Initiated schematic design concepts for design leads and implemented design intentions with other disciplines within the office. Occasionally I would work within studios for high profile projects where I had opportunities to follow projects from conception to construction. My role within a studio was to provide design feedback for technical leads and assist technical staff in completing construction drawings.
Worked closely with leadership on an addition for a school and renovations for a church. Provided design charrettes for clientele and assisted leadership with construction drawings.
As an office that specializes in detailing I had the opportunity to learn from very technically creative people and correspond with talented designers. I had the opportunity to provide code analysis presentations and assist with putting together detail sheets for several projects. Green Modern / September 2011 - September 2012 Project Lead Produced conceptual designs and construction drawings for two residential projects where sustainability was high priority. LOJO & University of Houston / May 2008 - August 2010 Researcher & Fabricator Assisted faculty in their research and production of sustainable building components for the Houston Sustainability Expo.

SLED HILL Lambeau Field is a legendarily brutal place to play football in the winter. It is commonly known as the “Frozen Tundra”. It is a source of pride for fans to endure sub-zero temperatures when most other northern teams have moved to heated indoor venues. As the centerpiece of a 10-acre park immediately adjacent to the stadium, it was essential to the design team that the concept for this unique building needed to be specific to the place. Envisioned as a piece of earth pushed upward on a crystalline block of permafrost ice, the Sledding Pavilion embodies the idea that inspired it. A challenge for any sports anchored development is generating activity year-around when there are not events to attract people. This is particularly tricky in harsh environments. “The Hill”, or sledding pavilion was designed to attract people throughout the year. In the winter people can slide down the 30% slope or go ice skating on the skating pond and trail that winds its way beneath the structure. In the warmer months the hill becomes an inclined lawn facing the stadium that can be used for concerts and recreation, and the skating area below becomes a public plaza. There is also a terrace at the top of the hill with a bar concealed by a folding wooden wall that opens to create a canopy. Throughout the year people can use the café on the ground level and the event space on the second floor. In addition to the location specific design parti, the building materials were also selected for their connection to the area. Local Fon du Lac stone cladding and indigenous white cedar were primary building materials. Rain screen cladding that evokes the memory of weathered wood siding from a cabin in the woods was also used to further reinforce the connection to nature that is so important to the region.

MIKVAH / GUEST HOUSE
Situated on the lot’s periphery this building corresponds to the existing house through the trees by mirroring a gabled roof. Taking a closer look this project demonstrates a dialogue that explores a delicate balance between domestication and sacred space. The overall form of the building is simple, where a gabled glass shape dedicated to leisure and entertainment separates services from sacred spaces. Homogeneous apertures reinforce the interior’s motives to simple binaries; ‘are gravel paths enough to denote entries, can a chimney supplement the reveal of other shapes within the interior?’

USTA PLAYER’S AREA We were asked to renovate areas that served player’s participating in the 2018 U.S. Open. This included a cafe, lobby, shared warm-up space, and locker rooms within the Louis Armstrong Stadium. During the discover process with the client we were able to quickly narrow in on the desired design with a multitude of diagrams and renders.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM The Green Bay Packers asked the office to submit a proposal for several of buildings within their development West of Lambeau Field. One of those buildings being the new location of the Green Bay Children’s Museum. The design’s material palette and form take on a sincerely playful take of the master plan’s guide lines for the titletown development. Visual connection from the children exhibits to the playgrounds and Lambeau Field were crucial to the client. The design addresses this contingency by shifting the skylights North and South in plan to allow this visual connection to take place.

MOROSS HOUSE The current owners plan to use the building as an art gallery and studio for their own work as well as an event space. The garden is planned as an integral part of the whole program and will be restored and improved.
The change of use of the building as well as the provision of exhibition spaces require a small addition to the building which will also offer a roof terrace for garden parties and other events. A new additional stair provides garden access and a second mean of egress, required for the second floor. The addition to the building is envisioned to be in harmonious composition with the historic building in its size, proportion, and materiality, while expressing a contemporary character to distinguish itself from the historic building.

In addition to the renovation of the Moross House, a garage with studio is planned for the south side of the property abutting Woodbridge St. Since the owners will need extra spaces for producing and photographing their art work, GENERAL NOTES EXTERIOR STAIR BOTTOM the garage and studio makes it possible to alter the OR @ EXISTING FOUNDATION historic Moross House with minimum invasiveness. The garage also functions as loading and staging area during events and for material necessary to produce the artwork. The studio above the garage is made of brick equal to the new addition and the historic structure, and is meant to be integral to the overall composition of buildings in character, proportion and dimensional relationships.

36 2014 l Thesis Advisor: Andrew Holder Critics: Robert Somol, John McMorrough, Monica Ponce de Leon, and Vivian Lee The demise of the Baroque, was brought on by the invasion of the Rococo. Mathematically balanced archetypes were progressively encrusted with gluttonous decorations. Systems were eventually overwhelmed, and no longer needed a structural or fabrication logic in order to underpin its existence. The real was suddenly activated by figures teeming with life. And, all of these figures seemed to have some edge, corner, or inbetween that engaged with a substance not quite ground, cloud, or drapery. To the contemporary observer of the 18th century all of this figuration and activity would have meant something. To us, it means nothing, but the sheer quantity of figures and activity suggests the possibility of a material culture where objects are up to something. They appear to possess an interior vitality that is separate from our own.
THE ASSUMPTION OF INTERIOR VITALITY
38
These illustrations aim to literalize meanings of the rocialle. In doing so, the gaze of the viewer investigates how objects such as Paul de Lamerie’s, Ewer and Giovanni Gattista Piazzetta’s heavenly populated cloud in The Assumption of Mary (1735) are ambivalent in regards to what they physically should be and what they are being read as. Paul de Lamerie’s ewer remains a ewer but still retains
its allegorical qualities because figures and textures that make up the handle achieve a playfulness by means of how one figure is suggested to meet another. The result is the warping of physics between one figure into another. One could elude that the top half of one beast actually slips into another reality beyond the vegetation but still remains a handle. Through adding hatches to the figures in these pieces, I learned that a seam that connects one figure to another does a lot of work for the part to whole relationship. Clusters of figures start to suggest one figure, while still retaining its many parts as individual figures – the seam helps establish ambivalence between part and whole. Other figures are brought to the foreground while others slip to the background. Some figures show up throughout other pieces and mediums like the cloak or cloud, which suggests rules for how a supporting character of the Rococo helps the viewer navigate through the allegory as well as how the seam moves back and forth from foreground to background, and around the edges of an object.

A VEIL FROM GOD. A SENSORIUM. A NAPKIN. How can a napkin reconstitute an exterior expression of affect, while creating a sensorium on the interior? This can be described by the preparation and eating routine of the ortolan dish. The ortolan is a greenish gray songbird— no larger than your thumb—that migrates through the Bordeaux Region of France, between the months of August and September, making for a small opportunity to trap the bird. After capture, the ortolan is blinded, stuck in a cage, and kept on a diet of millet and figs until it reaches two to four times its normal size. Then it is drowned in a snifter of Armagnac, plucked of its feathers, and in most cases, stripped of its feet. The ortolan lies in a ramekin that is placed in a preheated oven for five to six minutes. The ortolan is immediately served to the center of dining table where each guest picks and places an ortolan onto their plate.
To fully enjoy the ortolan dish, you must first drape a large, white cloth napkin over your head. Take the ortolan in your fingertips and disappear. The outside world dissipates to a white noise of wet chewing and slurps, as the people around you begin to revel in the chaos that is happening in their mouths. Underneath the hood your tongue is halfsinged. But, even when the back of your mouth is burning, taste buds you never knew you had begin to bloom. The trick is to breathe, creating a convection heat transfer between your mouth and nose. The napkin traps all the aromas and you are left with a mouth that is on high alert. Managing the bouquet of flavors exploding in your mouth is almost overwhelming. A weight of guilt accrues as you remind yourself of the innocent songbird that is now singing on the back of your tongue.
Previous & Next: Analysis of Ortolan Anatomy & Tasting Ritual - A. Bite head off with teeth, head will drop to plate. B. Fat juices run down throat C. Meat is extremely moist and hints of liquorice. D. Bones provide a slight crunch but have a texture resembling to roasted chestnuts. E. Lungs and Stomach are punctured which releases the Armagnac. Below: Image of eating ritual & Instruction on how to roast ortolan.
Le guide culinaire : aide-meniore de cuisine pratique / A. Escoffier The Ortolan is sufficient in itself and should be enjoyed as roast: This is a gastronomic truth long proclaimed. The elements which are given as auxiliaries, such as foie gras and truffles, it is rather harmful, because they remove its subtle aroma and mitigation if it is more pronounced itself. It may be then put a classified among the great dishes. Because its price is high, but it is not a true gourmet delicacy. Nevertheless, we must give some formulas concerning, recommending never reverse.
Ortolan in Banks - Stuff Ortolan with as big as a small amount of foie gras wrapped each in a square of cheesecloth and poach for 5-6 minutes in a very robust ramekin. Then draw each in a small box, the bottom will be lined with a finely diced foie gras and truffle; coat with aroma of very small game.

INSIDE OUT: DECEIVING LIBERTINE FIGURES This thesis is an attempt to explore how character moves concepts of type away from program, systematization, and function into processes that hinge on concepts of affect and sensation. The marriage of affect and sensation is inherent to architecture. Encapsulating their union would reveal the difference between feelings which are personal, emotions which are social, and affects which are prepersonal. Affects role helps determine the relationship our body has with the environments, and the subjective experiences with think we feel as affect dissipates into experience. This project draws on the ideas and roles that intertwine affect and sensation by perceiving their relationship as character and how that has effected architecture. Character’s relationship with architecture played an important part to Anthony Vidler’s critique of Jean-Jacques Lequeu and Sylvia Lavin’s critique of Quatremère de Quincy. These authors reveal how character in architecture was achieved when society succeeded in diminishing its subjugation to natural conditions, both morally and physically. For Quatremère, character in
the purest sense was parallel to—and only expressible by—an artificial language of architecture. Establishing a universally accepted idea that diminished the boundaries between Modern, Classical and Egyptian styles of architecture, which revealed a common denominator to each of these as the primitive hut. Leque’s self-portraits revealed his interpretations of anguish, sadness, and disgust from psychologically disturbed patients at a psych-ward. These studies reveal how features of the face can evoke an almost primal knowledge of what is internally happening to the patient being mimicked. Comparing the work of Vidler and Lavin, we can begin to give context to character and see how it relies on the individual and society’s recognition of affect and sensation.

Investigations of forms started with sewing panels of spandex to each other. This process allowed me to explore forms that were determined by several factors. First, the shape of the panels provided a point of reference in the overall form-finding process - changing the shape of the panels produced the most change in the overall demeanor of the figure. Second, exploring how taut or loose the sewing was during the manufacturing of these figures procured features that could reinforce the character that the figure. Lastly, cutting holes for potential apertures allowed each figure to posture differently even though they all originated from the same size, shape, and sewing technique. Above: Investigation of Panels and Seams - Diagrams notating how differences in sewing edges to an aperture produced drastic formal changes. Below: Panoramic Elevation

Taking inanimate objects (spandex and blue Barbie dolls) and animating them to become characters in the room with you, was the goal of these investigations into the ritual of eating the ortolan and studying the Rococo. From the individual figure, to it’s pairings that partially encompasses a human, to it’s cluster - the combination of multiple pairings. These piles of fabric and flesh are made to procure feelings aw and disgust. While eluding to the idea that something strange is going on inside there. While none of the human figures are touching each other as they jiggle the giant body pillows. The onlookers outside can only use their knowledge of how to read an image to be deceived by what this thing is pretending to be. With the introduction of the human figures to the project, investigating how the interior of these piles of fleshy fabrics created spaces was important. Not only did this introduce a third rectangular fabric panel to the investigations for form finding. The interior shapes had to adhered to human proportions, while not revealing too much information to the onlooker. Once the onlooker starts to imagine what the posture of the human figure can be on the inside the work of the cluster begins to dissipate. POST-AGRARIAN KNUCKLE 2010 l Advisor: Matthew Johnson The city of New Orleans’ earliest solution to many of its problems regarding raising water levels, and storm surges was an assortment of levees and dams dispensed throughout the city. The result has significantly altered the location of the mouth of the Mississippi River and narrowed the limits of the city to its confinement between the coast and the river. Besides the decreased value in land due to the fragmentation of neighborhoods plus the inability of the city to grow, there is another significant problem in terms of its territory. Striving to stay afloat within an increasingly competitive global economy the city has unintentionally removed the scarce land currently available by digging a network of channels leading out to the Gulf of Mexico. Salt water from the Gulf spreads through these channels and into the ecosystems surrounding New Orleans, ultimately, killing the vegetation that has been keeping water levels down.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s storm surge much of the wetlands East of New Orleans have been destroyed do to the spreading of hazardous chemicals by floods. The Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans & The Saint Bernard Parish Government drafted a proposal to present to The State of Louisiana called the Coastal Impact Assistance Program. The programs aim at decreasing water levels to create a buffer from future storm surges by restoring the wetlands with a cypress swamp. The proposed building engages these efforts through its claimed friction to the ground. This projects seeks to reclaim new territory within the unattained and underdeveloped swamp areas West of New Orleans, with an approach that’s un-abrasive to claiming land but contiguous in its relationship with it. Ultimately it tries to create a new building to ground typology that performs as a series of systems that aerates the toxic ground yet creates a form that is a nimble solution to how buildings can foster a soft infrastructure.

Natural phenomena are “known through quantifiable metrics as matters of fact that often do not disclose the biases and experiences lost in that translation. How might architecture represent an engagement with natural phenomena, provoking questions about what we think we know? On the Mauna Kea mountainside, natural elements (ground, clouds, alpine tree-line, and the horizon-line) act as objects, providing uniquely ideal conditions for observation. Experiences are activated with simulations of calibrated optics and perceptual displacements that play with naturally occurring phenomena, elevating an awareness about the subjectivities of data

The studio engaged in a series of design explorations with group and individual work. The first assignment was to meet in a field with a partner and record our findings from our experiences. The rules were to not use GPS but to meet the day before departure and discuss places to go and what interests we think we would like to record. From those records we individually modeled objects that would incorporate those findings. What we learned from this en devour was the legitimacy of place finding and that the even though the resolution of map making has been improving the resolution and accuracy of maps will still just be a projected realism. The park is designed to have a collection of perceptual engagements that take effect on half of Mauna Kea with the focal point of the park on level with the Alpine Forest on the North side of the island. The engagements of the park are meant to challenge the perceptual discrimination of the natural occurrences that happen on the island every day through out the year. The effect of the park starts to architecturally address issues of scale and the horizon line. The balloons in a field at the datum of the Alpine Forest recognize the ground because of where it starts but also address the ground as you look out toward the horizon because each balloon has a reflective belly that create a mirage as they seem to cluster together as you reach the focal point of the park. 2012 Advisor: Kathy Velikov Illinois’ workforce is depending on Chicago’s ability to create a more efficient turnover rate of returning skilled workers in the production of material fabrication. How might fundamental architectural forms that currently exist in Chicago engage in the economic growth? By extending University of Illinois Chicago’s campus to border Greek Town and by providing a universal space for production and education the city can have a new urban fabric that is flexible enough to adjust with economic growths and recessions.
