Did You Under the sea! Know?
The tiny little puffer fish blows itself up to several times its normal size when threatened. Some species are covered in hundreds of tiny, extremely poisonous spines that stand on end when it expands, making it deadly for any predator to eat or touch.
Seahorses are truly unique, and not just because of their unusual equine shape. They are among the only animal species on Earth in which the male bears the unborn young.
Jellyfish have no brain, no blood, and no nervous system. Their senses are primitive and consist of a neural net, eye spots that can sense light from dark, and chemosensory pits that help them identify potential prey. A shark may grow and use over 20,000 teeth in its lifetime.
Green turtles can migrate more than 1,400 miles to lay their eggs.
Penguins "fly" underwater at up to 25 miles per hour. A baby blue whale gains about 150 pounds each day.

Healthy Hometown

Congratulations Cheyllyn! Winner of the 2011 Healthy Hometown Hero Contest!
by Cheyllyn C. of Centralia I selected Melissa Bostick as my hometown hero for several reasons. Melissa continues to be influential in my journey to a healthier lifestyle by being an inspiration to not only me and my mom, but to all the women that have memberships to her club. When I first joined her gym in March 2010, Melissa became Cheyllyn, 6th grader, and her not only my coach hero Melissa! but a friend from the very beginning. Melissa is encouraging and she is your biggest cheerleader when it comes to making a lifestyle change with your eating and exercising habits. In the very beginning I asked Melissa why she became a Curves owner since I was interested in hearing her story and what motivated her to live a healthy lifestyle. Melissa shared with me that in 2002 she was diagnosed with a heart defect and the doctor told her if she did not take care of herself, she would not live a long life. At this time, Melissa was 73 pounds heavier than she is today. Although Melissa walked for exercise prior to this, it was not enough to keep her motivated and stay on track with living a healthy lifestyle. Melissa was raised in Tennessee, where there is plenty of good southern cooking! Melissa soon realized by eating fried 6 • June 2011 • Southwest Washington Family

foods and fast food, she was not eating right which was taking years off her life. Although Melissa does not drink or smoke she knew how she was eating was not healthy. Melissa made a choice to make a lifestyle change. Although it is not always easy to eat a healthy diet and exercise daily, Melissa will repeat to you that being healthy is a choice - you either choose to be healthy or you don't - I made the choice to be healthy by joining her gym and I am so glad I did! Some of the benefits of choosing a healthy lifestyle I have experienced are: I have become more physically strong, I have less stress in school, and I have not been sick as much as I used to. Melissa tells me that if you feel good physically, you will be strong mentally, which I firmly believe since I get great grades in school! During my year at Curves, I have learned a lot about this amazing woman. She is married to a wonderful husband and has 2 grown kids and this year she turned the wonderful 50 and looks great! You would not know it if you saw her, but she also has grandkids that she will brag about every chance she gets! Not only is she an amazing wife, mother and grandma, she is my inspiration! Melissa has been a Curves owner for nine years now and she has approximately 174 members at her club. Melissa will tell you that her members are the ones that keep her ·motivated because she also reaps the benefits of their hard work by seeing the transformation from fat and flabby to fit and healthy. She wishes all women would take the time to give to themselves for a better lifestyle. Melissa's greatest wish is for all her members to achieve their goals of being the best they can be and be in good health. Melissa's motto is "you will save a lot of money on medical bills when you lead a more productive life - prevention gives quality." Melissa, you are my home town hero because you encourage me to be the best I can be and you are a living example of walking the talk. Thank you for all you do for me, my mom, my aunt, my grandma Linda and all of your other members!
Thank you to all of our participants! SWWF
Happy Father’s Day:
Supermarket Sweep: I am not a fan of the self checkout at grocery stores. However, I may finally give in if any local retailers get these handheld scanners. How could grocery shopping get any more fun?!? (And, no, sadly my giddy excitement is not sarcastic!) A new addition to some supermarket chains is the introduction of the portable scanner that enables shoppers to scan and bag items as they shop. Consumers walk around the store and select their items. An easy click of a button scans each item, then the shopper simply bags it as he or she goes. When a shopping trip has ended, the consumer proceeds to one of the self-checkout aisles and scans a barcode to signal that it is the end of the shopping trip. The shopper then selects a method of payment, follows the instructions and pays the bill. He or she then goes to the car with all items already bagged. I can’t wait to go ‘play’ at the grocery store. The only problem is, if you bruise the fruit or smash your loaf of bread, you have no one else to blame!
Try a new twist on the old tie. A tie that you don’t have to, well, tie. Purchase iron-on tie appliques and turn ordinary t-shirts into black tie attire. Make Dad your guest of honor at a family dinner.
Color Blindness: Color Blindness: Color blindness is more accurately called color vision deficiency. It is very rare for a person to be completely blind to any type of color and see only in black and white. Rather, color blindness is often a condition of having difficulty discerning between different shades of colors. There may be deficiencies in different hues, especially red and green. Scientific data indicates that males are more inclined toward color blindness. SWWF

And Baby Makes
4!
Three Musketeers are moving over (and squishing together) to make room for a highlyanticipated fourth member! Inauguration: October. 10 • June 2011 • Southwest Washington Family
by Lindsay J. Stewart of Centralia y, oh my - what a difference eight years makes. In pregnancy, planning, logistics, gear and most shockingly: SPACE. When, my husband, Josh, and I were preparing for our son Max, eight years ago, we had books stacked to the rafters covering every topic from what to expect, how to prepare, and who to select as a doctor... to what to buy, where to deliver, when to start saving for college and how to diaper. As young, first-time parents we were also compelled to buy and/or register for it ALL - throwing all pre-pregnancy common sense completely out the window. I tracked down a beautiful, shabby-chic crib (this was the trend then, I swear) way too many miles from our apartment in Beverly Hills that required a U-Haul trailer rental and a tank of gas to pick up, and approximately four hours of assembly. I made my own patterns for the dramatic, over-sized crib bumpers, blankies and bedskirts, scoured the garment district in downtown LA until I found the perfect material, then sewed the entire ensemble together. It was just like the $900 set I had spotted in a boutique, but better. I had made it all on my own - forsaking sleep for a month to complete it. (Something a mother pregnant with her second child would never in a million years give up!) We researched mattresses, baby monitors with built-in movement and sound monitors, carseats, pack ‘n plays, high-chairs, bottles, nursing pads, swings, diapers, and every single rattle, Boppy and genie Babies ‘R Us suggested to us and deemed necessary. I even bought scientist grade, athome lead test kits for the crib as well as the baseboards running the entire parameter of the place. We were living in a large, two-bedroom apartment. And we filled it with baby stuff. Jump ahead several years to our home in Centralia. Even more space and more closets than I had ever dreamed of. Daily trips to Costco would only make a dent. Max had his own walk-in closet and a gigantic bedroom. And we filled it with little boy stuff. Fast forward to present day to our apartment in New York City. Less space than ever before, plus Luc, (our 85 pound chocolate Lab who thinks he’s a chihuahua), plus a baby on the way. While planning for Baby Stewart #2, we quickly realized it wasn’t just the major eight-year gap between our children that would require some personal adjustment and mental re-programming. (Even though I’m repeating history being eight years senior to my little brother, Jordan.) It was the space, or lack thereof, that accompanies our urban daily life and city living that would experience the most dramatic overhaul. We happen to function in our space as a well-oiled machine and simply love it. However, this isn’t for everyone, I can assure you. Our limited closets and under-bed spaces have turned
M
into metropolitan basements storing Christmas decorations, suitcases, tools, tents, air mattresses and 50 pound bags of Pedigree. Costco trips now take the spare end table drawer hostage and overflow the armoire - our sacred, remaining few pieces of vacant, apartment real estate. Somehow, I’m able to conceal it all. Except for the pallets of toilet paper and paper towels hanging from the ceiling. We tell our friends it’s art. Sure, the pregnancy is different than before. I’m eight years older and will have my second baby amid 35-year-old-firsttime-moms. In California, we drove or took the bus. In NYC I walk everywhere and get to experience pregnancy-related swollen ankles and sausage like toes. On the upside, however, when I do take the crowded train, I rock this baby bump and marvel as my fellow passengers leap from their seats, and shuffle out of the way - parting a red-carpeted aisle like the Red Sea just so I can sit down. The logistics this go around will be a dream. When I go into labor, I’ll walk ten blocks south and four blocks east. No need to worry about rush-hour traffic, a dead battery, construction or inclement weather. The baby gear has changed entirely. You call that a stroller!? That’s not a stroller - that’s nicer than my first car. Again, the space, people. The space has changed the most for us. Maybe this is something you come to terms with when planning for the second baby - or maybe this is strictly a paired down approach (albeit extreme) to city dwellers: Babies are *this* big. It’s their stuff that requires a warehouse. And it’s really not about money either. Three bedroom apartments don’t have that much more space! We’ve looked - trust me. While pregnant with this baby I have mastered the art of shelving, lifting and taking all things upward. We’re skipping the crib and heading straight for bunkbeds. Literally. They were delivered last week. Lots of drawers underneath the bottom bunk for clothes and toys and a new dresser standing as tall as Josh. The baby will sleep in a portable bassinet at first and then will graduate to Max’s bunkie but within, smaller pop-up walls designed to keep a baby in a smaller area on a twin bed. This will be a great segue to the good old-fashioned guard rails we had as kids. We learned not to roll out of bed at night smacking our face on the nightstand and showing up to school with a fat lip drinking out of a straw. (Ok, maybe this only happened to me.)
We’re looking into diaper services since diaper genies never proved to be that genius. Josh is dreaming about skipping the stroller entirely and slinging it wherever we go. There’s no denying the differences in space and location this family has experienced in eight years. There’s no comparing better to worse, more to less, or ideal to less ideal. It’s all an experience. Luckily our current, tight quarters happen to be in a city where we spend a large portion of our day out and about! Moving over and making room for a new person after eight years isn’t really even a new chapter - it’s a new story altogether for The Stewarts. A story guaranteed to make the four of us laugh hysterically at every twist, turn and bump along the way SWWF - I’m guessing even more than the one before! Lindsay Stewart, 30, from Centralia, currently living in New York City, writes freelance pieces pertaining to family adventures, encouragement and human interest. She loves visiting all the museums and parks NYC has to offer with her husband, Josh, and son, Maxwell, 7. Lindsay loves to entertain, cook and listen to live music. She says every morning is like Christmas morning waking up in her favorite city.

Jason was having a bad day on the soccer field, yelling out criticisms to his teammates. "Settle down, Jason," warned his coach. "Give the others a break. It's not all about you. Share the ball or I'm going to have to pull you from the game." Hearing this, Jason ran screaming at two of the other players, pushed one down and kicked the ball over the fence. Needless to say, he was pulled from the game. The trip home was no fun for his mom as she listened to him complaining about the other kids and how unfair the coach was treating him. All she could think about was that her son had forgotten their talks that it is more important to be a good person and a good sport than it is to be a soccer star. The next day, Mom made phone calls to the coach and to several of the other team mothers. "I need your help to teach Jason the importance of becoming a good person rather than just a good soccer player. Would you be willing to charge Jason if he calls for rides to games? You would? Oh, thank you so much." Mom then had a discussion with Jason. "I take you to your soccer games because it's fun for me. Your last game wasn't fun. I was embarrassed by your behavior. I will drive you to your game again some day after the coach tells me that you have become a good sport." "How am I supposed to get to the games if you're not driving me?" "Well, sweetie, that's something I was wondering about as well." "I'll just get a ride with some of the other guys." After making several calls, Jason yelled, "This is a rip off! All the other moms want to charge me to ride with them. They don't even care if the team loses! This stinks!" Mom held the line. After several weeks and Jason having spent $20.00 on rides, the coach called with a good report and lavish thanks to this courageous mother. The remaining games were a lot more fun for both Jason and his mother. SWWF ~ Charles Fay, Love & Logic Institute

Baby Bites
by Bridget Swinney, MS, RD Meadowbrook Press, 2007 Recommended for: Parents Baby Bites is a very informative book that covers a multitude of information about feeding your children, from newborn to toddler, and also includes a few tid-bits for older children. This book walks an expectant mom through the choice of breast feeding versus formula, and the pros and cons of both. It also gives some helpful tips about challenges she may come across, such as the early days of breast feeding, baby issues and how to cope, dieting/losing baby weight, the mothers transition back into work, pumping and storing, as well as creating guidelines for the child's caregiver. I found that the section which explains the nutrition for all age groups and how it effects growth during different stages of their life, was very helpful and interesting. Within this section, many "fad" diets are discussed, as well as pointers on how to create diets for children with allergies or hyperactivity. My favorite parts of this book were the recipes offered, ideas on how to have your kids help in the kitchen or at the store, and also how to deal with picky eaters. The back cover says "Finally, it's all in one book," and I would undoubtedly have to agree

with that. There is a lot of information in Baby Bites, and it's certainly a good source of information for a mom who is interested in breast feeding and making baby food. I would rate this book at a three and a half, because it could be a little too overwhelming for a first time mom. However, having three children, there were a lot of helpful pointers that I know I can use with each of my children. I would suggest this book if you are interested in shaping your child's diet and creating a meal plan for your family. Baby Bites will certainly give you the overall tools you need to do so.

A capsule is a small container. Your choice of capsule depends on where you want to store it for the next two years.
At the end of a long day, it may seem that time is passing very slowly and that nothing seems to change. In fact, things are changing all of the time. Look at a picture of you from three years ago. How have you changed? Do you have any school papers from three years ago? How has your schoolwork changed?
A current copy of SWW Family magazine
The front page of The Chronicle on the day you seal your time capsule
If you plan to bury it, then use a waterproof container, such as a large glass jar or plastic box as your time capsule. Before burying it, wrap it in a plastic bag that you knot tightly. If you bury your time capsule, be sure to make a map or write directions that remind you where you buried it.
Be sure to label your time capsule with the following information:
3+3+3 14 + 6 + 4
4+2+4
If you’ll be storing your time capsule in a closet or attic, you can use a small cardboard box, or any covered container.
15 + 5 + 9
11 + 6 + 7
12 + 12 + 8

Mrs. Thierry, 8th Grade, Centralia Middle School I teach 8th grade Language Arts, Writing Enrichment and Reading. I started my teaching career at CMS in the Fall of 2003. I love it when my students self-monitor the culture in our class. I have a "No Negativity" policy, and our classroom runs on the Foundation of Fabulosity. I will never forget the first time I heard one of my students tell another to take his bad attitude outside and to bring back a better one. That was seven years ago ... and to this day, students still monitor the negativity in my room and send it outside to be purged and exchanged for positive words, thoughts and behaviors. My husband is serving his 15th year in the U.S. Army and we have three pre-teens. I love to work in my yard and walk at Capitol Lake with my Lhasapoo, Rook. - Mrs. Thierry

Job Well Done Teachers! "Mrs. Thierry is my favorite teacher. She makes learning fun and interesting. She cares about her students so much she stays after school to help them with tutoring and also has a reading club and another club. I am in both clubs and they are amazing. I am going to miss her so much next year when I will not have her as a teacher. I know she deserves to be nominated. She is truly amazing!" ~ Alondra V., Nominator

Honorary MentionS Mr. Ashmore, 4th grade, Olympic Elementary
I have taught 4th grade at Olympic Elementary for 5 years. I have been teaching for 6 years. I come to school everyday with a smile on my face, ready to engage students and help them learn. Everyday brings a new challenge to help students grow and learn life skills that hopefully help them as they go through school. Teaching in elementary school has been the best – students come to school ready to learn. Knowing that I can make a difference in their life is truly the best feeling I have and a challenge I look forward to accomplishing everyday. Outside of teaching, I coach high school basketball and I coach youth basketball and football. I have four children, two in "I would like to nominate my teacher because he is college, one in high school, one in 5th grade. Spending time with funny and kind but at the same time helps us learn." ~ Cirstyn E., Nominator my family is something I enjoy doing. ~ Mr. Ashmore

"I would like to nominate my teacher. She is very sweet, always helps us and always lets us know that we are doing a good job. She said that we are one of her best classes that she's had in all her years of teaching. I believe she deserves this nomination." ~ Natalya M., Nominator
I've been teaching at Napavine for 27 years. This year I have 1st grade and Thank you will loop with them to 2nd grade in the teachers! fall. Great kids, great parents, great colleagues, that's Napavine. My best moments are watching my students succeed and to hear, "okay, I get it Mrs. Fay" or "Can I read now?" I love being a part of their life's journey. My husband Bob is a retired teacher. We have four grown sons, five granddaughters and one grandson. I enjoy traveling, family and get SWWF aways to the beach. ~ Mrs. Fay

WHAT DO YOU NEED?
Try adding glow in the dark paint or glitter to jazz up your creation!
• A Mold (toilet paper roll, ice cube tray) • 2 1/2 cups Plaster of Paris • 1 cup water • Waxed paper • Tempera Paint (variety of colors) or food coloring • Mixing bowl and spoon • Rubber spatula • Cooling rack • Duct Tape CHOOsiNg A MOlD! Many household items can be used • Plastic Cups as your mold: a paper towel roll, toilet paper roll, dixie cups, muffin or cupcake pans, silicone baking trays, cookie cutters, small sand molds, soap molds, film canisters, ice cube trays or popsicle molds. *For tubular molds line with waxed paper so the chalk can easily slide out.
26 • June 2011 • Southwest Washington Family
Aren't sidewalk chalk drawings fun?!? Construct a hopscotch game, draw a family portrait, or practice addition and multiplication. Try making some at home with a few household items!
WHAT TO DO?
1. Cut the paper towel roll in half (For thinner chalk you can cut the paper towel roll length wise, pull together and tape along the seam). Use the duct tape to tape off one side of each tube and cut to size wax paper to insert into the paper towel roll. 2. Using your mixing bowl and spoon, slowly mix slowly 2 1/2 cups of Plaster of Paris with 1 cup of water (*Consistency should be as thick as frosting). Once combined pour some in 5 plastic cups. Add a different color of Tempera Paint to each cup. 3. Place each roll tape side down on a level surface. Pour mixture into each tube (tap the sides of each tube lightly to release air bubbles). 4. The plaster will set in about about an hour, remove roll and wax paper (check for hardness by squeezing rolls). Place all your chalk on a cooling rack and let it dry at least 24 hours before using. Helpful Tips: Stirring the ingredients for a longer time will make your color more solid! (If your trying to make colors really bright by adding lots of paint/food coloring, it may cause chalk to be soft, not clumpy. So be careful on how much paint you add!) Make sure you fill your molds when your mixture is a liquid, not clumps.
Caution: Sidewalk chalk making is messy, you may want to cover your chalk making area with newspaper. SWWF
