Selected for permanent exhibition at the Walltown Crags on Hadrian’s Wall

THE SITE

The Caledonian Culture Centre is located at the Walltown Crags, set within the isolated landscape of Northumberland. The site is home to Hadrian’s Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage site constructed by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago. Along the length of the wall there are numerous museums dedicated to the history of the Romans and their lives along the wall. However, there are none aimed specifically at the people of Caledonia, a civilisation that the great Roman Empire never truly conquered.

THE SCHEME

The scheme is designed so that it coheres with the unique landscape it is situated within, whilstpromoting the heritage and craft of the Caledonian Peoples. A range of activities will be offered to bring a variety of people from different occupations to the site. From school trips and family visits, to hikers and local artists the centre willunite them in one place.

THE ACTIVITIES THE EXHIBITION

There is a permanent exhibition introducing visitors to the daily lives of the Caledonians as well as specific artefacts that indicate high levels of culture.

THE WORKSHOP

A Bronze Age Workshop will be a key attraction to the centre, educating visitors on how the use of this metallic alloy advanced the civilisation. Local artists will be invited to craft Bronze sculptures to be placed around the Walltown Crags; visitors will be able to use the workshop to craft their very own Bronze artefacts.

THE JOURNEYS

The site offers a variety of scenic walks , with the Pennine Way and Hadrian’s Wall Walk passing through the site, the new scheme will enhance these routes with sculptural elements, highlighting the history, geology and nature of the area.

Emergence

Investigations into an architectural form that rises out of the landscape like the small whinstone exposures. This concept is used to link various areas of the scheme together as well as giving a sense that the buildings are emerging from the ground

Fracture

The emerging building form is fractured, creating a route through the centre. This route gives visitors a sense of being within the building without having to enter or interrupt their walk.

The exhibition will give visitors an insight into the daily lives of the Caledonians and give their interpretations of what life would have been like for them to have been invaded by the Romans. This will be shown through a variety of displays ranging from model homes and farms, to archaeological finds of intricate bronze and other metalwork. These findings of complex metallurgy and jewellery are incredibly valuable pieces of evidence that the Caledonians had a level of culture far beyond their depictions as barbarians. The final part of the exhibition will display the rise of the Picts, the highly cultured society of Caledonians born out of Roman occupation, and the intricate stone carvings. Exhibits will be contained in glass cabinets and will either be suspended by thin steel cables or projected from a base to give the illusion that they are floating. Lighting will be provided from above, illuminating the exhibits.

Exhibition

The crushed whinstone pathway leads to the first entrance, a junction in the route between the buildings. Small glimpses of the displays of the Caledonian history are visible, embracing a curiosity to enter the exhibition.

Work

The Bronze Craft Workshop invites visitors and local artists to use the facilities to raise awareness to the history of the area. Artists will be commissioned to construct pieces that will enhance the routes around the site, while visitors can create their own art or jewellery amongst other artefacts.

Reflect

The Cafeteria offers visitors a place to relax, rest and reflect on the activities they have performed around the site, whether it is a 10 mile trek along the Hadrians Wall Path, or a long day forging their own sword in the Bronze Craft Workshop.

Memory

The walking routes around the site will be enhanced via an extending platform, protruding out across a quarried area of the Whin Sill on which Hadrians Wall used to rest. Etched into glass will be a visualisation of the wall and where it used to be.

BYKER COMMUNITY HUB THE SCHEME

NETTA/TRADA Prize for Innovation with Timber – 2nd Place

The Byker Community Hub will be a new facility open for people of Byker Wall and the surrounding areas. The aim of scheme is to increase the number of people getting into work by offering Educational and Advice services for the Community. An added dimension to the scheme focusses on the social aspect of the community, by hosting small community business markets, regular showings of local sporting events on screen, and cafeteria. All of which are hosted in an adaptable community zone. The materials used predominantly throughout the building are exposed red brick and timber. From a desire to reuse the existing brick on the site, a glulam framework was chosen to support the weight of the brick. Through the development of the scheme, the brickwork became solely internal and the glulam framework came to support SIPs; chosen for their ease of installation on site.

Initial

The building was designed with an intention to focus on the view from the site, looking down the Tyne River as it carves a path between Newcastle and Gateshead. An external courtyard area, doubling up as a children’s playground overlooks this view, which itself is embraced by the timber framed building.

THE PRODUCTIVE GARDEN THE SCHEME

YEAR2

The Walled Garden at Seaton Delaval Hall was originally created to grow fruit and vegetables for the estate as well as having its own brewery on site. Over its 200 year existance it has been adapted and changed to whatever it need to be and the brewery lost. Due to the age of the site, the walls have bowed and twisted with their own weight and subsidance. Impact is a Cor Ten clad Brewhouse signaling the return of the Brewery to Seaton Delaval. The form is modelled from a cube being thrown into the walled garden, sending ripples through the ground forming the land around it.

Section

The scheme itself houses a brewery with an exhibition on the brewing process and a shop.

HABERDASHERY ON PINK LANE YEAR1

Concept

THE SCHEME The Haberdashery is a small scale shop located on Pink Lane. The geometric concept was derived from research into the Canterbury tales, where a Haberdasher set a challenge to divide an equilateral triangle into four segments and have them form a square. The problem is solved using geometry, the answer was manipulated to form the freestanding Kiosk, which is opened up during the day and closes up during the night. The Haberdashery’s main selling items are Wool for knitting and fabric.
