The dining experience represents a major, regular social interaction amongst residents and is often a regular topic of conversation between meals. In addition, the quality of food is key in attracting new residents, preparing food that is ‘home like’, helps ensure residents see the facility as a home, rather than an institution so it is important to serve food that mirrors what one would cook for themselves, were they still living at home or with family. Introducing CR Foodservice Ambassador Dr Karen Abbey for the Excellence in Foodservice Community Program It is with great pleasure that I am joining forces with Church Resources to become their Foodservice Ambassador and help foodservice across the nation to enable them to achieve high standards of care, quality within foodservices and inform innovative practice. My foodservice background includes undertaking all foodservice operations across acute, community, education and aged care. Researching foodservice systems and training both here and overseas. Menu planning is the foundation of all foodservices and one of the main focusses of the PhD which I undertook with the University of Queensland. Without a well designed and thought out menu which is in line with production and meal delivery often can lead to LQHI¿FLHQFLHV ZKLFK GR DIIHFW WKH bottom line.

Menus are a key communication source not only dictating production schedules but inform consumers what is being served so that they can enjoy their meals. Procurement plays a crucial role in the development of menus. It is important to ¿QG IRRG SURGXFWV ZKLFK HQDEOH HDVH WR menu planning, but also procurement solutions which save time. Often procurement can take up time to organise and the CR solution is a valuable service in supporting foodservices in this area. Together with our supply partners CR is working hard to ensure that foodservices has access to the latest and practical information. This is what the Excellence in Foodservice Community Program is all about and I would encourage everyone to sign up for the blog, join Facebook and twitter so you don’t miss out. I look forward to sending out more updates and assisting foodservices across Australia. Dr Karen Abbey
