I dive year-round but this summer has been extraordinary as I managed to capture the first ever underwater footage of white beaked dolphins off the NE coast. These are a relatively safe species in conservation terms but we still know very little about their behaviour, breeding patterns and life expectancy so this research is absolutely vital. The grey seal is my main obsession. Over the last 13 years I’ve filmed the world’s largest archive of this amazing creature, usually via long, relatively shallow dives in the North Sea. To capture seal behaviour demands extreme patience, good buoyancy skills and a slow, deliberate approach to your diving. There is something truly special about spending time in the company of wildlife. When a 170kg grey seal swims over, grasps your hand with its front flipper and squeezes in response to your hold then there is a magical connection that makes time itself stop.
