CFS, The School at Church Farm Annual Report to Donors Fiscal Year 2006 - 2007

“If God gives us a vision of something He wants done, He also gives us the ability to do it.” The Reverend Dr. Charles W. Shreiner Founder, The Church Farm School

The Chapel of the Atonement             Illustration by Adam Dirks, CFS Class of 2009

A Continuing Tradition “It had ever been my dream to establish a boy’s school that would take care of boys of ability and promise who otherwise might have no opportunity to gain such an education.” The Reverend Dr. Charles Wesley Shreiner Founder 1918

“It was the Colonel, as all students have called him through the years, who dreamed the dream of the Church Farm School. It was he who made the dream a reality. Those of us who continue the school today, are fulfilling the dreams of this simple man, and if we may be so bold, dreaming more dreams for the future.” Dr. Charles Wesley Shreiner, Jr. Headmaster 1964 – 1987

“Just as the world we live in is constantly evolving, so too must the School be prepared and willing to keep pace with progress. One thing that will never change, however, is the fact that CFS will remain a place of opportunity for deserving young men who wish to succeed and who honestly want to make a difference within the world.” Charles W. Shreiner, III Headmaster 1987 - present

Message from the Chairman of the Board Dear Friends of CFS, The School at Church Farm:

CFS: Mission Driven Tuition Income

It brings me great pleasure to have this opportunity as Chairman of the CFS Board of Directors, to share with you this first ever “CFS Annual Report to Donors. Various members of the school community invested a great deal of effort and care in the production of this impressive snapshot of a year gone by in the life of the school. The mission upon which CFS was founded ninety years ago this coming April, continues to guide the work we do and the opportunities we provide. I am delighted to support CFS as both donor and board member knowing quite well the quality of people who live, work and study at the school.

Scholarship Assistance

CFS provides millions of dollars of scholarship assistance annually.

You can be sure that the gifts you so generously direct our way year after year are being put to good use. Little more than ten percent of the annual CFS operating expenses are offset by tuition revenue. Every member of the student body receives a significant amount of scholarship assistance. All that we ask of our families is that they contribute to the best of their ability. The school must make up the rest through effective management of its endowment fund and the continued success and good fortune of its annual fund raising efforts. This report is our way of saying thanks again for all the critical support you and our entire CFS community of alumni, parents, staff, board members, friends and donors continue to provide to this most worthy institution and mission.

Respectfully

Samuel H. Ballam, III Chairman CFS Board of Directors Samuel H. Ballam, III

CFS Mission Statement

T

he mission of CFS, The School at Church Farm is to provide a rigorous, well-rounded, college-preparatory education in a caring, Christian environment to help prepare our students for productive and fulfilling lives. We seek young men of ability and promise for whom the CFS educational experience presents an extraordinary opportunity. 2

2006 - 2007  The Year in Review

New Faces

Back to School

The start of the year brought, like every year, new students and new faculty. Most notable for this year was the arrival of Mr. Ken Rodgers, an experienced administrator and father of two CFS students, as our new Director of Academics.

Student volunteers worked as Orientation Guides, introducing new students to the intricacies of student life (and lockers) during opening weekend.

Grade Level Day

“Grade Level Day” was a new event for September 2006, the creation of Assistant Headmaster Bill Wentzel’s Student Development Committee. Classes participated as groups in both on and off campus team-building activities.

Chapel Speaker Series

Robb Armstrong, creator of the awardwinning cartoon, “JumpStart,” was one of the many interesting and dynamic speakers to visit campus as part of the 2006 - 2007 Guest Speaker Series.

Special Events

The Sodexho Food Services team puts on a special dinner each month for the CFS community. Students, faculty, staff and their families are welcome. Here, Art teacher Kevin Korb and his son Braeden enjoy the Halloween costume party.

Celebration

Fall sports teams made strong showings, led by the soccer team’s victory in the KSAC (Keystone Athletic Conference) Championships, beating defending champion, The Perkiomen School.

3

Membership in the CFS Choir requires not only vocal talent, but a commitment to a demanding schedule of both individual and group practice. Here the Choir warms up in the library prior to an evening performance in Alumni Hall. The CFS Choir concluded a successful year with an extraordinary trip to South Africa.

Endurance

Pageant

A long-standing CFS tradition continued with the annual Christmas Pageant, “Why the Chimes Rang,” performed every December for over eighty years. Here Jenny Sanderson applies make up to David Eslinger ‘07 who played the role of “The Miser” in the production.

CFS runners, led by Matt Kaplan ‘07, make a strong showing during a cross country meet. Coach Eric Horsey has been challenging and inspiring CFS students in the track and cross country programs for over ten years.

Professionals

Parents’ Weekend

The CFS faculty and staff devote much time and energy both in and out of the classroom to the students. Here Divante Fraser ‘09 listens intently as science teacher Jeff Holton uses his laptop to demonstrate a new concept.

Parents are always welcome on campus, but especially on Parents’ Weekend held each fall. Here Franky Mills ‘12 enjoys dinner with Diane Stackhouse.

Technology

Each CFS student is assigned his own personal laptop for use throughout the school year. Email and internet access facilitates regular communication between teachers and students. Here 7th graders participate in Computer Technology class, designed to give new students skill and confidence in handling their laptops.

Chapel

Students and faculty walk up the hill to the Chapel for twice-weekly gathering of the entire school community. Tuesdays feature a speaker or topic of interest to CFS students and faculty, while Wednesday is a full chapel service in the Episcopal tradition.

Ambassadors

Commander Paul Spear ‘81, visited the CFS campus during History Month to talk about his career in the Navy and his current position commanding the nuclear submarine, USS Tucson. Here he is joined by the Student Ambassadors.

Lasting Connections

Gunnery Sergeant Adam Doyle ‘89 with his former teachers Bill and Jenny Sanderson. Adam spoke to students during History Month about his time at CFS, his experiences as a Marine and his entrepreneurial career.

History Month

CFS History Month is held annually in April, and this year we recognized all those in our community who have served our country in the military. A highlight of the month was history teacher and Marine reservist Brian Keslick surprising students and faculty with a Chapel appearance upon his return from Iraq. Needless to say, his wife Christy and the entire CFS community were thrilled with his safe return.

5

Academics

Sung-Wook Hong ’08 and Amrit Gordon ’08 studying Spanish vocabulary during a study hall. Students participate in study hall each evening in their cottages, as well as during the school day.

Teamwork

Since 2001, CFS students have volunteered for Walk for the Whisper, which supports education and research for ovarian cancer. A big impetus for our involvement is Mrs. Jenny Sanderson’s safe treatment and recovery from this difficult disease. The event starts out our community service program each fall.

The CFS Varsity basketball team gathers around their coach during a time out. Coach Marc Turner teaches players to believe in themselves and each other, whether on the court, in the classroom, or anywhere else.

Instrumental Music

Tradition

Young-Geon Kim ’09 and Rae Gordon ’09 lead the wind section as the CFS Instrumental Ensemble, directed by Lou Spagnola, performs a variety of musical selections at the spring Parents’ Night.

Coach Art Smith returned to lead the varsity wrestling team this year, after a five-year hiatus. He’s been coaching CFS wrestlers since the early 1980’s. Here Coach Smith inspires his team with his trademark “refuse to lose!” pep talk.

CFS Singers

The CFS Singers, a select group of choir members, perform World War II era songs much to the delight of the large audience of guests who attended the Alumni Dinner in April.

2006 - 2007 CFS Choir While the trip to South Africa was the focus of most of the year’s activities for the CFS choir, it was also a notable year in terms of the achievements of individual students. The Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association (PMEA) sponsors various levels of competitive choral festivals across the state. It is an outstanding experience for our young men, and a chance for them to challenge themselves to develop their vocal skills to the next level while having the opportunity to sing with some of the best musicians and guest conductors across the state. Jae Ho Kyung ‘08, Jac Trimble ‘07, Byung Moon Kang ‘08 and Philip Yang ‘07 participated in the District 12 Chorus Festival. Jae Ho, Jac, and Philip participated in the Region VI Chorus Festival, and Philip participated in the All State Chorus Festival. Choir Director Gary Gress proudly noted “This was a very strong year for many of the individuals in the choir. It has been a couple of years since so many CFS Choir students participated in the district and regional festivals, and three years since someone made it to the All State level. It’s a reflection of the personal effort and dedication of these young men, and a window into the level of ability within the group at large.”

South African students from Sao Bras High School share dancing and laughter with CFS Choir members. As part of their performance tour, CFS students participated in a choral festival at this school in Mossel Bay, located along the southern coast of South Africa, about 200 miles east of Cape Town.

Arbor Foundation CFS Board Member, N. Peter Hamilton had a vision of enhancing the beauty of our campus grounds. Thank you to Peter and to The 1976 Foundation of The American Endowment Foundation for the generous gifts that enabled this vision to become a reality. Dozens of new trees have been planted across the campus, and the care of the existing trees has been greatly enhanced. Future generations of CFS students, faculty, staff and visitors will have beautiful, healthy trees to admire and appreciate thanks to Peter’s vision, generosity and commitment.

Beautiful new trees have been planted all around the CFS campus thanks to N. Peter Hamilton and The 1976 Foundation of the American Endowment Foundation.

In Appreciation Challenge Grant Sponsors We owe a very special thank you to two very gracious people, who played an enormous role in making this year’s annual fund a success. For those who don’t know, Tyler Griffin was a member of the CFS Board of Directors from 1948 - 2002, over fifty years and served as chairman for approximately twenty years. In fact, the “Griffin Board Room” is actually named for Tyler, and not, as many believe, the school’s mascot. The Griffins offered a very generous challenge grant, matching the gifts of all first time donors to the Annual Fund, as well as the increased gift amount from repeat donors. We thank Mr. & Mrs. Griffin for their leadership in continuing to make an education at CFS affordable to all of our families.

Tyler and Sonia Griffin

CFS Board of Directors Many thanks to the CFS Board of Directors for their dedication and tireless effort in helping CFS realize it’s mission. Their work has allowed the School to continue providing deserving young men with the unique opportunity to experience the type of education that otherwise would not be possible. 1st row, from left to right) John Berlinger, Richard Gherst, James Tate, ‘52, Sally Graham, Donald Burt, ‘77, Rev. Annual Report Production Our sincerest thanks to our corporate neighbor AGI for their generous grant which helped to underwrite the cost of producing this document, our first ever CFS Annual Report to Donors. Their support was instrumental in turning a mere idea into a reality.

2006 Tyler Awards F

orty seven years ago this September 7th I arrived as a new student at the Church Farm School. For a moment let me recall some facts about world in 1959. The population of the United States was 187 million people. I brought a dictionary with me, dutifully marked with my laundry number 103. That dictionary did not have the following words: computer, astronaut, DNA, jetliner, duct-tape, cell-phone, or e-mail. The telephone in the dining room – and everywhere else – had rotary dials. A manual typewriter was a luxury, especially if you had carbon paper. Color television and microwave ovens were pipe dreams. India and China and Australia were distant mysterious countries. The remote, but persistent, fear of nuclear war with Russia was always right in front of us. One of my life concerns was that there did not appear to be anything or anyplace left to create, discover, or invent in the world. By my personal assessment, my life and vision began to change on that September 7, 1959.

2006 Tyler Award winner Dr. Bob Graf, ‘62 (center) and Mrs. Joyce Graf (2nd from left) are joined by Edgar Salazar ‘07, Mrs. Sally Graham (‘05 Tate Award winner), Headmaster Terry Shreiner and Matt Kaplan, ‘07.

The Church Farm School had been established almost forty years earlier by the Reverend Charles Wesley Shreiner to provide boys of promise a safe place where they could develop along educational, vocational, athletic, and religious lines without regard to financial concerns or family background. The quality of the education offered at that time would be considered good, but not great, by twenty-first century standards. As I told many of you earlier this year, I thrived in this environment.

I continue to support and to believe in this school and its students and teachers. When someone tells me about graduating from a school with five hundred classmates, I tell of what it was like to have a graduating class in 1962 of nine young men who all went out into the world “Knowing No Limits.” Recently, I saw a shiny color brochure about this year’s CFS Graduates with the slogan “Know No Limits.” Many of the previous graduates of this great school have held that belief in their hearts. I know of college professors, Generals, ministers, company executives, bankers, lawyers, physicians, fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers, carpenters, and plumbers, artists, musicians, salesmen, farmers, and computer programmers. Many have served in the military and defended our country’s honor and freedom. Most came home – some did not. The current students of CFS are growing up in a world of opportunity and confusion. There are 300 million people in the United States, and the remote, but distinct, possibility of terrorist attack, or even nuclear war. We have laptops connected to the world wide web, camera cell-phones, recombinant DNA, miracle drugs, digital television, and duct-tape. On a clear night we can go outside and watch the space station go past just one hundred miles above the earth. I have been to China and Australia; they are only fifteen or twenty hours away by airliner. We can call for free on the phone to get a bank balance and probably talk to someone in India any hour of the day or night. After almost eighty years, CFS is still providing boys of promise a safe place where they can develop along educational, vocational, athletic, and religious lines without regard to financial concerns or family background. The facilities here are vastly improved. The education provided is first rate, by any standard. I continue to support and to believe in this school and its students and teachers. When someone tells me about graduating from a school with five hundred classmates, I tell of what it was like to have a graduating class in 1962 of nine young men who all went out into the world “Knowing No Limits.” Go in peace. Robert E. Graf CFS - Class of 1962 October 17, 2006 Dr.. Graf was valedictorian of his graduating class and went on to get his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts.
