The influence of Technology on Typography and Layout

Dissertation Simon Jones Tutor Rationale (200 words) A practice focused on Editorial, Branding & Identity across print & web primarily for the Cultural & Retail Sector I intend to produce a body of work that outlines my skills as a designer focused on practical & problem solving skills. My projects will focus on utilising my wide range of skills to show my flexibility as a designer. I will predominantly focus on Editorial & Branding around various sectors of industry but mainly Retail, Arts & Culture and Music to allow my portfolio to reflect where I am interested in working when I finish. My practice will be driven by process, technique & problem solving through various formats showing my interest for Typography & Layout.

I am going to Improve my Design for Web & interactivity as I feel this is something I can still clearly address and I feel that It will add much more to my skill set.

I am going to explore printing processes to a high level this year to show my ability to work reflect the ability to use high spec printing within my projects.

I am going to collaborate this year to show my collaborations skills.

I am going to work with live briefs to show that I can work with clients on a project.

Brief 1 Aperture Redesign (skills driven)

Editorial - Digital & Printed material focussing on the structure of a magazine as well as digital & web capabilities like interactivity and digital constraints. To be exhibited on the Web, bookstores and Exhibitions.

Brief 2 Clothing Company

Branding & Identity – A type & image based investigation on retail with a focus on Print for fashion. I am going to produce a range of Clothing & printed matter under a new clothing label that emphasises printed quality to be distributed through web & retail.

Brief 3 Reaction (Live Brief)

Branding & Promotion - A type & image based investigation on electronic and experimental house music with a focus on print and promotion. I am going to produce an image for a new night with a range of promotional material and an online interface.

Brief 4 ISTD Imbalance (Research driven)

Research Driven – A typographic investigation on politics with a focus on print & delivery. I am going to produce a series of typographic screen prints outlining the imbalance in the south African political system.

Brief 06 Natural Gas Investments Produce a logo and stationary range for the company NGI, focusing on printed quality and typographic clarity while still fitting with their corporate image.

Brief 07 Produce a Zine for Leeds Print Fair Use some of my own photography work and produce a printed photographic zine to outline my travels in a specific country TUTOR’S Signature STUDENT’S Signature
