WELCOME

T O D U T C HE SS C OU NTY, IN T HE HEART O F N E W YORK’S HU DS ON VALLEY!

POUGHKEEPSIE, OUR COUNTY SEAT, was named by Native Americans, who roamed the hills and fished the rivers in this beautiful valley. They may be gone, but traces live on in the names of streets, parks and villages. The Dutch were the first Europeans, followed by British and settlers from throughout Europe. Although their communities have grown into charming villages, artists’ districts and thriving commercial hubs, the names of the earliest inhabitants remain, from Poughkeepsie (reed covered hut by the little water place) to Fishkill (-kill is Dutch for stream). Today, Dutchess County’s natural, scenic beauty, combined with its convenient access, make it ideal for day trips or longer getaways. Only 90 minutes north of New York’s metro area and the Capital District, it’s accessible by car, train, bus and air. Discover Dutchess’ natural beauty and friendly people. It’s the kind of place where folks gather to sip a glass of wine or cold cider and relax, watching the sunset turn the Catskill Mountains blue and purple. Dutchess celebrates the fine and performing arts, along with New York State’s 2010 emphasis on the arts. The arts inspire people, generate ideas, create initiatives and motivate actions! The arts live at Dia:Beacon, Riggio Galleries, Vassar’s Loeb Art Center and the Gehry-designed Fisher Center for Performing Arts at Bard College. The Bardavon has showcased national acts since 1869,

and the Center for Performing Arts in Rhinebeck houses locally produced theater and family shows. An abundance of historic landmarks means you can revisit the Colonial era, the Gilded Age or World War II. Our “great estates” are now museums, and in addition to house tours, their grounds boast formal and vegetable gardens, hiking trails and vast lawns for picnics or Frisbee. Tour the Hudson homes of FDR, Vanderbilt and Morse. Learn about FDR, Eleanor and the greatest generation in our nation’s first Presidential Library and Museum. Savor the bounty of Dutchess, from farm fresh fruit, produce and wine, to cheese and bread. Our free Farm Fresh Guide maps hundreds of farms and farm markets to visit, plus suggested itineraries. Taste locally grown and produced food at one of five, student-staffed restaurants at The Culinary Institute of America. Dine at other fine eateries, many of which boast a CIA-graduate chef. A wealth of outdoor activities makes Dutchess a destination for nature lovers, with dozens of parks, multiple use areas, gardens, nature sites and trails. Recreational activities abound. Spend a day on the links, choosing from 16 golf courses. Hike, bike, or fish in our streams or the river. Craft and antique fairs, festivals, fine and performing arts, and hundreds of exciting events make Dutchess the perfect destination for a quick getaway. See Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome’s vintage planes

in airshows. Fill your weekend with family fun at Splashdown Beach, Trevor Zoo and Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum. Rekindle the romance at a B&B. Browse in Rhinebeck, Millbrook and Beacon’s antique shops and art galleries. Treat yourself to horseback riding. Study at our one of our five colleges. Travel here, but journey within at the Omega Institute or another retreat center. Drink it all in, from the scenic landscapes to the award winning wines! Sometimes the best way to find a place is to get lost in it! Follow our byways and country roads, using our Scenic and Historic Drive Tours and Bike Tours, all found on our website. Choose an itinerary and wind through beautiful countryside on your own outdoor adventure. Spectacular views of the Hudson, Catskill and Berkshire Mountains and gently sloping farmland have inspired artists and poets for centuries. The photo opportunities are unrivaled, especially from the new Walkway Over the Hudson! Four hundred years after Henry Hudson sailed up his namesake river, the exploration continues. Come see what the buzz is about! Visit DutchessTourism.com for up-to-the minute event listings, lodging availability and articles on things to do, even Top Ten Lists of our favorite things! Call 800-445-3131 for information.

VISIT THE NEW WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON New York State’s newest park, the Walkway Over the Hudson, welcomes walkers, joggers, bikers, and skaters to enjoy the longest, highest pedestrian bridge in the world! The Walkway provides magnificent bird’s-eye views of the Hudson River, Catskill Mountains, and adjacent landscape. The former 19th century Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge is 1.25 miles long and 212-feet high! You’ll start walking on a wide, tree-lined path, past backyards and businesses in the city of Poughkeepsie, then over rooftops and treetops, and soon you’re looking down on the train station, Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum, and the Mount Carmel Square neighborhood. Gradually the ground falls away; now you’re above Waryas Park, and the Hudson River. The Walkway Over the Hudson, which once carried freight trains to the rest of the country, is now for the enjoyment of all. It’s a unique attraction, not like any other you’ve visited. The Walkway Over the Hudson is a free linear park, handicapped accessible and dogs are allowed. Visit daily, 7am-dusk. It’s a must-see! www.Walkway.org

Fish and Game Whether you’re looking for trophy-class fish or you just want to experience the tranquility of a secluded trout stream, Dutchess County has it all. The Hudson River is quickly becoming the destination point for anglers from around the globe. Our many stocked streams and lakes have miles of public access available, and hunters and water fowlers can challenge themselves at one of our many multiple use areas. For sporting clays, trap and skeet shooters, Dutchess County is a top Northeast destination, with four shooting clubs and preserves open to the public. There are numerous spots for catching trout, bass, pickerel and perch, as well as places for dip-netting smelt, alewives and blueback herring. The beautiful Hudson itself is an ideal setting for numerous species, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, brown bullhead, carp, white catfish and American shad. Dutchess County is one of the top two counties in the Southern Region of New York State for deer hunting with a special archery season for deer spanning a total of about six weeks. In designated hunting areas you can also find pheasant, grouse, woodcock, squirrel, cotton-tail rabbit, raccoon and waterfowl. Be sure to contact the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in New Paltz for specific fishing and hunting regulations and other relevant information before your planned visit to Dutchess County.

farm fresh guide

If you would like a Farm Fresh Guide, circle 36 on the Reader Response card or call Dutchess County Tourism. 800/445-3131.

Hungry for farm-fresh experiences? Dutchess County offers plenty of opportunities to nourish your body and mind. Visiting a farm, winery, or specialty shop or restaurant that features Dutchess County products is as easy as requesting a free copy of the Dutchess County Farm Guide. The full color, 28-page unique reference guide highlights farms, farmers markets and businesses that support area farms by serving or selling local dairy, produce, and other food products. Suggested itineraries are also included. The center of the guide is a Dutchess County map that folds out to direct visitors from farm to farm, and to farmers markets. The map has detailed listings of what produce/products are available and when. Small, individual and family-owned farms and vineyards located throughout the county are an important part of the scenery, and the reason visitors return season after season for farm tours, scenic drive and bike tours. Visitors to a Dutchess County farm might observe how cheese is made, tap a maple tree for syrup, taste farm-fresh milk, visit sheep that produce fine wool, explore a corn maze, try hundreds of varieties of tea, tour vineyards and sample local wines, or pick seasonal fruits, berries, vegetables and enjoy a harvest festival. After the apples and pumpkins are picked, visitors often return at Thanksgiving to choose and cut their Christmas tree; others opt for fresh, pre-cut trees, wreathes and roping at our tree farms. In addition to preserving the landscape and providing great-tasting food and beverages, area farms play a vital role in supporting the region’s economy. Dutchess County’s rich, agriculture-based heritage continues today, with more than 650 farms encompassing 20 percent of the county’s acreage. Farmfresh. dutchesstourism.com

SCENIC BIKE TOURS Tour 1

Tour 5

Winds through the heart of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, beginning in historic Hyde Park. The route is generally easy to moderate with some hills. Total length is 21.7 miles. Highlights include the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Home, Museum and Library, Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site, the grand Gilded Age mansions of Frederick and Louise Vanderbilt and Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills. All sites are open for tours, while many have majestic, panoramic views of the Hudson River.

Takes you through the Harlem Valley, known for its farm landscapes and rolling meadows. Total length is 33.7 miles and can be one of the more challenging tours. Begin at the Dover Plains train station, convenient for visitors from New York City, who can bring their bikes on the Harlem Line of Metro-North. Highlights include the historic village of Pawling, filled with quaint stores and restaurants. Webatuck Craft Village is a working craft village with buildings dating back to the 18th century. Shops include stained glass, copper works, pottery and country furniture. Enjoy tranquil views of the Ten Mile River, a real hot spot for trout fishing.

Tour 2 Route leads through the charming village of Rhinebeck, where the Beekman Arms, regarded as America’s oldest continuously operated inn, is located, as are more than 200 historic houses. Highlights include Montgomery Place and Wilderstein. Tour loops through the village of Red Hook, past the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, where you can catch an antique air show on the weekends. Total length is 32.4 miles.

Tour 3 Leads you through the town of Pleasant Valley and the hamlets of Clinton Corners and Schultzville. Route features rural farm and landscapes in central Dutchess County. The route is moderate with one long gradual hill. Total length is 27.5 miles. While enjoying the outstanding scenery relax with a picnic which you can pick up at one of the quaint general stores along the way. Farm markets are also located on the tour, where you can purchase the freshest produce and products made in Dutchess County.

Tour 6

Tour 4 Scenic treasures can be found along this tour, which encompasses the town of Pleasant Valley, village of Millbrook and the hamlets of Verbank and Clinton Corners. The route is moderate with a few short hills. Total length is 42.6 miles. Tour will take you through a glorious countryside, winding past impeccably manicured horse farms. Include a visit to the Institute of Ecosystem Studies, a botanical garden and research center. Another nature site close to the route is Innisfree Garden, which contains unique “cup” gardens designed in a Chinese style dating back 1,000 years. In the town of Millbrook, you can antique shop and explore the farmer’s market on Saturdays.

Explores a different area of the Harlem Valley, conveniently beginning at the Dover Plains train station. The route is moderate with a few short hills. Total length is 42.2 miles. Cyclists will pass through the villages of Millerton, Wassaic and Amenia and through the historic rural hamlets of Leedsville, Amenia Union and South Amenia. A highlight of this tour is a ten-mile traffic free stretch on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. The town of Millerton, filled with country stores and antique shops, makes for a great rest stop. The bike ride is particularly notable for its view of historic barns and up close experiences with nature – sheep, cow and wild turkey crossings are not uncommon.
