painting the hudson river A 4-day tour exploring the homes and studios of the Hudson River School of Painters while traveling through the scenery that inspired them. Museums devoted to the works of the New York School provide a nice counterpoint along the way.

day 1

Start your tour at Ever Rest, the home and studio of Jasper Cropsey, one of the most famous artists of the Hudson River School. A more modern view can be found at SUNY Purchase College where the Neuberger Museum of Art houses an exciting collection of 20th century modern and contemporary art. Next, stop is Philipsburg Manor where tours depart for Kykuit, home to four generations of Rockefellers. The magnificent home has an impressive collection of 20th century sculpture along with terraced gardens and views of the Hudson River.

day 2

West Point Museum maintains a large collection of works by Robert Walter Weir, a Hudson River School artist who was the Academy’s drawing instructor for 42 years. Other artists of the Hudson River School are also in the collection. Next door, at the United States Military Academy’s Visitor Center, take the tour bus through the academy. Stops along the way include Trophy Point, a popular vantage point for Hudson River School artists. Nearby, Storm King Art Center’s rolling lawns house the largest sculpture park in the United States. The museum celebrates the relationship between art and nature on 500 acres of landscaped lawns, fields and woodlands, echoing the relationship between the Hudson River School painters and their surroundings. The setting provides the site for postwar sculptures by internationally renowned artists. Washington’s Headquarters gave Hudson River School artists a sweeping view of the Newburgh Bay, Bannerman Island and Storm King Mountain, a common site for them to paint. Raphael Hoyle’s “Washington’s Headquarters at Newburgh” is displayed in nearby Crawford House, an 1830’s English country-style house museum.

day 3

Across the river at Vassar College, The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center includes both Hudson River School and New York School artists in their collection. Olana, the Moorish-style villa of Frederic Edwin Church, provided inspiration for this Hudson River School painter with its sweeping views from its mountaintop setting.

day 4

Cedar Grove was the home of Thomas Cole, the father of the Hudson River School of Art. The house contains galleries of oil paintings and prints as well as rooms with Cole artifacts and period furnishings. Kaaterskill Falls is a much celebrated scenic site. Thomas Cole painted it several times, and most of the Hudson River School artists found there way here to include it in their works. Nearby, the Catskill Mountain House stood for many years. Perched on the edge of a Catskill escarpment, the site provides a spectacular view of the Hudson Valley, an inspiration to the Hudson River School painters many years ago. The Empire State Plaza Art Collection houses paintings of the New York School, while the Albany Institute of History and Art, one of the oldest museums in the United States, contains paintings from the Hudson River School. The latter has a dramatic installation of these paintings in 2 striking galleries.

hudson valley fresh air A 4-day tour exploring the beauty of the region through quaint villages and towns. Museums and conservation centers along the way give an in-depth look at the ecology of the Hudson Valley Region. There are numerous opportunities as well for golf, skiing, horseback riding, camping and bird watching, since the area is an all season paradise for the outdoor enthusiast.

day 1

Begin your tour at the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson River at Stony Point Battlefield. The museum houses exhibits and a slide show of the site. Nearby, visit another Revolutionary War site at the newly restored Fort Montgomery. Pathways wind around the 1777 foundations of barracks and powder magazine to the grand battery on a bluff overlooking the Hudson. Walk across the suspension bridge that connects to Bear Mountain State Park for a delightful stroll through the Trailside Zoo and Museums.

day 2

Start the day with a leisurely stroll along the Harlem Valley Rail Trail that passes through the hamlets of Amenia and Copake Falls. Then it’s time to get “on” the Hudson and there’s no better way than a narrated tour on Dutch Apple Cruises in Albany. Afterwards, the New York State Museum has collections of geological treasures, flora and fauna from across the state.

day 3

In the majestic Catskill Mountains, Kaaterskill Falls is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State. Many Hudson River school artists were inspired to paint it over 100 years ago. There are marked trails along the falls area. Get an unusual aerial view from the Hunter Mountain Sky Ride offering breathtaking views. Hunter is also host to many special festivals throughout the spring, summer and fall.

day 4

Explore the valley by tube or train. The Catskill Mountain Railroad, a 6-mile ride along the Esopus Creek and Catskill Mountains, is a breathtaking experience. For a real adventure in the outdoors, ride the creek with F.S. Tube and Raft Rental, a fun way to see our region and the Esopus Creek. Or visit Mohonk Preserve where you’ll find 60 miles of well-marked trails and roads for hikers and bikers as well as rock climbing along the Shawangunk Ridge.

hudson valley gardens day 1 A four-day tour of breathtaking Hudson Valley gardens

also worth a visit

Your tour begins at Lyndhurst, a grand historic Gothic Revival estate, and an outstanding example of 19th-century landscape design. The Rose Garden includes 100 varieties of roses designed in a circular pattern, while the Fern Garden is bordered by a rock garden. An 1870 conservatory greenhouse remains on site with outdoor plants, one of the largest private greenhouses in the world at the time. Kykuit, home to four generations of the Rockefeller dynasty, offers magnificent views of the Hudson River from the palatial estate. The remarkable beaux-arts landscape was created by William Welles Bosworth between 1907 and 1913. Formal gardens include the Rose Garden, Morning and Brook gardens, Italian garden, Adam and Eve Fountain area, and several terraced areas featuring sculptures by Henry Moore, Gaston Lachaise, Aristide Maillol, Alexander Calder, and others. An elegant, neo-classical mansion sited high above the Hudson River, you enter Boscobel through the apple orchard to the formal rose garden with its central fountain. There are over 140 varieties of roses and 600 separate plants on display in the garden. The one-mile Woodland Trail winds through 29 acres of wooded landscape with rustic structures, and features spectacular vistas of the river.

day 2

At Storm King Art Center, 500 acres of fields and woodlands provide a dramatic setting for over 120 works of contemporary sculpture. Visitors are free to roam through this unique, outdoor gallery overflowing with rhododendron, wildflowers and works by artists such as David Smith, Alexander Calder, Mark di Suvero, Alexander Liberman, Alice Aycock, Louise Nevelson, and Henry Moore. Nearby, the Orange County Arboretum rambles over 35 acres of professionally planned and planted hillsides. Indigenous trees, a Shakespeare Garden, water garden, raised gardens and meandering groomed paths are a feast for the eyes. Gardening has been a cornerstone at Mohonk Mountain House since the land was purchased in 1869. Since then, Mohonk has expanded its award-winning gardens, which reflect French and Italian influences, but focus mainly on mid-19th century English landscaping. Founder Albert K. Smiley’s original designs have been maintained as the gardens have matured and evolved. They offer glimpses of the past, allowing guests to enjoy large masses of flowering summer annuals and magnificent vistas and views.

day 3

Across the river, one of the Hudson Valley’s great estates is the Vanderbilt Mansion. Terraced gardens cover 3 acres with trellises, pools, a loggia, and brick walls. Maintained in its original design, the grounds boast rare species as well as perennial favorites in abundance. The rose garden has over 1,200 plants Montgomery Place, an historic site with 434 acres of gardens, commercial orchards, historic forest and spellbinding vistas, reflects the privileged life of Hudson Valley aristocracy from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present. Stroll through the rough garden, the rose garden, the herb garden and end by viewing the A.J. Downing landscape overlooking the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains. The home of Hudson Valley School artist Frederic Edwin Church, Olana stands 500 feet above the Hudson, reached by carriage trails that delight guests. The gardens around the house were started in 1880 and are scattered with old roses, peonies, cosmos, bee balm, nasturtiums, dahlias and sweet alyssum. The meadows sloping gracefully down toward the river are a carpet of wildflowers that bloom from early spring through autumn.

day 4

At Mountain Top Arboretum, native trees, shrubs and wildflowers live side-by-side with plants from all corners of the world, including 8 varieties of flowering crab apples, 8 types of mountain ash, flowering shrubs and yellow and red-twigged dogwoods. The arboretum also boasts rock gardens; a pond full of aquatic plants and walking trails through nearby woods in the glorious Catskill Mountains. Academy Park is a small horticultural jewel, designed to celebrate the tri-centennial of the city of Albany. The garden includes 225 evergreen cultivars and 90 companion plants, as well as a native wildflower garden. Among 100 New York State species featured are jack-in-the-pulpit, columbine, skullcap, asters and sunflowers, providing a feast of color to delight the eye. In nearby Troy in late March, the Capital District Flower and Garden Show bursts with Spring Color. Over 100 exhibits and a garden market place provide numerous ideas for building a garden.
