Shih-Ding Village is located 50km aways from Teipai City. Farmers settled here to grow tea trees in early time of 50s. However , the new generation of youths have moved out the village nowadays, while elders and child were left. As a result that they did not have too much communication with modern city, an unique life style and environmental features were therefore fortunately well-preserved, despite that became famous recently.

early picture of Shih-Ding Village In Shih-Ding village, houses were initially built in line and laid on between hilly mountains and a creek. As expansion of population in 70’s, most of inhabitants have been built extension either on top or in front of their houses, few of them even rebuilt a new higher one. Those extensions and new building were much longer than the old one and have occupied the passage area, even encroached the border of the creek. As a result, those inhabitants had to created the corridor inside their houses , in order to link up the row of buildings with outside . So, if you go through the corridor, as unique space was experienced, sometime walking in indoor area, sometime walking in semi or totally outdoor area.

Spatial analysis of the corridor

11

Inhabitants can go down to the rocks in river

An abandoned house/site among the roll of buildings was selected to perform the design, since some of inhabitants have moved out and the houses were therefore abandoned and released. The mountain and river along the site also the roll of building have been embedded into their life relating to the corridor which they walking through everyday. However, the mountain, river and corridor were individual systems, did not interact each other, thus I would like to branched the route of corridor, in addition to linked up the mountain and river, as well as integrated the activities relevant to inhabitants’ habits.

In most of Asian City like Taipei, where has been rising huge shopping mall to replace the shops on streets. City’s blocks are merged into a network grid for placing bigger solo buildings from an originally scrappy and organic texture. As a result, activities on streets have been sweeping away, walking on streets become joyless, people are disappearing on street but in indoor. The outdoor social life has been ceasing, as inhabitants spent too more time in such huge malls and theme entertainment buildings. On the other worlds, the city is disconnecting to it’s inhabitants, people are less care how the city’s content would be, but splendid interior spaces are more demanding instead.

I analyzed Taiwan’s night market to see how they adaptively using outdoor area to created temporary commercial activities. Night markets in Taiwan are very popular and traditional commercial activity, ever familiar to inhabitants and even visitors. In Night markets there are full of transitory vendors with temporary extensions and construction, that spread commerce everywhere. People easily get interaction with each other during consumption, the boundary between shops and also the boundary between shops and people are blurred. Thus, I would like to apply the features of night market to the modern shopping mall space, because they are native and emerged from real Taiwanese culture.

The selected site is located in central part of Taipei City, where is the densest commercial area in Taipei. There occupied many offices above two floors of buildings but also full of retail shops on streets. In addition, there has many advantages by it’s location, there on the traffic connection between Taipei main Station on west and Taipei 101on east. West side is the early developed area, where keeps many traditional commercial activities and city context. On the other hand, the area of Taipei 101 is a new reformed district where laid wider grid with solo huge buildings in each block. Thus, the area of the site can be considered as interface of both oppositive areas, and fact there is kind of mixed those features.

The selected site is located in Baita Temple District, where preserve a large group of traditional residential typologies called SiHeYuan. Alleys were formed by arrays of SiHeYuan called HuTong, which is narrow and organic. Over the last decades, China has been facing major problems resulting from rapid urban growth. Great efforts were made to solve the dramatic housing shortage and to improve the appalling living conditions in overcrowded area by the central government. The old SiHeYuan Unite can not afford such a high dense living condition. Therefore, there are many spontaneous activities inside the courtyard, along the HuTong, even going to the second floor. That is why many original residents have moved out there, but migrant people, floating workers, fresh graduated people and others lowincome people moved in instead.

Base on parameter configuration setting, we are drawing different spheres representing amount of sunlight, acoustic, density, etc. These can be seen as the attractor or repellent points within a force field for the partiles.

Force fields configuration:

The particles behavior is defined by the input parameters location and value. Each particles searches in all directions for the closest influential spheres. The size of spheres represents the demand for either density, sunlight, noise condition or accessibility. The distance of each particle within different Force Fields define the relationship between each of the particles and their closest neighbour.

There is a main Temple in central areas each community in it’s initial composition in Taiwan. It implies the importance to inhabitants while residents not only taking religious activities in temple but also placing their social life around the it. That is why a night market always nearby the temple supplying foods and commodities as subsequent activity of temple events, and daily social life. Moreover, they doing other activities like tea drinking and opera performing as part of social life communicating with neighbors The site is located in ShiLin district where is super famous because of the night market. As one of early expansion area of Taipei city, there is a old local temple set in the central of the community and nearby the night market. However the night market was getting famous and became a tourist point, the temple no longer function like before as all the open space was fully occupied by transitory vendors. So the residents lost their social life between their community and the attentions of religious events also dropping . Fortunately, the government has preserved a place in front of the temple for re-building the community activities.

The data from the four factors were converted to different symbols with different size. Different shape of symbol represents different factors while the bigger symbols indicating higher values. Then the four factors of symbolic mappings were combined into one by three times division. The data are extracted form each combined mapping which meets the requirements of different activities, as well as distinguishes the ideal region for each activities.

Interior Remodelling project

Architects : Kwok-Tung Chun Parametric Associative system design : Kwok-Tung Chun Digital Manufacturing Engineering : Kwok-Tung Chun Digital Fabrication : Wang-Sang Laser Co., Ltd. Location : Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong Client : Sei-Wah Chun

67

This is an interior remodeling project recently finished in a flat of an old public rental housing in Hong Kong. Public rental hosing generally is the government founded huge communities composited with several large buildings, of which embedded in thousands flats. In each flat, the area is very small and insufficient to partition off rooms for every dweller, nevertheless, one of three families has got to live in such low quality areas in Hong Kong. This project shows how it is done to partition off two rooms in such small and difficult circumstance, also a temporary room for domestic helper within an inadequate area of 4.4 by 7.2 meters. Hence, the aim of this project is to form the rooms as good as possible within the limited space provided, in terms of spatial quality.

On the original plan, it is not possible to create two rooms which have widows toward outdoor, so I curved the new created wall for setting a window and door at 45 degrees in order to introduce sunlight and air flow into one of the rooms. In the other room, I patterned the wall with specified openings which insulates the sight but light and air-flow are still able to get into the room. Therefore the nature lighting and ventilation can be satisfied in both rooms.

Solar Indication :

Triple layers’ wall allows light leak through it

68

Triple layer wall :

In order to properly pattern a vision of opening on the wall, I set up an array of points, based as the centers of each opening. The position of points would be modified by the value of parameters, which came out from the sunlight analysis. The logic is that, the area collects more sunlight would be placed bigger oping, less sunlight the openings would be smaller. On the other worlds, the points were concentrated to low value area, but relatively stable in high value area. Moreover, by utilizing a new invented opening logic, the space behind the wall can gets light and ventilation with intrusion of sight

Plan

The entire creation consists of customized furniture, reflective wall penals and a hollow partition wall. All of them were fabricated in factory and then assembled on site, especially the partition wall which was assembled with wooden boards and manufactured by CNC machine as an outcome of contouring process. All the pieces of boards would be assembled into several large components, and finished with polishing and painting before shipment to the site. In a nutshell, this is somewhat a low budget and experimental project which tests the capacity of pre-fabrication in an interior design by utilizing CAD and CAM tools

A huge circular concourse is used to link up lobby and the three theme museums, as provide a minimal and efficient circulation the between the museums. In addition to a large void circle inside the concourse for lighting itself, the intervals between the layer of roofs are able to introduce light into the three block of museums. The three blocks of museum are themed of Science, Culture and Fine Art respectively. All of them are tiled with wooden strips which give the public area a better acoustic condition.
