December 4, 1915, marks the beginning of The Great Migration, a pivotal moment in American history that significantly altered the demographic landscape of the nation. On this day, millions of Black Americans, driven by the oppressive conditions of the Jim Crow South, embarked on a journey northward in search of reprieve from the pervasive racism and systemic discrimination that had long defined their lives.
This mass movement was not merely a quest for physical relocation; it represented a profound yearning for dignity, equality, and a chance to build a better future for themselves
and their families. The Great Migration was fueled by a variety of factors, including the promise of better economic
opportunities in northern industrial cities, which were experiencing a labor shortage due to World War I.
As factories expanded and demand for workers increased, many Black Americans saw this as an opportunity to escape the agricultural toil and economic hardships of the South, where sharecropping often left them in a cycle of poverty and debt. Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia became beacons of hope, attracting those eager to find work and improve their living conditions. In addition to economic motivations, the Great Migration was also a response to the desire for educational opportunities that were often denied to Black children in the South.
Many families sought to
provide their children with access to better schools and a more equitable education system, hoping that this would enable the next generation to thrive in a society that had historically marginalized them. With the migration, communities began to form in these northern cities, creating vibrant cultural hubs that would eventually give rise to significant movements in art, music, and social activism, such as the Harlem Renaissance.

Known for advocating inclusivity and educational access, Ferguson’s efforts helped bridge longstanding divides, while his work in real estate reshaped Lansing’s urban landscape, creating opportunities for underrepresented communities. His legacy lives on as a beacon of resilience and empowerment.
Ferguson's dedication to his community was unmatched, and his legacy will be deeply felt for generations. As a
key figure in local movements for racial justice, he spearheaded numerous initiatives to bridge opportunity gaps, uplift marginalized voices, and ensure that Black history remains a proud, integral part of Lansing’s story.
Born and raised in Lansing, Ferguson understood the unique challenges faced by the Black community here and dedicated his life to making a meaningful difference. Over the years, he became widely recognized for his role in founding several educational and social programs that provided essential resources and support for Lansing’s underserved neighborhoods. Known for his warm spirit and persistent advocacy, Ferguson also mentored young people, helping to instill
pride and resilience as they navigated a world shaped by inequities. Throughout his career, he fought for educational equity, co-organizing initiatives that offered scholarships, tutoring, and mentorship for Black youth. His work extended into civic spaces, where he was a vocal advocate for policy changes that addressed systemic discrimination. Ferguson also celebrated Black culture and history in Lansing, leading annual events that honored the achievements and contributions of Black Americans, reminding the community that Black history is woven into the very fabric of Lansing.

With the development of the Grand Ledge Emergency Department and ambulatory care campus underway in Delta Township, McLaren Greater Lansing is expanding its ability to provide extraordinary care to our community.
To support the new project, the McLaren Greater Lansing Foundation recently established the Grand Ledge Community Health Fund. The fund will help bolster the development of the new freestanding ED and medical facility through major financial gifts from community leaders.
Local business leaders Dave Mohnke and Ed MacKenzie have become the founding leaders of the fund and made significant financial contributions to support the new facility.
When asked why he contributed to the project, Mohnke explained that he has been hoping to get an ER facility in Grand Ledge for several years. He believes it will be a “benefit to all in the community” and stated, “I think it’s going to be great for businesses and employees to have this right next door. If someone gets hurt, they can just pop down to Nixon Road. It really is needed.”
McLaren Greater Lansing is incredibly grateful for the leadership and support of Mohnke and MacKenzie because their gifts will make a positive impact on patients and families in our community. With their contributions, McLaren has already begun purchasing new equipment for the ER facility, such as the Lucas Chest Compression System.
As your home-based business begins to thrive, the prospect of expansion becomes both a necessity and an opportunity. This growth phase is not just about acquiring more space; it’s about creating an environment that supports your business’s evolving needs. Whether it’s enhancing your operational efficiency or ensuring your business remains secure and sustainable, each decision plays a crucial role in your success. By focusing on strategic improvements, you can transform your home-based business into a more robust and resilient enterprise.
When buying a larger home, consider how your business expansion might impact your neighborhood. Increased noise levels and foot traffic can disrupt the peace, so managing these factors is essential. Implement strategies like scheduling deliveries during off-peak hours or providing designated parking
for clients to maintain a positive relationship with your community. For more tips, explore strategies for establishing good relationships with your neighbors.
Investing in a home warranty is a smart way to protect yourself from unexpected repair costs. These annually renewable contracts provide
additional coverage for major home systems and appliances, ensuring your business operations stay on track. When exploring your options, it’s important to focus on understanding home electrical insurance options, including whether your coverage extends to interior electrical lines. This type of coverage can save you money and prevent downtime by keeping your power running smoothly during
unexpected repairs.
Soundproofing is vital to ensure a focused work environment. Solutions like double-stud walls with insulation can minimize noise transfer, allowing you to concentrate during work hours. Upgrading to double or triple-glazed windows enhances sound isolation, reducing external disturbances. By designing your workspace with quiet zones, you foster a productive atmosphere that supports your business’s success.
Choosing energy-efficient windows and doors is essential to manage heating and cooling costs effectively. Opt for high-performance inserts to reduce energy loss, especially if your current frames are in good condition.
Creating an engaging and inviting environment in teen centers fosters social interaction, personal development, and community engagement. Teen centers that focus on enhancing their social spaces can significantly impact the lives of those who frequent them. In this blog, we’ll explore ways teen centers can enhance their social space to ensure a positive and enriching experience for all.
Comfortable seating areas are a fundamental aspect of any social space. Teen centers should provide a variety of seating options, including sofas, bean bags, and chairs, to accommodate different preferences. These seating areas encourage teens to relax and engage in conversations with their peers, making them feel at home in the center. Ensuring the furniture
is durable and easy to clean will maintain a welcoming atmosphere over time.
In today’s digital age, incorporating technology into teen centers’ social spaces can greatly enhance the experience. Access to computers, tablets, and
charging stations allows teens to stay connected, complete homework, and enjoy digital entertainment. Additionally, offering Wi-Fi throughout the center ensures teens can use their devices without any connectivity issues.
Designing Interactive Areas
Interactive areas within the teen center are crucial for fostering creativity and engagement. Spaces dedicated to gaming, arts and crafts, or music can significantly enhance the social environment. For instance, setting up a gaming zone with consoles and board games provides a fun and interactive way for teens to connect. Similarly, an arts and crafts area with supplies can encourage creative expression and collaboration among teens.
Communication is key in teen centers, and using a whiteboard can be an effective tool. A whiteboard can serve multiple purposes in social settings, such as displaying upcoming events, daily schedules, and inspirational quotes.

Navigating healthcare can be daunting, but advocating for yourself at the doctor’s office remains crucial. Establishing clear communication ensures you receive the care you deserve. Feeling empowered in these situations enhances your healthcare experience and can lead to better outcomes—for you and your community. Here’s how you can effectively advocate for yourself and why it matters.
Self-advocacy doesn’t seem like something you should need to do when you’re putting your health into someone else’s hands. However, not speaking up about your needs or experiences can prevent a medical team from seeing the full picture before making decisions. The better you equip your doctor, the better decisions they can make. Additionally, taking measures to stick up for yourself in front of intimidating professionals can lay the foundation for others to do the same. While
you can’t be there to guide everyone, you can help a doctor see the importance of not just listening to their patients but truly hearing them.
The How Prepare for Your Appointment
Preparation is key to a successful doctor’s visit. Write down symptoms, questions, and any concerns beforehand. Bringing a list of medications and previ-
ous medical records can also be helpful. This step ensures you don’t forget important details during your appointment and allows the doctor to have a comprehensive understanding of your health.
Never hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear. Requesting explanations in plain language is your right. Inquiring about treatment op-
tions, side effects, and alternatives empowers you to make informed decisions about your health. Remember, no question is too small when it comes to your well-being.
Being informed about your rights as a patient is essential. If you feel uncomfortable or disrespected, remember that you have the right to express your concerns. Part of why taking legal action against abusive doctors is so important is that it protects patients and fosters accountability. Standing firm ensures you receive the respect and care you deserve.
Having a trusted friend or family member accompany you can provide additional support. They can help remember details, ask questions, or simply offer moral support.

Additional 70 beds to provide shelter for homeless, starting this winter
After months of planning, Holy Cross Services (HCS) and the City of Lansing have finalized a multi-phase expansion agreement to add an additional 70 beds to help support Lansing’s unhoused population. HCS’s homelessness services are headquartered out of the New Hope Community Center (NHCC) at the corner of North Larch and Shiawassee streets in Downtown Lansing. NHCC operates as the Capital Area’s largest low-barrier homeless shelter for overnight stay, includes a daytime area and provides a community kitchen. The City of Lansing is granting HCS $800,000 to fund the expansion and provide services to unsheltered Lansing residents.
HCS President and CEO Ryan Kunzelman commented on the New Hope expansion, saying, “Holy Cross Services is committed to providing a sustainable solution to address the needs of individuals and families experiencing homelessness, especially during the
cold winter months.” He also added, “We are prepared to move forward with both short and long-term implementation of this program, thanks to the support from the City of Lansing.”
“Lansing is working on all options to provide shelter and housing for those
of need and on the streets in our city. We are excited to work with Holy Cross to expand the number of beds that they can offer to the unhoused, especially as we are going into the winter. We have limited resources, and this expansion is a necessary piece of the puzzle towards stabilizing those on the streets in need of housing. This course of action will help build capacity for those in need now and set the stage for more multipronged assistance into the future,” stated Mayor Andy Schor.
The construction process will be executed to ensure that beds are ready for the community before winter. HCS will oversee a light internal ground floor renovation this fall to help remedythe immediate needs. Scan to read full story

Anew controversy is brewing over the latest release in the popular Wicked Doll toy line, as parents across the country are expressing outrage over an explicit website link found on the back of its packaging. The link, reportedly hidden in plain sight within the doll’s promotional design, directed users to a website containing adult content. The discovery has sparked an uproar among consumers who trusted the brand to provide child-friendly products. The Wicked Doll brand, known for its edgy themes and fashion-forward designs, has been a favorite among young audiences. However, this incident has left many parents questioning the company’s oversight and commitment to
protecting children.
Within hours of the discovery, parents took to social media to voice their concerns.
“How does something like this even happen?” tweeted one user, tagging the toy company. “This is completely unacceptable. Kids shouldn’t be exposed to this kind of content!”
Another user posted a video showcasing the packaging, which has since gone viral. The backlash prompted several large retailers to remove the dolls from their shelves pending further investigation, with some issuing public apologies to concerned customers.
The toy’s manufacturer, Wicked Creations, responded swiftly, issuing a public statement apologizing for the oversight and announcing a nationwide recall of the product. “We are deeply sorry for the error that led to an inappropriate website link being included on the packaging of the Wicked Doll,” the company stated. “This was not intentional and does not align with our values as a company. We are working to investigate how this occurred and have taken steps to prevent it from happening in the future.”

Do you dream of working in a salon? Whether you aspire to be a hairstylist, nail technician, or skincare specialist, the beauty industry offers a wide range of fulfilling career options. But working in a salon requires more than just a passion for beauty and creativity. Do you know what qualifications you need to work in a salon? Here’s what you’ll need on your résumé to get started in the industry.
The first step to securing your spot in a salon is obtaining a cosmetology license. This license proves you’ve received the necessary training and education in various beauty treatments and services. To earn it, you’ll need to enroll in a state-approved cosmetology school or program.
There are many different courses available for aspiring professionals. When determining which beauty train-
ing courses are right for you, ask questions like, “What skills will I learn?” and “How long will the program take?”
Hands-on experience is incredibly
valuable in the beauty industry. Most cosmetology programs include practical training, often through internships or apprenticeships. This allows you to practice your skills on real clients under the supervision of experienced professionals.
Take advantage of these opportunities to learn and perfect your techniques. Additionally, consider volunteering at local events or offering discounted services to friends and family to gain even more experience.
While a cosmetology license covers the basics, specialized training can help you stand out in the competitive beauty industry. Consider taking additional courses or certifications in areas like hair coloring, nail artistry, or skincare. These extra qualifications can make you more attractive to potential employers and clients. Plus, specialized training often leads to higher earning potential and more job opportunities.

This article presents practical strategies for leading initiatives that improve individual wellness and foster a healthier community. Promoting health, building strong community connections, and prioritizing well-being can create a lasting positive influence that benefits your business and those around you.
Organizing health screenings and vaccination campaigns at your workplace is a powerful way to boost employee and community health. These initiatives give your team access to preventive health measures and increase their awareness of personal health status, which is crucial in reducing absenteeism due to illness. By incorporating
best practices for workplace safety and health, you foster a culture that extends benefits beyond your immediate team to their families and the wider community. Proactive steps like these demonstrate your commitment to employee well-being and position your business as a responsible community leader.
Sponsoring community events such as charity runs and local sports leagues can significantly enhance physical activity and wellness in your area. Events like Run For Charity offer diverse opportunities for participants of all ages and abilities to en-
gage in physical exercise. By supporting these initiatives, you promote health and wellness while increasing your business’s visibility and customer engagement. Partnering with local health fairs allows you to provide valuable health screenings and educational services, further promoting a culture of wellness.
