BIOGRAPHY Li Heng Chue (Jonathan) is currently an experienced architecture graduate who has been always passionate about designing residential homes and industrial project. During his 2 years of working in the field has enable him to further explore his interest and set his direction in his future career. Li Heng Chue has accumulates significant experiences working on single residentials, townhouses, commercial and mixed-use projects and also developed a great eye to oversee and guide the workflow of projects. Li Heng Chue is a postgraduate from University of Adelaide, holding a Bachelor of Architectural Design and Master of Architectural Design . Born in Malaysia, on 30th September 1994, Li is raised in a family with drawing background and thus, had always been interested with anything that related to art and drawings until when he was turning 13, he got interested in architecture due to the approach that he was given. After finishing his high school, Li Heng Chue came to Adelaide to start his Foundation of Design Studies in Bradford College for a year which prepared him to University of Adelaide. After he graduated, Li Heng Chue also had the opportunities to gain work experiences working with architect firm and civil engineering firm. Architecture for Li has always been about the experiences and atmosphere that a space can provide to a visitor, that spatial quality that enhances one’s senses through the circulation and materials. In addition, Li had developed strong interest and skills in digital works and graphic design using Photoshop, Illustrator and rendering software.

01

PANDA HOTPOT 100 VICTORIA ST, CARLTON

This is the first Panda Hot Pot for Australia. It was established in Chengdu City, China in 2015, and has since expanded to Japan, Malaysia and the US. Stepping through giant wooden door, the interior design instantly channels the customers into ancient Chengdu, that strongly represent the craft of the origin of Hotpot and most importantly, the cultures and historyof China. It was fun and exciting project to personally manage throughout, especially working alongside with the interior design team from Chengdu. Collaborating with international team definitely adds the experiences and understands the differences in the working process as well as documentations. Despite long planning process working with town planner and the Council and localising the documentations, the outcome is no doubt worth the time.

By understanding the client’s requirements, we stick to simplicity and keep it minimalistic by integrating timber and aluminium composite panel materials . Timber used to

transform office spaces to connect to nature to discover a sensory feelings that allow the client to relax while waiting. Aluminium Composite Panel paired with recessed LED strip light exhibit a sense of contemporary and innovation.

TERMINUS / CRUISESHIP TERMINAL Outer Harbour is predominantly an industrial estate. Shipping and maritime transport infrastructure dominant the urban landscape, detached from the Adelaide CBD. This detached context results in Outer Harbour being underutilised.

Bridging Land and Sea - Creation of a spatial “in-between, creating a dialogue between two states of building. Through a series of physical media, drawings and through exercises, a personal interpretation of the crane arose. The project tasked the designer with the Intricate details of the design with regards aim of celebrating and reconstituting the to programme and interior were refined in existing industrial bodies into a speculative the proceeding weeks. architectural design of a cruise ship terminal. Land - Cruise Ship Terminal The conceptual boarding point of the project is derived from both the practical and Sea - Maritime Museum thematic natures of the harbour crane. The crane was then used as a generator for three What resulted was the re-imagining of the main anchors of the design philosophy :harbour crane as a generative machine for spatial qualities, turning a device for work Machinery - Movement as a spatial informer into one for play, learning and movement. Scale - Monumentalisation of the crane silhouette

CONCEPT This project provides the opportunity to explore the structure of cranes, specifically port cranes, and translate these interesting structures into architectural spaces and possibly, a building that portray the industrial characteristics. The main task of this project is to design a cruise ship terminal at Outer Harbour, Adelaide. The port cranes are interpreted as demonstrating the characteristics of verticality, megastructures (scale), machinery and most importantly, they are the only element on harbour that bridge the land and sea (carrying containers from ship onto the land).

machinery scale bridging land and sea

Process + Explorations The three natures of crane from personal interpretations translating into architectural context, a cruise shp terminal. Starting by creating montages with overlaying images of harbour crane and also in upside down manner, a metaphorical representation of water reflection, also representing the element of bridging land and sea. These montages were then used to trace out information whilst considering the three design anchors, in search of my own re-interpretation and re-imagining of the harbour crane as an architecture.

VERTICAL FLUX / BOUTIQUE HOTEL As the building situated in between Vardon Avenue and Rundle Street, they are culturally connected through a sweeping gestures that run from Rundle Street over to the building and down to Vardon Avenue. This sweeping gestures, or curve contains the dialogue that speak of both Vardon Avenue and Rundle Street characteristics, particularly the idea of ‘Komorebi’ – filtering of light through trees. This idea eventually form the façade and openings and also a dominant factor to the interior spaces. With the ‘Komorebi’ openings that runs on the front façade (north facing), all the rooms will be designed to face north. Consists of 3 different units with different floor area; standard room, Studio room and 2 Bedroom Suite, they eventually create the basic form of the hotel. The idea of in-between spaces eventually shifts to transitional space. This transitional space form the basis for my interior layout as well as connecting human to the interior space, creating the “Attunement”. Transitional space enables to emphasize the consciousness as one walks from one space to another (outside and inside). Thus, the interior space of each units will have 3 floor levels; “outside” represent the living room, kitchen and bathroom, continue to “transitional space” which are working space or quiet space, leading to “inside” which is the bedroom. Integration of both the ideas of ‘komorebi’ façade and transitional spaces ultimately form the Vertical Flux.

MEZZO / AUSTRALIAN EMBASSY IN INDIA The term, MEZZO, which is a word similar to ‘middle’ best describe the concept behind this Australian Embassy located in New Delhi. Instead of looking at an embassy as a normal building containing 2 countries attributes in one volume or space, it was separated and fragmentated throughout the site in considering with the existing entries, types of people that entering the site and also types of programmes. Site analysis and condition were eventually lead to the concept of MEZZO, the concept of creating the middle or in between spaces, searching the harmony and connection between Australia and India in architecture. Based on the physical model, the sunken plaza represent the MEZZO space with two distinct buildings that surround the plaza. The two different characteristics of the buildings were tied together through the continuity of roof form (skillion roof Australia, chajja - India). In microscale, another MEZZO space was also created by separating the exterior and interior walls that created the interval spaces. Both exterior and interior walls are clad with corrugated zinc and concrete respectively as these two materials represent Australia and India.

Quarters Public

Think of normal embassy as a volume, a simple cube that contains 2 of the countries attributes.

Volume was split into half to represent Australia and India with main circulation going through middle.

More pathways are opened up to engage with the surroundings landscapes and better circulation flows.

Chancery and staff quarters are separated for privacy reasons and better circulation flow.

Plaza / Hub

Both volumes were connected by The area in between the volumes was assigned as plaza / circulation hub, sharing programs. the most important space in relation to my concept and also the circulation.

Quarters are further divided between By utilising roof structure to tied ambassador and staffs. Flow and everything as one. continuity were considered.

section 1

section 2

Steel-structure framing is the main construction system with trusses running on top and connected to steel columns due to the extreme length of 70m.The steel structure framing also clad with zinc panel for both roof and wall. The interior walls were constructed by two types of wall: - steel frame wall - concrete wall Majority of the interior walls are concrete wall to reduce the heat from the sun in India. In addition, Timber is not used in this construction due to the reason that timber is one of the material that are not allow to used massively in India and strict rules and regulations were applied on timber construction based on research. Furthermore, zinc is used instead of aluminium or steel because part of it is due to my design concept, another p art is because aluminium facade create a very commercialized result while steel is not that abundant in India in comparison with other countries. Top hats were used repeatedly in connecting the panels as top hats are fairly lightweight structure compare to other complicated joint connections. Trusses are exposed in most of the rooms and corridors to create the tall ceiling space spatial quality and a direct view to the skillion-like roof form. Suspended ceiling were hung in certain spaces to create the transition of space.

ARCHI-FUNGI / ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL Union House Precinct, with nearly 120 years of history starting from the World War I, still able to stand firm on ground with classic architecture form. The building portrayed a sense of isolation and abandoned due to its wall materials and conditions are not well maintained. The idea is to embrace these characters and further exaggerate it and develop into a storyline. A tree is used as a metaphor to represent the Union House Precinct where fungus are slowly growing and spreading in and out of the building. These fungus developed into a series of interconnected interior spaces that become creative spaces for design students to think and find ideas. These spaces are also functioned as part of the circulation spaces and studio rooms. Part of the existing exterior brick walls were maintained and part of them were changed to perforated aluminium exterior wall panels to bring in modernistic character.

Embedded in the Australian cultural identity as a symbolism of Hope, Phar Lap’s humble beginnings to a champion racing horse empowers ones motivation to thrive for the better which was especially significant during the 1911 Great Depression. This is what we aim to evoke amongst the Greek society, to rise up from the economical crisis of today and to make a better tomorrow. War has always taken a toll on the Australian heritage, and questions of our role in the wars of the U.S. have always been ambiguous. Running parallel to this ambiguity lies the story of “A windmill in the West” where confusion and change are deeply embedded in Carey’s Story. Reflecting on this imperfection of our past, We ask the United States of America, what is our purpose?

EQUALITY

What is our fundamental right as humans? To have a voice. As the advocate for the rights of the Aboriginal people, the gloves of Faith Bandler symbolises the notion of change. As harmless as it seems, the simple donning of the “glove” within the noise of Tahir Square attempts to ignite the revolution of change within the Egyptian society and allow for voices to be heard once more.

Acknowledging our heritage, the Old Bailey site (where Newgate Prison sat) holds a strong relation to our beginnings where messages of goodbyes, engraved into these Convicts Love Tokens, are exchanged. As such the notion of reflecting on our past is engaged within our reach as we approach the still surfaces of its “boundary”.
