are thankful for the strength and unity of our community. We honor the courage of those who have faced unimaginable challenges and the generosity of those who have offered their support. Let’s give thanks and appreciate the little wins, the helping hands, and the hope that guides us forward.

As Bikers, we know one thing to be true: LIFE CAN CHANGE IN AN INSTANT ! One moment everything is familiar, and the next, everything is different. It’s a reminder to cherish every day, love one another, and savor every moment! Also, a special thank you to our Veterans: Your service and sacrifices have given us the freedom we enjoy today.

This bike is my VW powered bike that I traveled All over the Europe down to south Africa ok n it has over a half a million miles on it! And, a 1600cc motor from a Volkswagen in it I built this bike in 1971&72 ~Pappy

Pappy's Ridin'

Well I'm sick of Michigan, some guys I still can't stand to be around here and I have never liked winters here. Try riding in the snow!

I'm heading back to San Diego, got biker friends there still, and I'm going back to work at Rex's Speed Shop. Might even get my old beach shack back.

I'm trying to ride part of Rt 66, watched it on tv back a couple of years ago and it looks like fun to me. Getting a USA map and lay out a route so I don't get lost. It's going to be a 2500 mile trip, farther than from Seattle to here but I have plenty of time and money (remember the 5&10 I hit in Mexico for 25 grand). Sending my tool box to the Speed Shop, it was my Dads 1949 Snap-On since it won't fit on the Flatty LOL.

It's Monday and a few of us are at the Halfway House for breakfast and a goodbye thing! I'm heading west on I 94 to 31 south, I have tuned her up put another tooth on the motor sprocket and a new rear chian, she is running smooth at 70mph so we will have a great trip going to stop for gas every 100 miles just because i can.

Dusty is going to take care of the house while I'm gone, he will take good care of the place while I'm gone not a doper don't even smoke!

I might even get to stop at the Ohio rendezvous, it's this time of year. Did that a few years ago, had a blacksmith shop I could take on a trailer made knives and throwing hatchets, that's an old time thing from the 1800's. Anyway back to the trip, Flatty is running great under my stock air cleaner is a brand new 2" S U carb it has woke her up and lots smoother too. I'm now on 31 south i'm going to stop at a couple of brothers place's on 31,

I have the map marked so i won't get lost? Hell I have been lost before. Went over 100 miles before the first gas stop getting 31 mpg woo hoo! At 65 or 70 mph with a windshield and all my gear. It's a great sunny day and I'm going to try for 300 miles a day. Stopped at a brother's place for a smoke break. I'm running clean on this trip, Charly and I go way back in time, he is a higher up at his shop a master machinist but likes working nites NO bosses at nite so had a short stop there got a good buzz on heading for the no tell motel, about an hour away and it's supper time!! Well I'm at the restaurant ribeye yummy and a cutey waiting on me she might be friendly? We shall see. Well she knows my room number and she is little so would fit good behind me and heck i would be happy to take her along we can only hope. She did and wants to go to St. Louis, Mo with me, she hates this town it's almost as small as she is she is 72 lbs 4'9" tall and a sweet girl you know i will treat her right, well it's morning and we are heading for breakfast and to gas her up what happened last nite is none of y'alls bisnis but it was awesome! See you in St.Louis, MO ride safe ride free your brother in CHRIST Pappy (remember this was in 1966) a lot has happened since then.

“The Shop” 2nd Annual Benefit Run for Homeless Veterans

On September 21st I planned on going to a charity event in Spartanburg, SC at “The Shop” at 521 New Cut Road. I had been there before, and had a great time for a good cause.

Established in 1974, “The Shop” is a social club with a HD motorcycle habit. They are proud to do local charity work, and are avid supporters of the Safe Homes Coalition, Mobile Meals, and others.

The event started at 8:00AM at “The Shop” with a free breakfast. The poker run would take up the afternoon hours, then it would end back at “The Shop” with food, music, an auction, and a raffle.

I left home about 8:30AM heading south to I85. After filling up at the local gas station, I entered I85 heading south towards Spartanburg. I veered to the right to get onto I85 Business. After a few miles, I exited, and turned left onto New Cut Road. “The Shop” was a short way on the right. I could see all the chrome shining in the bright morning sun. I had to park in the back of the adjoining grassy field. The front lot was completely filled.

I parked next to a US Marine veteran. We talked for a short while, and then took a stack of “Carolina Chrome” magazines out of my pack,

and walked into the building. I placed the stack of magazines on the table after giving my donation. This ride was their 2nd Annual Homeless Veteran Benefit Run. “Warriors Once Again” is a transitional residence for homeless veterans in Spartanburg. It’s a place where veterans can get the help they need when they are homeless. The home gives them a place to live while helping them with their issues so that they can eventually get back into the community. It’s a program designed to restore dignity and regenerate vitality.

For a $20.00 donation, you can draw a card out of the box at “The Shop”, then another at “C&C Thunder” in Cowpens, SC, then to “Red’s Watering Hole” in Gaffney; a stop at the “Palmetto Patriots Veteran’s Home” in Gaffney to visit with the veterans there, then stop at “Spartan Motorcycles” in Spartanburg; then to “The Springs” in Boiling Springs, SC; From there to “Grill 221” or “295 Food and Spirits” in Roebuck, SC. The run will end back at “The Shop” for awards, live music, BBQ, an auction, and a rifle raffle.

I walked around greeting old friends like “Squid” and “Cowboy”. There was a large group from the Armored Saints Motorcycle Ministry in their purple garb. I always enjoy talking with them. There was also a group of Chrome Divas from Gaffney. Those women really get around; they ride everywhere!

I walked through the kitchen to get back into the clubhouse. They still had a little breakfast eggs and sausage left. I noticed a large container of broken eggs on the counter. They scrambled a lot of eggs earlier.

Again, I was impressed with “The Shop” and its members. Everybody I spoke with was friendly. The club-

house is split with half set up as a club room with a bar and tables with pictures and awards on the walls, and the other half is set up as a small shop to repair any bikes that need it. There is also a covered picnic area in the back. It’s everything a clubhouse should be.

At 9:30, we were all, called out front to a motorcycle with a large American Flag on it. We all said the “Pledge of Allegiance” before one of the preachers in the group said the pre-ride prayer.

At 10:00AM, the bikes started to leave heading to C&C Thunder. They didn’t leave as one large group. There were many smaller groups heading in the same direction.

I went to leave, and when I did, I saw a man on another Victory Motorcycle. I had to stop and talk with him. I learned that his bike was a 2005 Victory Vegas 8-Ball. He bought it new in 2005. I also learned that he recently moved down to Lyman, SC from New York. I hope we run into each other at a future event. I’ll watch for him.

I left with one of the small groups heading north on New Cut Road. I veered to the right to go back the way I came. I got onto I85, and was home before noon.

It was a great way to spend a Saturday morning meeting old friends and making new ones too. I’m going to watch their Facebook page to follow their events. I’ll go again. It was fun!

Afterwards, I checked “The Shop” Facebook page, and learned that the benefit run was a complete success. It was because of the total community effort from everyone who attended, and local business donations. Hundreds of bikes were on the run that raised $25,000.00 for “Warriors Once Again” (Almost a 20% increase over last year’s).

FRESH PANTS DAY!

Road trip…. Barring “I love you’s” from the wife or the kids, there are no words a biker would rather hear.

My friends and I take many, and I mean MANY road trips around the country and even into Canada. During most of these trips, we are on the road for between five and fourteen days.

With very limited space available for the things we need, bikers must be creative when deciding what to pack and not to pack. First aid items, toiletries, and tools are a necessity, while snacks and water are close behind.

What is on the bottom of my list, and the lists of those I travel with, is an item we use every day but can go multiple days without changing. I am talking about pants.

Now, on a road trip, there are clothing items I am going to change every day. Clean socks, underwear, and a new shirt are things I cannot go without each morning, but I wear the same jeans for three days before unpacking a fresh pair.

After riding in the heat, rain, and dust for three days, my brothers and I have come to appreciate something we all refer to as “Fresh Pants Day.” When you fold up that dirty pair of road grimy, nasty, smelly pants and shove them in a laundry bag, then slide into a new pair, it just makes your day a little nicer. The small stuff is a blessing.

On the morning of September 27th, 2024, Hurricane Helene rolled through the southeast, leaving in her wake the worst path of destruction in decades. Greenwood county of South Carolina was one of the hardest hit areas. People’s homes were destroyed, tens of thousands have had no power for days, and taking a bath has become a horrible struggle.

As I sit in my office at work typing this devotion, Donna and I are beginning our 10th day with no electricity or running water. That being said, except for the two times we showered in my dad’s garage, (the only place he has power and water) we have been taking baths with bottled water as often as we could.

We are currently recycling clothes so I have been treating this power outage as I would a road trip. Not shaving, bathing when I could, and wearing my pants for three days. I arrived at work somewhere between 4:00 and 4:30 this morning for a sponge bath with hot water when I could be alone in the building, as no one would care to see a fat dude taking a bath in a sink.

I brought my motorcycle luggage in with me containing toiletries, a shirt, socks, drawers, and yes, fresh pants. I even brought my clippers to shave my head.

Today will be a good one. My family is healthy and happy, my techs are doing a great job of

restoring people’s phone and internet services, I have a honey bun and a cup of coffee, and I have on those fresh pants.

Yep, it’s Fresh Pants Day! Small things, but full of blessings. Thank you, God!

The Apostle Paul spent most of his adult life being beaten, thrown in jail, and he was eventually killed for spreading the gospel. He knew what it was like to suffer, but he also understood how important those small blessings were. A bite to eat, water to drink, and maybe, just maybe, fresh clothes.

When life kicks you in the teeth and you are down and out, look around and take note of those who are worse off than you, count your many blessings, and make every effort to thank God for the small things in your life you are blessed with. Keep the important stuff in perspective.

You will be glad you did! The words of Paul…

We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

DR. Dilligaf,

My twin brother and I decided to start riding. I've got a Sportster, and he HAD one too! Recently he decided to trade it in for a Fat Boy because he thought it was cool in Terminator 2. Anyways, I wanted to go try it out, but he said NO! He says it's really different and he's not even sure it's right for him. What's your opinion? -Sophia

Sophia,

There is something wrong with your brother. You said that he is your twin, but how you can you be sure? Were you there, do you have witnesses, and are they reliable?

If you are licensed and you are sober, I will let you ride almost any bike I own, and I don't even know you. If your brother doesn't even know if the bike is right for him and he's already bought it, his judgement is already suspect. But at heart, I am always the diplomat. So a compromise will likely allow you to maintain this coveted twin relationship, which the rest of us are envious of. If you want to test ride a Fatboy go to the dealership and ride one. If you like it and he remains wishy-washy make him an offer on his, and he can go back to his Sportster. To close I might suggest some genetic testing for the both of you, it's always interesting to see where our different and alike traits come from. I think your brother leans toward your mother's side.

Can we throw candy this year while on a toy or vets' parade? If not, why? And "what if" we still did?

Anonymous

Anonymous,

I see that you are a bargain shopper. Trying to get three answers to questions and all. In today's economy that has to be respected. You have come to the right place. Here all answers are free and they occasionally have value.

I will address your inquiries in order. I don't know if you can throw or not. If you have the physical abilities and want to, you are being asked not to do it. As to the why, the answers are all common sense, but alas that is not near as common as it used to be.

Kids dart into traveled streets to retrieve candy. People who are driving cages in proximity to the ride routes are not as cooperative and patient as they have been in the past and it presents a challenge and a hazard. I think this is a time when proactive TRUMPS complacency and a wait being and see attitude.

As far as the what if question is concerned, I will leave it at this. I haven't seen anyone go to jail for it, but if I saw someone do it and a child or other spectator was hurt. Or if it caused a bike to go down the what ifs would be quite serious.

~Dr. Dilligaf
