Rodeo to Bring Cowboy Flair to Southwest Washington Fair By The Chronicle
For more than a few visitors to the Southwest Washington Fair, the Saturday night rodeo is the highlight of the week — with the action of cowboys, bucking mounts and a lively crowd an event to look forward to all year long. “It’s one of the largest events going on at the fair every year,” said Sybil Kuhn, a member of the Lewis County Fair Rodeo Committee. “It always has been, and we want to make sure it continues.” Last year, the rodeo sold more than 2,500 tickets, a turnout organizers said was a huge success. The addition of a wild horse race drew the attention of many spectators, Kuhn said. “That was a nice surprise for the attendees and that definitely brought in some new interest,” she said. “Everybody really enjoyed it.” The rodeo will kick off at 6 p.m. on Aug. 17. Events will include bull riding,
saddle and bareback bronc riding, breakaway roping and wild horse races. Kuhn said organizers are also working on adding mutton busting to the show. Fair manager Tamara Hayes said last year’s rodeo was a huge hit, and fair backers are trying to build off of its popularity. “It was so energetic to have the rodeo be such a success and have the crowd enjoy it,” she said. “It was one of the best nights I’ve had with the fair. … With the turnout and excitement from last year, I just hope we keep that energy growing.” Hayes said rodeo organizers have upped the winnings this year, with the goal of getting the best cowboys available, and sponsors have been lining up to add their support. The Professional Wild Horse Racers Association will be holding a circuit event at the rodeo, while the rest of the events are organized locally by the Rodeo Committee. Kuhn said a year’s worth of work has gone into making the rodeo a success.

Rodeo fun at the Southwest Washington Fair Rodeo in Chehalis, Wash., on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017. “We have a meeting once a month and then as we get closer we have a meeting every week,” she said. “We all bring different ideas and coordinating. ... There’s
so many hours involved trying to put together a 3-hour event for the enjoyment of everyone. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone come out.”

A Friendly Face for the Fair LIVING LOGO: For More Than 50 Years, Little Miss Friendly Has Welcomed All to the Southwest Washington Fair By Will Rubin wrubin@chronline.com
As the calendar flips from July to August, a few universal truths come into play. There will be football on television each week until February. Back to school sales will fill the youngest generation with a mix of dread and anticipation. A new living logo will soon be chosen for the Southwest Washington Fair.
Natalie Butler, 8, reacts Tuesday after learning she would be the 2018 Little Miss Friendly. That last certainty comes in the form of the Little Miss Friendly contest, a staple of the Southwest Washington

Fair since 1968. Girls between the ages of 8 to 10 are eligible to be chosen by a panel of judges for a yearlong reign that includes serving as an ambassador for the Southwest Washington Fair during the event itself and at numerous festivities around Lewis County. Finalists are chosen prior to the fair and go through a selection process that includes questions about their favorite school subject and fair activities. They meet local stakeholders and hand out stickers promoting the fair. Finally, on opening day, the ceremonial cape is passed down from the outgoing Little Miss Friendly to the girl who will take her place. The reigning Little Miss Friendly, Natalie Butler, recently completed third grade at her elementary school in Chehalis. After being crowned the winner at the 2018 Southwest Washington Fair, Butler told The Chronicle that she most enjoyed attending parades to hand out candy, while pocketing a bit for her own sweet tooth. “The girls who apply are always so excited about the fair, and they love meeting and talking to people,” said Sue Barlow, who is entering her third year as lead coordinator of Little Miss Friendly. “They attend about nine parades and at least two or three coronations each year, as well as a num-

ber of community events. I often get emails and text messages from people in the community asking if Little Miss Friendly can come. Barlow’s niece previously served as Little Miss Friendly, which led Barlow to join the ranks of volunteers who help make the event possible. The panel of judges — Miss Lewis County Rebecca Ford, Lewis County Dairy Ambassador Montanna Heinricher and three members of the local Kiwanis club — sift through a pile of initial applications that can number in the dozens, though Barlow said last year’s pool included about 10 girls. “Kids are super busy these days, and it’s a big commitment, but they’re always excited when they get chosen,” Barlow said. “One thing all of the past Little Miss Friendly winners have enjoyed throughout their year is participating in the Miss Lewis County program. They always get a kick out of being on the stage with all those girls and getting to dance with them. It’s just so much fun.” For more information about Little Miss Friendly, including a list of all the past winners dating back to 1968, visit southwestwashingtonfair.org/events/littlemissfriendly. Winning Without Walking in the Annual Diaper Derby By Will Rubin wrubin@chronline.com
Parents who can’t wait for their children to start earning their keep can put their young offspring to work by entering them in the annual Diaper Derby at the Southwest Washington Fair. The races begin at noon on Thursday at Stage South — registration opens an hour before the first heat. Toddlers ages 14 months and under are eligible to compete for the title of fastest crawler in Southwest Washington. The prizes made available include hotel rooms and tickets to watch the Seattle Mariners, so judges are on hand to make sure nobody throws a tantrum for the wrong reasons. Contestants in the Diaper Derby must remain on their hands and knees for the entire length of the race. Parents cannot physically help their children cross the finish line and can only encourage their little ones from behind said line. The event has been sponsored by local radio outlet KELA/KMNT for more than 20 years. The field of entries often eclipses 30 and can reach three dozen, depending on overall fair attendance. We have no control over the birth population in Lewis County throughout the year, so it just depends on who shows up,” said Larry Miner, market manager for KELA/KMNT. Miner said he’s seen parents use all
kinds of methods while trying to will their kids down the track. Often times, toys such as stuffed animals are dangled as motivation for the speedy tykes. More often than not, audience members are entertained by watching parents try to coach their kids from the sidelines, only to be ignored. Nobody goes home empty-handed, since every competitor receives a goodie bag. “Somebody threw something attached to a string down in front of their baby once,” Miner said I think it was a baby bottle, and they pulled it toward the finish line at the other end. Nothing too exciting, other than that. They’re just trying to get their attention in some way, by clapping or whistling while calling their name.” The concept of a Diaper Derby is not unique to Lewis County — Miner said he knows of one that takes place in Albany, Oregon. The Cowlitz County Fair in Longview hosted one last month. Competition aside, the goal is to put together an hour-long event that is fun for all and a highlight of the annual fair experience. “I’ve done other ones in locales not in Washington,” Miner said. “I’ve done a pretty baby contest before, but those are dangerous, because that involves judging them. Everyone thinks their baby is the cutest, right?” For more information about the Diaper Derby, visit southwestwashingtonfair. org/events/contests or call 360-740-1495.

Zepparella, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute band, will perform at the Southwest Washington Fair this year. A large assortment of tribute and cover bands will be playing the Saloon Stage throughout the week too, starting with High Tide, a Beach Boys cover band, which will perform at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Wednesday. Pleasant Valley Sunday, a tribute to The Monkees, will play noon and 3 p.m. Thursday. Paperback Writer, a tribute to The Beatles, will play 3 and 6 p.m. Friday. Pat Slusher, marketing coordinator for the fair, said they expect a full house for the Paperback Writer show, considering the popularity of The Beatles’ music. 80’s Daze — a band that covers all things 1980s — will play three shows Saturday at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Closing out the slew of tribute and cover bands will be Zepparella, an all-female tribute to the music of Led Zeppelin at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Slusher said that after the band Hell’s Belles, an all-female AC/DC tribute, brought the house down last year, it’s becoming somewhat of a tradition to get an allfemale rock cover band to close out the concert series. “Clementine”, the leader and drummer for the band, said they formed about 15 years ago in San Francisco. “The shows just keep getting more fun. Which is amazing. I think it’s just a testament to the great music and to these amazing songs that we can do it for so long and still get so much out of it,” she said.
16 • Southwest Washington Fair 2019 • The Chronicle, Centralia/Chehalis, Wash. - Thursday, August 8, 2019
Led Zeppelin’s tendency toward improvisation during their sets allows Zepparella the chance to really explore the music on their own. Clementine said the band started when she started to explore the music on her own, in attempt to perfect her drumming. But as that continued, she figured, as long as she was putting in the work, she may as well turn it into a live show, and she recruited some friends to come aboard with her. “I love playing fairs, because you get to play for youngsters. I’m always so bummed out that people can’t bring their kids to shows and music venues,” she said, saying how important live rock was to her personally when she was under 21. “I think it’s great for young girls to see women playing music, and I think it’s great for young boys to see women playing music,” she added, saying they also recently launched the Zepparella Learning Channel on YouTube, where they walk viewers through how to play Zeppelin songs. Numerous acts and shows will be occurring at locations throughout the fair all week. Entertainment at the grandstand costs an additional fee to attend. That’ll include a demolition derby Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon; cage fights on Friday and a rodeo and wild horse races Saturday.
New Food Vendors Coming to the Fair By Cody Neuenschwander cneuenschwander@chronline.com
Want chocolate-covered bacon on a stick? Silly question, of course you do. That’s one of the new menu options added by the roster of food vendors setting up shop at the upcoming Southwest Washington Fair. Pat Slusher, marketing coordinator for the fair, said that four new vendors will be there this year, bringing the total to 40. The new spots will offer specialties like Indian tacos and fry bread; custom pizzas; the aforementioned bacon and cheeseburgers with donuts as the bun. Additionally, the acclaimed Port Angeles seafood joint Kokopelli Grill will bring a trailer to serve their award-winning salmon chowder and crab cakes. “You know what a corndog is, right?”
Slusher asked a Chronicle reporter who was, in fact, very familiar with the intricacies of a corndog. “Imagine instead of a hotdog inside the corn breading, imagine a sausage made of real lobster.” Other than the new options, all the familiar fair food will be for sale. “All the stuff people love — elephant ears and shaved ice and jumbo corndogs and onion burgers and all those things people just love, they’re all here,” Slusher said. There’s a strategy to the placement of food vendors — fortunately, with any annual event, planners can fall back on the tried and true placements of years’ past. Still, when procuring new vendors, fair officials need to make sure they’re not saturating the market of any one cuisine. For example, a couple spots specializing in hamburgers is necessary, said Slusher, due to the high demand for a good burger at the fair.
Dig into some delicious strawberry shortcake at this years fair. But, a couple spots specializing in less common kinds of cuisine likely wouldn’t pull in the customer base needed to make their stay at the fair worth it. So, organizers are sure to keep their unique vendors just that — unique.
Chronicle File Photo
“People always want to come and eat their favorites, but they always say ‘what’s new?’ … So we always try to change something around a little bit, or have current vendors introduce new products,” said Slusher.
