Brief/Session/Document Title Laying the Foundations / Creating the Field (Dissertation) Brief Produce an educational publication based on Key Modernists who set the foundations of Graphic Design. Create a set of educational publications aimed to inform creative students about their modernist heritage. The publication should work in a lecture-based environment as well as be able to take away and easily transportable. An type and layout investigation into editorial aimed at the educational sector to inform students. This project will involve paper stock, book binding, type and layout and professional standard print aimed at informing students as well as translating print based deliverables onto the web. Background / Considerations Who were the key modernist thinkers of the 20th centaury and what impact did they have on the field of graphic design. Who started it all off and what where the manifesto’s that they lived by? ‘… Out of their sweat, movements sprang up – futurism, Dadaism, De Stijl, constructivism, New typography. Their ideas clashed and converged to form the modern foundation from which the graphic design industry emerged’ Graphic Design Theory – Helen Armstrong Graphic Design students are aware of Modernism but it’s usually up to them to pursue the information about them on their own. Establish engaging texts from some of the key modernist thinkers and produce a print based deliverable to inform students about what they did and why to give them a sense of history and foundation. Keeping to a college print budget to produce a high amount of publications, which is cost effective. What do students what to know about modernism, yes its what started it off but what elements within it is the most relevant to todays practice.
