Khmer-chinese, Cambodian born on 20th March 1997
My work revolves around redefinition and conceptual metaphors. I seek for references to reinterpret and translate them into a playful piece of architecture with much sensitivity towards the communities and the environment surrounding it. I explore and experiment new ways to create a new understanding for better design solution and to design sustainably.

concept + strategies Some modern design elements are not relevant in today’s world. The mass-modular system and small corridor were an economical solution during the postwar period. Developers take advantage of low construction cost with high-profit returns. Therefore, it created many health issues and social isolation in many of the high rises built today. This project questions the relevance of postwar modern design that we still see in the contemporary world. This project is an attempt to re-imagine modernism to fit into the contemporary urban context equipped with current advanced technological design and construction tools. Rather than a machine for the living, the project seeks to create spaces that adapt to the users. Taking on the low rise residential typology and the street level, where most users had already adapted, as the main inspiration, the project will then re-create the typology and replicate into a skyscraper. Each floor of the highrise will be seen as a park in the sky, revitalising the surrounding. The park will also provide a healthier living and work-life by reconnecting the users to greenery and encourage more social interaction just outside each apartment. On a macro level, the skyscraper helps to soften the surrounding hardscape, enhancing the view of Manchester’s skyline.

facade and structural concept The implication of having an experimental facade may increase the cost of construction. However, in many ways, in the long run, it will benefit the environment, improve quality of living and well-being. The parametric diagrid structure serves as an ornamentation which previously removed during the modernism period by modernists. Had the movement continued, the strip of decoration would lead to the strip of culture, history, tradition, art and craft. This structural expression is the celebration of the technological achievement in the contemporary world. The self-supporting structure erects from the ground to act as a canopy to shield users from the consistent rain in Manchester. The structure slowly bends itself to act as a vertical facade, shielding off horizontal load such as strong wind and other external environmental factors.
separation of office and residential space
sponge facade on the south to reduce noise pollution for office level that caused by the traffic flow on the Mancunian highway
sponge facade on the southwest and west to reduce wind load for residential users
extended floor plates for greenery for recreational purpose

The site takes advantage of the southwest wind to blow in the water vapour to humidify and cool down the workspace as the weather can be really hot and dry
co-working space interior
Service core that consists of lifts, fire escape staircases, toilets and risers on the south of the building to shield off the harsh sunlight to reduce heat gain within the building
Perforation facade to reduce glare, heat gain while allowing ventilation to flow through the workspaces
The atrium space allows users to connect visually. Environmentally, it brings in the south afternoon sun deeper into the floor plan and to create stack-ventilation effect to constantly bring in fresh air
corridor space acting as heat buffer and break out zone
Rainwater downpipe directs the rainwater to the water body next to the site for storage Cantilevering slabs to shade off harsh glare into the ground floor Full glazed ground floor to allow in as much daylight as possible and to welcome to public into the space
Bored pile foundation is used as soil in Saudi Arabia is softer, therefore, the need to drive the piles to the bedrock for structural integrity and stability
