HELLO!

THE RIGHT SIZE. THE RIGHT PLACE. THE RIGHT PEOPLE

welcome to

WHERE IT ALL BEGINS

THE RIGHT SIZED COMMUNITY? For many it’s somewhere between a town and a city. It’s a place that has cultural offerings like theaters, a performing arts center and a summer music festival. It provides strong schools, community colleges and universities. It offers recreational facilities like an ice rink, waterpark, a kayaking venue and cliff climbing.

As this guide will show you, Springfield is just such a community — large enough to support abundant city amenities, but small enough so that all can work together and allow Springfield to be stronger than the sum of its parts.

WHAT’S INSIDE

EASY ACCESS TO WORK, HOME AND FUN

———— he very thing that makes the community easy to get around in for social, business and recreational purposes also makes it easy to get around in, period. Those who live and work in the Springfield/Clark County area have no commutes to speak of. Instead, they use their “drive time” to head to Columbus to see the Blue Jackets or Buckeyes, to Dayton to see a UD game or the minor league Reds affiliate, the Dragons. And in just a few more minutes, they can be at the Great American Ballpark or the zoo in Cincinnati, or slip across the river to the Newport Aquarium.

Sixty-one percent of the nation’s population is within 600 miles, and a municipal airport makes it more convenient for those whose business is done in aeronautical miles. A variety of industrial parks also make it a place where industries can easily park themselves for a promising future.

FROM DOWNTOWN LOFTS TO TREE-LINED SUBURBS

SPRINGFIELD’S NEIGHBORHOODS ————

W

hen real estate developer Harry Kissell created Ridgewood in the Country Club District through the 1920s, he was trying to create a sanctuary in which the well-to-do could cool their suburban heels away from the smoke and fog of the factory — and from the stodginess of East High Street and the Victorian mansions of South Fountain Avenue.

RETIREMENT LIVING

AFFORDABLE, ACCESSIBLE HOUSING FOR EVERYONE

———— ith quality retirement communities in good supply and a wide range of recreational and volunteer opportunities nearby, Greater Springfield and Clark County have become the location of choice for retirees looking for a full life at a great price.

W

But just as some people prefer disc golf to golf, we have a variety of tastes for where we like to live. The good news is that Kissell’s legacy and the legacies of developers before and since provide today’s area home buyers with a wide range of choices — and at a wide range in prices. Whether your dream home is a country estate situated on a few acres of land, an urban loft positioned in the center of downtown, a turn-of-thecentury renovation project, or a home in a tree-lined, close-knit neighborhood, Springfield’s rich inventory of homes will help you find what you desire at a competitive price. early one-half of Clark County’s population lives in our smaller cities and villages. If a small town or rural setting is what you are looking for, take a stroll down New Carlisle’s main street or take in the acres of farmland that surround South Charleston and you’ll see why so many of our residents call these areas home.

New Carlisle Clark County’s second largest city, with 6,000 residents, New Carlisle enjoys a vibrant downtown and is just minutes away from the I-70 / I-75 intersection — the “crossroads of America.”

Enon Once a bedroom community for Dayton, Enon, with its 2,400 residents has grown in its own right as the headquarters of Speedway LLC and the home of the Enon Apple Butter Festival.

South Charleston Few communities embrace their history like the home of the regionally known South Charleston Opera House and the zip code for many of the area’s farmers.

South Vienna Home of the national large-equipment auctioneers, Ritchie Brothers, and the South Vienna Corn Festival, the village of 400 residents embraces its agricultural roots. greaterspringfield.com

Amidst the handsome multi-colored stone work, keep an eye out for an owl that guards the property. The historic Bushnell Building, designed at the dawn of the 20th Century by the nationally known firm, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, underwent a major renovation recently, making space for new business while again preserving the past. With the help of the Turner Foundation, several downtown churches also prepared for the future by countering the effects of gravity and erosion.

TIDBITE FOR A TASTE of Springfield’s past, go to the Fountain on Main and order the chopped olive and nut sandwich on grilled wheat, a tribute to a much remembered downtown eatery, Jim’s Sandwich Shop.

FAMOUS FIGURES WITH SPRINGFIELD CONNECTIONS

Take a Statue Tour Downtown VISITORS WILL NOTICE A SERIES OF DOWNTOWN STATUES IN SPRINGFIELD. HERE ARE THE STORIES OF SOME.

O.S. KELLY stands on his Esplanade in front of the Courtyard Marriott. Kelly was the financial backer of William Whiteley, whose Champion reaper turned Springfield into an agri-business manufacturing mecca. GEN. GEORGE ROGERS CLARK looks west from the corner of Fountain Avenue and Main Street. Rogers had the unenviable task of trying to maintain an American claim over the thinly populated western frontier after the war for independence.

HARRY TOULMIN stands, pen in hand, across the street from the Bushnell Building. He was the patent attorney for the most famous pioneers in flight, the Wright Brothers.

A.B. GRAHAM, founder of 4-H, can be seen in a statue tucked

behind a building named for him at the southwest corner of Limestone and Columbia Streets. Graham was superintendent of the Springfield Township Schools where he persistently championed the cause of education to farm families.

TECUMSEH, legendary Shawnee leader, stands north of the

Springfield Museum of Art along Veterans Park Drive. Although a fierce warrior, he disdained the torture often practiced on frontier captives and tried in vain to assemble a coalition of Native American groups to resist the westward push of settlers.

DAVEY MOORE, the 1959 world featherweight champion, stands

along Limestone Street just south of the city’s downtown. Moore, who died days after losing a defense of his title, is celebrated in a Bob Dylan song. His funeral procession to Ferncliff Cemetery is the largest the city has ever seen.

FINE DINERS may want to try Cecil and Lime on Cecil St., or Mela Urban Bistro in the Marriott or the locally owned and operated Seasons Bistro, at 28 South Limestone Street, where the menu changes with the seasons.

CLARK STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WITTENBERG UNIVERSITY

Hometown Clark State Community College helped to pioneer two-year, post-high school education in Ohio. Its students, traditional and nontraditional, have more than 125 degree and certificate programs from which to choose. The college works hand in hand with local employers to create training and certificate programs tailored for local workforce needs.

Since 1845, Wittenberg University has set a standard of excellence both in liberal arts education and small college (now Division III) athletics. In more recent years, women’s field hockey and volleyball teams have begun to add to the powerhouse tradition in men’s football and basketball. Endowment of the Sarah Hirt Hagen Center for Civic and Urban Engagement has strengthened ties with Springfield. To serve the community more directly, the university is also bringing a liberal arts flavor to more career-oriented offerings, including a bachelor’s in nursing program, a criminal justice program and an accounting degree completion program.

The curriculum includes the new Advanced Manufacturing Program that focuses on welding, additive manufacturing, CNC, and Industrial Maintenance which was funded by a $2.5M grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

EXPANDING LOCAL HIGHER ED OPPORTUNITIES

CEDARVILLE UNIVERSITY Vibrant Cedarville University is a 20-minute drive south. Carrying a proud 125-year Christian tradition, it has established itself as a top-flight university with a wide range of offerings, with strength in the science and health fields. Cedarville’s Yellow Jackets are a longtime powerhouse in the Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference, but the university has even more pride in its celebration of Biblical truths.

ANTIOCH UNIVERSITY MIDWEST Antioch University Midwest, in nearby Yellow Springs, provides a convenient way for adults to complete their bachelor’s degrees or to tailor individualized master’s programs to fit their career plans. The university’s Ph.D. in Leadership and Change has established itself as a program that fits its time, and online and overseas studies provide flexibility that makes it possible to fit meaningful learning into the context of busy lives.

ANTIOCH COLLEGE In the spirit of its first president, Horace Mann, Antioch College in Yellow Springs provides a rigorous liberal arts education with the belief that scholarship and life experience are strengthened when linked, that diversity in all its manifestations is a fundamental component of excellence in education, and that authentic social and community engagement is vital for those who strive to win victories for humanity.

URBANA UNIVERSITY - A BRANCH CAMPUS OF FRANKLIN UNIVERSITY Urbana University, 15 miles north of Springfield, is a private, liberal arts university situated on a small campus in downtown Urbana. Founded in 1850, the university’s small campus provides more opportunities for students to develop strong relationships with faculty and staff. Its Division II sports program is a popular choice for athletes who aspire to play top-level college sports.

FESTIVE FUN

Everyone for

Festivals always mean family fun, and Clark County contributes at least its fair share. Our longest-running festival – the Summer Arts Festival – is also our most recognized and loved. This free, month-long celebration of music and fun has been taking place between the scenic cliffs along Buck Creek for nearly 50 years and draws attendees from across the region and state.

———— n what might be likened to a modern observance of the summer solstice, rows of lawn chairs start appearing shortly after sunup between the limestone cliffs of Veterans Park from mid-June through mid-July. It’s the time-honored method for reserving a prime spot for that evening’s performance at the Springfield Summer Arts Festival.

I

The admission-free festival has something for everyone — from those whose tastes run from ribs to Rachmaninoff. Tribute bands annually attract the likes of Parrotheads and Deadheads. Homegrown talents John Legend and Griffin House might drop by. Staples include the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and musicals showcasing local and touring talent. All play out as the sun sets on the beautiful and wellappointed Veterans Park Amphitheater. springfieldartscouncil.org

GREATER SPRINGFIELD COMMUNITY GUIDE 2018-2019

———— ach Labor Day, history lovers and re-enactors from across the country migrate to George Rogers Clark Park for the Fair at New Boston. Held near the grounds of the Battle of Peckuwe, the largest Revolutionary War battle fought west of the Allegheny Mountains, the event transports attendees to the 18th century, where tinsmiths, blacksmiths and tatters display their wares between taverns, and ruffians do their best to avoid detection by constables on patrol. The regular firing of the 6-pound cannon near the stockade helps moderns hear echoes of the Ohio past while General George Rogers Clark patrols the grounds.
