Shirley Chisholm: Made History as the First Black Woman in Congress

The United States Congress is as diverse now as it has ever been, however, when Chisholm was attempting to shatter that glass ceiling, the same was not true. During the racial tension of the late 1960s, she became the first Black woman elected into congress. She represented New York's

12th District from 1969 to 1983, and in 1972, she became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Her campaign slogan: "Unbought and Unbossed". During her Kamala Harris's Vice Presidential campaign, she paid homage by using a similar slogan.

Women's Suffrage and The Fight for Equality – Is the Fight Over?

The women's suffrage movement was a long and hard-fought battle for women's right to vote and participate in political processes. Many individuals played key roles in this movement, including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, and Lucy Stone. These women, and many others, worked tirelessly to promote gender equality and secure the right to vote for women.

The fight for women's suffrage differed in various countries around the world, with some countries granting women the right to vote earlier than others. For example, New Zealand became the first country to allow women to vote in nation-

al elections in 1893, while it was not until 1920 that women in the United States were granted the right to vote. In some countries, women were only granted the right to vote after significant political

upheaval or social movements, while in others, it was a gradual process.

The impact of women's suffrage on society and politics was significant and far-reaching. Women's suffrage movements not only granted women the right to vote, but also helped to promote greater gender equality and social justice. Women's participation in politics and public life increased significantly following the granting of the right to vote, and women began to play increasingly prominent roles in shaping society and politics.

Lansing/East Lansing (MI) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will Honor ATHENA Award Recipients While Celebrating Women’s History Month

Lansing/East Lansing (MI) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will Honor ATHENA Award Recipients While Celebrating Women’s History Month LANSING – The Lansing/East Lansing Chapter of Links, in partnership with Black K.A.R.E (Kidney Awareness, Resources and Education), a program created by Baxter International Inc., will celebrate Women’s History Month by hosting the Links’ 2024 White Rose Gala on Thursday, March 21st. The dinner event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Eagle Eye Golf & Banquet Center, 15500 Chandler Road, Bath, Mich. During the event, themed The Wealth of Wellness, the Links will present the Young Professional Leadership and Organizational Leadership ATHENA Awards and will highlight the chapter’s ongoing community service efforts. This distinguished event provides the community with an opportunity to network with leaders from the business, legal, health, and education sectors.

Mable Martin-Scott, Esq., is the President of the Lansing/East Lansing Links. As the chapter prepared to celebrate Women's History Month, she asked members to reflect on the words of Ethel Isaacs Williams, J.D. National President of The Links, Incorporated,

who asked all members to answer the following questions as we present programs and award scholarships within our communities: “Is it really better for all of us? Is it better for the least of us and the community we serve as friends? And most importantly, do we still care enough to genuinely be our

sisters' and brothers' keepers?” President Martin-Scott has urged each member to answer those questions honestly and sincerely for oneself and to consider the questions as we reviewed the work and contributions of this year's recipients, who she believes have, too, answered these questions

with a resounding ‘yes’ as they continue their excellent and much-needed work in our community.

Dr. Shimia Isaac, DO, MPH, will receive the Young Professional Leadership Award. “I am truly humbled and thankful to have been nominated and awarded the 2024 ATHENA award,” said Dr. Isaac, a family medicine physician with Lansing’s Sparrow Medical Group. “Being a recipient of this award has motivated me to continue being authentic in the care I provide to those in this community but to also do even more with my compassion, skills, creativity, and interests.”

Comerica Bank will receive the Organizational Leadership Award. “The Lansing/East Lansing Chapter of The Links has had a profound impact on our community, and its extraordinary service for the past 50 years has uplifted women and improved the lives of our youth,” said Debra Van Hevele, Comerica Bank Senior Vice President, and Retail Regional Director. “We are humbled to be bestowed the honor of this year’s ATHENA Organizational Leadership Award. Our steadfast commitment to diversity, such as fostering the growth of women leaders at Comerica, further strengthens our culture and bolsters how we help serve our customers and communities.”

Sponsorships remain available at various levels and tickets are available for purchase. For more information, contact any member of the Lansing/East Lansing Links or access the organization’s website: https://www. lansingeastlansinglinksinc.org/whiterose-gala.

First Presbyterian Church of Lansing Podcast earns two gold awards in national marketing competition ‘A Mother’s Perspective’ podcast created to engage the community, advance DEI earns two top awards

LANSING, Mich. — The podcast

“A Mother’s Perspective” has earned two gold awards in the national 21stAnnual Service Industry Advertising Awards competition. The awards are in the categories of Podcasts and DEI — Diversity Equity Inclusion.

The marketing competition recognizes achievements in the service sector. Of more than 1,000 entries only 177 were recognized. Entries were reviewed based on execution, creativity, message impact, technology application, content innovation and overall breakthrough marketing content.

The limited-episode podcast was co-produced by First Presbyterian Church of Lansing and Prince Solace, in partnership with Vision Success Marketing. Solace was also the host. The goal was to engage the Greater Lansing community and advance DEI within the church. It is available on Spotify at https://bit.ly/MP-P.

“Churches need effective and impactful ways to communicate with their com-

munity,” said Solace. “It’s rewarding to know that our communications work in Lansing compares favorably with, and in many cases exceeds, work done at the national level by major corporations.”

Solace is director of congregational life at Lansing First Presbyterian and president of the Justice League of Greater Lansing Michigan. The League is a not-for-profit, faith-based reparations

organization addressing racial wealth inequity in Greater Lansing through support of education, home ownership and entrepreneurship.

The podcast focuses on how mothers’ perspectives on faith, culture, class, race and parenting impact adult children’s interaction with their community. The lesson is people are not that different. All mothers use their passions to help their children have fulfilling lives and to make positive impacts in their communities.

Solis said that the diversity of guests was key. Represented are members and nonmembers of Lansing First Presbyterian, persons with traditional and nontraditional family backgrounds, and individuals of various ethnicities and races.

Small Island Big Song is a multimedia project uniting the seafaring islands of the Pacific and Indian Ocean through artistic collaboration to highlight humanity’s impact on the ever-changing planet we call home. piece" as described by Rob Schwartz (Billboard).

Across the Indian and Pacific Ocean regions, environmental and cultural loss threatens island life.

The collective lifestyles of humanity have directly affected the global environment, and the planet is now a fragile island which everyone is responsible. Rather than point fingers, Small Island Big Song’s inspirational artists sing from the

depth of their heritage for a sustainable future, celebrating tradition, and uplifting the music of their homelands.

"In our globalized, computerized world, music can bring us awareness of who we are, our history and our values, and our connection to nature. I bring what my grandfather poured into me.” — Yoyo Tuki, Small Island Big Song (from Rapa Nui - Easter Island)

Spring Into Action: Ways to Stay Active and Prevent Sports-Related Injuries

Spring is finally here. As the weather starts to warm up, many people spend more time outdoors and get back into sport-related activities after the long winter months. While living an active lifestyle is vital for your overall health, injuries can and do happen.

“Injuries can occur at all ages in a wide variety of joints,” said Dr. Toufic Jildeh, orthopedic and sports medicine specialist at MSU Health Care, who performs procedures at McLaren Greater Lansing. “Whether it is a sudden or chronic injury, there are steps people can take to prevent

further pain and damage that would lead to more concerning injuries.”

Dr. Jildeh is the head team physician for MSU Athletics and for the U.S. Olympic Ski and Snowboard team, and he sees patients for sport-related injuries such as those affecting the knee, shoulder, and hip joints, including broken bones, dislocated joints, and injuries to ligaments and tendons (such as the ACL and meniscus).

Transitioning Outdoors

With shorter days and colder temperatures, some people may

not be as active in the winter. Even if you are going to the gym regularly or perform athletic activities, your muscles and joints can weaken. A sudden increase and demand for these muscles and joints can lead to injury.

“When you are getting back into an activity, it’s important to take the necessary steps to help strengthen and support your...

Lansing City Election Has So Much At Stake, But Do Voters Know About It?

Lansing, Michigan-The City of Lansing’s most important election in more than 40 years is less than 2 months away and candidates like Ross Yednock are working to make sure city voters know both about the stakes of the election and their candidacy.

In last November’s election, Lansing voted to form a City Charter Commission by a 51.6% - 48.4% margin. The Charter Commission will be made up of 9 commissioners who will be elected on May 7,

2024. Once elected, they will be responsible for reviewing the current city charter and proposing changes.

“I started going door-todoor after it passed to talk to people about the city charter, what it is, and what the election could mean for our city,” said Yednock, a State of Michigan worker, 20+ year Lansing resident and community volunteer. “While some did know, far too many did not and that was concerning. This election is essentially selecting the people who will serve on our city’s constitutional convention to

study if our city’s government is living up to its responsibility to us. I want to make sure it engages people from all our neighborhoods and communities and every person who calls Lansing home.”

Unlike other city elections where a few candidates are selected to serve a term and make decisions on what rules impacting people should be adopted and how to spend the city’s tax dollars, the Charter Commission will look at the rules the city government follows and if they are working, or not. It could: change the number of City Council members; the number of districts and at large seats; the role and power of the mayor’s office; the Board of Water and Light; how advisory commissions and boards are set up; and even if Lansing elections are held during presidential and gubernatorial elections or continue on odd-number

years.

There are 36 (you read that right) people running for 9 positions. Lansing voters who vote by mail will receive ballots in less than 3 weeks. Voters can vote for up to 9 people, but they do not have to vote for 9, however, if they accidentally vote for more than 9, none of their votes will count.

“Lots of people I’ve heard from are frustrated with the state of things in our city and want to see our city government function better and provide more equitable outcomes,” said Yednock. “That can happen, but now more than ever, voters need to do their own research. This election is right around the corner and so much is at stake. I encourage people to go to www.Ross4Lansing. com and other candidate’s sites and then contact the candidates to see who best represents your values and vision for Lansing’s future.”

More information about this important election can be found at lansingvotes.gov.

How to Keep your Marriage Hot with Young Children

In the midst of tending and caring for young children, married couples can allow their union to be diluted down to mere coexistence. It does not mean you don’t love one another. It does not mean you cannot have a great marriage. If you have fallen into the habit of dancing around one another, it does not mean you are too far gone to revive what, at times, may feel lost in your child or children's schedules and big emotions.

This season of living your married life with littles is an invitation to explore new ways to add kindling on the old flame that, in its very essence, created them. It’s never too late to make a change or create a habit together that will strengthen your bond, arouse deeper intimacy and rediscover the healing powers of desire and sexual connection. At times, we think about attraction as a given- an immovable force that just is if it once was. While this can feel true in the "honeymoon phase", effort needs to be made to stay attracted to one another over time.

Marriage in its design is not seasonal as it is a commitment for longevity, but chapters of a marriage most certainly are. Now, let’s talk about how you can infuse your marriage with the heat of a Houston summer that feels even better than the first time you made love, together.

1.) Try something new

For starts, this could be inside or outside of the bedroom.

*wink wink* You can try new activities, like a sport or a movement class. Maybe, you try one of those pottery or cooking classes you have been talking about wanting to do for years. You can try new cuisines, a new restaurant in town or prepare new, fun drinks based on recipes you find on the internet.

You could pick out a few new travel spots, either a short road trip away or catch a flight to a new country neither of you have visited. You can do a stay-cation in a new-to-you hotel.

For more tantalizing experiences, you can talk about and find a new type of foreplay you both want to try. You can try a new position or… if you don’t know of any new ones, move your bodies together to create one. Nothing is

new under the sun but it can be new to the both of you. Use your imagination. If you enjoy wearing lingerie, get a new set. Sometimes, it is fun to pick a color, style or texture you would have never tried before.

The list is literally endless and the possibilities overflow. Doing something you both have never done before can add a layer of excitement that fuels passion. Most people genuinely enjoy gifting another human a pleasurable first experience. It gives you something fresh to talk about. It opens your mind, which in practice, creates space to dream into one another differently- more expansively.

2.) Get bored together

Flipping over the same token to the other side now, try all the same ol’ things you have been doing together

with a new lens. Be present together in what you may usually think to be boring or mundane. Try a day of intention- one where you experience each moment with sensation, not taking one second for granted.

Instead of filling your gaps and spaces in the day-to-day with a screen, turn off your phone for a bit. Stop scrolling for a few minutes when you feel boredom hit and alternatively, start exploring- specifically exploring your partner.

Like my husband says “Let me scroll on you. Let me double tap that.” We can be so consumed. The world is at our fingertips each minute of everyday. We can take to hyper-entertaining ourselves into never leaving space for the organic arousals that are bred out of boredom.

Look at your partner’s hand. Feel the creases or callouses. Draw over the lines. Take inventory of the outline of their body, the shape, the posture, the expression, the life, there. Have you looked into their eyes lately? I mean, really looked to see if you can differentiate their pupil from their iris? When you get bored, allow it. Then, use that space to drink one another in.
