“Winston Churchill-Soldier”
Considering he has been, and will remain to be, one of the most studied personalities of the 20th century, relatively little has been written about the military service and war experiences of Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill: Soldier rounds out, and gives detail and perspective to, Churchill’s early writings as a serving officer who was also a popular war correspondent. It also gives a full understanding of how Churchill’s military service molded his character and how it served him in his political career. Douglas S. Russell was educated at Grinnell College and the University of Iowa College of Law. He serves as a Judge of the Iowa District Court and lives in Iowa City, Iowa. His research and writing have focused on Churchill’s early life and military career. He served in the US Army, Military Intelligence. Russell is the author of The Orders, Decorations and Medals of Sir Winston Churchill, published by the Churchill Centre in 1990, and Winston Churchill: Soldier, The Military Life of a Gentleman at War, published by Brassey’s in 2005.
“Churchill and Roosevelt: The Great Spat”
In the spring of 1942, as the Japanese fleet entered the Indian Ocean, sank half the Royal Navy and began bombing Ceylon, Madras and Calcutta, Churchill panicked—asking the United States to save the British Empire. How President Roosevelt responded—how Churchill threatened to resign as Prime Minister— is one of the great, uncharted stories of WWII. Nigel Hamilton is President of the Biographers International Organization, and Senior Fellow, McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies at University of Massachusetts-Boston. He is the author of The New York Times bestselling JFK: Reckless Youth; Monty, the award-winning, three-volume authorized biography on Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery; American Caesars: Lives of the Presidents, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush; and the forthcoming FDR at War, to be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2013.
“Churchill Defiant”
At the end of July 1945, Winston Churchill was a defeated man—hurled from power by the British people at the end of the war in which he had just saved his country. Churchill Defiant: Fighting On, 1945-1955 is the story of how, when it seemed impossible, Churchill fought his way back over the next six years to the center of great events—the only place he wanted to be. Barbara Leaming is the author of two New York Times bestselling biographies and three New York Times Notable Books of the Year. Her articles have appeared in many publications in the United States and Europe, including the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and The Times of London.
“Churchill Style”
As a cigar smoker, champagne drinker, home-owner, painter, and even as a dresser, Winston Churchill had extravagant personal style. Churchill Style: The Art of Being Winston Churchill shares the private world that Churchill created for himself away from politics. Barry Singer is the founder and longtime proprietor of Chartwell Booksellers in New York City. Over the course of a distinguished 25-year career, he has written extensively about the arts for The New York Times Arts & Leisure section, The New Yorker, New York Magazine and The New York Times Magazine, among many other publications. Singer is the author of Black and Blue: The Life and Lyrics of Andy Razaf; Alive at the Village Vanguard; and Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theater and Beyond.

JOIN US FOR THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WWII DECEMBER 6–8, 2012
This informative conference will be the second in our 70th Anniversary of WWII commemorative series. Listen to top historians in the field discuss the first phases of the war in Europe, from the German Blitzkrieg, to the Steppe of the Eastern Front and the deserts of North Africa. Learn how the US Home Front was able to mobilize to supply not just the US Armed Forces but the Allies through Lend-Lease, and how this materiel was shipped across the wide Atlantic Ocean with the constant U-Boat threat. The Conference will cover the war in Europe, the Eastern Front, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean up to May 1943, with the surrender of the Afrika Korps. The surrender of Rommel’s Afrika Korps was preceded by the invasion of North Africa, which Churchill marked as “The End of the Beginning.” We hope you come to learn about how the Allies came together in the daunting task of Stemming the Nazi Tide. For more information or to make a reservation, visit our website, www.ww2conference.com or call 1-877-813-3329 x 511.
