HELLO!

THE RIGHT SIZE. THE RIGHT PLACE. THE RIGHT PEOPLE.

welcome to

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

THE RIGHT SIZED COMMUNITY For many it’s somewhere between a town and a city. It’s a place that has cultural offerings like theaters, a performing arts center and a summer music festival. It provides strong schools, colleges and universities. It offers recreational facilities like an ice rink, waterpark, a kayaking venue and cliff climbing.

As this guide will show you, Springfield is just such a community — large enough to support abundant city amenities, but small enough so that all can work together and allow Springfield to be stronger than the sum of its parts.

WHAT’S INSIDE

EASY ACCESS TO WORK, HOME AND FUN

———— he very thing that makes the community easy to get around in for social, business and recreational purposes also makes it easy to get around in, period. Those who live and work in the Greater Springfield area have no commutes to speak of. Instead, they use their “drive time” to head to Columbus to see the Blue Jackets or Buckeyes, to Dayton to see a UD game or the minor league Reds affiliate, the Dragons. And in just a few more minutes, they can be at the Great American Ballpark or the zoo in Cincinnati, or slip across the river to the Newport Aquarium.

———— n addition to being in an ideal location for families to take in a wide variety of activities, Springfield’s location on Interstate 70 just half an hour from the junction of Interstate 75 makes it a perfect place to do business. Sixty-one percent of the nation’s population is within 600 miles, and a municipal airport makes it more convenient for those whose business is done in aeronautical miles. A variety of industrial parks also make it a place where industries can easily park themselves for a promising future.

SPRINGFIELD RECOGNIZED FOR QUALITY OF LIFE

———— When you choose to make your home in Springfield, you can rest assured you’ll have a great life at a great price. In fact, Forbes magazine recognized our affordable living and great quality of life, ranking Springfield the 8th best place to live inexpensively in the United States.

411 Before the coming of Social Security programs, Springfield was the location of state children’s homes for the Knights of Pythias, International Order of Odd Fellows and Ohio Masons and of the Oesterlen Lutheran Orphans Home. The Masonic Home’s main building, for obvious reasons nicknamed “The Castle,” still dominates the crest of a hill along Ohio 40 on the city’s west side.

TOURING TIP no. 1 TO SEE Harry Kissell’s handiwork in the Ridgewood neighborhood, take a drive up Fountain Avenue from McCreight Avenue to Home Road.

NEW CARLISLE + THE VILLAGES OF CLARK COUNTY

Small Towns & Rural Scenes Nearly one-half of Clark County’s population lives in our smaller cities and villages. If a small town or rural setting is what you are looking for, take a stroll down New Carlisle’s main street or take in the acres of farmland that surround South Charleston and you’ll see why so many of our residents call these areas home.

New Carlisle Clark County’s second largest city, with 6,000 residents, New Carlisle enjoys a vibrant downtown and is just minutes away from the I-70 / I-75 intersection — the “crossroads of America.”

Enon Once a bedroom community for Dayton, Enon, with its 2,400 residents has grown in its own right as the headquarters of Speedway LLC and the home of the Enon Apple Butter Festival.

South Charleston Few communities embrace their history like the home of the regionally known South Charleston Opera House and the zip code for many of the area’s farmers.

South Vienna Home of the national large-equipment auctioneers, Ritchie Brothers, and the South Vienna Corn Festival, the village of 400 residents embraces its agricultural roots. greaterspringfield.com

———— Thanks to our great location, the amenities of living in Springfield extend beyond the county line. With Ohio’s capital city Columbus to our east and the state’s third-largest city Cincinnati to our south, big-city entertainment, shopping and dining are just an hour or two away. Nationwide Arena, Ohio Stadium and King’s Island amusement park are within an hour’s drive; the University of Dayton and the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball are 30 minutes away; and Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark, Paul Brown Stadium and the Newport Aquarium, just across the Ohio River, are just a couple of hours away.

Amidst the handsome multi-colored stone work, keep an eye out for an owl that guards the property. The Bushnell Building (1903) sits in the city’s core while the Bushnell Mansion—now the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home—once served as the spectacular anchor to a stretch of High Street once called Millionaire’s Row. Another tribute to the road and its travelers stands in the downtown park, National Road Commons. In 2011, the Daughters of the American Revolution gave their blessing to move the circa-1928 Madonna of the Trail statue to the new downtown park. The Simon Kenton Trail extends the Little Miami Trail corridor another 18 miles north from downtown Springfield to Urbana, Ohio. It begins amidst all that Springfield has to offer, from the arts to the ECO Sports Corridor and then swiftly proceeds to the rolling farm countryside of Ohio on your way to Urbana. There are also countless hiking trails in the area including Buck Creek State Park, Glen Helen, Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park.

Snyder Park, Springfield’s “Central Park”, includes tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, water spray grounds, ornamental gardens and Central Bark – an enclosed dog park. FAMOUS FIGURES WITH SPRINGFIELD CONNECTIONS

Take a Statue Tour Downtown

VISITORS WILL NOTICE A SERIES OF DOWNTOWN STATUES IN SPRINGFIELD. HERE ARE THE STORIES OF SOME.

O.S. KELLY stands on his Esplanade in front of the Courtyard Marriott. Kelly was the financial backer of William Whiteley, whose Champion reaper turned Springfield into an agri-business manufacturing mecca. GEN. GEORGE ROGERS CLARK looks west from the corner of Fountain Avenue and Main Street. Rogers had the unenviable task of trying to maintain an American claim over the thinly populated western frontier after the war for independence.

HARRY TOULMIN stands, pen in hand, across the street from the Bushnell Building. He was the patent attorney for the most famous pioneers in flight, the Wright Brothers.

A.B. GRAHAM, founder of 4-H, can be seen in a statue tucked behind a building named for him at the

southwest corner of Limestone and Columbia Streets. Graham was superintendent of the Springfield Township Schools where he persistently championed the cause of education to farm families.

TECUMSEH, legendary Shawnee leader, stands north of the Springfield Museum of Art along Veterans

Park Drive. Although a fierce warrior, he disdained the torture often practiced on frontier captives and tried in vain to assemble a coalition of Native American groups to resist the westward push of settlers.

DAVEY MOORE, the 1959 world featherweight champion, stands along Limestone Street just south of the city’s downtown. Moore, who died days after losing a defense of his title, is celebrated in a Bob Dylan song. His funeral procession to Ferncliff Cemetery is the largest the city has ever seen.

It was followed by the construction of the state-of-theart acute care hospital — Springfield Regional Medical Center — on a spacious campus between North Street and the handsome cliffs above Buck Creek. Physician-owned Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital was the next to locate downtown, offering more than 40 surgical specialties in its modern facility at 100 West Main Street. The recently constructed Mental Health Services of Clark and Madison Counties is the newest addition to the downtown medical community, providing a range of mental health services to individuals in a two-county area.

TIDBIT FOR A TASTE of Springfield’s past, go to the Fountain on Main and order the chopped olive and nut sandwich on grilled wheat, a tribute to a much remembered downtown eatery, Jim’s Sandwich Shop. FINE DINERS may want to try Cecil and Lime on Cecil St., or Mela Urban Bistro in the Marriott or the locally owned and operated Stella Bleu Bistro, at 20 N Fountain Ave.

———— To add gathering and green space downtown, the Community Improvement Corporation developed the National Road Commons and relocated the historic MADONNA OF THE TRAIL statue there. A block away, a streetscape project on Fountain Avenue has accessorized the look of small shops made more accessible by a change to two-way traffic. The historic Bushnell Building, designed at the dawn of the 20th Century by the nationally known firm, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, underwent a major renovation recently, making space for new business while again preserving the past. With the help of the Turner Foundation, several downtown churches also prepared for the future by countering the effects of gravity and erosion.

———— As we strive to add vibrancy to downtown Springfield, public art will be a priority moving forward. Our Public Art Committee which was formed in 2019 has successfully launched numerous mural, signal box wrap and vinyl art projects. These new installs – many featuring local artists – are in addition to existing murals (Gus Sun, Second Harvest and the Springfield YMCA) and an impressive collection of historical statues in our downtown core.

CLARK STATE COLLEGE

WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY

Hometown Clark State College helped to pioneer two-year, post-high school education in Ohio. Its students, traditional and non-traditional, have more than 125 degree and certificate programs from which to choose. The college works hand in hand with local employers to create training and certificate programs tailored for local workforce needs.

Since 1845, Wittenberg University has set a standard of excellence both in liberal arts education and small college (now Division III) athletics. In more recent years, women’s field hockey and volleyball teams have begun to add to the powerhouse tradition in men’s football and basketball. Endowment of the Sarah Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement has strengthened ties with Springfield. To serve the community more directly, the university is also bringing a liberal arts flavor to more career-oriented offerings, including a bachelor’s in nursing program, a criminal justice program and an accounting degree completion program.

The curriculum includes the new Advanced Manufacturing Program that focuses on welding, additive manufacturing, CNC, and Industrial Maintenance which was funded by a $2.5M grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS HAVE LONG BEEN AN IMPORTANT SEGMENT OF EDUCATION IN CLARK COUNTY.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL SCHOOLS Catholic Central Schools, a K through 12 program, is prepared for the future with a $6.3 million building expansion to better accommodate its program of students with exceptional college acceptance rates.

EMMANUEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Emmanuel Christian Academy, which educates from preschool through high school, provides a Christian-based education on a gleaming campus at Springfield’s north end.

RIDGEWOOD SCHOOL The school’s 1st through 8th grade program is one of the oldest independent co-ed schools in the state. Its students regularly become leaders in the high schools of their choice.

NIGHTINGALE MONTESSORI

EXPANDING LOCAL HIGHER ED OPPORTUNITIES

Nightingale Montessori is the area’s only Montessori school, providing an individually focused education for students in grades K through 12.

SPRINGFIELD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY Vibrant Cedarville University is a 20-minute drive south. Carrying a proud 125year Christian tradition, it has established itself as a top-flight university with a wide range of offerings, with strength in the science and health fields. Cedarville’s Yellow Jackets are a longtime powerhouse in the Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference, but the university has even more pride in its celebration of Biblical truths.

ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY MIDWEST Antioch University Midwest, in nearby Yellow Springs, provides a convenient way for adults to complete their bachelor’s degrees or to tailor individualized master’s programs to fit their career plans. The university’s Ph.D. in Leadership and Change has established itself as a program that fits its time, and online and overseas studies provide flexibility that makes it possible to fit meaningful learning into the context of busy lives.

ANTIOCH COLLEGE In the spirit of its first president, Horace Mann, Antioch College in Yellow Springs provides a rigorous liberal arts education with the belief that scholarship and life experience are strengthened when linked, that diversity in all its manifestations is a fundamental component of excellence in education, and that authentic social and community engagement is vital for those who strive to win victories for humanity.
