Mossyrock’s success this season will be tied directly into its offensive line — and luckily for them, the complete unit is back from last year. “Our offensive line will definitely be improved from last year and they’ll still be young guys up front,” Mossyrock coach Curt Spahn said. “If our skill guys aren’t the best in

Tigers No Strangers to Hype and Ignoring It By The Chronicle The Tigers aren't taking any preseason hype seriously. They never do. Napavine returns eight players on each side of the ball this year from a squad that lost a tight State 2B quarterfinal contest to Raymond last season, and the expectations — and, yes, the hype — are high, with Napavine voted the No. 2 team in the state in the Associated Press' preseason poll. "The rankings are nice to have, but our goal is the same goal it's been since I got here in 2007, and that's to find a way to get into the state playoffs," Napavine coach Josh Fay said. "Then we'll play it one game at a time, and maybe we'll get lucky, and maybe we won't." The Tigers, again, will roll out two quarterbacks. a freshman, will essentially be the passer, while Brady Woodrum will take snaps and occasionally run out of the wildcat formation. "Wyatt looks good. He's doing a lot of good things for us right now. His footwork needs to improve, but he looks good," Fay said. "The thing that's going to help him, is I really like what we've got at receiver. We've got some kids that are tough matchups, and I think our offensive line is up to the challenge."

Loggers Will Ride Kastl and a Big Line in 2014 By The Chronicle

When you have a teammate like Travis McMillion, who's now suiting up for Pacific Lutheran University, it can be hard to make your own mark. But Onalaska's Kiefer Kastl left plenty of marks on opposing defenders during the running back's 1,313-yard campaign in 2013. "Kiefer is a great kid and we're looking forward to his senior season," Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said. "He's worked very hard and he's super excited for this offensive line. They've put in a lot of time in the offseason." And the Loggers' key to success — something they experienced last year when they advanced to crossover round of the postseason — will rest on that offensive line. "If they can move guys up front we'll be good," Saade said. "That's football. It's blocking and tackling and it's going to be a long season if we can't do that but we have a lot of faith in our line." That line includes first team all-league offensive and defensive lineman Chase Wilcutt along with returners Jared Trulson, Roberto Patraca, Zack Caldwell and Zack Huffman. After a great performance at Camp Rilea, Saade is looking for those players to open the same holes that last year got Kastl 13 touchdowns and 7.2 yards a carry

A new mascot and a new team name are just the beginning. Pe Ell and Willapa Valley high schools opted over the summer to combine programs for football, baseball and softball, deciding on a new mascot — the Titans — and giving coach Josh Fluke plenty of new faces and bodies to work with this season. Indians Happy to be New Kids on the Central 2B Block By The Chronicle There’s plenty of reasons for Toledo football fans to be excited this fall. You could start with the state’s reclassification, which dropped Toledo down from the 1A classification to the 2Bs. With that, of course, came a shift from playing in the SWW 1A League Trico Division to the Central 2B League. It’s not necessarily a drop-off, from a competitive standpoint; the C2BL, after all, has put five teams in the state championship game in the last six years. As far as drumming up interest locally, though, the move couldn’t be better. Gone will be long road trips to the Columbia River Gorge to play White Salmon and Stevenson; instead, Toledo will match up with historic rivals Winlock, Napavine, Onalaska and Adna, among others. “There won’t be eight people from Seton Catholic, or three people from Forks watching,” thirdyear Indians coach Jeremy Thibault joked. “I can’t wait.” And the Indian faithful are expected to have a decent product to watch on the field, as well. Toledo went 3-6 last year in the Trico but returns a boatload of starters for its debut in the C2BL. Toledo’s offense will be based on the Wing-T, but Thibault pointed out it’s merely the base formation; the team’s speed will give it plenty of opportunities to move around the outside. Quarterbacking duties will likely fall to Dalton Yoder, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore who played quarterback, tight end and receiver last season. Grant McEwen, turning out for his senior year at 5-11 and 180, has also been taking reps under center as well as at most of the skill positions. “They’re both great, and both great kids to work with, too,”

Thibault said. “Practice has been pretty simple.” Nine players return to the team on offense, though Thibault pointed out that a few of those may be beat out by younger players before the first game. Taylor Hicks, an All-League running back last season with around 900 rushing yards on 115 carries, moves to fullback this year, with Dakota Robbins and Mason Gaul running on the opposite wings. Konner Crawford, Logan Holbrook, Gabe Fuentes and Connor Vermilyea will all shift around the receiver and tight end positions, and Danny Echtle and Austin Eaton return on the offensive line.

In a Central 2B League that seems to get tougher every year, Winlock hopes it can finally break the funk that’s been around the program. With Mike Voie entering the third year of his second tenure for the Cardinals, he’s got a different feeling heading into this season. “There’s a definitely positive atmosphere around practice and these kids work hard,” Voie said. “It’s a different feel this year, in the past year I think we got intimidated but these guys aren’t going to back down.” Winlock returns five starters on both offense and defense and adds a state championship-winning piece from Wyoming to hopefully bolster their ranks. Rochester Ready for Foray Into 2A Ranks By The Chronicle Rochester finally found their coach, as Eric Snelson galvanized the Warriors to a 6-4 record and the postseason after years of rough seas. Snelson comes back for a his second campaign without running back Tyler Yarber and Tyler Gedney but plans to reload instead of rebuild as Rochester moves up to the 2A classification. "That change means different sizes of squads that we'll face but the kids have been in the weight room and have gotten a lot stronger in preparation for the 2A ranks," Snelson said. "During this summer 35-40 kids were doing conditioning and training in the summer and I believe they're getting as prepared as they possibly can." Senior Juan Jimenez will take the snaps for the Warriors this season as a mobile and throwing threat after spreading 2013 as a wide receiver. Fellow senior Wyatt Singer will move from his all-league spot at tight end to running back where he should be able to lower his massive shoulder for a few extra yards. "The chemistry the kids have had and the character they have in the weight room has been great," Snelson said. "I enjoy watching this team and seeing them interact and that's going to pay dividends as the season moves on."

Swilley Takes Over Defending League Champion Beavers By The Chronicle For the first time in four years, Tenino will be without coach Jeff Zenisek and SWW 1A Evergreen MVP Zack Chamberlain. But don't worry. The Beavers have reinforcements. Zenisek moved on to coach at 4A Thomas Jefferson while Chamberlain graduated, so Tenino brought in North Thurston defensive coordinator Randy Swilley. Swilley’s experience includes a five-year head coaching stint with Hoquiam and a four-year stint with Yelm "It's been great," Swilley said. "The kids are wonderful and the town is extremely supportive. Everything done there is for the kids. The kids have also been really open-minded and I feel like I have my best coaching staff." He brings his single-wing offense to the Beavers, who have plenty of talent to carry out the Xs and Os. "There's very few people that run that in the state," Swilley said. "It's one of the oldest offenses there is. It's a different-looking offense and people are flying around everywhere." We can actually scrimmage 11-on-11, instead of 11-on-6.” Pe Ell and Willapa Valley each have six starters, on both sides of the ball, back from last year, which has led to some good competition for starting spots.
