Church of Saint Mary continues to grow

IN THE PAST TWELVE MONTHS

Parishioners fill the pews at the Church of Saint Mary and are ready to make room for newcomers. With forty -five Baptisms and a gain of over two hundred forty new parishioners in the past year, the Church of Saint Mary is a healthy parish. How do parishioners commit and re -commit themselves? How do they find new ways to grow in their faith? At the beginning of this month, Church of Saint Mary parishioners renewed their commitment to the parish—and more importantly—to God as part of the annual Stewardship Renewal.

Outreach uses huge buying power. When the parish Outreach Ministry spends one dollar, it gets up to $14 in groceries. One dollar turns into fourteen at the Tulsa Community Food Bank. That helps Outreach provide more than 3,000 pounds of food every month to clients.

Parishioners share preferences in Service Survey Church of Saint Mary parishioners want to serve others. “We want to serve,” is a perennial message from people in the pews to parish leadership. Ministry leaders from several groups - especially those who offer the Day of Service series and the Outreach Ministry - want to know how the church is doing. Is the Church of Saint Mary meeting the hopes and expectations of its parishioners? This is a summary of the results of a November survey.

Does the Church of Saint Mary offer enough service opportunities to parishioners?

Community Food Bank, Home Improvement Ministry, Night Light Tulsa. What times are best for you to participate?

Parishioners can donate food, but it’s more helpful to donate toiletries. Outreach gets no discount on toiletries.

84% of those who completed the survey agree that the parish offers enough opportunities. What types of service opportunities should the parish offer?

Ours is the only Outreach Center in the area that provides these essential products. Food stamps don’t cover the cost of these items. Thanks to your generosity, we do! Please take a bag from vestibule in the church, fill it, and return it knowing that you’re living the Corporal Works of Mercy.

Over half of the respondents said Saturday mornings are best. Nearly half said Sunday afternoons are good. 38% of parishioners said the parish is offering enough kid-friendly projects. 32% wish the parish would offer more projects appropriate for children. 62% of respondents say that child care is important in attracting people to work service projects. The complete results from this survey are available at churchofsaintmary.com/survey.

Ways to Volunteer with Outreach Ministry

Outreach Ministry expands, offers service opportunities to entire parish The Outreach Ministry at the Church of Saint Mary has a motto: Every person has a story and every story exposes the glory of God. The Outreach Ministry recently opened its doors to any volunteers from the parish. A small group of early volunteers reflected on what made them start. Patti: I think it was through the church bulletin that I actually saw it first and then I know Jackie from an ACTS retreat. She sent out an email to a bunch of people asking for volunteers. I was moved because of that. Ken: Oh, that was way back when Sister Gabriel was here: Peace and Justice Turkey Bingo. It would be a long story. Sharon: I wasn't shy about calling her I called her up and I told her I wanted to do some volunteer work and would an old woman be okay. She said “Sure. Come on down.” Gail: So I wanted to get started right away. I wanted to do a lot of different things around the parish and that's what we're called to do. Believe me: if I didn't feel that I was called to do it I probably would be doing something else but I feel that this is something God wants me to do right now. Patti: I feel like the Holy Spirit calls me to be charitable and loving to people so I think I probably do it because of that Ken: I visit with the guests when I have time. I pack the food that they need and the toiletries they need. I just ask God to bless them as they find their way out. And surprisingly many of them returned that blessing.

Patti: I get to fill grocery bags for people. Sometimes I get to talk to them sometimes people will want to talk to me and sometimes they'll ask me to pray with them. I get blessed a thousand times. Every time someone leaves or comes, they tell me “God bless [me],” so I just receive a lot of blessings and give out a lot of food. Sharon: [I enjoy] just helping them and getting to know some of your fellow parishioners that you go to church with. What do you get out of volunteering at the Outreach Center?

Our Outreach Center is looking for “Marthas” and “Stewards” to minister to the needs of our clients. Volunteer spots: Monday-Friday 9:30am12:00pm & 1:00pm-4:30pm.

Please prayerfully consider spending your time with our clients who are in desperate need of companionship, food, drink, dignity, and laughter.

Patti: The Holy Spirit blesses me in so much in everything that I do. It pours out in every aspect my life so certainly I get to meet people. I get to meet their needs which is always wonderful. You always are more blessed when you give than when you receive, so I think it's probably the blessings I get. Sharon: To be perfectly honest, it fills a need in my soul. It fills my heart to help somebody. Gail: Everybody gets a good feeling when they're helping someone else. I think people who are in in a slump or possibly are depressed in some way, I think they can get out of it more easily if they look to help other people who also need help, when they see that everybody's suffering. We never know what kind of cross everyone has to carry. It just helps them if they're helping somebody else lighten their load. Ken: it's part of a growth from Cursillo, ACTS, the Knights of Columbus. It's a change in in who I am and who I want to be.

Responsibilities include:  Welcome Clients  Provide Refreshments  Stock Pantry  Perform Office Related Tasks  Bag Groceries Come help us meet our clients where they are, and build an impactful relationship.

Why Stewardship?

Pilgrimage: Holy Ground: Saturday, June 8, 2019

Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God's gifts and shares these gifts in love of God and neighbor.

Winter 2018

The challenge for a parish as large as ours is finding ways for parishioners to connect with each other and with parish ministries. The parish Stewardship Council created the Annual Renewal to give parishioners a way to be deliberate about their faith. Add me. Remove me. Recommit me. On the first weekend of December, many parishioners completed their Renewal Cards. Extras are available at the Information Desk in the vestibule. Those who complete their Renewal Cards indicated their desire to recommit to a ministry. Others said they would like to get information about joining a ministry. Others indicated they would like to leave a ministry. Each parish ministry will get an update about new members and members who are leaving.
