GMUND PAPERS Paper Culture Since 1829 The Gmund paper mill is a family business with its headquarters on the shores of picturesque Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria, Germany . Gmund leads the market in design papers. “Draw strength from the past” succinctly expresses the philosophy that has always accompanied our business’s history. GMUND combines art and craftsmanship, tradition, ecology and innovation, man and machine. Under the leadership of CEO and owner Florian Kohler, the results are an incredible palette of noble papers in the most widely diverse colors and with every conceivable surface texture. GMUND - ACT GREEN IS CLIMATE NEUTRAL Gmund constantly strives to minimize emissions of greenhouse gases. During the past two years, Gmund has reduced emissions of carbon dioxide by an additional 25% and simultaneously increased from 71% to 75% the percentage of electrical current that Gmund produces from regenerative energy sources. Even ultramodern technology has not yet made it possible to manufacture paper entirely without generating CO2. Gmund will compensate for unavoidable CO2 emissions generated through the production of GMUND - ACT GREEN by supporting a monitored climate-protection project in Central America.

32 34

small actions that we do everyday could stopped hurting our environment than we can slow the dying of our earth. Therefore, I am going to give you these

36 38

small actions that we can adjust in our everyday life, which can bring as a great change in the future. I am a person who want to make small change and

THIS IS A STORY... It's dinnertime but there's no food in the house, so you get in your car and drive to the grocery store. You walk the aisles browsing for something to buy. You pick up chicken and a pre-made salad, then return home to enjoy your meal. Consider the ways your seemingly simple trip to the market affected the environment. Driving to and from the store contributed carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The electricity required to light the store was powered by coal, the mining of which ravaged an Appalachian ecosystem. The salad ingredients were grown on a farm treated with pesticides that washed into local streams, poisoning fish and aquatic plants (which help keep the air clean). The chicken was grown on a massive factory farm a long distance away, where animal waste produced toxic levels of atmospheric methane. Getting the goods to the store required trucks, trains and more trucks -- all of which emitted carbon.

Human action Even the smallest human actions initiate environmental change. How we heat our homes and power our electronics, how we get around, what we do with our garbage, where our food comes from -- all of these put a strain on the environment beyond what it's designed to support. We hurt the environment in more ways than you could possibly imagine. Misguided construction, irrigation and mining can deface the natural landscape and disrupt important ecological processes. Aggressive fishing and hunting can deplete entire stocks of species. Human migration can introduce alien competitors to native food chains. Greed can lead to catastrophic accidents

24

and laziness to environmentally destructive practices.

26

36 38 40 42 44 46 48 50 52

Taken at a societal level, human behavior changes the environment in

34

dramatic ways. The Earth's temperature has increased by one degree

32

Fahrenheit since 1975. The polar ice caps are shrinking at a rate of 9

30

percent a decade.

YOU CAN DO MORE FOR THE PLANET BY EATING LESS MEAT THAN EVEN BY SWITCHING TO HYBRID CARS. DRIVING A HYBRID CAR WOULD SAVE ABOUT 1 TON OF EMISSIONS PER YEAR, BUT SWITCHING TO A VEGAN DIET WOULD SAVE ABOUT 1.5 TONS.

Livestock industries generate 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions reported from the

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle The state of our environment today is such that it needs all the help that

36 38

we can give it. Global warming is increasing to the detriment of the polar ice caps which are one of

40 42 44 46 48 50 52

the major regulators of our global climate. Carbon Dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases is building up in the atmosphere and one of the causes of these is denudation of forests all over the world. Although there has been some concerted effort pollution remains one of the major problems facing us today. The generation of trash is also at an all time high. The bottom line is that our environment is in dire straits and all of us need to do our part for the environment.

Clean water is a precious resource crucial to survival and an integral part of self-sufficient living. Water conservation

32 34

Conserve Water at Home

at your home should be instinctive, and is especially important for those living

in dry regions and/or during a post-SHTF life when readily 36 38

available municipal water may be limited or non-existent. Conserving water means smaller water bills if you live in an area serviced by a municipal water system. If your

40 42 44 46 48 50 52

home is connected to a septic system, water conservation also can help prevent water pollution. Overloading a septic system may cause nutrient and bacterial contamination of nearby lakes and streams. According to the American Water Works Association, the average U.S. family uses water inside the home are 28% at toliets, 22% clothes washing, 21% showers, 12% fscuents, 9% baths, 5% toliet leakage, 3% dish washing. Because such a large percentage of water use is in the bathroom, this is where water conservation efforts should begin. Install water-saving devices on faucets and showerheads. Take shorter showers. And when filling the tub, don’t let water run down the drain while waiting for it to get hot.

Place “toilet dams” or rock-filled containers in the tanks of

WATER I USE

older flush toilets. Don’t use the toilet to flush away facial tissues, paper, and other similar solid and liquid wastes—use a wastepaper

basket. Repair leaks in your faucets and toilets. Turning off the water while brushing your teeth can save a family 5 to 10 gallons per day. Rinse hand razors in a filled sink rather than under running water. When shampooing, turn off the water while lathering the hair. Run an automatic dishwasher only with full loads. Don’t use the extra-long prewash and scrub cycles unless absolutely necessary. Do not use a garbage disposal except at the end of cooking or cleanup periods or when it is full. Whenever possible, don’t use the disposal at all. Compost vegetable peelings or put them in the garbage can. To conserve water in the kitchen, don’t let faucets run for washing or rinsing. Instead, fill a container with water or use the sink by stoppering the drain. Wash all the vegetables for a meal at the same time. When washing anything, use a brush, washcloth, or your hand to dislodge particles of dirt rather than relying on the force of water to do the job

ON THE ROAD

1 Buy smart: Purchase a fuel-efficient, low-greenhouse gas vehicle When shopping for a new or used vehicle (or even renting a vehicle), choose the cleanest, most fuel-efficient vehicle that meets your needs. With a wide range of clean, fuel-efficient vehicles available today, it’s easier than ever to go green—for the environment, and for your

34

wallet. Check out www.fueleconomy.gov, to find the best, most comprehensive information 36

on vehicle emissions and fuel economy. You can also learn more about the fuel economy and environment label that you’ll see on all new vehicles. The label has been redesigned and updated

38

for even easier comparison shopping. These new window stickers provide fuel economy and 40

environmental ratings for all new vehicles, including advanced technology vehicles like electric cars and plug-in hybrids. And while at the showroom, you can scan the QR Code® on each

42

vehicle’s label to be connected to additional information online, including personalized cost and 44 46 48

energy-use estimates. 2 Drive smart To improve your fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, go easy on the brakes and gas pedal, avoid hard accelerations, reduce your time spent idling (no more than 30 seconds), and unload unnecessary items in your trunk to reduce weight. If you have a removable roof rack

50 52

and you are not using it, take it off to improve your fuel economy. Use cruise control if you have it, and for vehicles with selectable four-wheel drive, consider operating in two-wheel drive mode when road conditions make it safe to do so. 3 Remember maintenance Get regular tune-ups, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule (which can be found in your owner’s manual), and use the recommended grade of motor oil. A well-maintained car is more fuel-efficient, produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions, is more reliable, and is safer!

Whether or not we identify with those who call themselves ‘greens’, all of us are becoming increasingly aware that our natural world is hurting and that all are responsible for its care and health.
