Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre

May 30, 2015 Board of Directors New Marine Centre Society 9811 Seaport Place Sidney, British Columbia V8L 4X3 Canada Dear Board of Directors, It is with great pleasure that I submit my application for the Executive Directorship of the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. With over two decades of International experience in public aquarium facilities and a renewed dedication to ensuring the Best Aquarium in the World is the WILD , I am excited at the development challenges facing the Centre. It is known that the Aquarium needs some serious revitalization of funds for its expenditures and visions of excellence of quality and care to occur. With society and technology crossing paths so quickly and easily the massive draw of large aquarium tanks of the past can be limited to the draw of a select few. Furthermore the maintenance and upkeep and renewal of tanks, glass, water, equipment, pumps, valves and general paint and concrete renewal makes the task of revitalization seem as difficult as its inception. But the truth is that yourselves and others made a dedicated decision to give back to the people of Vancouver Island through a public display aquarium. You have done a great job introducing an army of dedicated volunteers, a world class educational facility for the Community and a glimpse into the wonders of the Salish Sea for the hundreds of thousands that visit Vancouver Island. As the transition occurs in society trends towards captivity, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Aquarium has an opportunity to put itself in an unique position of change and revitalization. Building upon the Aquariums Mission to bring people Face-toFace with the animals of the Salish Sea, I propose a vision and a plan that uses technology to enhance the depth and field of vision past the current aquarium walls. Whilst keeping some current live exhibits an analysis of some of the other tanks vitalization would be reviewed in an audit of visitor engagement and satisfaction.
Reducing the operational costs of some expensive non-engaging exhibits and replacing them with modern technological advancing science of the deep sea will create an Aquanaut atmosphere for the Aquarium. Going beyond the large fish tanks to a window of the depths of the Ocean. Voyager ROV programs, Deep Sea Hydrophones, Real life camera patrols of the Salish Sea, Otter Proof Orca Selfies etc. Enhancing the utilization of the Salish Sea through technology and the engagement of selected live animal transition displays would create a dynamic and ever changing atmosphere for guests, members and education groups. This facilitates reducing operational costs whilst increasing demand of visitors to see the changes as they develop at the Centre. Without large draw animals or huge capital funds for expansion, any visitor-facing cultural attraction would face equally difficult financial times. I agree that a strength in Fundraising is imperative. I also believe that an Executive Director that can increase the current revenue streams whilst reducing direct physical equipment operational costs can produce a more effective visitor-ship model. Increasing revenues from existing displays allows a new enhanced concentrated exhibit restructure program to occur, targeted specifically to the needs as expressed by guest interaction statistics. Future fundraising efforts could be for direct increased scientific equipment to attain the knowledge needed for the improvement of the wild conservation tasks set forth by the Board. I look forward to explaining this process, the motive behind it as well as the metrics behind it all. I am certain that this model of future development and focus for the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre would benefit the Board of the New Marine Centre Society. Through direct effective communication of growth and new opportunities to ensure that the Salish Sea remains the Best Aquarium in the World! To The future of Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre Sincerely yours,
Christopher Porter
Applicant Questionnaire Name: Christopher Porter - (chris@Wildvision.ca) Why are you interested in this position? The Salish Sea is one of the richest areas of the world I have lived in. Culturally, historically, financially and environmentally we are blessed, yet our marine life continues to face direct threats. As an ocean side community Sidney has a chance to be Canada’s gateway, increasing guests love for the ocean through innovative aquarium opportunities inside and out. I want to be part of that TEAM MAKING that possible.
Outline your experience in fundraising and give an example a major gift you have secured. Recognizing that a successful environmental campaign includes financial sustainability, innovative revenue generating opportunities for the direct funding of aquarium operations would be my primary focus. As somebody who has created some of the world’s most unique aquarium guest programs, I am excited about the prospect and opportunity to increase those operational requirements. This would allow fundraising tasks to be focussed on new capital and environmental projects that further enhance the development of the Centre as a leader for Salish Sea Conservation. Enhancing the reach of fundraising opportunities to development projects that create additional revenue generating “streams” allows us to think outside the tanks and produce an engaged community. Dr. Murray Newman, founder of Vancouver Public Aquarium, shares in his books that the success of Vancouver was an engaged and involved community. It became the City’s Aquarium, not one’s legal entity. Creating an authoriatiative position in the conservation threats facing the Salish Sea will ensure a strong community position by the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. Any additional benefit that SHAW acquires through a further engaged community is of great benefit. Opening up some incredible media awards, scholarships and initiatives that reward innovative technological advances in marine education. A win win for all involved, most importantly the Salish Sea and its iconic species such as the Orcas.
What do you think are the most important attributes of a successful Executive Director? Passion for the MISSION and TEAM , accountability to the BOARD and CITY, direct availability and engagement with the MEDIA and COMMUNITY. Passion, accountability and availability to engage that is what I feel is important in an Executive Director. I look at every position within an organization as a mandatory component for a successful operation. Not one position is more or less important. An Executive Director is like a Coach that looks at all the scenarios, threats and/or opportunities face the organization. To help make those decisions an Executive Director needs leadership and goals set by its Board and a team of specialists and experts to explore the most efficient and effective method to accomplish those goals with the resources available to the team. Throughout it all an Executive Director must 24/7 be ready to stand accountable and available to be engaged by the general public, team members, authorities and of course the Board. As I learned in a wise video shared with me by past Board member Dr. John Harper, “ sometimes people are not asking the right people the right questions.” I ensure that I never stop asking questions and hope that those around me do as well to ensure that the best answer is the goal of the task not whose answer it was.
This organization is lean and this position requires someone with flexibility and adaptability. Give an example of how you have handled a situation where a major shift in focus was required at short notice. Lean, flexible and adaptable… must be an aquarium. Marine life is so diverse and fragile that in the public aquarium world visions and dreams sometimes get flooded with reality. One of the rawest forms of focus I had to adapt to was in the South Pacific in a remote village that hunted and killed dolphins to use the teeth and meat for trade for garden and water rights. Sitting down with the villagers, I had to convince them the benefits of keeping the animals alive instead of killing them. One particular animal needed medical attention and after 20 minutes of explanation a group of hunters spent the next few days collecting fish to feed it and spent hours observing it. Throughout this process I saw the joy of knowledge spread throughout the entire village that these animals not only were food and currency to them, but in fact were intelligent and directly interact with them. This occurred based myself and the villagers wiling to be open to a shift of focus. Sometimes making the decision to shift is based on emotion not practical solutions. Emotion is important to check your decision but in the end we must ensure that both sides of the equation are open to being flexible. This can and will occur as I learned in the South Pacific. The key is open communication with all stakeholders. Ensuring that decisions are made with as much input from the team as possible and the Executive Director continually measuring the effectiveness of the efforts through easily understood and measurable metrics.
How would you describe your leadership style? What would others say about you as a leader? As somebody who has had direct experience working and living with head hunters (real and corporate) , I like to lead by ensuring the team understands the WHY, WHAT and HOW of every situation. Furthermore that they have had an opportunity to contribute directly on what the definition of those are. TEAM CONSENSUS takes a little longer, but it ensures that everybody is participating 100% on the agreed upon tasks needed to accomplish the goals set. Taking a little extra time to ensure that everybody’s opinion and thoughts are understood and adapted when allowable ensures a team to share in the credit and comfort in the defeat. But no matter what the ability for a team to quickly regroup and adapt to every changing needs and focuses ensures that the Goal and Mission to get as many people Face-to-Face with the Salish Sea Environment.
What is your salary expectation for this position? As per analysis of Pay Scales for such positions in Canada the range is $39,597-$98,211

Developing/executing fundraising plans to generate grants and other donations
Experience
Education/Training
10 years working through extensive government authorities around the world including CITES of Switzerland. This has taught me to accept that grants, donations, fundraisers are dealt best through the execution of the existing bureaucratic process. A process that has a path no matter how complex it may be. What is most important is to have some measurability on how much closer you are to your goal as outlined by all.
Taught by some of the most game changing mentors in the world. From Canadian Dutch in Cuaraco to Dr. Murray Newman to Angus Matthews. Interviewing with the Cousteaus and learning the fun of the wild from Dr. Ken Balcomb. Exciting and diverse people that all bring their Face-to-Face encounters of the Salish Sea in different ways. In order to preserve it we must protect it. In order to protect it we must participate in protecting it.
Business Administration Managing the financial aspects of 15 years of my life has been directly involved in when I was young at the business; developing budgets, the senior management Camosun College. Audited analysis, risk management capacity. From Founder to Executive Director to Sea-E-O. From daily budgets to contracts worth hundreds of millions dependent on the legal paperwork to pass the scrutiny of the world authorities. I take matters seriously to ensure that all aspects of the equation are measureable‌ the Social, Financial and the Environmental factors.
one of BC’s Premiere Resort destinations upto $50k per day. Being able to track down a discrepancy in a 2 Beer transaction takes an intuitive understanding that the numbers are based on a logical pattern no matter how complex it appears. I have also had been fortunate to have been mentored by some of the largest firms in Canada and the world like KPMG.
Developing /executing marketing Metrics of interaction Some base courses in and sales are a forte of marketing at Camosun plans to enhance revenues and grow attendance or increase sales mine. From small kids College and than a life of toys CoinGlobs to Animal Encounter programs featuring feeding sharks. I enjoy creating programs that spark interest above the ordinary. In the mid 2000’s I was the first to introduce trained sea lions that would free swim with divers in the open ocean environment. Creating wild encounters with wild animals that were conditioned to live in direct contact with the peoples that adore them. From Sealions in Open Seas to Animal Encounters to OceanWalls. My projects have been featured in a countless amount of media publicity locally and in the International Market including CNN and PrimeTime Live with Chris Cuomo .
measuring effectiveness of campaigns with direct metrics. I have always been fascinated with numbers and when training animals you need to know the best way to measure progress. A wild animal does not tame in seconds. The seconds build unto minutes and you have to take the time to record that. I have measured a wide range of social media campaigns in order to understand better market penetration. In fact most public marketing ad campaigns generate a very small 2-4% of direct interaction. With a conversion rate of less than 6%. So that means from the 70,000 plus annual attendees to the Centre you could expect 170 plus additional opportunities for program revenue streams.
Delivering a high quality visitor experience or education programs
My entire 25 year career has been dedicated to creating worldclass “ E D U TA I N I N G ” programs. Many of them continuing to receive Int’l attention and recognition.
I was fortunate to work with some of the founders of public education of the ocean environment. Such as Bob Wright, Al Bolz, Steve Huxter, Jeremy FitzGibbons, Clint Wright, Bruce Stephens and more.
Communications, including PR and media
I have been featured in a number of documentaries and television appearnaces. From small local social media productions to full scale CNN Documentaries.
Was approached a decade ago by a local documentarian to follow my work. Many media appearances and stories later has led to many hands-on direct experiential education.
Human resources, staff and/or volunteer management
Any active member in Senior Management needs to have a good relationship with their staff and volunteers. They are the energy and the quality reflection of your guidance and counsel. In Italy I consulted their entire management on new program development, in the South Pacific I employed 40 directly and over 800 indirectly through fish programs. I have also operated a political party and led Federal Campaigns in large urban centers such as Toronto’s Danforth.
Fortunately I started working with managers that had solid experiences shared in operational manuals. This would allow me to study on my own pace while reflecting under their guidance in real life situations. The Aquatic world can be an ever changing environment. From disruptions in pumps and water quality issues to visiting dignitaries that want a behind the scenes tour of the leaking main exhibit. The reality is that procedures anticipated to be the solutions for potential problems is key.
Cultural attractions experience: aquarium, hospitality, museum, environmental, arts or similar
*Christ Church Alert Bay BC *Sealand of the Pacific Victoria BC *Vancouver Aquarium Vancouver BC *Kalyspo Cruise Corfu, Greece * Acquario di Genova, Genova Italy * Solomon Islands Ed Centre - South Pacific * Curacao Aquarum Dutch Antilles
Direct hands-on experience led me to a career in consulting for public display facilities featuring marine animals. Developing guest interaction programs as well as sourcing and preparing the logistics related to large valued animals transfers. Working continuously in partnership with Governments, Contractors, Traditional Land Owners and all other stake holders.
Facilities management: life support, building maintenance, IT systems
From Sealand of the Pacific’s simple semiopen system to Acquario Di Genova’s hi-tech pressured sand and UV Ozone systems, I have studied and required to learn the basic operations to ensure optimal animal safety and guest satisfaction.
Direct hands-on experiences with contractors, engineers and maintenance supervisors. Fu ll ma in t e n a n ce a n d operational protocols are essential for the safety and well being of the living organisms. Constant monitoring to find variants creates safe systems.
Experience working with a notfor-profit board
Volunteering for a wide variety of Society’s such as Mt. Doug PAC and Red Cross as well as International Roles in Scientific development programs has led me to encounters working with a Board of authority. In general I find the best way to liaison is to ensure that open communication exists and is constantly measured in an agreed fashion. Trust but verify is a key slogan that I refer to staff. I can trust that Board believes I am doing the best job, but unless I can prove it with direct verification that can be scientifically measured than the results are simply ambitious. For the well being of the oceans and the longevity of the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre stats of success need to be done effectively.
Living with traditional landowners and working with the utilization of a cultural natural resource taught me a lot about working with a Board. In the South Pacific a village operates with consensus. This means that every person has an equal say. So when somebody has an objection, the entire meeting stops and it is a d d r e s s e d . Wi t h o u t a decision to move forward until the matter is resolved. At first I found this frustrating and than I learned the value of such an open form of communication. One that I would bring directly with the Board of the New Marine Centre Society. Bringing consensus of senior staff, public and volunteers to the table allows the organization to have additional views and opinions ensuring that the results of its decisions are measured effectively.
Commitment to science, education and conservation learning outcomes
1000%! My passion for saving the Oceans is known by many. More importantly it is transferred in our discussions. This brings an element of adventure and excitement to the task at hand. Making it fun is my other passion to ensure that the Oceans actually do get saved by the public. They should be inspired not only to observe but to participate in the c on s e r v a t i on of t h e oceans.
I have been fortunate to have an incredible life of research, science, entertainment with the marine environment. It has never been on a formal education level. Though I have spent many times working with Doctorates, Thesists and Researchers my strengths have always been based more on the operational kind and not the scientific kind. That said I have always learned that there is always some great ones that you can team up with to help you!

MY PRESENT ENSURING THE OCEAN BECOMES THE BEST AQUARIUM IN THE WORLD In 2010, after Tilikum a Whale I trained at Sealand of the Pacific killed his third person, I had to re-evaluate the benefit of the captivity of marine mammals. Somehow a belief developed that the release of these animals in the future would be impossible. More than 30 years ago Angus Matthews, one of the Aquarium Founders, first proposed a public display program that involved the return of the displayed animal back to its natural habitat. To imagine what our own resident killer whale population would look like now if we had continued on that direction sparks hope. The innovative work that the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre does with their octopus and other animals is a sign that Cast of CNN’s Blackfish the Movie
aquariums can engage both inside and outside the tanks!
November of 2014 I launched an innovative whale size HD Interactive display in partnership with Hillside Centre. Utilizing partnerships with over 50 non-profits, researchers and ocean enthusiasts we created an unbelievable ever changing window into the surrounding Pacific waters. From three miles deep via Ocean Networks Canada to live sea lions fishing in the herring run of Haida

Gwai via PacificWild.org cameras. Since its opening, it has had over 1.5 million shopper views and over 121,000 people directly interact with the exhibit. With average interaction times surpassing traditional standard fish aquarium displays. Additional software featuring direct live interaction with the ocean environment in a game type atmosphere will further engage the kids Sea Rangers program.

THE FUTURE WITH OCEAN DISCOVERY Increase of Face-to-Face Encounters Utilizing Technology Limiting operational costs and providing new interaction encounters for any public display exhibit is essential. The multiple tank set-up of the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre is based on an older 2009 design of multi-species specific style exhibits. While most public aquariums have themes, in general, additional revenues and increase of attendance numbers occur with the introduction of brand new exhibits, new species and/or babies of popular species. Monterey Bay Aquarium has proven to be a leader in its ability to surpass guest expectations by integrating the direct ocean with its exhibits. This allows them to be a leading conservation and technical source for the region and the world while at the same time increasing attendance numbers. Similar models of integrated direct ocean encounters would be my first focus as Executive Director. The direct operational costs of some current exhibits could outweigh their guest benefit. Analyzing the data on the average time a visitor spends in the current visit model would show which exhibits guests tend to prefer and overall the direct per guest time interaction versus the cost of such exhibit. Transitioning as a leader in technical advances of public interaction entices the visitor to come and explore more than a few large fish tanks. It allows the guests to have direct technological interactive opportunities with the ever-changing Salish Sea environment. By focussing on a few amazing live tanks and an ever changing technological view of the wild, new forecasting models can be created for the centre to increase profitability and thus sustainability. This focus in an area of such Technological Advance in Victoria would create a new exciting chapter in the Centre’s development and thus open new avenues of sponsorship and funding opportunities from the corporate and government level.
METRICS: Measuring effectiveness of resources is by far the most paramount importance for any visitor-facing cultural attraction. Too often education and awareness cannot be quantified directly outside the walls of the tanks. Creating measurable impact markers ensures that the entire team can agree on the effectiveness of the work. Staff, Volunteer and the Board can all agree on and rate the effectiveness of the execution of agreed goals and mandates. Continuously ensuring the mission of bringing people face-to-face with the marine life of the Salish Sea* ( *reference Mission of Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre as per OceanDisocvery.ca )

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES FROM THE MATRIX OF THE OCEAN TO THE OCEAN OF THE MATRIX With decades diving around the world in a number of settings including floating whale pens, fish collection excursions, my diverse experience in the ocean environment allows me to enjoy my dream of being a real life Aquaman. Understanding the systems and hazards associated with replicating the ocean is paramount to ensure the safety of the collection, staff, volunteers and the general public. I have been fortunate to have had direct work experiences with the technological advances and maintenance operations in some of the world’s largest public aquarium displays in the world. Ever since I was young I have had a fascination with technology. I type more than 50 words a minute. I also have extensive coding and development experience on a number of software platforms including to but not limiting to data bases, servers, website development, social media integrations, Near Field Communications and other variances incorporating technological components. Direct experience in graphic and marketing including video editing and stream casting. People politics solve purposeful problems through practical patience. The key to any solution is to ensure that all stakeholders have an equal opportunity to share and express their concern, advice and feedback. This is paramount for the success of Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre. My unique International experience directly working with remote Anglican Ministers to Prime Minsters of Nations, allows me to be goal oriented through patient execution of team agreed solutions. Working directly with corporate and real head hunters has given me an advantage in creating consensus initiatives. This approach is paramount to ensure the goals of sustainability are executed for the betterment of the longevity and growth of the Centre.
