Matt Hatzke, a former professional soccer player with the San Jose Eathquakes, came out as gay in an Outsports essay on June 24.
“I am deeply sorry I didn’t address this earlier,” said Councilwoman Deneese Owen, sponsor of the measure that prohibits discrimination in employment, housing and business services based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Owen called on members of the Ohio General Assembly to act. Pete Buttigieg, the first-term mayor of South Bend, Ind, came out as gay in a June 16 commentary in his hometown South Bend Tribune. “It’s clear to me that at a moment like this, being more open about it could do some good,” he wrote. “For a local student struggling with her sexuality, it might be helpful for an openly gay mayor to send the message that her community will always have a place for her. And for a conservative resident from a different generation, whose unease with social change is partly rooted in the impression that he doesn’t know anyone gay, perhaps a familiar face can be a reminder that we’re all in this together as a community.”
About 80 people - nearly all supporters of the civil-rights measure - attended the Bexley City Council meeting. The Columbus suburb made national news in March when a local videographer told a lesbian couple that she didn’t offer services to same-sex couples. Next Door Stories owner Courtney Schmackers later cited “the biblical definition of marriage” as her reason. Council members rejected several proposed amendments to the ordinance that would have allowed business owners to cite religious beliefs as a reason to refuse service; that would have allowed landlords to reject anyone they dislike if they also live on the

Council President Richard Sharp, who proposed the amendments, abstained on the final vote for the ordinance. It was approved, 6-0. “I moved to Bexley … knowing it was a community of inclusion and diversity,” said Carol Fey, an openly gay attorney and former Bexley School Board member. Fey and other Bexley residents congratulated council members for taking a stand against anti-LGBT bias, but council members praised Jenn Moffitt and Jerra Knicely, the couple who shared their rejection by Schmackers on social media until local and national media picked up their story.

A majority of Bexley City Council members voted on June 22 to bar discrimination against LGBT people, and a near-majority shed tears while doing so.
The new law also bars discrimination based on race, gender, religion and other factors covered by state and federal law. Ohio and the federal government are silent on bias against LGBT people.
“If I have one regret it’s that I didn’t live my life and share the real me with my teammates when I had the chance,” wrote Hatzke, who played one year of Major League Soccer and left the sport because of the pressure he felt in the closet. In his essay, Hatzke described a 2008 victory celebration in Columbus after defeating the Crew. He snuck out and returned to his hotel, he said, after teammates kept pushing him to hit on various women.

by Orie Givens After torrential rain and a flooded park washed out Columbus Pride, critics took to social media to say the annual festival is also washed up. “Things need to change,” business owner Allen Geiner told Outlook. “Just not the entertainment, but the Pride festival itself. ... This year was more like a state fair than previous years.” Geiner started a Change.org petition after the June 19-20 festival that he said he hopes will bring change to 2016 Pride and beyond. Columbus needs better-known headliners, better food and a less business-oriented festival, he said. He also claimed that the lineup left drag queens high and dry. Stonewall Executive Director Karla Rothan acknowledged “growing pains” for the festival and parade, which drew an estimated 400,000 people in 2014 but was canceled into its second day this year when heavy rain began flooding Goodale Park. She also said there’s room for improvement at Columbus Pride, although she criticized the tactic of “badgering and bullying people on social media.” 12

“We have people that love the stuff we put on the stage, and we have people that don’t care for it at all,” said Rothan, who has worked with Pride for 18 years. Rothan and Geiner both said they’ve had discussions about the festival in the past, and Geiner was once a volunteer who wanted to try to bring larger acts. Now others are agreeing that the festival could use some new blood. The petition met its first goal of 200 signatures, and Geiner upped the goal to 500. Geiner drew comparisons to Pittsburgh Geiner Pride, which booked both Iggy Azalea (who withdrew after acknowledging offensive comments she once made on Twitter) and Nick Jonas as performers. “Other Prides (a lot smaller) have HUGE names, whilst we are stuck with runner-ups to TV singing contests or obscure nobodies as headliners when clearly they are not,” the petition read. “WE CAN DO BETTER.” Rothan said she’s not against the idea of bigger artists, but she said she thinks it’s more important to
have artists who are out and who are positive role models for the LGBT community.

On other national LGBT issues, Sittenfeld said he would vote to confirm only those nominees for any US Supreme Court vacancy who support civil rights and marriage equality. That’s an area where he and Strickland differ from Portman, who praised the court’s June 26 ruling for nationwide marriage equality but said he thinks the right should have been won at the ballot box. Sittenfeld also supports the Affordable Care Act, which ends practices once used to deny health care to transgender Americans and people living with HIV. “What has he offered that’s better?” the Democrat asked of Portman, who wants to repeal and withhold funding for portions of the health-care law. Sittenfeld is a Cincinnati native who graduated from Seven Hills School and Princeton University.

YELLOW SPRINGS PRIDE June 27 Yellow Springs (population 3,487) is the smallest community in Ohio to host its own Pride celebration. But it should come as no surprise. The village has prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation since 1979 and it has been known as a welcoming community for even longer.

Jim Obergefell’s name was on the case, but he wasn’t the only Ohioan fighting in court for marriage equality. Others joined his case seeking state recognition of legal, same-sex marriages on Ohio death certificates, and a second case filed in 2014 sought state recognition of legal, same-sex marriages on Ohio birth certificates. In all, 11 Ohioans, two New Yorkers, one adoption agency, six Cincinnati attorneys and six lawyers affiliated with national civil-rights groups argued our case for marriage equality during the two-year battle from United States v. Windsor to Obergefell v. Hodges and Henry v. Hodges.

Why do black gay men hide openly within the church walls and hate themselves for being gay, or black, or displaced? I was surprised that someone of this mindset would actually be one of my party guests. Long story short, one of the men spoke and revealed his self-hatred. And then the learning began. The man sharing my seat (who had just minutes before broken one of my kitchen chairs with no apology) said, “All I know is... all I know is, I want to be on the right side when the time comes.” Then to my gasp of disgust, he continued, “And that right side is with Jesus.”

I’m still thinking about it. So many questions
in my spirituality, all of the “books” they teach from tell you to love all, as the son of God loved you; do not judge, as only the most high can judge; do not lie and deceive. Our fight as LGBT people is hard enough. We are fighting employers, family members, church members, church leaders, state laws, federal laws, gay-bashers. Do we really have enough energy left over to fight other LGBT people and, worse, ourselves? I plead to my black gay readers: Please work on getting yourself to a safe place when it comes to employment, housing and education. Then use the rest of your energy in loving yourself. Loving all of the wonderful things you bring to the table. Loving the fact that you can cohabit with another male and cook meals for each other, keep a home, raise children (straight children at that!) and not project hate on each other and yourself. We teach people how to love us, befriend us, grow with us and accept us. Acceptance.

good things. When you are feeling grateful for the sunshine, you feel it more intensely than if you take it for granted. Gratitude also has significant impact on our brain chemistry. When we experience gratitude, our brains release a rush of dopamine that makes us feel great. The key to practicing gratitude is to do it intentionally. One of the easiest ways to do this is to keep a gratitude journal and write in it one to three times a week. Don’t just do this in your head - write it out. Be specific about what you are grateful for and describe it in detail. It’s also good to acknowledge the giver, whether it’s nature or a supernatural being, or a person or animal. Try this for three months and see what happens.

She Embraces Fashion and Music,

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7 runner-up Pearl has embarked on a drag race of her own across the world. She has released her first album, Pleasure, a 15-track EDM album that hit the Top 3 on the iTunes dance chart, and a music video for her first single, “Love Slave.” Pearl also is trying to make a name in the fashion industry. She collaborated with Artists at Wilhelmina on “The Transformation of Pearl,” where she portrayed looks from different fashion icons. And she has a unisex fragrance coming out in July called, “Flazéda,” after a catchphrase she coined on Drag Race. Despite all of this, Pearl somehow still manages to tour, making stops in her hometown of Chicago and cities in Australia. Fans in Ohio can see her when she performs in Columbus on Saturday, July 4. Nathan Cole: Congratulations on all of your success post-RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 7. How was returning to Chicago after Drag Race? Pearl: Chicago always welcomes me back with open arms. No Crown, But More Options for ‘RPDR’ Fan Favorite

One of the breakout stars of the latest cycle of RuPaul’s Drag Race is the awesomely talented, Florida-born Ginger Minj. Minj, who performed in June at Dayton Pride, is returning to Ohio this month with her musical, Crossdresser for Christ. She’ll perform in Cleveland on Thursday, July 9. She’ll also do a drag show in Columbus on Thursday, July 2. We talked with her over the phone to discuss RPDR Season 7, losing to Violet Chachki but winning at life, and why everyone should love their inner toad. Orie Givens: You’re coming to Cleveland to perform and we want to talk about that, but we just saw the finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race; and, sadly, you didn’t win - but you were the fan favorite - what happened? Ginger Minj: Well, who wants to be Fantasia Barrino when you can be Jennifer Hudson?
OG: Right? So you talked about your Southern Baptist background and transition to your tour, Crossdressers for Christ, that’s bringing you to Cleveland on July 9. Give us the full T! GM: The entire premise of the show is the fact that I can’t afford therapy so I’m gonna have other people pay me to talk about my problems. But I’m [going to] set them to music so it’s nice and they get their money’s worth. It’s my life story, from the time I was born to the time I started doing drag. And it’s how I reconciled that religious upbringing with the terrible choices I make on a daily basis.

OG: Hello, goodbye. GM: I ain’t worried about it, baby! Because if I had won, I would have gotten stuck in a certain box and I would have had to do the same thing over and over for years. But having the notoriety of being in the top three, I don’t have those ties, I can knock down the doors and do whatever I fuckin’ want to do. OG: You grew up in Florida, and it’s similar to Ohio where parts may be better than others. What do you think it would have been like to see someone on TV who was gay; how would that have affected the young Ginger? GM: I did have that in a sense. You know, I was from Leesburg, Fla, which is about an hour north of Orlando. And it’s a different world away; it is so country. Everything is Southern Baptist. Everything is very straight, Republican redneck. And it was hard for me outlookohio.com
growing up, until I discovered the joy of John Waters and Harvey Fierstein and Divine. ... You know, my Drag Race was watching Polyester, Pink Flamingos and Torch Song Trilogy. It’s those three movies that not only shaped my life but gave me life, gave me my life.
OG: You’ve also got a song out - “Ooh La La” - and it’s fierce. It sounds a lot different than what you normally hear from queens, you know the big dance tracks. ... This is a little edgy, a little rocky. Tell us about it... GM: First of all, if you’ve seen the show you know I’m not a dancer, so I’m not gonna put out a fucking dance song. [Laughs.] Second of all, I’m a singer; I’ve sung my whole life. I wanted [“Ooh La La”] to be one that I was really proud of, that spoke to not only who I am as an entertainer but who I am as a person. And, I wanted to write a song that was kind of an anthem for everybody. ... I think that we got a really good shot of getting it to radio and making it a big hit. OG: “Ooh La La” is a great song. Are there going to be more? Is there going to be an album? GM: There is an album on the way, but just like the song, I’m not rushing to release it just for the sake of releasing it. I want to make sure that it’s perfect. There’s songs on there that they could be an Adele song; I’ve got some Amy Winehouse-inspired stuff, I’ve got some Meatball-inspired stuff.

OG: One more thing, what would you say to the kids watching who need to feel more confident like Ginger? GM: Just realize that there’s nothing wrong with you; you’re perfectly fine. You’re perfectly willing and capable and wonderful to be a decent human being. Just how you are. And take it from the glamour-toad herself, you gotta love yourself - warts and all, or you’re never gonna be happy.
