CCIB Poker Run

On Saturday August 10th, the Cleveland County Independent Bikers (CCIB) held a Poker Run at the CCIB Clubhouse on Washburn Switch Road in Shelby, NC. All the proceeds go to the assets of the CCIB so that they can do charitable things in the future.

The registration started at 2:00PM with the first bike out at 3:00PM, and the last bike in by 7:00PM for bike games, and a food truck. The stops were some of the usual ones with the last stop back at the CCIB clubhouse.

Later, at 8:00PM, the band “Southern Born Band” would be rockin’ on the bandstand behind the clubhouse.

I arrived at about 2:00PM after traveling back roads to the clubhouse. It was a beautiful hot summer afternoon. When I arrived, there were a few bikes parked in front of the clubhouse.

I walked in, and placed a stack of Carolina Chrome magazines on the bar along with my donation. I talked with some of the CCIB members who were sitting there. It’s always good to catch up with old friends.

I walked outside to see who was arriving. There were many bikers riding in – some individually, and others in groups. Then a large group of bikers rode in, and parked in the lot next to the clubhouse. It was the Windjammers. They always come to the CCIB events, and likewise the CCIB members go to the Windjammer’s events.

Everybody was laughing and talking like they hadn’t seen each other for a long time. These types of events are good for the biker community. They help everybody get acquainted. New members feel at home surrounded by friends.

I spent some time talking with “Radar”. We used to work together a few lifetimes ago. I learned that he retired a few years ago. I guess that we are all getting older – one day at a time!

Then we all were called together for a few words from Mike, the pastor of the Full Throttle Biker Church in Bostic, NC. Afterwards, I walked across the road to get pictures of the group when they left. The sun was in the right place to take pictures too. The command to start the bikes was given, and the silence of the afternoon was changed to the roar of Harley Davidsons. It only took a few minutes for all to leave.

I said good-by to all who stayed behind, and headed home. It was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

RICKY’S MOTORCYCLE

Back in 2001, I was driving along South Main Street in beautiful Greenwood, South Carolina on my way home from work. As I approached a traffic light, I noticed a guy on a BEAUTIFUL black and blue motorcycle just ahead of me making a right turn. Since I was in no real hurry, I also took a right and followed him. My hope was to get a better look at the motorcycle.

He rode through the next traffic light and then made a right turn into a medical park near our local hospital. I pulled in beside him and stepped from my vehicle.

We talked bikes for a few minutes, and I invited him on a couple of local rides, not thinking I would ever see him again.

Wrong! God had a plan…

From that day forward he and I have been almost inseparable. We have taken road trips together, our families celebrate holidays at each other’s homes, and he has been by my side during some terrible times. I won’t mention his name because he would be mad at me. I will just call him “JD”.

Now, on to my story.

JD is one of the most giving people I have ever known. Among other things, he has given away his used cars, paid for people’s groceries, bought computers for schools in Third World countries, and even given away more than a few motorcycles.

I have another good brother named Ricky.

Ricky was in a Contemporary Christian band that had played at some of our events. He was also a member of our church, and because he had one son in college and another one in high school,

he was active with the youth group. Ricky had become a regular at some of our Bikers for Christ events, but he did not have a motorcycle. Since he had a young family, Ricky did not have a lot of extra cash.

One Sunday afternoon, JD called me and announced he had purchased a new motorcycle. He wanted to know If I knew anyone who may need his old black and blue one. Now he doesn’t actually “give” things away, he wanted five dollars for the bike. After a week of praying about it with my friend Randy, we decided to bless Ricky with JD’s old motorcycle.

The next Saturday morning, I loaded the motorcycle on my trailer, picked Randy up, and drove to Ricky’s house with the bike. When we arrived, we called Ricky out into the yard, and asked him if he liked it. He did.

“Well,” Randy said, “you need to buy it!”

“Man, I can’t afford that!” Ricky responded.

Then I asked him, “Have you got five dollars in your pocket?”

Ricky could not believe it! He was overwhelmed!

That’s when he told us about his prayer the night before…

Ricky said, as he was driving home, he was praying for God’s direction in his life. He figured he would be able to buy a motorcycle in roughly three years when at least one of his kids was out of college. He knew what he wanted, but he needed to know if motorcycle ministry was where he was supposed to be. He asked God to make it clear to him.

Then we showed up at his house the next morning with that bike. WOW!

He handed me five bucks and I gave him the signed title.

That was a little over ten years ago, and Ricky has since become a powerful messenger for God through the ministry of Bikers for Christ. Because of him, our chapter has grown immensely, and many people have come to know the Lord Jesus Christ.

If I had not followed JD that day in 2001, Ricky may not be where he is today in his walk with God. Even ten years before I met Ricky, God’s plan was in motion.

Also, Ricky didn’t pray a selfish prayer for a motorcycle, he prayed for God to give him clear direction. God answered that prayer.

God puts people in our paths for a purpose. Maybe it’s for our benefit, or maybe it’s for them, we may never know the reason. Just be sure that you never take a chance encounter with another person for granted. It may change someone’s life for the better. Also, when you pray, make sure that God’s will is the focus, and not selfish desires for worldly things.

Proverbs 3:5-6 New Living Translation

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart;do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Dr. DILLIGAF's Hurricane Joaquin Adventure

It's Hurricane season in SC and the editor asked if I would share my experienceriding in the weather of Hurricane Joaquin, a Category 4 storm that battered the Bahamas. It battered the Bahamas for two days with devastating winds flooding and a strong tidal surge while deluging SC for four days with high winds, seas and unprecedented rain amounts for some areas. Many received 15-20 inches. Those are the facts of the weather, let me tell you the facts of being hardheaded, tenacious and a bit of an adventurer. All of my adult life I have had issues with people being non-committal. You have friends like that I know. You make a plan, and they say that they're in and then "boom", there is always something that comes up and they can't make it. Oft times leaving you holding the bag. I have to take a moment to

say that I have some close friends with whom this not an issue. But the bi-product of previous experiences is that I put my money where my mouth is and I show up when I say I will. I sometimes say that you can count on three things in Life. You can count on your fingers and toes, you can count on Jesus to save you from hell, and you can count on me to do what I say that I will do. Now having said that I must issue a disclaimer. I'm getting old and this may change, not my attitude, just my memory. I might forget to show up.

We had planned to be at MBBW for the second weekend with friends who graciously accommodated us in Garden City. So, on Thursday October 1, 2015, in spite of Hurricane warnings I rode my Street Glide to Garden City. I found it odd that the only other motorcycles

on the road were headed in the opposite direction. Furthermore, upon arrival there was nothing parked at our abode but cages. (for you newbies that means automobiles)

Now, I confess that I have trailered motorcycles to rallies before. That is primarily because I have other irons in the fire to be tended that require a truck. After all there is only so much that you can carry on a bike. I draw the limit with lumber and large power tools. Collards and oysters aren't a problem if there is someone out there with some when I ride by. But I didn't need a truck, so I rode a motorcycle to a motorcycle rally. The given name of said rally. You guessed it Hurricane Ally Rally.

To make a short story long I'll get to the point, I rode to dinner, I rode to the drug store to buy games to play because all of the regular establishments were closed, and we needed to entertain ourselves. I rode to see what was open and what was closed. Basically, just like any other time, any excuse is a good one. The Beach was however not devoid of other motorcycles though. Everyone who had trailered their bike to the beach to show off their big front tires and wide tail ends were still there holding out for a trophy because attendance was down. You can win best in show when you're the only entry.

On Saturday October 3, a day short of the official ending of the Rally, officials began encouraging people to leave Garden City for higher ground. The causeway had flooded at high tide the previous day and it was expected to be covered again on Sunday, possibly lasting until the following Thursday. Well, we were enjoying ourselves watching the waves crest the dunes and flooding the lower floors of buildings while we played our games from Walgreens. We wound up staying where we were, after all we were having a good time indoors and the power was on. The good food, the friendship and fellowship were worth sticking around for. We couldn't allow the effects of a hurricane that wasn't even "OURS" to slow our roll. Actually, I was still the only one rolling. (I have pictures).

The following day Sunday when we got up things had deteriorated pretty badly, and we began the discussion of staying or leaving. Neither had many pros and both had lots of cons. (like my circle of friends). I worked in the disaster restoration industry and my wife was a supervisor for UPS. We called our employers, and they begged us to try and get home. We decided as a group that we would leave together, although one couple had left earlier (they heeded the warnings) and we devised a plan. I need to add at this point that I am from the area. I am an Horriginal. I have been riding around Horry County all of my life, my family has been there for centuries, and I know my way around. It was decided that I would lead a procession of two four-wheel drive pickups followed by my wife's low-slung Pontiac GXP.

The theory that we concocted was that if I raised my air ride all the way up, five and a half inches, that I could lead across the flooded

Causeway slowly and the trucks could follow me creating a wake or low area that my wife could drive in. All should work well if we didn't stop. The hair brained scheme worked flawlessly, and we were on the landward side of the beach in short order. We didn't know that our struggle was just beginning. The only way out from there was 544 through Socastee. We barely made it past the campus of Coastal Carolina as that area was flooded as badly as Garden City.

After negotiating our way to Conway, we quickly discovered that all routes out of the city towards Columbia were flooded and impossible to pass. My five and a half inches of air ride wouldn't work in five feet of water. Not dismayed by the naysayers I said that I knew a way and my peers reluctantly followed me. I took us down the backroads of my childhood, often riding in twelve inches of water, feathering the clutch on the bike to keep from swamping it as I pushed through the water. The only way that I could tell where

the road was in a lot of areas was to look down through the water, which was remarkably clear, to see the yellow centerline. Since no other drivers were on the road that was pretty much my only concern. As stated before, stopping in the flood waters was not an option because of swamping the GXP.

We eventually arrived safely in Hartsville, SC to rent the only available room in town after seven hours of travelling. That is normally a two-hour trip. We averaged 14 miles an hour. All of my friends expressed dis-belief when I told them that I had a smile on my face for the entire time. After all, you don't get a chance have the Hurricane spot punched on your man card that often. I'll go ahead and boast and tell you. I did not learn my lesson and my card looks like a schoolbook with a three-hole punch. Word to your Mom and dem. Peace Out.
