Vanderbilt Hall of Grand Central Terminal origanally was a waiting area. Since No more long distance trains stop at Grand Central Terninal, people do not need to wait too long for trains. The Vanderbilt Hall is no longer used as a waiting hall, so my intervention is trying to activate the Vanderbilt Hall. Compementart colors, orange and blue, are used to symbolize the form of ventilation. When they overlap each other. It becomes colorless, which allows people have a new way to view spaces.

Grand Central Analysis 14

Grand Central Terminal is one of the nations most historical landmarks, it has remained the busiest train station in the country. The first part of the analysis, we study the relationship of the struture as a constant element and the trajectory. We understand the pattern and density of the circulation, then we study the natural and demand-controlled ventilations in Grand Central Terminal as second part of the analysis. In the ventilation study model, the green bended plexiglasses are the abstract form of the natural air flows. and the red one are the demand-controlled air flows, like air-conditioner.

FIRST STREET CULTURAL GREEN PARK (SITE)

03

First Street Green Culture Park is an awkwardly shaped site. By using opening up the park, it is creating more opportunities for people to interact to this park. Different opacities and colors are used to create public space and privacy. For example, the orange area is the main gallery for public; the blue area is the office; the yellow is the dark room and the green is residency.

The concrete structure is supporting the platform (image 09-a) and the ramp(image 09-b). At the same time, the concrete structure walls also allow visiual artists to display their artworks. The form of the concrete structure allows people to circulate in park easlier and they can walk on top of the ramp, which slowly elevates up to the main platform. They can quickly exit by taking the staircase inside the concrete structure (image 06).

We designed an enclosure for the First Street Park that partially masks the inside from Houston Street but also physically opens up the site towards Houston. The different density of the architectural elements creates various degrees of porosity that highlights more nuanced experiences of the site.

Today society is very fast pace;we rarely stop during our travels to a given destination, howerer, there is a space where we must yield and wait, this place becomes a temporary space of habitation. The area we were concerned with during our analysis of Houston Street was the crosswalk stops at intersectons. This location can subconsciously change our coarse of direction and ultimately our destination, just from the change in cross singnals. In this location we become comfortable, our actions rhythmic, many stop and finish a meal disposing of the remains in the waist barrels, other view this area as aplace to mark their territory or post their art with graffiti, stickers and posters.

Cloud cover is measuing by zero to nine oktas, zero is clear and nine is sky obscured. When people measure cloud cover, they usually have a two by four grid mirror placed on the ground. It inspired to my weather station to have a four by four grid reflected water pool to measure the cloud cover. It allows people to look down to observe the cloud, which has another relationship between humans and clouds.

The masses in the universe are attracted to each other by gravity, where the smaller ones are drawn to the bigger masses. In the process, invisible pathways are created. My project is about creating a force of attraction that result in specific pathways. These pathways, then, becomes the visible boundary for the spherical volume.

04

Luis Barragan was the designer of the San Cristobal Stables that is located in Los Clubes, Mexico City. This project took place from 1966-1968. The project was a complex of residence and equestrian stables that was built for Folke Egerstrom. This project included a addition to the home, a large pool of water for the refreshment of the horses, a granary, a meadow for grazing, and the training tracks. All of this was brought together in to one area that was all intergraded together to make smooth transitions between home and stable.

A path is a track for travelling from one place to others. Paths should not be controlling people’s movement, people can choose their own paths instread. At the end, people will end up in different spaces. The colors, navy blue and orange, are affecting people’s experiances through the paths.

THRESHOLD

FALL 2012 │ COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOP 1 PROFESSOR LEADON IN COLLABORATION WITH KEVIN-SAN TOAST

Threshold is the transition from one point to another. In this project, we study how people experiance the transition between spaces. We did the collages (imange 02-05) to study the sense of void and solid
