West German public.

Genocide in German Southwest Africa The Colonial War (1904 – 1908) in Namibia and Its Consequences

Jürgen Zimmerer ∙ Joachim Zeller (Hg.)

Völkermord in DeutschSüdwestafrika Der Kolonialkrieg (1904 –1908) in Namibia und seine Folgen

The German Empire’s colonial war against the Herero and Nama in German Southwest Africa was more than a century ago but is still perceived as a collective trauma in contemporary Namibia. The military operations of the German protection force ended in genocide, followed by concentrations camps being set up throughout the country. Almost every other African prisoner of war died in these camps. The vanquished Africans not only lost their land and cattle but were also subject to a rigid system of control. This new and updated edition examines the causes, course, and consequences of this colonial war. The historical perspectives of both sides, Germans and Africans, are given equal consideration.

3rd, updated edition 280 pages ISBN 978-3-86153-898-1 Released in March 2016 PRESS REVIEWS “The authors all have an exceptional knowledge of their subject and they range over the whole period from the origins of the war to the demands of the Herero for damages to be paid by the Federal Government and by German firms. This richly illustrated book can be recom-mended to anyone who wishes to gain well-researched and comprehensive information about a conflict viewed by the German side as a war of annihilation.” Die Zeit “The 14 authors of this book offer an out¬standing guide to the events of this little known period of history and to the many and various ways in which it can be interpreted.” Tagesspiegel

From the jungles of the Congo to a courtroom in Germany, this book traces the story of a well-organised armed group which rapes women, loots villages and murders civilians – crimes partly masterminded in Germany. The FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwandan) is a Rwandan Hutu militia based in Eastern Congo in which the perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide reorganised themselves. Its two most senior political leaders live in Germany. In 2011 they went on trial in Stuttgart. It was Germany‘s first war crimes trial under the legislation incorporating the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. It ended in September 2015 with guilty verdicts but the presiding judge said that „mammoth trials“ like this were unmanageable under current procedure. What happened? And what is the nature of the FDLR war in the Congo? A seminal work for all those interested in contemporary African politics and history, particularly the Great Lakes region, in international humanitarian law and the prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Dominic Johnson Born in 1966, Africa Editor of the German taz newspaper since 1990 and its Foreign Editor since 2011. Simone Schlindwein Born in 1980, Central Africa correspondent of the German taz newspaper and based in Uganda since 2008. Bianca Schmolze Born in 1978, since 2003 she has worked for the Medical Aid Group for Refugees (MFH) in Bochum; from 2011 to 2015 she documented the court proceedings in Stuttgart for the MFH and taz newspaper.

Politics and Contemporary History

“That’s Turkey, anything is possible here.” This is the principle Jürgen Gottschlich, correspondent in Istanbul for more than twenty years now, has always followed in trying to better understand his host country. But even he, like most observers, was surprised by the failed coup in July 2016. Less surprising to him was the subsequent purging of Erdog˘an critics from the military, schools and universities, from administration and the media. After all, vicious domestic-policy struggles have long been a regular feature of the course the country has taken. Gottschlich expertly describes Erdog˘an’s bid for absolute power, the state’s increasing Islamic orientation, the conflict with the Kurdish minority, but also daily life in Turkey, its culture and its lifestyles.

Central America Portrait of a region

ITB Berlin Buch Award 2014: Die besondere ReiseführerReihe

RALF LEONHARD

Zentralamerika Porträt einer Region Ch. Links Verlag

The seven states of the isthmus connecting the continents of North and South America – Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, and Honduras – have a number of things in common: a Spanish-influenced, often bloody colonial history, an unfair distribution of wealth, fascinating landscapes, and a huge indigenous heritage. As uniform as these states may seem from a distance, the bigger the differences upon closer inspection. Ralf Leonhard explains why Costa Rica has developed into a model country in the region and a popular destination for nature lovers, or delves into the intricacies of indigenous heritage in different countries. The descendants of the Maya, for instance, live mostly in Guatemala, whereas El Salvador, the smallest country in the region, has only about two percent indigenous peoples, mostly Pipils. Ralf Leonhard even investigates the moneylaundering outfit in Panama.

Censorship in East Germany was abolished on December 1, 1989. This was the green light for Christoph Links, an employee at East German publishing house Aufbau Verlag at the time, to establish an independent non-fiction publishing company for politics and contemporary history. Since then he has brought out about 800 titles, his three-man staff has grown to twelve, while the subject matter of his books, invariably weighing in on current events, has likewise expanded. Literary journalism, country studies, self-help, historical travel guides, coffee-tables books with accompanying texts on distinctive locations in German history, books about German colonial history, also e-books can be found in his publisher’s catalog.
