he Best of Springfield magazine – now in its sixth year – is a showcase of everything that makes our community great. Dining, entertainment, recreation, quality of life…it’s all here!
This year we explored 39 different “Best Of Springfield” categories covering a wide range of businesses and industries. If the online voting is any indication, we’ll add even more categories next year. More than 3000 ballots were cast naming hundreds of different local businesses as your favorite in the various categories. The open-ended nature of the voting allowed voters to “write in” their winner with the only limitation being that the business is located in Clark County. Voting in many of the categories was very tight with some of the winners overtaking their competition in the final days of voting. In each category you will see one winner – “The Best of the Best” – along with the second and third place finishers. The winners will receive a special framed plaque designating them as “The Best of the Best 2020,” and window clings announcing the designation to their clients and customers. This contest would not have been possible without you, the voters. Thank you for sharing your opinion on what makes Springfield great. And to the winners, congratulations on your achievement and we hope you wear your new title proudly! We would like to thank our sponsors who help make this a great community event: Our Presenting Sponsor, Clark Schaefer Hackett - Our Awards Sponsor, Mercy Health - and our Premier Sponsor, Park National Bank.

2020
One of the great things about living in Springfield is how far your dollar stretches. We’re one of the most affordable cities in the country, and that extends to our entertainment and lifestyle options. Not only that, but many of our local amenities – like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Westcott House, the Hartman Rock Garden and the Smithsonian-affiliate Springfield Museum of Art – are truly world-class attractions. Where else can you experience a five-week long, free Summer Arts Festival in a beautiful natural amphitheater setting? Kayak in whitewater runs through an urban core? Sail on a 2,100-acre lake? Enjoy Broadway productions in a state-of-the-art performing arts center? And “buy local” at a diverse and energetic Farmers Market? Only in Springfield of course! Springfield is an outdoor recreation hub featuring miles of scenic bike trails, paddling and sailing opportunities, hiking and running trails and the 2,100-acre recreational lake at Buck Creek State Park. So get out there and enjoy everything Springfield has to offer. And as our Greater Springfield CVB likes to say: #FindYourUnwind!

2020 On-The-Rise brings farm fresh favorites to downtown Springfield’s Farmers Market! Located in a unique country setting on an eight acre farm just outside of Springfield, On-The-Rise serves at-risk youth in Clark County struggling with family, social, educational, and behavioral issues.
HISTORIC LANDMARK
2020 Due to drastic alterations in the early 1940’s, the Westcott House remained an undiscovered relic for many years - a lost Frank Lloyd Wright artifact. Through the cooporative efforts of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy and the Westcott House Foundation, the site is now an iconic, nationally renowned Wright house museum.
Working at the Springfield Farmers Market teaches employment skills off the farm. Once the youths have made enough progress at the farm with social skills and behavior, they are encouraged to work at the Market.
The Westcott House not only embodies Frank Lloyd Wright’s innovative Prairie School of architectural design but also extended Wright’s concept of relating the building to its site by means of a terrace, a lily pond, gardens, and other landscape elements.

hough Shelby Toops doesn’t have a storefront out at Red Moon Ranch in South Vienna, she’s been overwhelmed with new customers and sales of her farm-to-table meat products since COVID-19 started changing how many people shop. While Toops has built up a business following through her visits to Springfield’s Farmer’s Market last summer and the Worthington Farmer’s Market starting late last year, nothing could have prepared her for the way her business would boom when schools were closed and stay-at-home orders were put in place. As it became difficult to find meat at some area grocery stores, Red Moon Ranch started getting a lot more calls and messages from new local customers. “With all this going on, business has been better than it’s ever been,” Toops says. “I really hope that after all this is over, that I’ve gained a lot of new local and Springfield-area customers.” Toops, a first-generation farmer, raises all the livestock on her farm by herself. From beef to pork and chicken to lamb, Toops has built Red Moon Ranch from the ground up. Customers can call ahead and schedule a time to stop by the farm to purchase meat, eggs, or other items they’re interested in. To meet their needs, Toops set up an online ordering system about a month ago and began scheduling pickup dates twice a month in the parking lot of the Heritage Center. “It’s nothing fancy, but this way I’m able to provide for that customer base,” she says. “Coming out to the farm is normally a pretty good drive for someone in Springfield, so the pickups work. FindYourUnwind.com
“My hope is that after all this, people will continue to support local farmers, and that they’ll remember that we were the ones still providing even when the grocery store shelves were empty.” With her next Springfield pick-up scheduled for this Saturday, May 16, Toops says she’s currently low on available products. “It’s very slim pickings right now. I’m picking up a whole lot of product from my processor in a couple days,” she says. “Everybody has been very patient and grateful, and I try to make sure to explain to people that beef doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. “We’re all trying to provide for people, but with the panic buying, we can’t always keep up because this obviously wasn’t something we planned for,” she says. “Everyone has been very gracious and patient because it’s been a learning curve. The biggest thing I struggle with is trying to keep up with demand.” But Toops says customers shouldn’t worry if her supply of what they’re looking for low for one pick up date because there’s more to come and no shortage of livestock. The problem, however, is in getting products processed quickly enough to meet the current demand. Stoops uses locally-owned J&L Farm Butcher Shop in Medway, which she said is fully booked through the end of the year. Toops, who says she likes to plan ahead, already has dates on the books for taking animals to be processed at J&L, and she says she’s thankful to have that working relationship with another local business she knows and trusts.

Best of Springfield 2020
She says between farmers like her bringing in more livestock for processing than normal and the increase in families buying entire sides of beef – for example – that need butchered, local processors like J&L are as overwhelmed with business as she is. Mike Janow, head meat cutter at Copey’s Butcher Shop in Medway, says typically Copey’s processes not only their own livestock, but also does custom orders for families and farmers who need their personal supplies of meat butchered. The family-owned shop is a staple in Medway and is relied upon not only for cuts of meat, but also for deli meats, cheeses, frozen products, homemade salads, pies, and much more. “Because of the COVID-19 crisis, it’s been so busy that we’re not having enough time to process the custom cattle, so we’re working Sundays and Mondays (when the business is usually closed) trying to get that done,” he says, adding that they’ve tried to limit custom orders right now in order to make time to process the additional meat products they need to supply daily storefront customers.
customers are used to once the major processing plants are back up and running. Matt Dibert is the sales manager at Fink Meat Company in Springfield, and he also says they’re experiencing the same rapid price increases from the sellers they buy from. Fink’s is a wholesaler that processes meat to sell to restaurants and institutions, Dibert says. Since dine-in restaurant service stopped weeks ago and many restaurants closed, Dibert says the company lost about half its business. “We’ve always sold meat to the public, but we’ve never much advertised it,” says Dibert, who explains that the county fair pork chops and seasoning are some of their best sellers, especially during cook-out months. “We’d always have people stop in, but nothing like this where we’ve had people line up out the door.” Like Copey’s, Fink’s has become a reliable outlet for new and returning local customers to find people that they haven’t been able to find on grocery shelves during the past couple months.
And the number of storefront customers has greatly increased, with a social-distanced line that, at-times, winds out of the front door and around the parking lot. “I believe we have had some new customers. We’re really happy about that, and we hope they come back,” Janow says. “I do think that there are people that are looking for more local places because they figure we always have meat.” While Copey’s would occasionally supplement their meat cases with products purchased outside their own livestock, Janow says they’ve had to increase their amount of supplemental products to try to keep up with demand. ‘We’re just trying to get as many people meat who want it as we can. It’s a challenge right now,” he says. “You might order 20 cases right now and get two – so it’s rough.” Janow says the limited meat supply is not because of a shortage of livestock, but rather because of the closure of multiple of the major meat processing plants nationally. Multiple of the plants were closed in the last couple weeks because of major outbreaks of coronavirus among employees. The national processing dilemma has also caused meat prices to skyrocket in the last week, he says. “It’s crazy how much it went up over such a short period of time. I’ve been here 22 years and I’ve never ever seen it so high before, ever,” Janow says. “Customers are going to see rising costs because the prices for what we’re bringing in have almost doubled. If we sold our products for what we sold them for a week ago, we wouldn’t have a shop.” However, Janow says he’s hopeful prices will return to what
“It’s worked out that we could stay open. I don’t know what would have happened if we didn’t have the retail side,” Dibert says. “This is making up about 25 percent of what we lost, so we’re at least able to keep everything paid and keep the doors open. “And, we felt like we’ve helped the people around here because they got tired of going to the store not knowing what they were going to be able to get. They can come here and know what they’re going to get.” Dibert says customers have been appreciative of the service Fink’s has been able to provide – including some fresh meat, such as ground chuck and pork loin, and some frozen, packaged meats, such as a steak box and meat variety box. “Our hope is that after all this is over, we can go back to doing what we always did before, but we can keep a percentage of our retail business,” he says. And with the prices of the products they usually bring in continuing to climb, Dibert says Fink’s will work to keep consumer cost down as low as they can for as long as they can. “We’re fortunate that we saw this coming, and we loaded up as much as we could,” he says. “So, we’re not going to pay these prices. We’re going to ride it out with what we’ve got and hopefully prices will readjust.” Janow and Dibert both agree that while customers should still be able to get meat – especially from local shops like theirs – they might end up shouldering some of the increased costs until the processing pipeline is back up and running at full force.

Greater Springfield has a huge variety of dining options for a community of our size. National chains, local favorites, comfort food, greasy spoon, pub grub, farm fresh, ethnic, bistro – you name, we got it! You will find our diverse dining options “clustered” in a few key locations around Greater Springfield. Most of our national chains are situated on Bechtle Avenue – or as we like to call it, “41 Crossing.” You’ll find some of our local favorites including Ridgewood Café, Mike & Rosy’s Deli and Cecil & Lime Café adjacent to Wittenberg University’s scenic campus. Still more local faves can be found downtown where Fountain on Main, Hickory Inn, Un Mundo, Stella Bleu Bistro, COhatch, Speakeasy and Mela Urban Bistro – among others – reside. A quick trip east out of downtown reveals still more national chains, and some great ethnic choices including Los Mariachis and Linardos Villa. It’s more important than ever to support our local restaurants, bars and brew pubs. All of them have been severely impacted by the global pandemic. Rest assured that they continue to appreciate your business - both in-person and carry out - as they navigate through this unprecedented time!

hris Lewis remembers his love for Springfield starting from a young age. “When I was a kid, I walked around downtown with my dad, and you might as well have felt like you were in downtown Chicago. You were in the shadows of all these tall buildings – it was fantastic,” says Lewis, who has spent even more time walking the streets of Springfield over the years while deciding where his investments might have the most impact. Born at the former Community Hospital, Lewis established a commitment to the community that’s been life-long. “I’ve always gone by the phrase ‘You should bloom where you’re planted,’” he says. “I feel like if you’re going to benefit from a community, you need to contribute to that community also.” And contribute he has. After spending the younger part of his childhood living on Catherine Street, his father’s sales job led the family to move near Donnelsville. By the time Lewis was a freshman at Techumseh High School, his father was working as a contractor. Lewis helped his dad on jobs doing rehab work on low-income housing in Springfield.
“I cut my teeth in the construction industry doing that rehab work,” says Lewis, whose other passion during his late teens and early 20s was competitive power lifting and body building. “I was always interested in the health and fitness industry,” he says. “I knew I wanted to own a gym. I wanted to train people and help others achieve their goals. To work toward his goal of owning a gym, Lewis learned about the housing market in Springfield all while continuing to help his father and doing some of his own remodeling projects. After a short stint at Anderson College, Lewis returned to Springfield and made plans to buy a house under foreclosure. Lewis borrowed $5,000 from his grandparents to buy the first home he remodeled. After the sale, he paid them back, and used the proceeds to buy the next property. “My philosophy behind buying houses and getting paid every month was that to be able to leverage myself so I could build a gym,” Lewis says. Between 1986 and 1990, Lewis says he bought about 50 properties in Springfield, targeting homes along the

city’s corridors along South Limestone and North streets. “I had this idea in my mind that I’d be more impactful and change the way people thought of Springfield when they drove into town,” he remembers. Eventually, Lewis fulfilled his dream of owning a gym, which he built at the corner of North and Plum streets. Power Plus Gym served customers there from the mid- to late-90s. Even while running the gym, Lewis never stopped buying properties throughout Springfield. Following his gym ownership, Lewis developed Phoenix Properties group, which was soon followed by Phoenix Builders and Renovators. “By just blind luck, by the time they were getting ready to build the new hospital (in the mid-2000s), I owned 26 properties in the footprint where they were looking to build,” Lewis says. “With the city wanting to buy those 26 parcels, it was really a catapult that took me to the next level.” Always looking for his next move to benefit his city, Lewis decided he would invest almost all of his proceeds from the hospital property purchases back into the city.
Among his acquisitions, Lewis says he bought properties in the Derby Glen subdivision, purchased the Buckeye Lodge, renovated and opened the former Dream Cup Coffee, bought the building that now houses Sip & Dipity Paint Bar, and more. He also decided to buy Ridgewood Café, which he says was a little rough at first. “It had been a cool neighborhood spot for years, but the old owner was done at the time,” Lewis says. “I felt it needed an upgrade to fit the quality of the neighborhood better, but you wouldn’t believe the number of people who hated that I took away their dive bar and made it into an upscale dining restaurant that fit into the neighborhood. “I took my lumps for it, but then it came around.” And Lewis owns this kind of unapologetic investment. It’s part of who he is. “I’ve never had a clear-cut plan when it comes to investing. I travel the streets a lot looking for opportunities and looking for places I can lend my skill set to,” he says. “When a particular building or area calls out to me, I go after it aggressively. I don’t have huge funds behind me. I just have the money I’ve earned.”
While the plan might not always be clear-cut, there is definitely a plan. Lewis says he recently purchased six open lots on which to build houses – the first of which is under construction now. “I have a projected profit for all six. The only reason I did those is to take the profits and reinvest downtown. That’s how I operate,” he says. “I’m not going to make money off the builds to buy a house on the lake or a boat. I’m going to bring it back downtown and reinvest.” Through the stay-at-home orders caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lewis chose to temporarily close Ridgewood Café, but he and his wife Rebecca have kept their other restaurant – the Buckeye Lodge – open for carryout. He says it’s been a good time to slow down and reflect on the business, which he first purchased because he wanted to save the building. He says they’ve looked at changing the Buckeye from a membership-based club to nonmembership restaurant. “This shut down has helped me make the decision to go public with the restaurant and be woven more into the fabric of what’s going on downtown,” Lewis says. “At times you have to adapt and reinvent what you’re doing. Downtown Springfield is the place to be,

and we want to be an active part of it.” And though Lewis would say he’s not one of the major players investing in Springfield - downtown and around town - he has definitely had a hand in a variety of renovations and remodels , including the Johnson flats, Deitzel lofts, The Stables restaurant, Winan’s Chocolates and Coffees downtown location, and much more. As for what’s next, Lewis says he has a few ideas, but the only one he’s ready to share is plans for new apartments on the floors above Sip & Dipity. His investment goals might be leading him there next, but that certainly won’t be where he stops. “You can’t overstate the importance of investing in anything,” Lewis says. “And there are different levels of investment in a city. Homeownership – just buying a home in a city is investing in the city. Shopping here, working in the city, you can invest your time – they’re all investments. It’s exceedingly important that, to the best of your abilities and capabilities, you invest back into your community.”

BEING THE BEST TAKES HARD WORK!
Springfield has a real sense of momentum as businesses both big and small call our community “home.” Over the past ten years we have witnessed more than $500M of investment in our downtown. From healthcare and insurance, to retail and personal services, we are in the midst of a renaissance. The common thread in all these projects is the quality of our local workforce. In addition to these developments, large-scale employers including Topre America and Silfex have recently decided to make Springfield their home base. These skilled manufacturing companies not only bring hundreds of good paying jobs to our community, but they provide fuel for our small businesses to grow, and prosper. This year we shine a light on our community’s employers, employees, service providers and industry professionals including Best Employer, Best Customer Service, Best Physician, Best Dental Professional, Best Financial Services Provider, Best Assisted Living Facility, Best Realtor, Best Contractor, and more. Congratulations to all the finalists, and winners. It’s your hard work every day that helps make our community great!

hen the Kroger on South Limestone Street closed on Wednesday, March 4 — the last remaining grocery store on the south side of Springfield — it left the neighborhood’s residents without a source for fresh, healthy food. South-side residents have few options other than a sea of nearly 20 fast food restaurants along South Limestone Street. But a group of five lifelong friends who graduated from Springfield South High School have recognized the lack of healthy choices and they are about to launch a business that they hope will both educate residents on the benefits of healthy eating and offer an alternative to the more prevalent burgers-and-fries option. The Main Squeeze Juice Bar is scheduled to roll out on the south side in May — offering fresh squeezed juice to customers from a mobile cart. “We looked at what Springfield needs, especially on the south side,” says Craig Williams, who founded Main Squeeze with partners Earl Taylor, Jafar Jones, Melvin Hardnick, and Marcus Clark. The five of them all have day jobs, ranging from running a clothing store to financial coaching. “We want to elevate people and help people change what they eat.” Williams says fried foods and other unhealthy snacks are a lifestyle on the south side. He says he grew up liking chicken fingers and French fries (he uses the meal as a catch-all phrase for all fast food). As he developed FindYourUnwind.com
a healthier lifestyle, Williams and his friends wanted to stop the spread of a junk food diet on the south side. “When that is the most affordable option available then it’s a problem that needs to be addressed,” he says. Williams says they decided to sell juice, simply because it’s an easy way to get the daily allowances of fruits and vegetables. “We choose juice because people have a tendency to consume fruit in a liquid form more than a solid, which can be less messy depending on the fruit and easier to consume,” he says. When it launches early this summer, the five men will use a generator, blenders, and coolers to operate Main Squeeze out of parking lots and at community events. In the colder months, out of the shared kitchen in the historic Bushnell Building, 16 N. Fountain Ave., the business will sell fresh-squeezed juice blends and educate patrons on the healthy benefits of fruits and vegetables. The drinks are all-natural with no added sugar or other additives. “We’re not going to put a dollop of whipped cream on it, or chocolate, or anything like that,” says Taylor. “You get the sweetness from the fruit.”
Fast Food Neighborhood Taylor, a financial coach with Wright-Patt Credit Union, points out that the closest grocery store with fresh produce is a 10-minute drive from the south side, and local farmers markets are at least a 15-minute drive. “But a lot of people don’t have
29

access to transportation,” he points out. Nearly 29,000 Springfield residents live within two miles of the now-closed Kroger, and many people in the low- and medium-income neighborhood do not own or have access to cars. The partners say fast food has become a way of life on the south side. About five years ago, Taylor casually suggested starting a healthy food business. But the guys got serious about a year ago. After Jones heard about Springfield Hustles — a business pitch competition launched by the Springfield Small Business Development Center (SBDC) to encourage local entrepreneurs to contribute to Springfield’s economy — the men decided to move forward. “We felt like now was the right time in our lives to do something together, as we are at points in our lives where we could be a positive influence where we are from,” says Williams. “We want to help start the generational change in our communities. This is something that could potentially inspire our children to aspire to be better in all aspects of their lives.” They are all former high school and college athletes — many of them still play competitively —and Taylor and Clark today coach track and football for Springfield High School. The men also have formed a running group to both keep themselves active and encourage the rest of the community to start exercising. “We’re not totally health conscious, but we are aware of health and the role it plays in our lives,” says Taylor.
The Mission and the Juice All five men are keeping their full-time jobs. But they say they felt the urge to stress the importance of incorporating fruits and vegetables into diets. “We feel it’s necessary to educate people because education is power,” Williams says. “If we can provide the knowledge to others about what they eat and what it can do for their health, we feel that we can give them the power to better themselves.” When Main Squeeze opens, they will offer six juice blends that will sell for $5. Menu items include juices with names like Porch Life (orange, pineapple, and mint), Love Bomb (grapefruit, strawberry, mango, and peaches), and The Green Kicked In (celery, kale, lemon, green apple, cucumber, and spinach). “Minorities suffer the most in our nation from conditions that are treatable by having a healthy diet and active lifestyle and that is our main focus right now,” adds Williams. The back of the juice menu lists various fruits and vegetables and their health benefits. For instance, carrots, celery, and spinach help fight diabetes; while bananas, strawberries, and pears help reduce stress. “We want to show them that dragon fruit is good, kiwi is delicious, cucumber is refreshing,” says Taylor. “Even if we’re having a casual conversation, juice is one of the things we can break down [the health benefits] so they know about of it and feel educated enough to go forward.” In addition to the six regular juice blends on the menu, a seventh option will be a juice-of-the-month — designed and named by a different customer each month. Even though Main Squeeze is not yet open, customers are submitting their blends and a name for the juice via social media. One recent winner was invited to come make and try “21” (his jersey number), a blend of pomegranate, pineapple, blueberry, and ginger, before it was declared a winner.
Kicking into High Gear The group did not compete in the Springfield Hustles competition, but it served as a springboard for moving forward. “We decided that having a business plan would be a good idea so we can outline our goals and potentially attract lenders if we decided that it would be necessary,” recalls Williams. “It gave us more incentive to go down there.” On a day off from his full-time job taking claims at the Social Security Administration, he stopped into the SBDC and met Rob Alexander, the center’s executive director, who helped the team assess their goals, find out about resources, and create a business plan. The group estimated the original food truck plan would require between $20,000 and $30,000—$40,000 to be safe, Taylor says. But Alexander convinced the men (who are selffunding the startup) to start small and scale Main Squeeze as the company grows. As far as scaling the business, Alexander says Main Squeeze decided ultimately to start with a mobile operation that can fit into an SUV and set up in parking lots and at events, then move into a food truck, then a fleet of food trucks, and eventually a bricks-and-mortar location. Alexander estimates Main Squeeze’s startup costs with the mobile setup will be under $5,000. The group has not solidified locations, except for Jones’ clothing store, L.I.E. Store on Yellow Springs Street, but they plan to mainly stay on the south side. Williams says they hope to partner with the Springfield YMCA and businesses with parking lots around South Limestone Street. Eventually, they say they’d like to start juice delivery around Springfield.
FindYourUnwind.com
Engaging the South Side Main Squeeze’s vision extends beyond juice. The partners are part of a fitness group that promotes healthy lifestyles. In February they issued a 40-mile run-walk challenge to the Springfield public — inviting anyone who wanted to join them to attempt to run 40 miles during the month. “We did a blast on social media, [inviting] people who wanted to change their lifestyles or wanted to run with people,” says Taylor, who adds that almost 30 people participated and no one was held to the full 40 miles. In March, the group upped the goal to 60 miles. “Anybody can achieve 60 miles” by starting with smaller goals, Williams says. “If you did one mile in February, come out and do five miles.” But most of all, the partners of Main Squeeze want to promote healthier food options on the south side of Springfield. “We’re all selfless people — we’re happy when everybody else is happy,” Taylor says. “That’s our satisfaction.”
