FROM THE DIRECTOR Museums are about art and people. In both areas, 2008-2009 was a banner year for the Chrysler. We hosted two of the most popular exhibitions in our history, added significant works to our collections, undertook important art conservation work, and shared our holdings with museums around the world. We also welcomed a record number of visitors, and offered an unprecedented number of programs designed to ensure that the works of art in our care are relevant and meaningful to them. A few years back the Museum adopted the Net Promoter Score, a widely used measure of customer satisfaction, as a means of tracking our success in serving our community. This year fully 93% of our visitors would “recommend the experience of the Chrysler with great enthusiasm” to others. In a world where most for-profit companies are thrilled with a score of 70%, we are delighted that the public is responding not just to the range and quality of our exhibitions and programs, but to the warmth of the welcome we offer. As you read this report, you’ll find full details of the past year’s programs, but at the start it is important to note two things. First, nearly everything that the Museum undertakes depends upon collaboration. During the past year, the Chrysler worked closely on joint programs with the Virginia Opera, Virginia Symphony, Virginia Stage Company, Todd Rosenlieb Dance, the Virginia Children’s Choir, the Norfolk Botanical Garden, and a broad range of other cultural and community organizations. We are particularly proud of our partnership with the City of Norfolk in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of “Massive Resistance” to school desegregation in Norfolk. And 2009 also marked the return of Art of Glass. Ten years after the great success of our first regional celebration of contemporary glass art, the Chrysler joined forces with the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, the Virginia Arts Festival, and 22 other arts affiliates from our area to once again make Hampton Roads a place of pilgrimage for glass lovers. Second, nothing that the Chrysler does would be possible without the hard work of the Museum’s dedicated staff, the commitment of our volunteers, or the generosity of our community donors. They deserve recognition and hearty appreciation. It is thanks to them that we can even begin to achieve our mission of “enriching and transforming lives” by bringing art and people together.

Welcomed 163,000 visitors—an increase of 35% over the previous year.

■

Earned a Net Promoter Score of 93% (up from 87% in 2007-2008).

Operated on a balanced budget of $7,184,569.

Benefited from the hard work of 63 full-time and 39 part-time colleagues.

Enjoyed the service of 114 dedicated volunteer docents and the support of nearly 3,900 Museum Members.

Hosted 25 interns from colleges and universities across the country.

Presented 18 special exhibitions, including American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell and Art of Glass 2—two of the most popular shows in the Museum’s history.

Marked the 50th anniversary of the end of “Massive Resistance” to public school desegregation in Norfolk with a series of special commemorations.

HIGHLIGHTS ■

Installed a new exhibition at the historic Moses Myers House highlighting Moses Myers’ role in the establishment of Norfolk as a major center for maritime commerce.

■

Renovated and reinterpreted our collection galleries devoted to Egyptian and African art.

■

Added 26 objects to the Museum’s permanent collection.

■

Conserved 11 objects in the collection, and welcomed our second NEH Conservation Fellow.

■

Lent 43 works to 25 museums in 9 countries.

■

Partnered with 23 area arts organizations, including the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia and the Virginia Arts Festival, to present Art of Glass 2, a region-wide celebration of contemporary glass.

Proudly continued our 70-year partnership with the City of Norfolk to bring great art and great experiences to our community.

CONSERVATION The highlight of the year in conservation was the completion of the Veronese altarpiece restoration project, which was performed while the painting remained on view in our Renaissance and Baroque Gallery. Visitors enjoyed watching the restoration process carried out by Conservator Mark Lewis and the Museum’s first National Endowment for the Humanities Conservation Fellow, Carlos Moya. While the treatment was underway, school groups and visitors of all ages had the opportunity to learn more about the process of restoration, as well as the technical examination and analysis involved. Once the restoration of the painting and its carved gilt frame were completed, the Chrysler loaned the altarpiece to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. There it was a highlight of the blockbuster exhibition Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese: Rivals in Renaissance Venice. Another focus of conservation this year has been a renewed interest in the Museum’s collection of historic and period frames. After surveying the frames in our collection, a number of important examples were slated for restoration. Several of the frames selected included those housing Charles Joseph Natoire’s Psyche Gathering the Fleece for Venus, and Luca Giordano’s Bacchus and Ariadne. Professional frame conservator Wayne Reynolds from the Julius Lowy Frame and Restoring Company of New York was contracted to carry out this work, assisted by the Museum’s conservators. In addition to restoring the best frames in our collection, the department has plans to replace a number of inappropriate examples with original period replacements. T.F. ACQUISITIONS The Chrysler received many generous gifts this year from both our biggest supporters and a few new ones as well. Of the 26 works we acquired, we were fortunate, indeed, to receive 18 of them as gifts. These ranged from a Tiffany daffodil lamp to a nearly life-size painting of two military musicians by Gari Melchers. Our eight purchases were discriminating—adding depth to our collections. They particularly complemented our military-themed holdings, expanded the artists represented in our contemporary glass collection, and built on our already strong holdings of beloved European artists such as Thomas Couture and Gustave Doré. EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS 2008–2009 was an extraordinary year for special exhibitions at the Chrysler. The year saw the debut of a pair of genuine blockbusters, American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell, generously sponsored by the Chrysler’s Business Exhibition Council, and Art of Glass 2, a regional celebration of contemporary glass mounted by the Chrysler, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia Arts Festival, and 22 other affiliate institutions. These two monumental efforts were complemented by a rich succession of more intimate “focus” exhibitions and installations unveiled in the Museum and at our Historic Houses. They included Fifty Years Later: The Lessons of Massive Resistance, created as part of the City of Norfolk’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of organized opposition to public school desegregation, first here at the Chrysler, then at the Norfolk History Museum; Moses Myers: Merchant of Norfolk, installed at our Moses Myers House; Dutch “Golden Age” Paintings in our Kaufman Furniture Gallery; and After Hours: Works by the Chrysler Staff in the Chrysler’s Waitzer Community Gallery.

This exhibition, drawn entirely from the Chrysler’s collection, consisted of 15 photographs from one of the world’s most renowned photographers, Ansel Adams. Inspired by the birth of Norfolk’s light rail system, this historical exhibit reviewed the city’s various modes of transportation since the time of the horse-drawn carriage. ■

This incomparable set by one of the leading silversmiths of Regency London exudes both the modern and ancient influences popular with artists of his era. The Museum was pleased to accept another year-long extension of the loan from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

REMBRANDT’S ETCHINGS: THE EMBRACE OF DARKNESS AND LIGHT MAY 16–AUGUST 17, 2008 IN NORFOLK SOUTHERN LARGE CHANGING GALLERY

During his lifetime, Rembrandt achieved unparalleled fame as a printmaker and is hailed today as one of the greatest etchers of all time. Drawn from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, this exhibition included more than 130 of the master’s etchings. It traced Rembrandt’s entire career as a printmaker, from the drama and technical razzle-dazzle of his early productions to the quiet mystery and poetry of his final works. ■

PRINTS FROM THE DAVID AND SUSAN GOODE COLLECTION MAY 16–AUGUST 31, 2008 IN THE PRINTS AND DRAWINGS GALLERY

In conjunction with the exhibition, Rembrandt’s Etchings, the Chrysler also showcased a complementary exhibition of

prints dating from the early 20th century to the present. Drawn from the personal collection of David and Susan Goode, this exhibition covered a wide variety of printmaking techniques and artists. ■

KAUFMAN FURNITURE GALLERY ONGOING SINCE ITS MAY 2008 OPENING

This installation features fine furnishings on loan from the late George M. and Linda H. Kaufman, one of our nation’s great collections of American decorative arts and Dutch Golden Age paintings. The display highlights the stylistic evolution of American furniture from the mid 18th to the early 19th century, and helps visitors understand the individual character of pieces produced in early America’s great furniture-making centers—Boston, Newport, New York, and Philadelphia. ■

CAMEO PERFORMANCES: MASTERPIECES OF CAMEO GLASS FROM THE CHRYSLER’S COLLECTION JUNE 29, 2008–JULY 1, 2010 IN THE DECORATIVE ARTS GALLERY

Highlighting the skills of master carvers and their sources of inspiration, cameo glass steals the spotlight in this show drawn from the Museum’s renowned glass collection. Exploring the history of cameo glass carving beginning with ancient Roman examples, this ongoing exhibition focuses on the popular resurgence of the technique in England during the late 19th century.

In the years before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, award-winning photographer Ben Fernandez documented his life—visually demonstrating King’s powerful messages. These photographs

serve as visual testimony of a dedicated photojournalist who gives the world a different view of Dr. King and the state of America during its transition towards equality in civil rights. ■

AMERICAN CHRONICLES: THE ART OF NORMAN ROCKWELL NOVEMBER 12, 2008–FEBRUARY 1, 2009 IN THE NORFOLK SOUTHERN LARGE CHANGING GALLERY

Drawn from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, this exceptional retrospective surveyed the career of America’s premier 20thcentury commercial illustrator and, arguably, its most beloved artist. The exhibition included 41 of Rockwell’s oil paintings, a group of drawings and posters including his famous Four Freedoms, and all 323 covers that the artist created between 1916 and 1963 for The Saturday Evening Post. The show was among the Chrysler’s best-attended exhibitions ever.

This intimate selection of signed photographs by the remarkable O. Winston Link recalled the majesty and splendor of steam-powered locomotives, as well as the nostalgia of an era gone by. The eighteen photographs were drawn from the extensive collection of Susan and David Goode, former chairman and CEO of Norfolk Southern.

Our keynote Art of Glass 2 exhibition was the first to detail the 40-year career of the Maestro of glassblowing. Lino Tagliapietra is widely credited with changing the course of contemporary studio glass through his passionate teaching and brilliant artistic vision. The 155 works on

display represented his finest work—from a roomful of floating glass boats to fiery vases and sculptures to delicate goblets and glass party favors called bonboniere. Many of the pieces came from the artist’s own collection and some had never before been displayed in public. ■

The Chrysler interspersed new among the old in this must-see Art of Glass 2 exhibition focusing on four contemporary artists. Katherine Gray’s repurposed glass constructs, Karen LaMonte’s haunting cast glass dresses, and Beth Lipman’s complex glass still-lifes were featured alongside objects in the Museum’s collection. Plus, Stephen Knapp installed two dazzling lightpaintings—one inside our galleries and one on the exterior wall near the Museum’s main entrance.

This masterful green pyramid was cast by the influential Czech husband-and-wife team of Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, who pioneered the use of glass as a medium for sculpture in the 20th century. This third Art of Glass 2 exhibition was loaned from the private collection of Lisa and Dudley Anderson and honored Norfolk’s 57th Azalea Festival’s NATO nation of 2009: the Czech Republic.

When the galleries and offices close, many employees of the Chrysler Museum of Art begin work in their private studios. This display in the Waitzer Community Gallery brought together the painting, sculpture, photography, and glass in our first-ever staff show. The diversity of their art echoed the span of influences within their workplace, and demonstrated the rich creativity of those who dedicate their lives to museums.

DUTCH “GOLDEN AGE” PAINTINGS JUNE 25, 2009–JANUARY 17, 2010 IN THE KAUFMAN FURNITURE GALLERY

Many of the Netherlands’ greatest 17thcentury painters are represented in this intimate exhibition of privately held gems from a collector in New York. Displayed among the fine antiques of the Museum’s Kaufman Furniture Gallery are oils by Gerard Ter Borch, Godfried Schalcken, and master portraitist Frans Hals. The highlight is a one-time genre painting only recently acknowledged as a self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn.

Our exhibition of Dutch "Golden Age" Paintings included a work that only recently was discovered to be far more than it originally appeared. EDUCATION The Chrysler enhances education in our region’s schools, colleges, and universities by creating experiences that integrate the Museum’s collection and exhibitions into the fabric of learning. This year, innovative interpretive programs, such as our Science of Glass tour with accompanying Art of Glass 2 glassblowing demonstrations, fostered deeper understanding and appreciation of the works of art in our collection and inspired a new generations of young artists. Programs for the public included an extensive series of regularly scheduled free tours, as well as our usual monthly programs for preschoolers, college students, and seniors. Partnerships with local arts organizations such as the Virginia Stage Company, the Virginia Opera, Todd Rosenlieb Dance, and the Virginia Arts Festival placed the Chrysler at the heart of the region’s arts community. Our Historic Houses focused guests’ attention on the critical importance of Norfolk with specially themed school programs, as well as three exhibits with a local focus. With the help of the Norfolk Historical Society, the Friends of Historic Houses, and a variety of other local historical institutions, the public enjoyed 88 different programs, including the weekly rotation of theme tours, the monthly Norfolk History Series lectures, and a host of special events. The Museum’s Jean Outland Chrysler Library assisted scholars, students, and the simply curious—2,486 patrons in total for 20082009. Throughout the year, the Library acquired 3,876 books, auction catalogs, films, and other materials, many of them donated. The Library also launched a regularly updated blog of Library news at http://chryslermuseumlibrary.blogspot.com.

Welcomed and taught more than 19,000 students and teachers through innovative tours that tie the Chrysler’s collection to learning across the curriculum, including civics, science, and art, of course! The demand for education programs at the Chrysler continues to grow.

Hosted an interactive student essay contest online in conjunction with American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell. Voting via the Museum website totaled more than 1,000 participants.

VISITOR SERVICES Visitor Services, founded in 2007, encompasses many areas focused on direct visitor interaction. WELCOME TO OUR GALLERIES The first Chrysler staff members that most Museum visitors encounter are our Gallery Hosts, friendly employees who open the Museum doors, greet visitors at our welcome desk, and answer questions throughout the Museum. They also help protect the Chrysler collection in the galleries. Gallery hosts have a variety of backgrounds—art history, customer service, security—but each focuses on providing our visitors with excellent assistance and an enhanced Museum experience.

A major accomplishment this year was the addition of a new welcome desk that combines the functions of admissions and information into one location. The mahogany and marble desk, designed and constructed by local finish carpenter Todd Webb, complements the Museum’s aesthetics and creates a centralized hub of activity in Huber Court.

No Museum visit is complete without a souvenir, and our Museum Shop continues to offer a wide variety of merchandise to help visitors remember their experience. The most popular items continue to be jewelry, books, glass, and stationery. This year’s popular Art of Glass 2 exhibition offered unique opportunities for special sales and trunk shows with glass jewelry artists. Total sales for The Museum Shop this year were $290,060, a 31% increase over last year.

SPECIAL EVENTS Even when the galleries close, the Museum hosts evening visitors at weddings, social events, theatre performances, or after-hours concerts. In the past year, the Chrysler hosted 52 weddings and social events, 35 performances, 11 business presentations/lectures, and two graduations. These rentals are in addition to the numerous educational and social events hosted by the Chrysler Museum. The revenue from these contracted rentals was $253,305. Since Visitor Services has so much direct interaction with our guests, we constantly analyze feedback from them, looking for ways to improve. Among them were upgraded seating, an improved Visitor Guide, and a change to our Sunday operating hours. As a result of responding to visitorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; requests, this year we saw yet another increase in our Net Promoter Score, a measure of how likely our guests would be to recommend the Chrysler to a friend. Our score this year was 93.35%, up from our fine rating of 87.88% in 2007-2008.

NOTES TO FINANCIAL STATEMENTS NOTE 1 - Organization, stewardship and summary of significant accounting policies The Chrysler Museum The Chrysler is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums. Located in Hampton Roads, a community of 1.5 million in southeastern Virginia, the Chrysler welcomes 160,000 annual visitors from around the world. The Chrysler operates on an annual budget of approximately $7 million and employs a staff of 103.

Accordingly, the net assets of the Museum are reported as follows: Unrestricted net assets Unrestricted net assets represent available resources over which the Board has discretionary control to use in operating the Museum in accordance with the limitations of its charter and bylaws. Unrestricted net assets include the operating fund and Board-designated funds. Board-designated funds are limited to Board-specified uses, and consist primarily of the reinvested proceeds from the sale of collection items.

The Museum is home to a world-class collection of over 35,000 paintings, sculpture, photographs, and decorative arts primarily assembled by industrialist Walter P. Chrysler, Jr. The Museum is particularly well known for its glass collection, one of the finest and most comprehensive anywhere.

Temporarily restricted net assets

The Museum also administers two Historic Houses, the Moses Myers House and the Norfolk History Museum, each of which is located in downtown Norfolk. The Moses Myers House, which was the residence of Norfolk’s first Jewish citizens, includes more than 70 percent of its original late-eighteenth-century furnishings.

Permanently restricted net assets

In addition to its fine permanent collection, the Chrysler presents each year a dynamic schedule of changing exhibitions and a wide variety of interpretive programs. Each is designed to make the works on view in the Museum galleries accessible and meaningful to a diverse audience. Through an active program of loans from its collection and through the professional involvement of its staff, the Museum maintains an active presence in the international museum community. The Museum is particularly proud of its record of community citizenship and good management. The Chrysler is a regular partner and collaborator with regional governments, businesses, educational organizations, and cultural groups, seeking to leverage resources to provide the highest quality service at the lowest cost. At the insistence of the Museum’s Trustees, the Chrysler operates every year on a balanced budget, and is virtually free of long-term debt. The Museum’s mission is to act as a catalyst. We bring art and people together to enrich and transform lives. A new free admission policy, adopted in September 2009, along with newly enhanced interpretive programming, ensures that the Museum is truly accessible to the community that we exist to serve. Financial Statement presentation The Museum’s financial statements are presented in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 117 (SFAS 117), Financial Statements of Not-forProfit Organizations. Under SFAS 117, the Museum reports information regarding its financial position and activities according to three classes of net assets: unrestricted net assets, temporarily restricted net assets, and permanently restricted net assets. Although the Museum adopted SFAS 117 for financial reporting purposes, in order to ensure the observance of limitations and restrictions placed on the use of resources available to the Museum, the Museum’s accounts are maintained in accordance with the principles of “fund accounting.” This procedure classifies Museum resources for accounting and reporting purposes into funds that are established in accordance with specified activities or objectives. Although separate accounts are maintained for each fund, for external financial reporting purposes, the funds have been grouped based on the presence or absence of externally imposed restrictions as to their use.

Temporarily restricted net assets represent resources whose use has been restricted by donors to a specific operating or capital need, or time period. Permanently restricted net assets represent resources that are subject to restrictions of gift instruments that require in perpetuity that the Museum invest the original gift with only the investment income derived therefrom being made available to the Museum for expenditure. Art collection In conformity with the practice followed by most museums, the collection is not presented in the accompanying statement of financial position. The value of accessions (collection items purchased by or contributed to the Museum) is reported, net of deaccession proceeds received from the sale of collection items, as non-operating expenditures in the accompanying statement of activities. The Museum is committed to applying the highest professional standards to the care and preservation of its unique collection. Accessions and deaccessions are approved by the Museum’s Board of Trustees and the proceeds from deaccessions are used solely for the acquisition of collection items. Additionally, in an effort to maintain the purchasing power of such proceeds, the Board has similarly designated the investment income earned on these funds. At June 30, 2009, the Museum’s collection was insured at a level deemed appropriate by management. Investments and total return, spending-rate policy The Museum records investments at fair value as determined by quoted market prices when available. Investments for which a quoted market price is not available are carried at fair value as determined by the underlying investment fund management. Such valuations are based upon judgments that reflect various factors including, but not limited to, market values when available, restrictions affecting marketability, operating results, financial condition of the investees and the price of recent transactions. Due to the inherent uncertainty of investment valuation, the fair values may differ significantly from the values that would have been used had a ready market for all investments existed, and the difference could be material. For the operating and permanently restricted endowment funds, the Museum utilizes a total return, spending-rate policy in order to provide portfolio management flexibility, preserve the purchasing power (real value) of the funds, and aid the Museum’s budgetary process. To meet these objectives, the Museum focuses on the overall return on investments, including interest, dividends, and net investment appreciation. For the Museum’s budgeting requirements, the Museum uses a spending-rate, currently 5.0%, applied to a five-year moving average of the applicable Board-designated and restricted funds’ fair value, to determine how much

Income in excess of the spending-rate formula is thus available, subject to original gift instruments, to maintain or increase the real value of the funds. The accounting for investment income depends upon the funds involved, as follows: Unrestricted net assets Investment income related to unrestricted accession funds is recorded as nonoperating income. Other unrestricted income, unless earned on investments subject to the spending-rate policy, is reported as income available for operations. The income on unrestricted funds subject to the spending-rate policy is recorded as available for operations up to the level indicated by the spending-rate policy, with any excess recorded as non-operating income. Temporarily restricted net assets Investment income on investments of temporarily restricted net assets is recorded as temporarily restricted income. Permanently restricted net assets Nonexpendable investment income is recorded as an increase in permanently restricted net assets. Investment income earned on operating endowments, up to the level indicated by the spending-rate policy, is recorded as unrestricted income with the excess recorded as permanently restricted income. Investment income earned on endowment accession funds remains with the accession funds until released from restrictions.

Use of estimates The preparation of financial statements in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and the disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements, and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Accordingly, actual results could differ from such estimates. Functional allocation of expenses The cost of providing the various program and supporting services has been summarized on a functional basis in the statements of activities and of operating expenses. In presenting the Museum’s natural classification of expenses on a functional basis, direct expenses are aggregated by function and indirect expenses, primarily facilities management and depreciation, have been allocated among the functional programs and services benefited.

NOTE 2 - Concentration of Credit Risk

Contributions

Financial instruments that potentially subject the Museum to concentrations of credit risk consist principally of temporary cash equivalents, temporary investments, and investment securities. To mitigate credit risk, the Museum’s cash and temporary investments are placed with highly regarded financial institutions, and the Museum’s investment securities are managed by professional investment management firms chosen (with the assistance of an investment consulting firm) for their sector expertise.

Contributions are recognized as revenues when pledged, or when received if unrelated to a pledge. The value of contributed collection items is shown net in the non-operating accessions line item.

NOTE 3 - Investments and investment income

Property and equipment The Museum building and Historic Houses are owned by the City of Norfolk. Most improvements and additions to the buildings have been funded jointly by the City and by Museum contributions restricted for such purposes. As the Museum does not have a formal lease with the City, the Museum has recorded such expenditures as non-operating items. Accordingly, no asset or related depreciation expense is recognized by the Museum in the accompanying financial statements for such expenditures. Furthermore, amounts have not been reflected in the accompanying statement of activities to reflect the donative use of the buildings. Furniture, equipment and fixtures are recorded at cost and depreciated using the straight-line method over periods ranging from three to ten years. Cash and cash equivalents The Museum considers all highly liquid investments with maturities of three months or less when purchased to be cash equivalents. Cash and cash equivalents for purposes of the statements of net assets and of cash flows exclude cash and cash equivalents managed by the Museum’s professional investment managers. Income taxes The Museum is exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code and has been determined to be an organization that is not a private foundation. Accordingly, no provision for income or excise taxes has been made in the accompanying financial statements.

In July 2004, the Museum established a revolving demand note with a commercial bank for $1,200,000 secured by certain Museum investment securities. As of June 30, 2009, the note balance outstanding was $361,696. The Museum is making monthly principal and interest payments of $10,000 (interest at 6.16%) until paid in full in October 2012.
