he Best of Springfield magazine – now in its fifth year – is a showcase of everything that makes our community great. Dining, entertainment, recreation, quality of life…it’s all here! This year we expanded to 40 different “Best Of Springfield” categories covering a wide range of businesses and industries. If the online voting is any indication, we’ll add even more categories next year. More than 3500 ballots were cast naming hundreds of different local businesses as your favorite in the various categories. The open-ended nature of the voting allowed voters to “write in” their winner with the only limitation being that the business is located in Clark County. Voting in many of the categories was very tight with some of the winners overtaking their competition in the final days of voting. In each category you will see one winner – “The Best of the Best” – along with the second and third place finishers. The winners will receive a special framed plaque designating them as “The Best of the Best 2019”, and window clings announcing the designation to their clients and customers. This contest would not have been possible without you, the voters. Thank you for sharing your opinion on what makes Springfield great. And to the winners, congratulations on your achievement and we hope you wear your new title proudly! We would like to thank our sponsors who help make this a great community event: Our Presenting Sponsor, Clark, Schaefer Hackett - Our Awards Sponsor, Mercy Health - and our Premier Sponsor, Security National Bank.

SPRINGFIELD EATS

FROM PIZZA AND CHEAP EATS, TO FINE DINING AND SWEET TREATS, SPRINGFIELD HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER EVERYONE!

FOOD & FUN • BAR | BREW PUB • COCKTAIL • BARTENDER • STEAK • CHEAP EATS • LUNCH SPOT • DELI • COFFEE HOUSE • RESTAURANT • FOOD TRUCK • INTERNATIONAL FOOD • PIZZA • SWEETS & PASTRIES

You can never have too many great places to eat. Greater Springfield has a huge variety of dining options for a community of our size. National chains, local favorites, comfort food, greasy spoon, pub grub, farm fresh, ethnic, bistro – you name, we got it! You will find our diverse dining options “clustered” in a few key locations around Greater Springfield. Most of our national chains are situated on Bechtle Avenue – or as we like to call it, “41 Crossing.” You’ll find some of our local favorites including Ridgewood Café, Mike & Rosy’s Deli and Cecil & Lime Café adjacent to Wittenberg University’s scenic campus. Still more local faves can be found downtown where Seasons Bistro, Fountain on Main, Hickory Inn, Un Mundo, Stella Bleu Bistro and Mela Urban Bistro – among others – reside. A quick trip east out of downtown reveals still more national chains, and some great ethnic choices including Los Mariachis and Linardos Villa. Food trucks are all the rage nationwide, and Greater Springfield is no exception. You’ll find a diverse variety of food trucks at local events, festivals and downtown where they regularly congregate at National Road Commons. We added a few different dining-related categories this time around including International Food, Burger and Cheap Eats. Let us know if we missed any of your favorite “foodie” categories!

LUNCH SPOT

O’Conner’s continues to pop up in 2 019 a number of our “Best of Springfield” categories because they have delicious food, a great atmosphere, nice beer selections and one of the best patios around!

CHEAP EATS

Named best cheap eats for the second 2 019 year in a row, Guerra’s Krazy Taco has quickly become a Springfield Go-To. You’ll see Guerra’s on all kinds of “best taco joint” lists not just regionally, but nationally! The owner himself, Felix Guerra, prepares the incredible tacos, continuously changing his vast and unique menu, giving everyone plenty of options and variety.

We have to admit it’s hard to beat a pub that offers dozens of beer selections, a great outdoor bar/patio, TV’s everywhere. Don’t underestimate their eclectic menu that includes traditional Irish favorites.

We personally recommend the Wild Lucy, the OMG and the Hot Mess. And don’t forget the homemade margaritas!

The SOCA self-funded medical plan. A big opportunity for small employers. The Southern Ohio Chamber Alliance (SOCA) teamed up with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield to create a health program that can lead to more rate stability -- and it could offer potential savings for groups with 50 or fewer employees. This self-funded multiple employer welfare arrangement (MEWA) lets smaller employers join together to share in the overall claims risk. By being part of a larger, self-funded pool, employers have financial protection backed by Anthem’s stop loss coverage. In addition to financial protection, this innovative alternative offers:  Competitive rates  Fixed, predictable monthly payments  A variety of plan designs  Anthem’s broad Blue Access PPO provider network and Essential Rx formulary  Coverage for claims run-out/terminal liability coverage  Expanded wellness offerings  Specially discounted rates on SOCA-exclusive specialty products including dental, vision, life, optional life, and disability insurance Learn more about the SOCA Benefit Plan. ach year the Chamber honors a Springfield native with inclusion into our “Springfield Hall of Honor” - also known as the “Big Dreamers.” The honoree is remembered with a special banner that hangs in the Commerce Pointe Atrium along with such luminaries as Asa Bushnell, Caro Bayley Bosca, John Legend, William Whiteley, Lillian Gish, A.B. Graham, and Jonathan Winters. This year the Chamber’s Executive Committee has chosen Newbery Medal-winning author and illustrator of picture books and children’s literature, Lois Lenski. Ms. Lenski is one of the more celebrated members of Springfield’s “Lost Generation,” a passionate group of artists, writers, actors, and other creatives who moved to New York City or Chicago between 1900 and 1920. This group includes the famous illustrators

BY KEVIN ROSE

Historian, The Turner Foundation

Coles Phillips and Walter Tittle, photographer Berenice Abbott, actresses Lillian and Dorothy Gish, publisher William Warder Norton, and writers W.R. Burnett and Sherwood Anderson. These individuals shifted the paradigms in their respective fields, forever altering our nation’s understanding of what was possible in art, photography, literature, and cinema. I cannot think of a group of people who better exemplify the Chamber’s “Big Dreamers” designation. Ms. Lenski was born at her parents’ house on Cedar Street, just a short walk from Zion German Evangelical Lutheran Church where her father served as minister, preaching each Sunday in German. She was born on the exact same day – October 14, 1893 – as Lillian Gish. In case you are curious, only three people were born in Springfield that day.

Ms. Lenski was thrice nominated for the Newbery Medal, given for the most distinguished contribution to American children’s literature, which she won in 1946 for her children’s novel Strawberry Girl. In her 47-year career, she helped write or illustrate more than 98 books, including some of my children’s favorite books today. Ms. Lenski never forgot her hometown. Beginning in 1952, she gifted a significant collection of her original art and books to Warder Public Library, now the Clark County Public Library. The library honored her on October 14, 1953, her 60th birthday, by renaming the children’s reading room the Lois Lenski Room for Boys and Girls.

GOLF COURSE

LOCAL EVENT

Windy Knoll Golf Club is built on the 2 019 site of the former Windy Knoll Horse Farm, a world-class facility that was home to Avatar, Native Uproar and other Derby-quality horses. Legend has it that Four-Ten, one of the more well known horses from the farm, is buried beneath what is now the 12th hole.

Shortly after sunrise, from mid2 019 June through mid-July, rows of lawn chairs begin appearing between the limestone cliffs of Veterans Park. It’s the time-honored method for reserving a prime spot for a great evening of entertainment!

The course was built in 2001, not all that long ago, but the incorporation of elements from horse farm days, along with the rolling terrain, give the Scottish linksquality layout a unique feel and playing experience here in Central Ohio that is reminiscent of classic courses.

For more than 50 years the Springfield Arts Council has been providing the community with the country’s longest-running, FREE, community arts festival. Local, regional and national acts take the stage over a fiveweek run making the Summer Arts Festival the place to be in Springfield!

This beautiful historic mansion, built in 1852, and situated just minutes from downtown, is the oldest contributing property of the Springfield East High Street Historical District which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. According to architectural historian Kevin Rose, “This house exemplifies East High Street’s remarkable story, adapting to the needs and fashions of changing times.” Today the Woman’s Town Club in approaching their 100th anniversary and their inspiration, Clementine, stands in the form of a bronze statue in the side yard of the building.

he Woman’s Town Club of Springfield, Ohio, was founded in 1922 to provide local women with a center for social and civic activities. Their clubhouse, the Clementine Berry Buchwalter home, the former 805 East High Street residence of Clementine and Captain Edward Buchwalter, a Union Captain in the American Civil War, and President of Superior Drill Company, President of American Seeding Machine Company and first President of The Citizens National Bank of Springfield. Clementine Berry Buchwalter opened her residence to the local women for gatherings. Out of this grew the foundation of the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs. The house would provide hospitality for decades of club parties originated by women from all over the United States. Clemintine organized the Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs, of which she was made

The house deteriorated over the subsequent decades and was saved from a looming demolition in 2001, then underwent a multimillion-dollar restoration that brought this beautiful complex to its original glory.

The Westcott House not only embodies Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative Prairie School architectural design but also extended Wright’s concept of relating the building to its site by means of a terrace, a lily pond, gardens, and other landscape elements.

BEING THE BEST TAKES HARD WORK!

Springfield has a real sense of momentum as businesses both big and small call our community “home.” Over the past ten years we have witnessed more than $400M of investment in our downtown. From healthcare and insurance, to retail and personal services, we are in the midst of a renaissance. The common thread in all these projects is the quality of our local workforce. In addition to these developments, large-scale employers including Topre America and Silfex have decided to make Springfield their home base. These skilled manufacturing companies not only bring hundreds of good paying jobs to our community, but they provide fuel for our small businesses to grow, and prosper. This year we shine a light on our community’s employers, employees, service providers and industry professionals including Best Employer, Best Customer Service, Best Physician, Best Dentist, Best Financial Services Provider, Best Assisted Living Facility, Best Realtor, Best Contractor, and Best Landscaper. Congratulations to all the finalists, and winners. It’s your hard work every day that helps make our community great!

I

downtown SPRINGFIELD BY CHRIS SCHUTTE

f you haven’t visited downtown Springfield recently, you may not recognize it! Our downtown is truly in the midst of a renaissance. Retail is returning, restaurants are opening, events are happening, and infrastructure is being built. Most importantly, PEOPLE are coming back downtown! Here’s a look at recent developments and initiatives that are revitalizing our downtown:

• A 300 bay downtown parking garage with ground floor retail is under construction. This structure has been designed to mesh with the architectural profile of our downtown and will help attract more businesses downtown. • 34 town homes featuring open floor plans and custom finishes are being developed adjacent to National Road Commons. • A new retail/restaurant corridor has emerged on North Fountain with the additions of Salato Deli, Le Torte Dolci bakery, Champion City Guide + Supply and Stella Bleu Bistro.
