WWW.do No - this isn’t our new web address ...but it could be. It stands for: “What Would Winston do?” Given all the issues that have re s u l t e d i n a ‘ S u m m e r o f Discontent” one does search (in vain?) for a leader to emerge. I must confess to spending time surfing the net, the archetypal ‘silver surfer’, and one interesting site is CNN.com. Their Senior Political Analyst, David Gergen, has apparently been on holiday in the UK, and
In accordance with agreement at the AGM, annual subscriptions to the Branch are due by the end of this month. Please see page 3 for information regarding payment and subscription levels. Don’t forget..........
having visited the Churchill War Rooms has written a great article which I suggest you may want to read. chartwelltccuk@virginmedia.com

AND WHAT DID YOU DO? Did you enjoy the British Summer?....what a day that was! Hope you all had a good break and are now looking forward to the joyous annual event of great eating and drinking as we approach that time of year of goodwill to all men (and women)....I mean of course our Churchill celebratory birthday lunch on 30th November. Plans are well in hand and more of that in the next issue. In the absence of anyone else’s summer campaign, let me tell you about mine. Fo l l o w i n g a l a n d m a r k birthday this year my wife surprised me with the patter of tiny feet again in our household, and presented me with Harriet (Picture opposite). Given that we have 4 Labradors already she felt a fifth would be no problem! In all fairness as we have her brother and sister from earlier matings, the good and biddable nature of their breeding makes her a pleasure. The importance of breeding cannot be emphasised enough, which leads ones mind back to our recent troubles! I am pleased to say that already she is displaying all the characteristics of her brother and sister which makes them excellent gun-dogs. However as I am going to to do the training and handling, things may still go wrong!
As you have probably gathered with 5 Labradors, holidays away from home are but a distant memory but it does give me time to catch up on my reading. Unfortunately I am very much a ‘biblioholic’ and my library is now full with books piled on the floor....not good. So I decided to purchase a Kindle, not without some misgivings, but I have to report what a great gadget. At the same time I treated myself to some downloads of the inevitable ‘Churchill’ books, two fairly new and one old. The two new ones were: ‘Churchill’s Dilemma’ Graham T. Clews, which puts an interesting slant on the Dardanelles Campaign, and ‘T he Churchill's’ - Mary Lovell, which looks at the early family. In addition there are a great number of ‘free’ books which are now outside copyright, I put free in inverted commas as of course you have to buy the reader. I was really impressed by the speed with which these books were downloaded, and although I still prefer to hold a book, reading in bed is much easier with just a push of the button to turn the pages, and when I fall asleep and drop the thing it always remembers what page I was reading... can’t say fairer than that!

SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW DUE and programme of events It doesn’t seem a year since we started our Branch, and this seems like a good time to thank everyone who has contributed to the success, which I believe it has been, by attending our meetings whenever they have been able. Our second year has a good foundation upon which to build and I do hope that you will all wish to re-join for the next stage in our development. We will be starting a campaign amongst local schools and colleges this September to encourage a new generation to learn more about Sir Winston and his place in our nations history. For this to succeed we need our Branch to continue to flourish. We have some dates for your diary for the coming year: 30th November 2011- WSC celebratory birthday lunch - Grasshopper on The Green. 23rd February 2012- Allen Packwood, Executive Director, The Churchill Centre UK, & Director Churchill Archives Centre Venue: The Mulberry Suite, Chartwell 25th April 2012- AGM and ‘KBO’ quiz -Grasshopper on The Green (Full details of all the above to follow) Having regard to the discussion at the AGM the committee have taken note of all the points raised and although it was agreed that the subscription level should be £10 per annum we also considered our current cash position. We were mindful of the commitment given that we would not build a cache of funds greater than our immediate requirements and therefore we feel that we can subsidise the subscription for this year and peg the subscription at £7 for individual members. We hope you will be happy with this arrangement. Please send your cheques payable to ‘Chartwell Branch TCC’ for this amount to: Mike Long, Flat2, Springwood Court 6 Birdhurst Road, South Croydon CR2 7EA Please also consider completing a standing order for future years and also a gift aid form so that we can recover funds from HMRC. Appropriate forms available upon request. If you have any queries please get in touch. chartwelltccuk@virginmedia.com
