2022 Korea Thailand Contemporary Ceramics Exchange Exhibition

It is a great honor for us to be part of the 2022 Korea - Thailand Contemporary Ceramics Exchange Exhibition during the continuing pandemic situation. This year, marked as the iD Chula 60th anniversary, offers us the opportunity to revisit the goal of our beloved school of design. The ceramic design discipline in the department of Industrial Design was founded at the end of World War II to cope with the rigorous conditions of the depressive economy and to function as an incubator of ceramists, to be one of the backbones of the industry, as well as in handicrafts and artisan. The workpieces shown in this exhibition are perceptible as the continuity of art and design skills, industrial design knowledges, the thriving for best practice in accommodating all the situations. As we all know, one of the strong ties between Korea and Thai culture is based on the evolution of the ceramic industry, past and present. This exhibition would be a milestone both in academic and artistic circles as the achievements of the artists are to contribute to the spirit of clay and glaze in contemporary and innovative aspects, the artistry aspect, and the guts to challenge and connect with each other in a ceramic discourse exhibition. It is also a confirmation that the ceramic arts, crafts, and design community's essentials have been empowered and unified to encourage everyone who enjoys and appreciates the beauty and creativity of ceramic works through mostly images of the original 3D pieces. I deeply appreciated and would like to thank the Korea - Thai artists, the Korea Society of Ceramic Art, the Office of Art & Culture Chulalongkorn University, iD Chula representative Associate Professor Pim Sudhikam, the exhibition staff, and the supporter, Thai Oil Public Company Limited, for their contributions to presenting this exhibition towards society. Hope that this first exchange exhibition serves as a delightful promise for future collaboration and prosperity in the ceramic community, both locally and globally. Let’s celebrate! Associate Professor Kulthida Teachavorasinskun Head of Department, Department of Industrial Design Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University

The exhibition “2022 Korea-Thailand Contemporary Ceramics Exchange Exhibition” is an auspicious sign of Chulalongkorn University intra-university collaboration between the Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Architecture, and Museums and Art Gallery work units under Office of Art and Culture. It is also an evidence of the university’s art collaboration in an international level with The Korea Society of Ceramic Art (KSCA). Art crafts by eighty-five faculty members and artists from Korea and Thai is very instrumental in sharing techniques and experiences in creating artworks together. Office of Art and Culture, therefore, in high hopes that this exhibition, being presented both on-site and online, will be inspiring and received favorably by the Chula community and the public. Office of Art and Culture, Chulalongkorn University

I believe that Bencharong ceramics and Lai Nam Thong ceramics decorated with unique gold in the end of 18C are the pride of Thailand as valuable works currently representing Thailand and have much inspired the modern potters. During the period between 14C and 16C, Thailand and Korea were significantly influenced by Chinese ceramics, and thus, it is assumed that the two countries have mutually similar parts.
