SPECIAL EDITION: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ISSUE

INSIDE VIEWS

Prime Ohio II Industrial Park

After nearly 20 years of planning, design, and construction, PrimeOhio II Industrial Park is now complete. PrimeOhio II, the 200 acre, $9.5 Million Industrial Park located adjacent to Interstate 70 is open for business and is beginning to welcome its first tenants. This new industrial park provides large-site, shovelready development sites for the Greater Springfield community and fills a much needed void for the State of Ohio as well. Sites with this proximity to an interstate with all utilities on site are in short supply. However, the demand for these kinds of sites is increasing. Development is off to a good start as two new tenants have started construction.

Love’s

Love’s Travel Stops and Country Stores has broken ground on its 20 acre site at PrimeOhio II Industrial Park. This site, one of the largest in the chain’s footprint, will include two fast food restaurants, car and truck fueling, truck parking, and truck tire repair facilities. This travel center’s strategic location will serve the 60,000 daily travelers on I-70, plus all the 14 firms located in PrimeOhio Corporate Park, the Clark County Fairgrounds area and PrimeOhio II. The travel Center is expected to open by the end of 2016.

Beyond the Horizon At this year’s Chamber of Greater Springfield Annual Meeting, we celebrated 10 years of accomplishments, as well as highlighted some of the successes of 2015.

When I arrived at the Chamber in 2006 we had some work to do on the culture of the organization. I found a team that was struggling to believe in itself, and was simply going through the motions. We had to change that, and fast! The first thing we did as a team was read a book by Mike Abrashoff called It’s Your Ship. It is a true story about a Navy Captain who took the worst performing ship in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet at the time, The USS Benfold, and made it the best in just 2 short years. As our chamber team moved forward we knew that each member of our team played a critical role in the chamber’s success or failure in helping our members succeed, as well as the greater Springfield community. The next book we read was Jim Collins’ Good to Great. That book simply changed the way our chamber team operates today. We changed our focus to getting each team member on the bus and into the right seat. We set a vision of going from where we were at that time, to good, then to great! We have never looked back as a chamber team, and we continue to get better each year we are doing this important work because of those two books. My favorite quote on vision is from former GE CEO Jack Welch, who says, “Good business leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision, and relentlessly drive it to completion.” That is what this team is doing every day with what they have been given stewardship of during this time at the chamber. Here are some examples of the amazing things that can happen over ten years when a team comes together around a vision of seeking excellence in what they do every day: • $9M PrimeOhio II Industrial Park • $3M National Road Commons Downtown Central Park

VOLUME 5, 2015

2016 “Big Dreamer” Caro Bayley Bosca IN 2009 THE GREATER SPRINGFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BEGAN COMMEMORATING OUR COMMUNITY’S HISTORIC LEADERS AND LUMINARIES WITH THE “BIG DREAMER” BANNER SERIES. THE DIVERSE GROUP OF PAST HONOREES INCLUDES DICK KUSS, ASA BUSHNELL, LILLIAN GISH, A. B. GRAHAM, JIM MCGREGOR, JOHN LEGEND AND DAVEY MOORE. THIS YEAR WE HONOR A TRUE PIONEER IN HER FIELD – CARO BAYLEY BOSCA.

“Aviation history will remember Caro Bayley Bosca as a pioneer who flew with the Women’s Airforce Service Pilots in World War II, set a world altitude record in the early 1950s and had a daring spirit that made her a star in aerobatic shows. After the war, she joined a group of other former WASPs in Florida to pursue an aviation career, learning to be a mechanic, then exploring aerobatic flying and signing on with various flying shows, including Jess Bristow’s All Women’s Air Show. She became the International Women’s Aerobatic Champion on Jan. 3, 1951, in her Pitts Special biplane, Black Magic, and the same day she flew to 30,203 feet in a Piper Super Cruiser, setting a world altitude record for class II aircraft. Later that year, she crossed paths in Florida with Springfielder Orsino Hugo Bosca, of the Hugo Bosca Co., and they married. Active in women’s and social clubs and in women’s aviation organizations, Bosca served on the board of the International Women’s Air and Space Museum, as president of the WASP alumni association, and belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association. It is my distinct pleasure to add Caro Bayley Bosca to this exclusive club!” John Landess on Caro Bayley Bosca
