The Legacy of Dr. Mar tin Luther King Jr
Black History
The Legacy of HBCUs: A Pillar of Black Excellence
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have long served as beacons of education, empowerment, and opportunity for African Americans in the United States. Founded during an era when higher education was largely inaccessible to Black students due to segregation, HBCUs became critical institutions in shaping Black intellectual, cultural, and social life. Today, they remain vibrant communities dedicated to fostering leadership, creativity, and success among their students.
The Origins of HBCUs
HBCUs were born out of necessity during the mid19th century. In the decades leading up to the Civil War, enslaved African Americans were legally prohibited from receiving an education, while free Black people faced institutionalized racism that barred them from attending most colleges and universities. Recognizing the need for higher education within the Black community, several individuals, organizations, and religious groups took action.
The first HBCU, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, was established in 1837 as the Institute for Colored Youth. It was founded by Richard Humphreys,

a Quaker philanthropist, to provide Black youth with training in trades and agriculture. Soon after, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania (1854) and Wilberforce University in Ohio (1856) followed. Wilberforce, notably, became the first HBCU owned and operated by African Americans when the African Methodist Epis-
copal Church took control in 1863.
Following the Civil War, the Second Morrill Act of 1890required states with racially segregated public schools to provide land-grant institutions for Black students, further contributing to the growth of HBCUs. Many of these schools, such as Tuskegee University and North Carolina A&T State University, focused on vocational training to prepare students for careers in industries that were accessible to Black workers at the time.
Why HBCUs Were—and Are—Essential
HBCUs were established as safe spaces where Black students could pursue higher education free from the discrimination and hostility prevalent in predominantly white institutions (PWIs). These schools provided more than just education; they offered a sense of community, empowerment, and cultural pride during a time of widespread racial injustice.
Today, HBCUs continue to fulfill this mission by addressing unique challenges faced by Black students, including affordability and a culturally inclusive curriculum.

Black Athletes That Broke the Color Barrier
Every sports record book should have asterisks riddled throughout the pages. How can we compare the game’s legendary names to the players in the sport today when athletes from yesteryear didn’t go against the top competition? Who knows how long it would have continued if it wasn’t for these Black athletes that broke the color barrier in sports?
William O’Ree (NHL)
The NHL is a diverse sport when it comes to its international appeal. You could throw a dart on a map and find an NHL player from there. However, the game is predominantly white, with nearly 97 percent of its active players Caucasian. Shockingly, there are only 26 Black players in the NHL, which should displease William O’Ree, the
first Black professional hockey player.
O’Ree’s first stint in the league only lasted two games, but fortunately, his second go around three years later saw him in 43 games for the Boston Bruins, scoring four goals and adding 10 assists. It took 13 years for another Black player to hit the ice.
Woody Strode & Kenny Washington (NFL)
Even though the NFL had a few Black players in the early 1920s, they didn’t have another for 20 years until World War II threw a massive wrench in the professional sports world. Many of the game’s best players hung up their cleats to fight for the U.S. overseas, leaving sports leagues short on players. The NFL responded by opening its doors for all, which was good news for

Kenny Washington and Woody Strode. Washington and Strode were teammates at UCLA before they entered the NFL, so their transition to the Los Angeles Rams wasn’t too much of a cul-
in Sports
ture shock. The back of their football card may lack the statistics of a legendary player, but their impact on the NFL paved the road for legends like Jim Brown to dominate the sport.
Chuck Cooper, Nat Clifton, & Earl Lloyd (NBA)
The trio played a critical role in changing the NBA in 1950. Although the Boston Red Sox were the last team to have a Black player (Pumpsie Green) on their roster, the city did right with O’Ree in the NHL and when the Celtics drafted Chuck Cooper. The Duquesne star played for the C’s for four years before finishing his career with the Fort Wayne Pistons two years later.

MSU Women’s Basketball: 3 Key Takeaways from the Eastern Kentucky Game
The Michigan State women’s basketball team won another game in blow out fashion on Thursday, despite a slow start. We only led by 4 at the end of the first quarter and didn’t build the lead at all in the second, but after halftime we brought the heat and out scored Eastern Kentucky 57 to 19. Ayrault missed a few early but brought her percentage up with great midrange shooting. Tate had a good matchup for her classic left hand attack, but suffered some early fouls that stopped her taking full advantage. VanSlooten struggled more than normal and gave up 6 turnovers. A lot went into this win which felt like our first real test of the season, here are three takeaways from our fourth game:
We’re going to shoot a lot of free throws this season: Teams have to get aggressive on defense to stop us scoring in the paint. We have forwards who can handle the ball to find their own shot or pass to open cutters and jump shooters, and we’ve got point guards who drive quickly

to the paint and seek contact. Grace VanSlooten leads the Spartans getting to the charity stripe 22 times in 3 games, and Hallock, Simmons, Ayrault and Blair are all averaging 3 or more free throws attempts per game. Being a great passing team is stressing defenses and allowing us to get good position in the paint. In Big Ten play we can expect our starting forwards and Inés Sotelo to get

more minutes, they will look to keep up that paint production and dare opposing defenses to foul. As a team we currently rank second in the nation in free throw attempts, taking 31 per game.
Eastern Kentucky could not stop sending the Spartans to the line where we hit 24 of our 33 attempts. The 73% is completion from this game reflects our average and leaves something to
be desired. Our guards have been too inconsistent with Simmons and Kimball missing half their frees against EKU, somewhat negating the 5 of 6 that Hallock hit. VanSlooten struggled in her first two games but hit 5 for 5 on Thursday; unfortunately, Sotelo wasn't getting them fall, with a 3 for 6 performance. We want opponents to continue giving us the attempts but we need to cash them in at higher percentage during Big Ten play, where a point here and there can be the difference.

Some of the Freshmen will expand their roles going in to Big Ten play, others will see their role reduced until next year: So far, our freshmen players have seen most of their minutes in the 4th quarter, with the exception of Inés Sotelo, our phenom forward from Spain, who leads our freshmen in minutes with 15 per game.
Ravens Secure Victory Over Chargers on Monday Night Football
The Baltimore Ravens edged past the Los Angeles Chargers with a 30-23 victory during a thrilling Monday Night Football matchup. Despite a shaky start, the Ravens overcame a 10-point deficit and showcased their versatility on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Lamar Jackson demonstrated resilience, finishing with 177 passing yards and two touchdowns after an uneven opening. Running back Justice Hill made a significant impact with a game-sealing 51-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Gus Edwards contributed a late touchdown to keep the game within reach for the Chargers, though their rally ultimately fell short.
The Ravens’ defense played a pivotal role, stifling Justin Herbert and the Char-
gers’ offense during crucial moments. Cornerback Nate Wiggins was particularly effective, recording six tackles and breaking up key passes to halt Los Angeles drives. The Chargers had flashes of brilliance, including a strong performance by Herbert, but penalties and missed opportunities plagued their efforts. Despite a late touchdown narrowing the gap, they couldn’t recover the onside kick with under a minute left, sealing the Ravens’ win.
With this victory, Baltimore improved to 9-3 and solidified their lead in the AFC North, while the Chargers dropped to 5-7, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Next, the Ravens face a tough test against the Philadelphia Eagles, who are riding a seven-game winning streak.

tion, and insurance, Eric reconnected with his roots—and entered Wendi's life. A longtime educator and insurance professional, Eric was set on creating a new chapter. That chapter included Wendi, and together, they've built a life and business that exudes love, perseverance, and shared dreams. Their relationship grew into a marriage during the height of the 2020 pandemic—a testament to their dedication to each other despite the world's challenges.
Wendi's experiences inspired her book, “Don’t Settle for Prince Charming: A Queen Deserves a King,” which details her journey to discovering selfworth and true love. In Eric, she found her King, a partner who supports her as they grow together.
Community Roots and a Shared Mission
After earning his degree from Eastern Michigan University, Eric pursued a career in teaching before transitioning to insurance, where he founded the Eric King Agency to serve the financial needs of educators. Wendi, an educator, author, and Eric’s biggest cheerleader, complements his drive with her own unique talents. Together, they balance two businesses—Poppa’s Cookbook and the Meemic Insurance - Eric King Agency—while supporting each other in every endeavor. Their mutual respect and admiration are evident in everything they do, from running a catering business to sharing their love story at the Allen's Farmer’s Market.
Poppa’s Cookbook: Love Served on Every Plate
Eric’s love for cooking began in his childhood home, where he watched his mother create meals that brought people together. With an innate ability to replicate and reimagine dishes, Eric honed his culinary skills over the years, starting with cooking for family and friends.
The inspiration for Poppa’s Cookbook stemmed from Eric's deep love for family. Called “Poppa” by his grandchildren, Eric began cooking for them, infusing each dish with love. His wife, Wendi, known as “Lolli” to the grandkids, completes the loving pair of “Lolli and Pop.” Together, they've transformed family traditions into a culinary business. As Eric developed his catering menu, it was crafted with their grandchildren and family in mind. Thus, the recipes truly originate from Poppa’s Cookbook. Eric used his affectionate nickname
“Poppa” to create the charming brand name, Poppa’s Cookbook.
The 2020 pandemic offered a silver lining for Eric, giving him the opportunity to improve his skills by exploring the art of commercial food preparation. The business gradually developed but experienced rapid growth after Eric catered an event. The idea for the business took shape at an event organized by Forrest and Theresa Bouyer's group, 'Petals and Pinecones'. During this well-attended gathering on October 17, 2024, Eric's culinary talents amazed the guests, prompting the couple to seek his catering services for many future events.

Launched officially in February 2024, Poppa’s Cookbook has become a staple of the Lansing community. Eric’s comfort foods, especially his signature chili, are fan favorites at the Allen Farmers Market, where he and Wendi share their story with patrons. His dedication has led to catering book-

How to Be Heart-Smart This Holiday Season

While the holidays can be a time of celebration with plenty of events, parties, and family and friend gatherings, this festive season can also be hectic — causing more stress to your heart more than you may realize.
“Certain cardiac events, such as heart attacks and heart failure flare-ups, become more common during this time of the year,” said Dr. Majid Mughal, interventional cardiologist at McLaren Greater Lansing Cardiovascular Associates. “People often lose sight of the need to make
healthy decisions or prioritizing self-care during this time of the year, so it’s important to monitor your health, including observing any red-flag symptoms.”
Such symptoms include noticing irregular heartbeats (arrythmia), feeling dizzy or out of breath, and experiencing chest pain. Common triggers of cardiac complications include stress, indulgence in rich, salty foods or alcohol, and overexertion. Dr. Mughal explains the risk factors and how to keep your heart healthy during the holiday season to avoid preventable trips to the emergency room.

Stress
During the holiday season, there may be one event after another. There may also be financial and social expectations that come with the holidays causing added stress. Dr. Mughal emphasizes the importance of taking breaks for self-care and of trying to stick to your normal, dayto-day activities as much as possible. Scan to read full story

Anew controversy is brewing over the latest release in the popular Wicked Doll toy line, as parents across the country are expressing outrage over an explicit website link found on the back of its packaging. The Chronicle Small Business Spotlight-How
R.M.
Easterly is Revolutionizing the Small Business Scene with THYIM: A Success Story

Courtesy Photo-R.M. Easterly - Founder/CEO THYIM
How
FAor R.M. Easterly, the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur started in the most unlikely of places—stranded on the side of a highway, helpless and waiting. What should have been a routine trip turned into a five-hour ordeal as R.M. waited endlessly for a roadside assistance service that never seemed to arrive. This frustrating experience would go on to change the course of her life and inspire the creation of THYIM, a company that now promises to do what others couldn’t: deliver fast, reliable assistance when you need it most.
As a serial entrepreneur with seven successful business exits under her belt, R.M. was no stranger to problem-solving, but this particular problem felt deeply personal. “I remember sitting there for hours, watching cars pass by,
feeling completely stuck,” she recalls. “It wasn’t just the inconvenience; it was the helplessness that really hit me.”
Determined to find a better solution, R.M. spent the next five years researching the roadside assistance industry from the inside out. In a twist of fate, she took a job at the very company that had left her stranded. There, she witnessed firsthand the inefficiencies and gaps in service that could leave someone vulnerable, with no help in sight. But it wasn’t until she met a 92-yearold woman in the same situation that her resolve to change the system truly crystallized.
“I’ll never forget her face,” R.M. says quietly. “She had been waiting for hours, just like I had, but her situation was far worse. She had soiled herself from waiting so long, and no one was
coming. It broke my heart to see her like that. I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.”
R.M. called a friend to assist the elderly woman, but the incident cemented a new sense of purpose for her: creating an assistance service that wouldn’t leave people stranded and vulnerable. THYIM was born from that moment, built on the promise of fast, reliable help when it’s needed most, with a focus on treating every customer with dignity and respect. It is an indoor and outdoor services company for everyday people by everyday people.

But R.M.’s journey to entrepreneurship began long before this pivotal experience.

Embracing a Regret-Free Life: Moving Beyond the Past
BY J. DOMONICK DIXIE
Regret is a powerful emotion that can haunt our thoughts, hinder our progress, and rob us of the present moment. However, it is within our power to break free from the grip of regret and cultivate a life filled with joy, growth, and fulfillment.
To avoid regret, it is essential to embrace a mindset of acceptance and forgiveness. Understand that mistakes are an inevitable part of the human experience, and dwelling on past missteps only keeps us trapped in a cycle of negativity. Instead, choose to learn from your past choices and use them as stepping stones for personal growth. Reflect on the lessons learned and make a conscious effort to apply those insights to present and future decisions.
Another crucial step in moving beyond regret is practicing self-compassion. Understand that you are not defined by your past actions or decisions.

Treat yourself with kindness, acknowledging that everyone makes mistakes. Replace self-blame and self-criticism with self-love and understanding. Embrace the belief that you deserve happi-
ness and a life free from regret. Moreover, living in the present moment is key to overcoming regret. Dwelling on the past or worrying about the future robs us of the beauty and
5 Life Skills To Teach High School Students
Students spend the majority of their time in school. It’s important to teach teenagers relevant life skills as they grow. Here are five life skills to teach high school students before they graduate.
Time Management
Time management is one of the most relevant life skills. Teenagers learn to juggle homework, extracurricular activities, and outside engagements during their time in school. You can also discuss real-life scenarios for time management. For example, teach students how to divide large tasks into manageable duties. Encourage them to use calendars, set reminders, and create time block schedules to stay organized.
Money Management
Money management is another life skill to teach high school students. The more conversations you have about

money with teenagers, the more they’ll understand finances. Budgeting, saving, and spending are relevant competencies for everyone.
High school is a great time for learning money management because many students attend college after graduation.
opportunities that exist in the here and now. Focus on what you can control today and take small steps towards the future you desire. Embrace gratitude for the lessons learned and the person you are becoming.
Lastly, surround yourself with a supportive network of family, friends, or mentors who uplift and encourage you. Share your experiences and fears with trusted individuals who can offer guidance and perspective. Seek their wisdom and learn from their own journeys, realizing that you are not alone in facing regret.
In the end, living a regret-free life requires embracing self-forgiveness, practicing self-compassion, living in the present, and cultivating a supportive network. Remember, it is never too late to make peace with your past and create a future filled with joy, growth, and endless possibilities. Seize the opportunity today and embark on a transformative journey towards a regret-free life.
They can enter a new stage in life with confidence. Credit card companies like to prey on young people and give them credit cards with high interest rates. Without proper knowledge, students can quickly get into debt. It’s important to cover all aspects of money management so teen-
agers can avoid financial mistakes!
Communication Skills
When people consider communication skills, they often think about conversations, vocabulary, and literary analysis. However, communication goes beyond academic-related applications. Students need written and oral skills to advocate for themselves. Teach students how to debate or persuade someone without combative language. Make teenagers better communicators by encouraging active listening, paying attention to body language, and expressing clear statements.
Workplace Etiquette
School is a suitable environment for students to learn professionalism before entering the workforce.

The Mother: What am I going to do with my children during this holiday break?
BY KRISTEN V FREEMAN
It is getting cold here in Michigan. Most days, we are only able to stay outside 30 minutes at a time. I have had to reimagine, plan and curate focused activities that will decrease the chaos during this season, in our home.
While I still value free play along with time spent cooking in the kitchen together, I realize that a solid, intentional project or activity:
allows for deeper connection
builds a team mentality/teamwork amongst child-parent and siblings
decreases mess after mess
decreases chaos and dis-regulation
allows children to feel a sense of accomplishment and confidence in their work
gives opportunity for child to work through organic, natural adversities in safe spaces
While I don’t know all the statistics, I realize it is fortifying, fun and exciting

for them...and for me! It breaks up the days and allows us to do something special and out of the ordinary block stacking, book reading and coloring. Now, I know many of you will be home on break with your children for a couple of days, or in some instances... weeks (gasp) during the holiday season. Here are some of our most favorite cold
weather activities this holiday season.
1.) Paint the shower
Yes, that’s correct. Let your kids paint the shower. I purchase our washable paints, paint brushes and ice trays online or at Dollar Tree. Budget friendly and pretty simple, squirt a bit of paint in the ice tray, skipping every other section to minimize paint mixing (because one of my kids does not deal well with paints touching....you guess which one).
After that, we get down to underwear and diapers, climb into the shower and go at it. I believe part of the allure and excitement comes from the feeling of “painting on the walls”. This allows them the freedom to make a huge mural and a big mess, too.
When we have squeezed that phase dry of its excitement, we move onto cleaning the shower together. This builds a sense of teamwork while seeing these duties as fun and engaging. Everyone takes a rag to the walls and
floor with dishwashing soap and/or all-purpose cleaning spray (we make a kid friendly one: baking soda, lavender & vinegar). We don’t quit until it’s all off and white, again. Hello, is that you persistence. I love interweaving activities with building values. It is also a bonus for this mama who (sometimes) needs some extra motivation to scrub the showers.
I also enjoy that the craft washes right away. Is it just me or do any other moms feel like they are swimming in their toddler’s artwork? As much as I love to archive special projects, this cuts down on paper waste which the planet perserver in me really appreciates.
I enjoy the three-in-one action of this activity as I usually do it in the afternoons after rest time.
Former MSU Executive Chef overcomes adversity to create distinct local plant-based eatery, Veg Head

BY KRISTEN V FREEMAN
Downtown Lansing, Mich.-
Kari Magee, notable area chef, opened Lansing's only plant-based eatery, Veg Head, in October of this year. With the support and shared vision of her business partner, Shawn Elliot, the two have collwctively made this concept come to life.
During our interview, steady streams of people flowed in for the dinner hour, seated along exposed brick walls, rich in character, with views of handcrafted murals and canvases filled with art by some of the area’s creatives, including Mila Lynn. Housed in one of the Ranney buildings owned by Elliot, some parts of the space had gone untouched
since the 1940s, prior to renovations made in 2005- a project to create residential apartments. Veg Head gifts the structure a second life and a fresh breath.
When Magee reflected on how their vision came together, they said “Everything (about Veg Head) was very intentional. It was so amazing to be able to do that, to be able to create this space for others. Veg Head is different. It brings in so many different people, different energy.”
Magee spent 10 years as Michigan State University’s Executive Chef of Retail (second woman in the role in the school's history)- overseeing athletic events, the food court, concessions and more. When Elliot approached her with a blueprint of this plant-based restaurant concept in

2021, Magee was willing to a huge leap into the unknown. Being a chef, entrepreneur and restauranteur does not come without its immense challenges. Atop of leaving a comfortable position and branching out as an independent chef, Magee also went through a divorce to begin 2022. They said, “Every time you do something big, what meets you first at the door is fear.” Of their challenges in opening up Veg Head, enduring the divorce and coming out as part of the LGBTQIA+ community (2014), they reflected, “You have to be authentic to yourself no matter what the cost. That is how I have learned my voice.”
