The Church and School of Saint Mary community supported Ellie Rocco at the St. Jude Walk/Run to end childhood cancer.
Guardians for Ellie supports the Rocco Family Guardians for Ellie raised over $25,000 in support of St. Jude Children’s Medical Center and their treatment of parishioner Ellie Rocco. Ellie Rocco is the most excited Eighth Grader in the School of Saint Mary. After her leukemia diagnosis, Ellie spent much of her seventh grade year getting treatment at St. Jude. Ellie returned to the School of Saint Mary this fall. Ellie said she enjoys “being back in the school and seeing my friends. Last
year, I had the worst part of school - the work - and none of the social activities.” In gratitude for the treatment she received, Ellie and her family invited the Saint Mary community to help them support St. Jude in the 2017 & 2018 Walk/Run to end childhood cancer. Mike Rocco said of the 2017 run, “We didn't know the St. Jude Walk/Run existed in this town. While we were in Memphis getting treatment, some teachers
started it up on their own and rallied everyone behind it. It was incredible. Last year, we had about 200 people from church and school there supporting us. As a team, Guardians for Ellie raised over $15,000 for Saint Jude. It blew us away. It showed us the type of community we are fortunate to be part of.” Teachers Alicia Wagner and Alan Bryan led the Guardians for Ellie team in 2018. They took over for (Continued on page 6)

This will be the second time that Bishop Konderla has come to the Church of Saint Mary on a MaryFair weekend. He said Mass and attended the Picnic in 2016, the year that rain drove the festivities inside. Bishop Konderla wished to support our Dinner & Auction by hand crafting a one-of-akind wooden bowl for the MaryFair Live Auction. This bowl is a priceless keepsake specially made for MaryFair.
Bishop Konderla creates bowls from a single piece of wood.
In recent years, MaryFair has funded the School’s classroom solar shades increasing security and lowering power consumption. MaryFair funded the Church’s hearing loop giving excellent sound to parishioners who use hearing aids.
MaryFair supports our School
This year’s designated appeal aims to replace the School’s existing lighting with energy efficient LED panels.
MaryFair provides funds to the School of Saint Mary and to the Church of Saint Mary.

Father Vince Fernandez is looking forward to completing his advanced degree in Spiritual Theology.
Ellen Doyle
Father Vince Fernandez, Saint Mary Guardian Father Vince Fernandez was never a Church of Saint Mary parishioner, however he spent many hours on this campus studying at the School of Saint Mary.
Yeah, the goal with Spiritual Theology was for me to become a spiritual director in the diocese, a great need for the Diocese of Tulsa. I hope when I get back I will have some spiritual directees to guide along their faith lives.
Many of the teachers at the School of Saint Mary remember young Vince when he was a student.
Do you see some of your directees being priest and deacons, or kids at Bishop Kelley, or adults in parishes?
When were you ordained a priest? I was ordained June 30, 2018 and my temporary assignment is at Holy Family Cathedral.
Yadi Boykin
Father Vince completed a temporary assignment at the Cathedral and is finishing his advanced degree in Rome.
What is next for you after this assignment? At the end of September, I go back to Rome to finish my License in Spiritual Theology from the Angelicum (Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas).
We’ll see who comes to me. My degree gives me a lot of insights into the spiritual life and prayer. I’ll be able to help whoever needs spiritual direction. You graduated from the School of Saint Mary. Do you have any great memories from your time here? I remember I took an advanced English class
Does that give you any insight as to your future assignments?

with Mrs. Thalken. It was really, really hard. I think it was a combined seventh and eighth grade class. She really pushed us. When I went to Bishop Kelley, the intro freshmen classes were very easy compared to Mrs. Thalken’s class. I think all my classmates would agree that she prepared us in terms of English. We were ahead of the curve in terms of writing papers. I appreciated her. Even now, it helps me with my homilies.
2017 team leader Sarah Edwards who became an overall event coordinator this year.
Were there any moments in the school that helped plant seeds of a priestly vocation? Yes, I remember being encouraged a lot by the faculty and priests there - Monsignor Dorney, Father Jack, and Father Joe Townsend. I remember the religion classes being very helpful in learning about my faith. I remember tackling some of the more difficult issues in our faith and exploring those things.
Fall 2018
Hundreds of parishioners supported Guardians for Ellie through donations and participation in the Walk/Run. Our team was the largest at this year’s event. Leader Alicia Wagner said, “I was so happy to see everyone come out to support this cause and to support Ellie.” Alan Bryan noted, “My favorite part of the event is the opening ceremony when we met each patient’s family. I was impressed that a woman who was treated twenty years ago had come back to give thanks.” Event coordinator Sarah Edwards was determined to take our team to new levels this year. She organized a Kiss The Pig contest where donors voted for a teacher or priest to kiss one of teacher ZaQue Hutchings’ pet pigs. The Kiss The Pig contest added over $1,000 to the Guardians for Ellie total. Sarah Edwards won the contest and kissed the pig. Father Duy and Alan Bryan also kissed the pig.

Ellie’s mother Shawna expressed her gratitude to the parish community, “We couldn’t have got through the past year without you.” The Rocco family is happy to be able to spend more time in Tulsa. Shawna said, “We're so grateful that Tulsa's Saint Francis Hospital is now an affiliate of Saint Jude. They have their own clinic. Everything we need to do for Ellie is based at Saint Jude through Saint Francis. We can't be more grateful for that.”

BK Hall of Fame 1985-2017
BK inducts Ellen Doyle into Hall of Fame BKHS selected Church of Saint Mary parishioner Ellen Doyle to be inducted into its Hall of Fame. How did you learn about your entry into the Hall of Fame?
What is it about the mission of Bishop Kelley that made you want to invest your time?
It was quite a surprise to me. Father Kastl asked me to come to his office and I just thought it would be for a little chit-chat since I've known him through the Church of Saint Mary and I wanted to congratulate him on his new role.
The mission of the school is to certainly enhance and to provide Catholic education. The longer I was there, the more I grew to love the charism of Saint John Baptiste de la Salle. I really did feel that when I started at Kelley, I heard about the LaSallian Christian Brothers.
He broke the news that I had been selected to become part of the Hall of Fame. So I immediately broke down into tears but I felt very honored and humbled by this award. I don't know what kind of criteria they used maybe I'm the bottom of the barrel. I'm so honored to be inducted with Judith McMasters, who has been at Kelley for longer than I have been, and with Nita & Tony Lutman. Tony was our I.T. guy when I first got there. If ever I had an issue, Tony would come and say, "Doyle! Don't worry about it. We'll get it fixed." God bless them because their involvement has stayed in support of the Academic Bowl.
The more I got to know about that, I thought, "This is really communal in so many aspects." You create in your classroom a community of love and care, and service to one another. Certainly, my job as a theology teacher is to inform them as to their faith, walk with them as an accompaniment model rather than - okay - here are things you've gotta learn. I found from my personality, being an older sister of seven younger siblings, caring for and walking with and getting to know my students in that regard is a learning experience for me everyday.
