Preface

Preparing a portfolio is always an opportunity to review and reflect my thinking on design. It is always the time for me to question and challenge myself. This portfolio consists of three parts, undergraduate, graduate and professional projects. Each part includes four selected projects to represent the specific period of time. Academic projects express different approaches to design and professional works illustrate the strategy in the practical process.

Adaptive Landscape, Bryant Park, NY Individual Project Advisor Professor - Jason Vigneri-Beane Non-Cybrid

Abstract

Graduate Thesis

I propose a responsive structure embedded in Bryant Park with underground storage for the New York Public Library functions as an interface between public park, library, archival space and users. On the one hand, adaptive surfaces with responsive structures substitute the landscape surface of the park and retain the park functions. On the other hand, adaptive surfaces allow people to enter into the library creating an in-between space below Bryant Park and beyond the automatic storage space.

Robotic Mechanism

Structure Manipulation

6

Every unit with robotic arms is connected to each unit it is adjacent to. While one arm is moving, another one reacts. In this moment, each arm will affect the others, not only changing the arm’s gesture but also shifting the surface and space created by the arms.

Under the Great Lawn It’s hard to notice there is an archival storage under Bryant Park’s landscape with 30 foot excavation, and 120,000 square foot.

7

Ground Level Responsive structure functions as a new public surface when embedded in Bryant Park. Although the new adaptive surfaces replace the original landscape surface of Bryant Park, activities and functions are still maintained when the adaptive surface functions as the artificial landscape of the park. On this level, the structure is submerged in the park and the structures are hidden. The form generated by the structures is based on purposes and functions while attached or detached to the ground creating different possibilities.

What is the future library? New York Public Library

? Books

Since information is everywhere, everywhere could be a library. Do we need a massive building to contain media and program? When media is no longer just books, we have more possibilities to convey and store knowledge. If media is mixed, we need to redefine library space without shelves. In the end, the new interface is turning into a machine. This machine could be plugged into the city and infused with new library functions.

Media Books Media

The Future Library

?

ve structure is becoming the new interface between NYPL and Bryant Park

9

Second Level New interface coexists with traditional library space and digital media space

10

On the one hand, since we will not need as much shelves for physical books as before, we can extend the functions of New York Public Library to the underground space of Bryant Park. On the other hand, the structures also replace the shelves and regular tables to upgrade the original public library space. On this level, is a temporary scenario that mixes with existing shelves and library spaces. The cluster composed by the units provides the new envelop enclosing cyberspace.

Movement Direction

Arms Variations

Continue Surface

Surface as different functions

Membranes Transformation

Following the transformation of the surfaces, each functions with a different purpose. It can be an entrance, a part of the landscape of the park, a projected screen, or an opening for sunlight when attached and detached with existing surface.

Implanting

The membranes’ and structures’ movements are connected to the definition of the AXIS and seeds on the existing ground (site).

Adaptation With the different operations of robotic arms, the new surfaces keep changing and finding a shape to adapt to each new function and condition. Transformative membrane functions as a landscape, multiple use interface, covering above the underground structure.

11

Third Level Automated robotic storage serves for the new interface

12

The bottom of the existing space will turn into the automated robotic storage system and connect to the main building of New York Public Library and new library spaces above. This level creates a robotic space without human operation and transports physical knowledge and information to the new library space and the old New York Public Library building.

View from automatic storage

Cyberspace Inside, the envelope is defined as cyberspace, including physics and digital media.

Artificial and Natural The new tranformative landscape surface and existing landscape of the park coexist. The new interface not only performs as a new ground but also extends the existing ground.

13

Functional Layers

The vertical relationship between each component (Figure 3-9) which constitute the creature at different levels. “ The Creature“ sinks into the park and intersects with two existing floors which built under the park in 1988. This project redefines the function between the intersected areas.

Plug into the Grid

Therefore, the robotic machine is plugged into the existing grid of concrete structures where it starts to cooperate with the existing landscape surface of the park, activities on the park and new events under the park.

Line Drawing

The two directional waves pass through each other. Two waves intersect and wrap in different position and shape at each specific time frame.

Close to eye

Far from eye

Waves at highest peak determined the hard line weight because it close to my vision. On the other hand, waves at lowest peak determined the light line weight because it is far from my vision. Also, it determined other line types in the same way. Variations of overlapping lines gave different direction and intensity in real time. High Peak

Aggregation

Surfaces intersect with one another without collision make different level of platforms. Also, theses different levels of platforms changes in time. The surfaces will block passengers to pass through each other without porosity (such as a wall). On the other hand, the surfaces will allow passengers to pass through each other with porosity (such as doors or windows).

Defining Issue Phenomenon

It's " Generational problem", not "Age problem. " Because of different background such as culture, economy, education etc... Based on Neil Leach's theory and many sociologists's assumption, resource centralization will split to small cacoon. "Mature age" is already merged in Japan. It seems to happen in Taiwan immediately. It will impact Taiwan's society structure entirely. 40

Neil Leach/camouflage Urban Camouflage Neil Leach/Urban Paul Virilio describes the ‘bunkerised’ spaces that are emerging today. I would prefer to call them ‘aesthetic cocoons’ - designer bars, designer restaurants, designer interiors - often highly aestheticised spaces of refuge and retreat from the fragmentation of contemporary existence, spaces of urban camouflage within the Wallpaper* Culture of today. But they do not operate as isolated points of immobility. Rather they operate within a rhizomatic framework, such that key metropolitan centres - ‘points of urban intensity’ - are linked within a network. What we need to theorise for such a condition is not a placespecific understanding of contemporary metropolitan existence, but rather a fluid, dynamic notion of ‘lifestyling’, that is nomadic, and which depends upon a network of ‘aesthetic cocooning’. This paper, then, attempts to formulate such a theory.

415 Studio Concern : Public Spaces & Architecture Research On the edge, revealing the betweenness In this studio, we aim for rebuilding relationships between public spaces and Architectures. In this case, we were assigned the mission on finding the lost urban spaces in Taipei city. We need to read the context and find out its problems, and then insert a new solution. Testing what will happen in the end.

Finding a site is the first mission. This place consists of various programs and abounds of natural scenes, but separated by the Keelung river. It's covered by many roads and highways because it's the important path between city and suburb. It's not only limited height due to the airplane skyline but also limited underground due to pre-historical remains. It's the compressed space. Airspace Underground

Mission

Jington is with rainy and glory history because of the coral mining. The site is located in the old mineral area. The new community center I designed replace the old refinery to be an important part of local residents' life as the old period memory.

Design Process

I use different stages of the model fitted into the site model to help me to create a suitable volume proportion. Trying to convey and discuss my concept through these models.
