thesis
in my thesis, i am exploring semi subterranean architecture through the function of a short stay bath house. the location is in southwest virginia on the new river at a location known as the palisades. part of the building is above ground, but most of it is beneath. some of the builidng sticks out over the edge of the cliff
blacksburg hotel
the site is downtown blacksburg off of main street. the program called for 18 guest rooms and a guest suite. the first level features the back of the house and guest amenities. the second through fifth floors are for guests. each room has built in shelving under the window and a walk in shower. the penthouse has its own private kitchen, common space, master bedroom, and outdoor patio.
blacksburg townhomes
this project called for a cluster of three story apartments in blacksburg in a plot of land off of clay street. the scheme generated from the image of a lantern. the first and third floor functions are closed off due to the nature of their functions. the second floor is open to the world.
z-plot
this project called for two programs: an architecture firm and a residence for the principal. the site is located in wilmington, north carolina. the scheme separates the firm and townhouse physically and poetically; in that the openness of the firm contrasts with the closed nature of the residence.
an artist’s studio
this project called for a studio designed for a painter. the site consisted of built conditions: three columns along the east wall and an eastern wall. the studio was only to be designed with concrete block and wood. a site wall was also to be considered in the design process.
make a hole in a cube
the project asked for a hole to be made inside of a cube. the nine inch cube was to be made from layers and assembled revealing the hole. the intersection of two cones through a cube and thus removed create the void within the solid
3 elements
the project asked to pick three architectural elements and arrange them. i chose foundation, wall, and stair. foundation was a constant for all. the wall is constructed of wooden posts spaced specifically to allow permeability of all forces but does not allow passage. the spiral stair poses a softening quality against the rigidness of the enclosure.
