As lovely as it is, however, the house that Wright designed for Springfield automaker Burton Westcott hasn’t just parked itself and sat idling. ———— Before Frank Lloyd Wright, H. H. Richardson was America’s premier architect. His Richardson Romanesque style is found all over the city. The finest example is the Warder Literacy Center (1890), at the corner of Spring and High Streets, industrialist Benjamin Warder’s tribute to his loving parents. Amidst the handsome multi-colored stone work, keep an eye out for an owl that guards the property. The Bushnell Building (1903) sits in the city’s core while the Bushnell Mansion—now the Richards, Raff & Dunbar Memorial Home—once served as the spectacular anchor to a stretch of High Street once called Millionaire’s Row. ———— The Pennsylvania House, commonly known as “The Inn at the End of the Pike,” opened in 1839 to provide a welcome relief for pioneers heading west on the National Road. The beautifully restored 24-room house museum and its artifacts is maintained by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Another tribute to the road and its travelers stands in the downtown park, National Road Commons. In 2011, the Daughters of the American Revolution gave their blessing to move the circa-1928 Madonna of the Trail statue to the new downtown park. One of 12 statues commissioned by the DAR in 1927, the Madonna honors the courage and sacrifice of the country’s founding mothers. H E R I TA G E C E N T E R

———— Greater Springfield is home to miles of multi-use, paved trails including the Little Miami Scenic Trail which stretches from Springfield nearly 80 miles south to Milford. The Simon Kenton Trail extends the Little Miami Trail corridor another 18 miles north from downtown Springfield to Urbana, Ohio. It begins amidst all that Springfield has to offer, from the arts to the ECO Sports Corridor and then swiftly proceeds to the rolling farm countryside of Ohio on your way to Urbana. There are also countless hiking trails in the area including Buck Creek State Park, Glen Helen, Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park.

———— Springfield’s park system has long been the envy of other Ohio cities. The “green belt” is comprised of Snyder Park, Reid Park and Veteran’s Park. Snyder Park, Springfield’s “Central Park”, includes tennis courts, playgrounds, picnic shelters, water spray grounds, ornamental gardens and Central Bark – an enclosed dog park. Veterans Park is home to the Springfield Museum of Art and hosts the annual Summer Arts Festival at its Turner Pavilion. The park also boasts a playground and amateur bouldering on its scenic cliffs.

———— George Rogers Clark Park, home to the historic Hertzler House, sits across from a reconstructed 1800s-era barn and within walking distance of a stockade and collection of Native American and pioneer artifacts. While there, stop at the park’s Davidson Interpretive Center, where the “Clash of Cultures” exhibit explains why General George Rogers Clark stormed north from Kentucky in 1780. Visit the Fair at New Boston on Labor Day weekend for a widely respected reenactment of a turn of the 19th century trade fair. The Clark County Park District also looks after the Estel Wenrick Wetlands on the county’s west side, yet another venue for getting out in nature.

Its 28-member roster of the top collegiate talent plays approximately 30 games at Springfield’s Carlton Davidson Stadium between June and August. Its minor-league atmosphere provides affordable, family-friendly entertainment for all ages.

———— The recently opened Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve offers some of the finest natural climbing cliffs in the Midwest ascending to nearly 50 feet! The Access Fund and Ohio Climbers Coalition partnered with the Clark County Park District to develop this exciting new natural area. The Gorge also offers scenic hiking trails and access to the Mad River.

———— When the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers decided to do something to keep Buck Creek from periodically inundating Springfield, the 2,100 acres of Lake Lagonda began to form. On the 1,900 acres surrounding it, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources created Buck Creek State Park with a sand beach, full-service marina, cabins and trails. Fishermen, bikers, boaters, horseback riders, campers and hikers return to its shores every year along with the migrating birds. F R O Z E N W AT E R F U N

THE CHILLER ICE ARENA

———— The latest addition to Springfield’s recreational reservoir is the NTPRD Chiller, owned by the National Trail Parks and Recreation District and operated by the Chiller Ice Rinks of the Columbus area. O.S. KELLY stands on his Esplanade in front of the Courtyard Marriott. Kelly was the financial backer of William Whiteley, whose Champion reaper turned Springfield into an agri-business manufacturing mecca. GEN. GEORGE ROGERS CLARK looks west from the corner of Fountain Avenue and Main Street. Rogers had the unenviable task of trying to maintain an American claim over the thinly populated western frontier after the war for independence.

HARRY TOULMIN stands, pen in hand, across the street from the Bushnell Building. He was the patent attorney for the most famous pioneers in flight, the Wright Brothers.

A.B. GRAHAM, founder of 4-H, can be seen in a statue tucked behind a building named for him at the

southwest corner of Limestone and Columbia Streets. Graham was superintendent of the Springfield Township Schools where he persistently championed the cause of education to farm families.

TECUMSEH, legendary Shawnee leader, stands north of the Springfield Museum of Art along Veterans

Park Drive. Although a fierce warrior, he disdained the torture often practiced on frontier captives and tried in vain to assemble a coalition of Native American groups to resist the westward push of settlers.

DAVEY MOORE, the 1959 world featherweight champion, stands along Limestone Street just south of the city’s downtown. Moore, who died days after losing a defense of his title, is celebrated in a Bob Dylan song. His funeral procession to Ferncliff Cemetery is the largest the city has ever seen.

———— The Springfield Regional Cancer Center on North Street was the first medical facility to anchor itself downtown. It was followed by the construction of the state-of-theart acute care hospital — Springfield Regional Medical Center — on a spacious campus between North Street and the handsome cliffs above Buck Creek. Physician-owned Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital was the next to locate downtown, offering more than 40 surgical specialties in its modern facility at 100 West Main Street. The recently constructed Mental Health Services of Clark and Madison Counties is the newest addition to the downtown medical community, providing a range of mental health services to individuals in a two-county area.

———— To add gathering and green space downtown, the Community Improvement Corporation developed the National Road Commons and relocated the historic MADONNA OF THE TRAIL statue there. A block away, a streetscape project on Fountain Avenue has accessorized the look of small shops made more accessible by a change to two-way traffic. The historic Bushnell Building, designed at the dawn of the 20th Century by the nationally known firm, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, underwent a major renovation recently, making space for new business while again preserving the past. With the help of the Turner Foundation, several downtown churches also prepared for the future by countering the effects of gravity and erosion.

———— Mural artist, Mariah Kaminsky, and twenty-two Project Jericho students worked together to create the Rose City Mural located at 10 East Main Street. WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY

Hometown Clark State College helped to pioneer two-year, post-high school education in Ohio. Its students, traditional and non-traditional, have more than 125 degree and certificate programs from which to choose. The college works hand in hand with local employers to create training and certificate programs tailored for local workforce needs.

Since 1845, Wittenberg University has set a standard of excellence both in liberal arts education and small college (now Division III) athletics. In more recent years, women’s field hockey and volleyball teams have begun to add to the powerhouse tradition in men’s football and basketball. Endowment of the Sarah Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement has strengthened ties with Springfield. To serve the community more directly, the university is also bringing a liberal arts flavor to more career-oriented offerings, including a bachelor’s in nursing program, a criminal justice program and an accounting degree completion program.

The curriculum includes the new Advanced Manufacturing Program that focuses on welding, additive manufacturing, CNC, and Industrial Maintenance which was funded by a $2.5M grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

This free, month-long celebration of music and fun has been taking place between the scenic cliffs along Buck Creek for nearly 50 years and draws attendees from across the region and state. ———— In what might be likened to a modern observance of the summer solstice, rows of lawn chairs start appearing shortly after sunup between the limestone cliffs of Veterans Park from mid-June through mid-July. It’s the time-honored method for reserving a prime spot for that evening’s performance at the Springfield Summer Arts Festival.

The admission-free festival has something for everyone — from those whose tastes run from ribs to Rachmaninoff. Tribute bands annually attract the likes of Parrotheads and Deadheads. Homegrown talents John Legend and Griffin House might drop by. Staples include the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and musicals showcasing local and touring talent. ———— Each Labor Day, history lovers and re-enactors from across the country migrate to George Rogers Clark Park for the Fair at New Boston. Held near the grounds of the Battle of Peckuwe, the largest Revolutionary War battle fought west of the Allegheny Mountains, the event transports attendees to the 18th century, where tinsmiths, blacksmiths and tatters display their wares between taverns, and ruffians do their best to avoid detection by constables on patrol. The regular firing of the 6-pound cannon near the stockade helps moderns hear echoes of the Ohio past while General George Rogers Clark patrols the grounds.
