The Legacy of Dr. Mar tin Luther King Jr

Black History

Tribute to James Earl Jones: A Legacy of Resonance, Power, and Grace

On the stage and screen, few voices are as recognizable, commanding, and influential as that of James Earl Jones. With his passing, we reflect on the life of a man who not only shaped the world of entertainment but also became a symbol of perseverance, dignity, and resilience in the African American community.

Born on January 17, 1931, in Arkabutla, Mississippi, James Earl Jones had humble beginnings, marked by struggles that shaped his personal and professional life. Raised by his grandparents after his father left, Jones faced a major challenge early on—he developed a debilitating stutter as a child. For years, he was almost mute, struggling to express himself in a world that didn’t always seem to listen.

However, it was his high school teacher who encouraged him to embrace speaking, helping him discover the power of his voice through poetry and reading aloud. This was the beginning of a transformation that would lead Jones to become one of the most prolific actors of his generation.

After attending the University of Michigan, Jones pursued acting in New York City, studying under renowned acting teachers and making his Broadway debut in 1957. His deep, resonant voice began to captivate audiences, and by the 1960s, Jones had solidified his place in theater history with his performance in Shakespeare’s Othello and other landmark productions.

Jones’ film career took off in the 1970s with a groundbreaking

role as Jack Jefferson in The Great White Hope, a film that earned him an Academy Award nomination and showcased his immense talent. However, it was in 1977 that Jones’ voice would be immortalized forever when he became the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars.

Despite the overwhelming success, Jones remained grounded and committed to portraying characters that reflected the dignity and complexities of Black life. He was a trailblazer in a time when opportunities for African American actors were limited.

A Spotlight on Rising Young Leader, Zaila Avant-garde: Breaking Barriers and Making History

At just 14 years old, Zaila Avant-garde became a symbol of hope, brilliance, and determination when she won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. This historic victory made Zaila the first African American contestant to win in the spelling bee’s nearly 100-year history, placing her name alongside other trailblazers in the fight for representation and excellence in education.

Born in Harvey, Louisiana, Zaila’s talents extend far beyond the world of spelling. In fact, her victory was just one of many accolades this young prodigy has achieved. Zaila is an accomplished basketball player who holds several Guinness World Records for

her ball-handling skills, including the most bounces of four basketballs simultaneously. Her extraordinary athleticism and dedication to learning have made her a role model for young African Americans across the country.

Zaila’s journey to the top wasn’t easy. Like many young Black girls, she faced the challenge of navigating spaces where representation was minimal. Yet, with the support

of her family and her unrelenting passion for learning, Zaila pushed forward, studying words with the same intensity she applied to perfecting her basketball dribbling. Her victory in the Spelling Bee is not only a personal achievement but a victory for representation in fields where African American children

are often underrepresented. Zaila’s success is a powerful reminder that young African Americans can and do excel in a wide range of disciplines when given the opportunity and support. Since her win, Zaila has used her platform to encourage other young people to pursue their dreams and embrace education. She has expressed her hopes of attending Harvard University one day, and she continues to pursue excellence in both academics and athletics.

When You Shouldn’t Ignore Stomach Pain

These symptoms could be a sign something more serious is going on

Everyone experiences stomach pain at some point in their lives. Most of the time it’s not serious and can be managed at home with over-the-counter medicines or by improving diet with additional fiber and increasing the daily amount of water intake. However, some symptoms are important to keep an eye out for, as they can indicate a serious health condition.

“We always look for alarm symptoms in gastroenterol -

ogy,” said Albert Ross, MD, gastroenterologist with Digestive Health Institute, a Pinnacle GI Partner. “These are symptoms that always raise a red flag and shouldn’t be ignored. They include unexplained weight loss, any sign of bleeding from the GI track, and severe pain.”

Unexplained Weight Loss

While many Americans would enjoy losing a couple of pounds without dieting or exercise, this

can be a symptom that something else is going on.

“If you are losing weight without trying, something is wrong,” said Dr. Ross.

Sudden weight loss can be a symptom of peptic ulcers, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or colorectal cancer.

From Drab to Fab: Ways To Give Your Salon a Makeover

Would you describe your salon as stuck in the past, boring, or just not quite up to par with your competitors? If so, then it may be time for a makeover! A fresh, modern salon can attract new clients and keep current patrons coming back for more. Take your space from drab to fab with these ways to give your salon a makeover.

Apply a Fresh Coat of Paint

Start by updating the most obvious feature of your salon—the walls. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for any space, and your salon is no exception. Consider using a color scheme that reflects your brand and creates a welcoming atmosphere. You could also add some texture or patterns to create visual interest throughout your salon.

Change the Flooring

Is your floor scuffing easily and looking worn out? Consider installing durable and easy-to-clean flooring, like epoxy flake. There are some im -

portant things to know about epoxy flake flooring, such as the fact that it is durable, easy to clean, and comes in various colors and styles. These aspects make epoxy flake flooring the perfect option for high-traffic areas like salons. Other great choices for salon flooring include vinyl, tile, and hardwood.

Create a Relaxing Waiting Area

No one enjoys sitting in an uncomfortable chair, browsing outdated magazines while waiting for their appointment. Take the opportunity to revamp your waiting area and create a relaxing space for your clients. Add comfortable seating options, such as plush armchairs or cozy so -

fas, and provide some entertainment like books or tablets for guests to use while they wait.

Upgrade Your Equipment

Outdated and malfunctioning equipment can be a major turn-off for clients. It may also affect the quality of your services. Consider investing in new and upgraded equipment to improve your efficiency and enhance the client experience. These upgrades could include new styling chairs, shampoo bowls, hair dryers, and more.

Revamp Your Lighting

Do your eyes feel strained after a long day of work in your salon? It may be time to upgrade your lighting. Good lighting is essential for both the stylists and clients in a salon.

3 Easy Strategies to Boost Your Credit Score for a Strong Financial Future

Did you know that a few small changes can lead to a big boost in your credit score? A strong credit score opens the door to better rates and terms when applying for loans or upgrading your credit card.

A credit score in the 670 to 850 range signals to lenders that you’re reliable and likely to repay loans on time. But remember, a great score isn’t built overnight – it takes time and smart financial habits. Here are three simple strategies to help you elevate your credit score:

1. Keep Your Card Balances Low Carrying a balance on your credit card? Paying it down — or better yet, paying it off — can work wonders for your credit score. Your credit utilization, the percentage of your available credit that you’re using, plays a big role here. Aim to use 30% or less of your total credit limit to keep your score climbing.

2. Pay Your Bills On Time Your payment history is the most significant factor influencing your credit score, accounting for 35% of your total score. Even one late payment can leave a lasting mark on your score. The solution? Set up automatic payments through your financial institution to make sure

you never miss a deadline.

3. Keep Your Credit Cards Open It might seem smart to close credit cards you’ve paid off, but not so fast! Keeping those accounts open can actually improve your credit utilization ratio, which could positively impact your score. So, think twice before closing those unused cards.

Looking for a way to manage your credit more effectively? MSUFCU can help. Whether it's setting up automatic payments through MSUFCU’s online banking or mobile app, using an MSUFCU Visa Credit Card to monitor and manage your spending, or exploring a range of financial products to diversify your credit mix, MSUFCU has the solutions you need to boost your credit score and build a strong financial future.
