Hey Chargers! I hope you’ve all had amazing summers so far, full of fun, friends, family, and of course, service! We have had a month full of service events, from Kiwanis Fireworks Booth to Project 150, and I was thrilled to see that so many of you were willing to spend part of your summer volunteering. I was also so happy to see the amount of articles and visuals that were being sent in! Keep it up! Just because our summer is ending doesn’t mean that we don’t have anything to look forward to! I’m definitely looking forward to a new school year, and a new year with Key Club! I hope to see a ton of new faces at our first general meeting, as well as at our first event of the year, Camp Key Club! Camp Key Club is a new event, where we can all learn more about the different aspects of Key Club and meet new people, including the incoming freshmen! (Woah, I’m not a freshman anymore..) We still have a few more service opportunities for you to participate in this summer, which can be found on page 15! Hope to see you all there! Serving With Spirit,

Katrina Orevillo 3

What's up Clark Key Club! July has been a blast, especially since we were able to have our Summer Social! I'm glad to have met so many incoming freshmen over the past few weeks. In July, we were able to announce the first event of the new school year, called Camp Key Club, and preorders for this year's hoodies! The hoodies are $25 and $3 of your purchase will go towards Pediatric Trauma Program. Get your hoodies now while we count down to the first ever Camp Key Club! It is now August, which means that there is only one month of summer but fear not because when school starts, we will have our weekly meetings on Thursdays! I look forward to meeting the rest of the freshman during freshman orientation. Hope to see you all there and I hope to see all returning Key Clubbers at our annual Ice Skating Social! Remember to call us or beep us if you want to reach us, we're always here to help! With the power of love and friendship,

JULY 2016 5

kiwanis ARTICLE BY: SIN LI We helped sell fireworks at the Kiwanis booth. Many customers came by to purchase fireworks for the 4th of July. We helped them if they were indecisive and gave them information about the different fireworks we had. Overall, it was an interesting experience and I realized how many people didn’t know much about fireworks. My most favorite thing about working at the fireworks booth besides helping sell was getting to know more Key Clubbers from our own school better and from other schools too. We were stuck together for a very long time and it gave us a chance to hang out in between customers. We were able to become closer as members of Key Club and better friends overall.

Lastly, we got the experience the Las Vegas weather for the entire day. From super hot and sunny to super windy, we went through it all. The extreme weather took our volunteering to a whole new level, and all the more interesting. It was a very fun time volunteering at the fireworks booth this year.

ARTICLE BY: JEFFREY SEGELSTROM Waking up at 6 am to get ready for a 52 minute drive (15 miles) was painful. However, after actually making it to the fireworks booth, everything seemed to be quite nice. The set up of the actual booth was organized as fellow key clubbers from different schools worked together to overcome the truck load of pyrotechnics. There were very few customers on the first couple of days, yet, getting sales experience and being able to know the consumer in such a short amount of time was refreshing. On downtimes where there are no customers, one is able to bond with Kiwanis members as well as enjoy the time with the Key Clubbers from other schools. If it was not 100 degrees, this service event would be perfect for anyone with nothing to do in the summer.

Clark Key Club ARTICLE BY: MATTHEW WONG The Summer Social was an event at Desert Breeze Park where we did several activities. We designed the outsides of paper bags for service. We also had a water balloon fight with each other which was a lot of fun. Then we ate tacos that were made by Ms. Wong. We also got to pie the officers during the event for $2. This event was very enjoyable and a great way to see other Key Club members again!

ARTICLE BY: KATLYN WONG The summer social was held at Desert Breeze Park on July 16. Needless to say, it was a complete blast! We started off playing icebreakers and it was very fun, especially since the incoming freshman were there. Then we started doing our service project, which was to make lunch bags for Ronald McDonald house! Though my drawing skills are definitely subpar, I had lots of fun making several bags. I also noticed that almost everyone around me were making them PokĂŠmon themed, which makes sense because a lot people were simultaneously playing PokĂŠmon GO. Afterwards, we had our general meeting and had a water balloon fight! Everyone was ruthless; it was absolutely wild and everyone got soaked. We calmed down afterwards when we enjoyed our tacos, however, we began the pieing of our officers soon after we finished. I happened to get pied as well, and the shaving cream was smeared into my face. It even got into my nose and hair! What an experience. All in all, I was so happy to see everyone over the summer and bond even more with the club. I am definitely looking forward to the next social!

ARTICLE BY: TANDREANA CHUA At first, I wasn’t very excited about going to Project 150. I was happy to volunteer during the summer, but without knowledge of what Project 150 is or what they wanted us to do (scrub the floor with toothbrushes? Massage peoples' feet?), I didn’t know what I was getting into. My mind did a 180 (or was it 360) and my opinion changed completely when I actually got there. Of course, seeing my friends made the experience more fun than I expected it to be, but having the event coordinator explain what Project 150 was and how we were making such a huge impact to homeless teenagers by supplying them essentials to a better future made me really grateful for the opportunity to help! We helped count and organize school supplies, bathroom products, and clothes (which I liked doing because organizing is fun, kids). With everyone helping out, it was a quick and fun process. Everyone who worked there was extremely genuine and helped in any way they could (they gave us water and pretty smiles). Overall, I'm very, very happy I could participate in helping the community and was able to spend time with a group of wild Key Club members!!

ARTICLE BY: ANISH DEVATI Project 150 was truly a fulfilling service event. Before I begin, let me tell you a little bit about the organization and its values. Project 150 strives to supply our community's impoverished teenagers with the clothes, school supplies, hygiene products, and even the small accessories teenagers need to better assimilate into the high school atmosphere. Project 150's main goal is to help these teenagers graduate from high school and destroy the vicious cycle of poverty. This was definitely, for a lack of better terms, a humbling experience to partake in. Some of our responsibilities included taking inventory of the school supplies that were donated to us and organizing them into distinct boxes. Once we were done with that, we sifted through donated clothes and removed those that had stains, rips, and other unruly qualities. The damaged clothes were to be donated to other charities while the undamaged clothes were hung up to be later handed out at Project 150's free boutique. Now, I'm not gonna lie. Project 150's warehouse was very hot, and I was sweating horribly the entire time. But at the end of the day, I realized that my efforts would help another teenager just like me have new school supplies and maybe even a brand new wardrobe. When I realized that, the discomfort really went away. This was truly a memorable service event to partake in. It epitomized the core values of Key Club which are to give back and to make a difference. I was so happy that my efforts would help teenagers in our community have a better life. I would recommend this event to my friends, and I would definitely go again in the future.

STORY BY: DHIMANTHA DASWATTA When I joined key club, I would have never expected it to affect my life in the ways it did. Key club gave me a path, and it led me towards happiness. Doing service and meeting other people who enjoy doing the same thing as you is an amazing feeling! Key club is a more than a club, it's a family. It’s full of wonderful and kind people who will always have a positive influence on your life. Going to places I would have never thought I would have gone and doing things that I would have never expected to do. My past self wouldn't be able to recognize the me because of how much key club affected me! I love getting more involved in events and helping make a difference. Whether it was just physical labor or even just sitting somewhere and watching something, I knew that I was helping. Key club helped increase my self confidence, because for the first time in a long time, I had people who believed in me and my goals. Key Club taught me the importance of teamwork, and becoming more social and active. I’m always proud to yell out my love for key club, and I hope to all our incoming students they will find a love for the club too.

why should I go? Hey Key Clubbers! I know that some of you guys might be on the fence about going to this year's RTC, but I promise you that it is an event that you don't want to miss. For an incredibly reasonable price, you can spend the entire day getting to know your friends and Kiwanis family on a deeper level. If you don't already know too many people, no problem! RTC allows you to meet new faces from across the valley helping create bonds and memories that'll last a lifetime. From workshops, to service, to cheers and spirit, RTC is the embodiment of what Key Club truly is. At RTC, you will also have the opportunity to meet and converse with your region's lieutenant governors and division leadership teams over complimentary lunch AND dinner. Best of all, at the end of the night, you can dance it off with your friends from across the region in a region wide dance. I look forward to seeing you there! Anish Devati, Treasurer
