Bomber wins right to third appeal Saturday, 24 October 2009 A convicted bomber who has waged a 17-year fight to clear his name has been given a date for his unprecedented third appeal hearing. Lawyers for Christy Walsh (45) will seek to overturn the guilty verdict during a three-day challenge listed for next February. Following confirmation of the new hearing Mr Walsh said: “I've no doubt in my mind I'm going in with a clear winning shot.” The painter from west Belfast, who is now based in Jordanstown, was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment in 1992 for possession of a coffee jar bomb. He has campaigned ever since to try to prove there was a miscarriage of justice in his case. Two previous appeals, including one brought by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, have already been dismissed. An earlier hearing heard that files held on Mr Walsh revealed a top paramilitary was detained at the same time as him. His lawyers said the discovered a note confirming a second man was stopped on the same day in June 2001 as he was allegedly found in possession of the device. Details were found during an inspection in February of Mr Walsh's records held at the Forensic Science Northern Ireland headquarters, judges were told. Mr Walsh claimed the judicial panel who will decide his case were keen to resolve it. “All the academics talk about transitional justice. This is transitional justice in action,” he said.
