WHY IS IT THAT DESIGNERS NEVER OUTLINE FONTS WHEN SENDING GRAPHICS TO GET PRINTED? Is it necessary to outline fonts when making PDF'S to send to a printer? The answer is NO! This is why designers never outline fonts when sending graphics to get printed. Let me explain: A publishing myth is that fonts have to be outlined, truth is you almost never have to outline fonts. Most print shops however will not accept your PDF files unless they are outlined. InDesign all ways embeds fonts in the PDF, but you can get around restrictions on sharing fonts with other people by converting texts to an outline. MC CUE'S REAL WORLD PRINT PRODUCTION BY PEACH PRINT PRESS, states that converting text to outlines does not sidestep the vendors provisions of their EUCA Many vendors prohibit converting text to outlines. The main reason's not to outline fonts are as follows: Outlining texts degrades text quality because glyphs are turned into normal graphics and lack intelligence that fonts have in printing text. Attributes are lost when you outline text. Why one may ask? Because they aren't part of the font rather the outlines are applied by InDesign. So what is better than outlining fonts? Use fonts that allow embedding and let InDesign embed the fonts, InDesign does this by default when you create a PDF file. The PDF file can be viewed in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat on either a Mac computer or Windows computer and just about any printer can print with the fonts intact.
