From The Head Of School Dear Friends, A year ago our annual report highlighted the School’s stability in mission and program during turbulent economic times. I don’t suppose it was possible to pick up any organization’s annual report without reading similar news: a shrinking economy becoming the catalyst for all-out attempts to stave off contracted services. Difficult times have been a challenge to many. Our message centered on “Keeping Faith” with an enduring commitment Rev. Edmund K. We also affirmed our unassailable allegiance to you – the CFS community – and we remain most grateful for your personal and financial support. Your prayers and generosity are a blessing, and they sustain who we are and what we are doing today for young men seeking opportunity. Alumni, past and present parents, organizations and friends… you continue to keep faith with us and for that we all say, “Thank you!” In this year’s report we speak of “Advancing the Mission.” I realize that such phrases may be quaint, but they are certainly not trivial. We have been successfully marching to a plan maintaining balance and stability within our financial resources without any sacrifice of program. We have had to be nimble, yet without being overly or unduly reactive. Indeed, we are extending our unique mission wherever possible to find and attract boys of ability and promise. And while other independent schools have seen shrinking enrollments, ours has increased. We ended the year ahead of budget. Presently, we are working to finalize a strategic plan that will usher CFS into a future still in need of the educational services CFS has and will continue to provide. Our future’s cornerstone remains fulfillment of God’s call to serve young men of ability and promise. With your continual help, we will do just that through offering a 21st Century educational opportunity that can and will shape their young lives in ever more positive light and possibility. Please take a moment to read through some of the stories within this report and celebrate with us what we are doing together. CFS is a school with a calling, a vocation. It is to provide promising young men a college-preparatory education centered on Christian values, one that would otherwise be beyond their means. The Board of Directors, alumni, parents, faculty, and administrators have entered a strategic planning process to bring CFS ever closer to answering its call in our generation. We know as we enter the process we are operating from a sound financial position without which seizing our opportunities would be impossible. We also know those opportunities imply new challenges and obligations and increasing charitable support. The cost of educating, housing, feeding, and nurturing one boarding student at CFS exceeds $60,000. Yet, none of our families pays more than $25,000. In fact, most pay far less. This degree of subsidy is unique in the nation. But it is well worth the investment. Read the stories in this report. As was I, you will be duly impressed. Despite such success stories, however, we cannot become complacent. Our vision for the CFS of the 21st Century is a bold one that will challenge us all. Above, I used the words “vocation” and “calling.” I heard it said recently that education at CFS is not a job or a service; it is a matter of building lives. The message I have to convey to you is the most important I have ever carried. CFS, The School at Church Farm, is not classrooms or playing fields or cottages. It is people. It is the boys and their teachers and coaches. And it is you and I. The calling I speak of above thus becomes our calling. Who We Are. . . Home at Church Farm There are more than 127,000 high schools across the United States. I think more than two hundred of them are boarding schools. Of them all, my mother chose CFS for me. Was it because it was a boarding school, and she wanted me to learn how to live on my own? Was it because she wanted me to learn that the way I dress and present myself is important? I think it was all of these. She also wanted me to meet boys different from me… from different cultures, different parts of the world. She made her choice, and it was right. At CFS, I received one of the finest educations a school could provide, I learned how to prepare for college and the business world beyond. Even better, I formed connections with friends whose loyalty I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. I received a lot of attention from my teachers. I asked questions, I got answers. I saw my teachers both as mentors and friends… guides, who inside and outside of the classroom, cared about me and wanted the best for me. They gave me the precious gift of their time. They listened, and they gave me the precious gift of their wisdom.

CFS prepared me for college and business. I am responsible when it comes to my work; I know that school comes first and everything else comes second. This, putting work before leisure, I will carry with me into my professional life. Taking me out of my comfort zone and putting me in a completely new environment taught me how to adapt to new situations. Coming to CFS allowed me to be my own person and show my true character. I learned how shallow it is to try to impress people. I made friends with all types of kids. I became accepting of all types of people. I learned to listen to them and learn from them. I know I’ll need those skills throughout my future. Many adults say that college is the place where you’ll meet most of your lifelong friends. I made lifelong friends at CFS. CFS is family. I know when I come back to Church Farm School I’ll be home; and my brothers will be waiting for me. From a speech Tyrel gave to the CFS community.

Into the Light When you listen to Sarah O’Neill talk about what she does, you never hear the word “education.” It’s as if education is the dullest of subjects. She’d never say of one of her students, “I educated him.” But she says with genuine affection and pride, “I taught him.” That pride is deeply personal, but it is not ego or conceit. Rather it is the pride she feels in how her students have grown both as learners and young men. And it’s the pride of knowing that, somehow, in some way difficult to articulate, she was able to spot and guide that growth. The Class of 2010 had a reputation. They were rough-cut and proud of it. But when Sarah starts talking about them, she leans forward in her chair, her eyes light up, and she takes off. She speaks in terms of the mission. “They were my guys, and I saw the good in them. I taught them in 10th grade and in 12th. They went out of their way for me, and I went out of my way for them. Where they would have been if not for CFS I don’t know. But they were the perfect fit for this School. The Sarah O’Neill classes are small, so nobody can hide. I can pinpoint when someone is struggling. And I can see the talent, the brilliance that the boys can feel but are almost afraid of. They don’t know what to do with it. Here, I have the time and space to meet with them on their level and help them to rise to a higher one.” At the Class of 2010 commencement, someone asked one of the graduates, “Who is your favorite teacher?” “Mrs. O’Neill.” “Why?” “Man, because she made me think.” Call it what you want, teaching or education or something else. It is the shedding of light on a world, which for that student would have remained in darkness, if not for Sarah O’Neill and CFS, The School at Church Farm.

Who We Are. . . Pass It On Dr. Earl W. Robison ’60 distinguished himself as a scholar at Church Farm School. “When I was twelve, my single mother had trouble coping with an active ‘troublemaker’ in school. My aunt and grandmother knew of Church Farm through their affiliation with the Episcopal Church in Ambler. At their suggestion, we visited the school, and soon after, I was enrolled. The initial upset eventually yielded to a very satisfying experience and tools which would help me through the rest of my life.” After CFS, “Bill” matriculated at Drexel Institute of Technology (now Drexel University) where he received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1965. He earned his M.D. at Jefferson Medical College (now Thomas Jefferson University) in 1969. Going then to the University of Michigan, he completed four years of residency in Internal Medicine and two years of fellowship in Hematology/Oncology. In 1976, he entered private practice in Oncology/Internal Medicine in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was president of the Wyoming Division of the American Cancer Society for five years and aided in the formation of a hospice program in Cheyenne. He retired in 2001 after practicing medicine for 25 years.

Bill and his wife, Linda, returned to campus in June for commencement and his 50th Reunion Weekend. “At the reunion, it was impressive how our classmates interacted immediately – even after 25 or 50 years without contact. Those friendships are deep and long lasting. Our visit also reassured me that the school’s future is in good hands.” “I had always been a faithful contributor to the School until my retirement. At that point, I felt that (with no further income) my responsibility had been met. I also felt it was time for the younger grads to step up to the plate. Since our visit I’ve tempered that feeling. I’m joining those younger alums and have begun supporting CFS again. I truly believe in the mission of the School. Giving young men a chance they might not otherwise receive is as important now as it was when I got that help.” Since his retirement, Bill has been busy raising alpacas, doing woodworking in his home shop in Cheyenne, and traveling.

In the Spirit “We had moved to the Malvern area in 1979,” said Sam Cupp, and it was then that he first heard about CFS. “To us, it was just three letters that named a school. We had four children who attended public school in our district. In 1993, I was transferred to Toronto for five years.” “When we returned to the area in the spring of 1998, our youngest son, Kevin, enrolled in the public school again. It was the end of middle school for Kevin and a difficult time to transition to a new school. We decided to explore other educational options for him where he might feel more comfortable and excel. “We did our homework… visited independent schools on and around the Main Line. We wanted our search to be thorough because there was a lot at stake. CFS was on our list. “Midsummer, we called CFS. Dr. Devenney was then in charge of Admissions. We came in Samuel Cupp to talk, and it sounded good. We got a feel for the spirit of the place. Small classes, small student/teacher ratio. Kevin went in for his interview with Bob [Devenney]. When they came out, Bob said, ‘If he wants to come here, he can.’ Within weeks, Kevin knew his teachers at CFS; they knew him. They drew him out, and he thrived. He was happy at school and at home. He made friendships he still treasures, and he learned. “I remember sitting at Kevin’s graduation thinking, ‘Look at all these successful kids…. Going off to college, going off to live their lives.’ The ceremony was dignified and intimate, more like a family gathering than a spectacle. And in that chapel I understood something I had felt for four years but never articulated. It wasn’t just the teachers and the friends and Kevin’s success. It was the spirit of CFS. Christian values inform the way the teachers teach, the students learn, the coaches coach. There is nothing ‘preachy’ about this, but it is real and deep. CFS has a soul. “Kevin graduated from college in three and a half years. He works at Vanguard… a successful, happy adult. And if you ask him how it all happened, you’ll get a three-letter response. Advancing The Mission Advancing The Mission Times have changed and so has the context in which the CFS experience is offered. Suburban sprawl has reached Exton, and the increasingly interactive and expeditious means by which we have contact and communicate with a diverse global culture is here too. Any institution, let alone a school like ours, which is resistant or reluctant to change within this exciting, new situation will find itself irrelevant, marginalized and on death’s door. Throughout its history, CFS leadership has sought to advance its historic mission within changing circumstances by focusing on the essentials: helping boys of ability and promise gain an education where their economic and social circumstances might have otherwise prevented it. We will advance this great cause directly, clearly and boldly. Since late winter, a task force has been meeting to construct a strategic plan for the future. That plan will find its shape in the coming year and will be communicated to you. Importantly, the School is at work identifying its key strategic markers and objectives, those that will sustain it now and in the future. The mission is too important and critical to families and boys searching for this opportunity, and we will not abandon the founder’s vision to do something right – one boy at a time. It is a moral imperative. In an age of spiritual searching, CFS remains an embodiment of a social gospel that can enrich and inform a new generation of persons loyal to what is just and right. Your renewed, continued and, where possible, expanded generosity leads in this direction and advances the mission. God willing, we will succeed and remain a gift of hope to many.

Annual Giving Giving to CFS starts with the Annual Fund. So important to the financial health of the School, Annual Giving helps bridge the gap between operating expenses and income. Many of our most loyal donors give without being asked; we get their checks in the mail in the late weeks of summer. Some respond through the annual report, by writing out a check and returning it in the envelope attached to this brochure. Advancing The Mission

They are not alone. One hundred percent of our Board members are donors, as are many of our faculty and staff. Foundations, corporations, alumni, and parents – all give, and in giving help us help our boys. And there, right there, is what we’re all about, building lives for 200 boys, one boy at a time.

Making a CFS education affordable has been the heart of all giving for over ninety years. The CFS Endowment Fund is key to all efforts to sustain our founding mission and business model. It is designed and managed to generate sufficient revenue to support annual operations.

During the 2009-2010 fiscal year, the CFS Endowment Fund portfolio grew 14.8%, net of additions/ withdrawals/fees. We continue to be prudent stewards of the fund. Careful management of this diversified portfolio over the long term has delivered an average annualized rate of return of 8.9% during the last 15 years.

In 2009-2010 our endowment funded 68.7% of the School’s operating expenses – 7.8% less than a year ago. This represents a 4.9% draw against the fund’s 12-quarter rolling average (@ 12/31/08) as we strive to achieve and maintain an annual spending discipline of 5.0% over the long term. As the 12-quarter average continues to decline over the next year or two, so will our ability to draw the needed funds from the endowment to fund operations. The trustees and administration continue to carefully monitor expenses and consider new efficiencies and/or revenue opportunities to better support the mission of CFS. We need your gifts.

Operations The operating budget is dedicated to the CFS mission, the boys, devoted faculty and staff, the technology-based curriculum, and a 150-acre campus situated in central Chester County.

The CFS mission directs that we provide an affordable education, particularly to those for whom such an education would be otherwise unattainable. The average tuition paid was $5,600, and remains one of the lowest of any private boarding school in the country. Each and every CFS family (100%) receives a substantial cost subsidy to attend CFS. CFS families are asked to pay only a tuition rate they can afford, to a maximum rate that is well below 50% of the real cost to educate. The average gross income of our families this past fiscal year was roughly $65,000 for a family of four.

In 2009-2010, tuition fees funded 10.1% of CFS’ operating expenses. The balance of expenses was funded through endowment (68.7%) and fund raising (21.2%).

The Year in Review Graduation 2010 On June 5, 2010, the 28 young men of the CFS Class of 2010 were awarded their high school diplomas and school Bibles from Head of School Rev. Edmund K. Sherrill II and Chairman of the Board Samuel H. Ballam III. Donned in their maroon caps and gowns, the young men also received the traditional blessing during the emotion-filled ceremony in the Chapel of the Atonement. Members of the graduating class are now continuing their education at many fine colleges and universities: University of Pennsylvania, Syracuse, American, Catholic, Art Center College of Design and Elon University, just to name a few. Several graduates are also attending the University of Maryland at College Park. Our newest alumni are pursuing degrees in engineering, pre-law, business administration, communications, animal science, transportation design, and sports management, among many other majors.

The CFS tradition of service to country continues with the Class of 2010, as well. Keita Rodgers ’10, son of CFS Director of Academics Ken Rodgers, Sr. will complete a post-grad year at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School, preparing to enter the United States Military Academy at West Point. Best Wishes The entire CFS community extends best wishes to Bill Sanderson who retired in June 2010 after 37 years of service to CFS. Bill will always be remembered as a dedicated math instructor, coach, mentor and friend to many. Bill and his wife Jenny, long-time Church Farm School art department chair, returned back to their beloved home town of Kalamazoo, Mich. where they plan to enjoy the next phase of their lives together. In addition, best wishes are extended to our dedicated and long-time employees who also chose early retirement after 25 or more years of service to CFS. All of the retirees were honored at a dinner and reception at the Sherrill’s at the close of the school year. They include Elaine Barndt, Virginia Crozier, Clarence Vance and John Wade. Janet Hartzell was also honored posthumously. All members of the CFS community are grateful to these dedicated individuals for their loyal service.

The Year in Review Admissions Update One of the most frequently asked questions of us in the admissions office is, “What are you looking for in a boy?” To answer, we need go no further than the CFS mission, the Colonel’s poignant founding vision, which nobly directs us to serve boys of ability and promise – two essential admissions criteria that are as applicable in 2010 as they were in 1918. “Ability” is all that a boy has accomplished before coming to Church Farm, as demonstrated in the classroom and in a wide variety of other pursuits. Many CFS applicants have been outstanding performers in their past school – academically, artistically, athletically, and in extra-curricular activities.

“Promise” is all that a boy has yet to achieve. It is the vision of what he might become through the guidance, structure and opportunities available at Church Farm. We accept boys, who, because of circumstance or environment, have not yet found that perfect formula for classroom success, but who have the uncommon desire to improve. These are students who may work harder for a B than those who coast for an A. Students whom teachers describe as motivated and determined. Students who may not always have the right answer, but who always do the right thing. Other-centered boys who break the mold of the self-absorbed teenager by giving back to their families, friends, and communities. Boys whose “I will” is more important than their IQs. Strictly by the numbers, the 2009-2010 admissions cycle was successful. Interest in CFS rose by 20%. New student enrollment grew 40%, and the school’s total student body reached a five year high. And yet just as test scores and G.P.A. are not the full measure of a boy, these statistics are not the full measure of our admissions effort. Instead, we evaluate this past year along the same lines as we do our applicants: ability and promise. There is certainly no shortage of either in our wonderful group of new students. Our 62 new students hail from eight states and five countries. They are passionate mathematicians, scientists, historians, and writers. They sing in choir and play saxophones, clarinets, oboes, and the steel pan. They draw comics, create anime, design costumes, and paint. They love basketball, track, wrestling, baseball, and golf. They teach Sunday school, edit the yearbook, write poetry, tutor classmates, and play chess. They are proud representatives of their unique cultural heritages, be they Guyanese, Nigerian, German, Syrian, Indian, Panamanian, Honduran, or Czech, and are part of our wonderfully diverse community. And yet their ability, though significant, is dwarfed by their magnificent promise. The mission of CFS, The School at Church Farm directs us to serve students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to receive a college-preparatory education. Thanks to the blessings of the school’s endowment and its wonderful family of donors, we are able to continue to fulfill this mission; our 62 new students are the recipients of financial subsidies that, on average, cover 85% of the $60,000 cost of housing, feeding, teaching, and nurturing a student at CFS. Indeed, what we find most impressive about the new students are the challenges that many have overcome simply to have the chance to use that ability, to reach that promise. Young men like a seventh grader from Philadelphia, whose ailing grandmother and primary caregiver made his enrollment at CFS her final act; he is determined to honor her legacy through his efforts. A freshman from Nigeria, who despite being orphaned at a young age, made the 5,300 mile journey to Exton on his own. A day student from West Chester, once lost in the huge public school system, who is reconnecting with his sense of self – and his academic pride – in the CFS community. And a junior, whose years of hard work at a school for students with learning differences has prepared him to succeed at CFS and gain confidence that he will attend a fine university. For these boys, and all our boys of promise, awaits a CFS experience of ripe opportunity, and a future of limitless possibility.

At A Glance Campus & Residential Life Safe, secure, 150-acre campus in the rolling hills of Chester County about 30 miles west of Philadelphia and just two hours from New York and Washington, D.C. About 90% of our students live on campus in one of 10 white stucco dorms or “cottages.” Adult faculty members live with students in each cottage, serving as advisors, counselors, mentors, and role models.

An extraordinarily diverse student body of approximately 200 students from many different racial and ethnic backgrounds and from across the socioeconomic spectrum. CFS students trace their origins back to 27 different countries.

Faculty 51 dedicated faculty members who understand boys, want to work with boys, and know how to help boys thrive during a time of life marked by intense growth and change. The average CFS class has between 7 and 12 students. The student–teacher ratio is 7:1.

Curriculum Challenging college-preparatory curriculum with a foundation in the liberal arts. Subject areas include English language and literature, mathematics, history and social studies, science, foreign language, and visual and performing arts, with AP and honors options. The curriculum is technologically enriched – each student receives his own MacBook laptop computer.

At A Glance Community Service & Work Program Active, engaged citizenship is a priority at CFS. All students are involved in community service, devoting some 3,000 volunteer hours each year to an array of worthwhile causes. Our students also participate in a work program during free periods or on weekends. These duties include grounds and maintenance, tutoring, office work and kitchen help.

Athletics & Clubs

“We like the small class size, the intimate nature of the campus, the diversity of students. The value for the money is extraordinary. The teachers have a passion for their subjects. The students gain the skills to succeed.”

Competition in 10 sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field, indoor track and wrestling. CFS competes in the PIAA, and has a sports philosophy that stresses competitive success, participation by all, and good sportsmanship. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in 15 different school sponsored clubs.

Special Gifts The Adele Seymour Challenge Adele T. Seymour, loyal supporter of CFS, mother of Bill Seymour ’78 and grandmother of Jamie Seymour ’92, was remembered fondly by many friends after her passing in October 2009. Gifts in her memory were directed to the School, and a particularly generous donor offered to match the first $20,000 in Annual Fund donations made in her honor. The challenge was fulfilled, and through the kindness of friends additional scholarship assistance was provided to determined and deserving young men, for whom a private, boarding school education might otherwise have been out of reach.

Special Gifts The Angel Fund The Janet C. Hartzell “Angel Fund” was created in memory of long-time employee and devoted servant, Janet Hartzell. The School and Janet’s children (CFS Director of Alumni Relations Lori McDermott, Ginny McCann and Diane Hartzell) established this fund in her honor with an initial investment of what Janet would have received in added incentive had she been able to take advantage of a retirement package being offered by the School.
